In Chinese, there are two ways to say “we” with subtle difference. 我们 does not include “you” as the listener. (Exclusive) 咱们 includes “you” as the listener. (Inclusive)

Demystify “Face” in China

In Chinese, face ⾯面 (miàn) metaphorically means personal esteem, prestige, honour and reputation. Two other common words of face:

脸 (liǎn) - more formal

颜 yán - more poetic There are many expressions including face:

Save face: it comes in few forms:

保⾯面⼦子 (bǎo miànzi), this literally means “keep face” i.e. avoid being disgraced. When successful, it's called 保住⾯面⼦子 (bǎozhù miànzi).

要⾯面⼦子 (yào miànzi), literally means “want face” i.e. eager to gain reputation.

爱⾯面⼦子 (ài miànzi), literally means “love face” i.e. eager to protect reputation.

Lose face: 丟⾯面⼦子 (diū miànzi), 失⾯面⼦子 (shī miànzi), 丟臉 (diū liǎn) or 丟颜 (diū yán), i.e. lose prestige

Grant face: 留留⾯面⼦子 (liú miànzi), i.e. give someone a chance to regain lost honour

Fight for face: 爭⾯面⼦子 (zhēng miànzi), i.e. fight for the honour

Give face: 給⾯面⼦子 (gěi miànzi), i.e. show respect for someone's feelings. Tactics of building up your “guanxi”, i.e. social connections 关系 (guānxì)

Don’t want face: 不不要臉 (bùyào liǎn) i.e. shameless and selfishly inconsiderate

What is it? HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) or the Chinese Proficiency Test is an international standardized exam which tests and rates Chinese language proficiency. It assesses non-native Chinese speakers' abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily, academic and professional lives. The HSK test approximates the English TOEFL.

What does the test consist? The test consists of a writing test and a speaking test, which are independent of each other. There are 6 levels of writing tests and 3 levels of speaking tests. Writing tests cover listening and reading comprehension, with writing from Level 3 onwards. Speaking tests cover listening and repeating, reading aloud and answering questions. During the test, test takers' speeches will be recorded.

What is it for? An HSK certificate is valid without any limitation in China. The test aims to be a certificate of language proficiency for higher educational and professional purposes. For example, a job description might ask for foreign applicants with "HSK5 or better."
