    AT A GLANCE

Natural blessings and acomfortable pace make Southern

Idaho the perfect refuge fromthe challenges of largermetropolitan areas.

    DEEP ROOTS IN AGRICULTURE

As evidenced by its jaw-droppingscenery, Southern Idaho is a favoredchild of Mother Nature. Yet, shehad some help when it cameto capitalizing on the regionsabundant agricultural commodities.

    Southern Idaho began as

an agricultural center when in1893, entrepreneur I.B. Perrineconvinced private financiers tobuild a dam on the Snake Riveralong with a corresponding canalsystem to irrigate the area. Thiswork culminated in the 1900founding of the Twin Falls Landand Water Co. and the subsequentcompletion of Milner Dam in1905. The City of Twin Falls servedthose pioneering farmers who

homesteaded the irrigated landsof the fertile Snake River Plain.

    PERFECT BLEND OF AMENITIES

The same vision, ambition, imagination and hard work of thosepioneers lives on in the regionsbusiness community from thelarge food-processing companyto the small mom-and-pop shop.As a result, Southern Idaho hasgrown into one of the worlds most

productive farming regions anarea that comprises several ruraltowns along with the small urbancenter of Twin Falls.

Positive and progressive thinking, insightful community planning andwelcoming, friendly people haveencouraged healthy growth whilepreparing wisely for additionalexpansion. Meanwhile, residentsenjoy world-class outdoor recreationin one of the most beautiful and

diverse landscapes in the country. It all adds up to a perfect balancefor living, working and playing.

The whole family can come here, and everybodyhas something they can do, Miller says. SouthernIdaho is a really family-friendly area.

Soldier Mountain Ski Area near Fairfield is a primeexample of a facility that is welcoming to families.Actor Bruce Willis owned Soldier Mountain fornearly 20 years before donating it to a local nonprofit

organization in 2012. It caters to the serious skier,as well as beginners as young as age 2.

Were a family resort and a teaching resort, saysKristi Schiermeier, who manages Soldier Mountainwith her husband, Don. We have a lot of variety andareas of expertise in a small area. Its a place whereyou can take your whole family and everybody getssomething out of it.

    FOR BEGINNERS

Winter recreation can sometimes be intimidatingto people who are inexperienced in such sports. That

is why places such as Pomerelle Mountain Resort inAlbion offer daily ski and snowboard lessons carefullyorganized by age and ability.

Our ski school does a fantastic job of gettingpeople going, says Woody Anderson, who co-ownsPomerelle with his wife, Sandy. We turn out a lot offirst-time skiers and snowboarders. We have idealterrain for people to learn on. It goes from veryshallow slopes to very steep slopes.

Perhaps the easiest winter activity for the novice istubing, where you simply sit back and let gravity do allthe work. Magic Mountain offers a full-service tubing

    lift with multiple downhill lanes.

Thats really great family fun for parties andholiday get-togethers, Miller says. Its especially funfor people who dont ski or snowboard. It gives thegrandparents and the younger kids something to do.

    FOR EXPERTS

Of course, experienced skiers seek more

of a challenge, and that type of winter activitycan certainly be found in Southern Idaho, too.

Soldier Mountain has approximately 1,800 acresdevoted specifically to back-country downhill skiing. The skiers are transported by a truck-sized snowcatinstead of a traditional ski lift to departure pointsnearly 10,000 feet in elevation.

Soldier Mountain has added a new 12-personsnowcat that includes a 47-inch television screen. Skierscan record their runs with small cameras attached totheir helmets, and then insert the recording chip intothe TV and watch the runs while being transportedback up the hill.

Thats for the big powder skiers who love to gohard all day, Schiermeier says.

In the end, winter in Southern Idaho is all aboutoutdoor fun with family and friends, regardless ofyour level of expertise.

When snow hits the mountain, that doesnt slowanybody down around here, Schiermeier says. Welove to play, and we love to take our families. Its aneverybody-knows-your-name kind of deal. Onceyoure a friend here, youre always a friend.

    by Cary Estes

Hit the SlopesPomerelle Mountain Resorthas 24 slopes, two terrainparks and a vertical drop of 1,000 feet. The resort, located

in the Sawtooth National Forest, offers group and privateski and snowboard lessons daily.

FARMERS MARKETSFresh produce and delicious artisan goods abound at

Southern Idahos farmers markets, which are spread across

the region. The Lincoln County Farmers Market in Shoshone

welcomes visitors to the county courthouse lawn each summer

through mid-October, and the market at Crossroads Point in

Jerome hosts live music and fun events. Stop by the Twin Falls

Farmers Market for everything from hand-sewn aprons to

specialty items for your dog, and of course, farm-fresh food

from local producers. This particular market operates on

the Breckenridge Endowment Farm, which is located across

from the College of Southern Idahos Expo Center. John

and Miriam Breckenridge gifted 40 acres of land to the

agriculture department at the College of Southern Idaho

so students could have hands-on experiences with production

farming, Jim Wilson says. Alfalfa, oil seed and turf are

currently growing on the farm, and it also offers U-pick

opportunities for fresh produce like raspberries and

vegetables. Visit in the fall to get lost in the annual corn maze.

HUNTINGFall transforms Southern Idaho into a truly magical place,

and hunters from all over flock to the region for huntingseason. Avid bowhunter Jeri Ahrens says the pursuit of game

is only a small reason she enjoys the activity. There is a

silence, a tranquility unlike anything one could ever

experience, she says. Even though time slows down, the

wilderness is alive. Visitors can experience that same thrill,

getting an up-close and personal look at wildlife. The

proximity to the game is one of my favorite things about the

sport, Ahrens says. I have walked over a ridge to the sight of

five majestic bull elk, followed a bull moose down a mountain

trail, watched meandering coyotes and bounding bears.

At the end of the day, whether the hunt was successful or not,

I cannot help but say, Hey God, great job on Idaho.

SNOWSHOEINGAs one of the fastest-growing winter sports, snowshoe

lovers make Southern Idaho an annual stop in the winter

season. Craters of the Moon National Monument and

Preserve and City of Rocks National Reserve, as well as a

number of other state parks, are perfect for experienced

snowshoeing visitors or those trying it out for the first time.

At Craters of the Moon, visitors can follow the orange snow

poles to explore a 1.5-mile snowshoe loop trail through the

monument. There are also snowshoe walks scheduled in

January and February with no previous experience required. For information on snowshoeing, visit www.nps.gov/crmo.

FISHINGTheres no lack of fishing opportunities in Southern

Idaho, thanks to amazing spots like the Snake River, Lake

Walcott, Salmon Falls Creek and Dog Creek Reservoir.

Dennis Brauer, an active fisherman in the area, says the

fishing in Southern Idaho is hard to beat. My preference is

fly fishing, he says. Theres just something about seeing a

toward Japanese Americans, President Franklin D.

    Roosevelt signed an

    executive order for the

    internment of these

    citizens to isolated

    centers, one of which

    was Minidoka. Visit

    the park to relive

    history and experience

    the interpretive trail

    that leads visitors

    through the site. Read

    signs about the

    internment at the

    stone guard house

    and waiting room,

    then visit the

    commemorative

    plaques for those who

died serving in the military during World War II. Minidoka

National Historic Site was established in 2001 as an

American site of conscience to explore the causes and effects

of the incarceration, says Carol Ash, chief of interpretation

at the park. It was to help ensure that such a curtailment of

civil liberties never happens again. For more information,

    Hagerman

2014 INAUGURAL BIRDING FESTIVALOne of the most popular forms of recreation in Southern

Idaho is birding. In the agri-lands of cattle and sugar beets,

I get a lot of strange looks when farmers see me peering

across their fields with binoculars in search of bobolinks,

harriers and horned larks, Wallace Keck says. But in theHagerman Valley and refuges of the Snake River, birding is

common and respectable, which makes it the perfect place

for the inaugural Hagerman Birding Festival, which is set for

Feb. 14-16, 2014. I will feel right at home as the town

welcomes both birds and birders, Keck says. At the festival,

my lifetime passion will meet like-minded birders in the

pursuit of Southern Idahos bounty. Sarah Harris, who is

helping to plan the festival, says the event will feature more

than 25 individual birding events, and there will be a number

geared toward birders who are also photographers.

The possibility exists to see as many as 100 bird species

during the festival, she says. What a great way

to kickstart anyones big year! For more information, visit www.facebook.com/HagermanBirdFestival.

THOUSAND SPRINGS WINERY BED AND BREAKFASTMarguerite and Bernard James, owners of Thousand

rivers edge when they visited the region, before eventually

moving to the area. We decided to change our lives in order

to live here, Marguerite James says. After obtaining the

permits to run a bed and breakfast, we purchased the

property and opened March 1, 2013. Both the winery and

bed-and-breakfast offer guests gorgeous canyon waterfall

views, and the surrounding area is perfect for birdwatchers,

fishermen and stargazers. The vineyard features

700 Chardonnay vines planted alongside 1,300 Syrah

and 100 Merlot vines. Sip on a glass of their delicious

BASE JUMPINGFor an adrenaline rush like no other, head to

TandemBASE, where you can experience a one-of-a-kind

thrill ride that lets the average person see what its like to do

a BASE jump. Sean Chuma, an instructor at TandemBASE,

has taken more than 200 people on jumps since the company

opened in 2009. Ive enjoyed jumping with people of all

different ages and walks of life. Ive taken adrenaline junkies

and stay-at-home moms, he says. One person in particular

whos been forever embedded in my memory is Dorothy

Custer, who wanted to do a Tandem BASE jump with me,

from the 486-foot Perrine Bridge, for her 102nd birthday.

On the day of the jump, we both had great feelings. News

cameras were all over the place, and much of the community

came to show support. Chuma says Dorothy showed no

hesitation as they jumped. She giggled as we landed and

smiled from ear to ear. That was one of the most memorable

days of my life. Dorothy told me she never thinks about age,

just positive thoughts and does what she wants to do.

Dorothy even appeared on The Tonight Showwith Jay Lenoafter her BASE jump. For more information on TandemBASE,
