OLD SHIP SURFACES IN THE MIDDLE OF MANHATTAN† 九一一世貿遺址發現十八世紀古船

The busy construction1 site where New

York’s World Trade Centers once stood came

to a halt2 when a ship from the 18th century

was uncovered3 twenty feet below ground.

Archaeologists4 say the ship was sunk in the

early 1800s to help add land to Manhattan Island.

Taiwanese passport holders may soon be able

to travel to the EU without a visa.1 Trips would

be limited to less than ninety days and would also

include the non-EU countries of Norway, Iceland,

and Switzerland. This is good news for Taiwanese travel agencies,† but the proposal still needs the

approval2 of the EU Parliament.3

The series of heat waves this summer may be a sign of worse things to come. In the US, days of nearly 40°C heat caused power blackouts,1 and train travel was disrupted.2 Asia also suffered, with people flooding hospitals due to heat-related illnesses. Some scientists say these unusually high temperatures will be

the norm3 by 2100. The heat will put stress on crops and livestock4 and cause food and water shortages.5 As we look for ways to battle global warming, we may also need to work on developing ways to live on our hotter planet.

使役動詞的用法

「使役」指讓別人 /叫別人 /要別人去做某動作。複習一下常見的使役動詞用法：

a let三態為 let–let–let，表示「讓；允許」，句型為：

• My mother lets me stay out late on weekend nights.我媽讓我在週末夜晚晚歸。

b make三態為make–made–made，表示「強迫；要」，主動句型與 let相同。

c have三態為 have–had–had，表示「要求；叫」，主動句型與 let相同。

H: My favorite story is about the Jade Rabbit.† Three wise men begged food from a fox, a monkey, and a rabbit.

S: What happened next?

H: The animals couldn’t find any food, so the rabbit jumped into the fire and cooked himself for the men.

S: That’s a generous3 rabbit!

H: The wise men then let the rabbit live on the Moon forever.

S: The Moon comes up often in these stories.

H: That’s why this day is called Moon Festival. Also, the Moon looks really big and bright this time of the year.

S: So, where does barbecuing come in?† Is there a story about that?

H: No. It’s a newer tradition.4 It probably started because we Taiwanese love to eat!

THE right to education is recognized2 as

a basic human right by the United

Nations.† Therefore, promoting3 education is

not only a teacher’s or parent’s duty. It is

something that everyone should do his or her

part to help with. Nobel Peace Prize†

nomineeu Greg Mortenson sets a great

example for those in support of this basic

human right.

In 1993, Mortenson got lost and hurt on a

hiking trip and was saved by the kind people

of the remote4 village of Korphe in Pakistan.†

He was surprised to find that the village had

no school. The local children’s only way to

practice writing was with sticks in the mud.

As he left the village, Mortenson promised5

that he would return to build a school.

Mortenson sold his car, left his job, and

gave speeches to raise money. Finally, he

cocreated the nonprofitu organization Central

Asia Institute (CAI). Its purpose is to build

schools in remote areas of South Asia. In

1996, Mortenson made good on his promise

by building a school and a bridge for the

Mortenson’s story spread. At the request1 of local

leaders, he started to build schools for boys and girls in

Afghanistan.u By doing so, he is challenging2 the area’s

traditional belief that women should not be educated.

He also faces many difficulties, such as threats3 from

terrorists,u wars, and earthquakes.4 However, he and

the locals he works with believe that education is the

only way to make a positive and long-lastingu change.

For the local people, education is the best way to

improve their lives and control their future. Instead of

picking up weapons,5 the children are taking up pens.

Over the years, CAI has built 131 schools, benefiting

58,000 students. Over half of those are girls who

weren’t allowed education in the past. Even so, there

are 120 million children in the world that don’t have

access to education. CAI and Mortenson have started

a campaign,u Pennies for Peace, to ask for the world’s

help for these children. Every penny and pencil

gives a child a chance for proper education
