THE room is filled with men in suits and women in beautiful

dresses. A winner’s name is called out, and the room breaks

out in applauseu as that person walks to the stage. Strangely, the

speech is over in seconds. Was that only five words? Of course it

was. We’re at the Webby Awards!†

Celebrating excellence1 on the Internet, the Webby Awards

have been called “the highest Internet honor” by the New York

Times. They are given for online media that are cleverly2 creative,

promote3 care for the planet, or in other ways improve the world.

Past winners include eBay, which changed the way people shop,

and Twitter, which changed the way people communicate.

Two prizes are awarded4 for each category:u one by the

Webby Awards judges and one by public vote. Winners are

given a statue in the shape of a spring.† It’s about a foot tall and

weighs five pounds. The ceremonyu for these awards includes

appearances by movie stars, musicians, and funny acts all

related5 to the Internet. Of course, if you can’t get tickets for

the show, you can watch it online.

One special part of the Webby Awards

is the winners’ speeches, which can be no

longer than five words. However, a lot can be

packed into those few words. For example,

when Egyptian protestersu who used social1

media to fuelu a revolutionu were honored,

the speech that followed caused tears.

Their powerful2 five words were “Injustice,u

oppression,u social media = revolution!”

The creators of Best Game App Angry

Birds caused laughter3 with their speech:

“Stay angry. Get those pigs!” “Can you

hear me now?” was Martin Cooper’s funny

acceptanceu speech. He won the Lifetime4

Achievement Award for being the inventor5

of the cell phone. One of the funniest short

speeches, though, was not made by a

person. The IBM computer, Watson, was

named Webby Person of the Year. Upon

receiving the prize, Watson joked: “Person of

the Year? Ironic!u”

The speeches are only a part of what

makes the Webby Awards so great. Most

importantly, this event points out the creative

things the Internet can do, from keeping us

entertained to changing the world.

share some common features. Frogs lay their eggs

in the water, and the tadpoles that hatch2 from the

eggs look like fish and have gills.u As they get

older, they grow legs and lungs,u which allows

them to leave the water. Many species can also

take in oxygenu through their skin, though this

ability causes them to lose moisture3 quickly.

Another special feature of frogs is their large eyes.

These give frogs the ability to see a lot without having to

move. Some frogs can even see behind them. The eyes

are protected by a third lid† that closes when the frog goes

underwater. These great eyes and a long, sticky4 tongue

make frogs very effective5 hunters.

Just because frogs tend to be small

doesn’t mean you don’t need to be

careful around them. Some frogs are very

poisonous, and these kinds are often brightly

colored. The poison1 is meant to discourage

animals from eating them. Some tribes2 in

South America use this poison to make their

weapons more effective.

Another kind of amphibian that people

don’t usually think about is the salamander,u

which looks like a lizardu without scales.u

While most salamanders are small, giant

salamanders can grow up to two meters long

and live fifty years. Salamanders also have a

few survival3 t r icks. For example, i f

predatorsu grab salamanders by the tail,

some species can leave the tail behind. Over

time, the tail will grow back. In fact, many

salamanders can regrow their tail, legs, eyes,

and even some of their organs.4

From the tiniest frog to the largest

salamander, amphibians are pretty neat.

However, they are very sensitive5 to

pollutionu and climate change, and about

one-third of amphibian species are currently

endangered.u If humans aren’t careful, we

may lose amphibians forever.

—Michelle Adams我怎樣愛你?LoveThee?HowDo I

Throughout the poem, she repeats “I love

thee” , i nc reas ing the power o f the

statement. The poem concludes5 with her

final dramatic claim that even death will not

put a stop to her love.

Browning uses the language of poetry

to capture the feeling of being deeply in

love. By reading her poem, we can, for

a moment, experience this incredible

emotion, too.

7 課文朗讀》正常 CD/MP3 - 5 /慢速 MP3 - 30課程講解》MP3 - 52

THE real beauty of language can be

found in its poetry. Each word is

carefully chosen by the poet to express

an emotion1 or image. Poems are also

the perfect way to express the love in

one’s heart.

One of the most famous love poems in

English is Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s

“Sonnet h 43.” A sonnet is a fourteen-line

poem with a special rhythmh and rhyme

scheme.h The opening line of “Sonnet 43”

makes the reader feel like he or she is

listening in† on a conversation between two

lovers. At f i rst , the intensi ty h of the

author’s2 love is put on the same high level

as religion.3 Browning also contrastsh her

current love to earlier griefsh and lost faith.4
