‘PARTNERS IN LEARNING’ SURVEY

Glendore Public School offers parents and caregivers the opportunity to participate in the Partners in Learning Parent Survey.

This is part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys that NSW Public Schools use to better gain an understanding of student achievement and growth.

This particular survey asks parents and caregivers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Completing this survey will help our school understand parents’/caregivers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include:

Communication between parents/caregivers and staff;

Activities and practices at home; and

Parent/caregiver views on the school's support of learning and behaviour.

This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. We are particularly seeking your input around increasing the range of Healthy Choice options in our canteen, your opinions about wellbeing and online earning in the school.

There are also student and staff equivalents of this survey. Each group will be asked to review practices and processes in the school, and to look for ways to make the school even better. Each survey is entirely online, will take around 15-20 minutes to complete and is completely confidential.

They each remains open until 26/10/18. Participation is entirely voluntary. However, your responses are very much appreciated.

SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL ~ OH THE THINGS WE CA N DO

Show T-shirt will be issued on Monday, Week 10 prior to the dress rehearsal and each performance. Following the show, students will be able to wear their Seussical T-shirts to school as part of official uniform in Term 4 on each Friday. This will end on Friday, 14th December, 2018.

I have really enjoyed the past 3 weeks where I have been able to visit nearly all K-2 classes. Each class has been collaborating as they read, emote and engage with a range of the wonderful new Dr Seuss Big Books, ten in total, which the school now holds. The ability of our students to express themselves, to interpret unknown sounds and nonsense words and to have real fun ‘emoting’ (pretend acting/readers’ theatre) through a range of text has been wonderful. Truly wonderful students we have

REGIONAL PUBL IC SPEAKING

Congratulations goes to Flynn (Early Stage 1) and Taj (Stage 2), who represented our school at the Regional Public Speaking Final this Tuesday. Commiserations to Nyah (Stage 3), who has also qualified for the Hunter Final, but was unable to compete due to being on the Stage 3 ACT Excursion. We are sure she would have done well!

In a fantastic result, both of these wonderful public speakers, as the Callaghan/Port Stephens Zone winners, were the Regional Winners of the ES1 and Stage 2 competitions. They were both presented with special medals and certificates on the day. In a great result for Maryland and Fletcher, our sister school, Maryland PS took out the Stage 1 Final. We are so proud of this amazing achievement! Well done boys!

SASS RECOGNIT ION WEE K

Last week was SASS (School and Support Staff) Recognition Week, which celebrates and recognises all the work undertaken by you in support of education at Glendore. Mark Scott, our Secretary has defined all roles in Education NSW as being either: those who directly impact on students and those who support the staff that directly impact on students.

Collectively as SAM (School Administration Manager), SAO (School Admin Officer), SLSO (School Learning Support Officer), AEO (Aboriginal Education Officer), GA (General Assistant) and SC (School Cleaners), you make up a significant component of our staff: Kathy, Karen B, Karen D, Rachel, Karen T, Michelle M, Michelle F, Lisa, April, Wayne, Margaret, Gavin, Robert, John, Suzie and Sharon.

The teaching staff put on an afternoon tea last Thursday to celebrate all the behind the scenes’ work which occurs in our great school. Our Executive staff took it in turns to ‘man’/’woman’ the phones, so that the whole SASS team could enjoy a well-deserved break together.

DISCOVERY DAY

Well done to our stage 3 students who represented Glendore at this year’s Discovery Day competition at St. Therese’s Primary School. We finished 3rd overall! It was a very eventful day full of using teamwork and engineering skills to design bridges, chairs, water wheels, catapults, bionic hands, power networks and designing a code to send messages through fibre optic roads using only coloured lights.

VALID SCIENCE

Last week, students in Years 6, 8 and 10 sat the VALID Science Test across the state. Our Year 6 students participated on Wednesday. This was an online test, requiring students to use their scientific knowledge to answer short answer, extended response and multiple choice questions. Students enjoyed the challenge and were well behaved during the sessions. A report will be available to parents later in the year. Glendore Public School has become the Hunter’s Training Centre for VALID 6/10 writing and marking over the past 2 years. Our school continues to grow its reputation for excellence in teaching, learning and programming.

PREMIER’S SPELLING B EE

Last Wednesday, Glendore was represented at the Regional Premiers Spelling Bee by four fantastic spellers.

In Stage 2, Katherine H and Olivia F made it through to rounds 4 and 5 respectively. They both report that it was a beneficial experience and that they'd like the opportunity to participate again.

In Stage 3, both Emily F and Charlee T made it through to round 2, even though they recognised that the words presented became difficult very quickly in round 1 at that level. They said that it was a good experience for learning hard words very fast. Congratulations to all four girls for making it to the Regionals and for representing Glendore Public School in the challenge!

HUNTER VALLEY ZOO EX CURSION – YEARS 1 & 2

Last week, Stage 1 visited the Hunter Valley Zoo over two days. They had a wonderful zoo keeper Kristen, who allowed students to meet and pat some animals including blue tongues, wombats, koalas, alligators and snakes. Students had a great time feeding the kangaroos, some of whom even had joeys in their pouches! A highlight of the day was watching the white lions being fed. They were so big! An enjoyable day was had by all.

MINI ME

On Wednesday, 19th September, 15 Stage 3 students will be attending a hackathon at the University of Newcastle. This is the training session for the new robots. The idea is those students will come back and help support the rest of the stage in operating the new robots to complete the task set by the MiniMe project in Term 4.

MAKERS AND TECHNOLOGY FESTIVAL This week, Stage 3 were invited to participate in an industry based festival. This requires them to demonstrate activities from STEM classes showing how robots and programming are used in Education.

The Makers and Technology Festival is on at the Newcastle Jockey Club on Friday 21st of September and on Saturday the 22nd of September.

On Friday the displays are opened up to schools from 1pm and on Saturday the displays are open to the general public from 9am to 4pm. Please come along and support local industry and of course, Glendore Public School.

Thank you all for the prompt return of notes for this activity. Further information will come home early next term. We will also look for 2019 at how best we cater for ‘Learning to Swim’ programs in both our K-2 and 3-6 departments for Term 4 in 2019. There will be a survey for this so that we can best assess the needs of our students and the feelings of our parent/caregiver community.

SMITH FAMILY SAVER P LUS PROGRAM

The Smith Family Saver Plus program has assisted over 1,100 families in the Hunter with $500 for education costs. The program’s impact in our local community and across Australia has been significant and can mean the difference for a child attending a costly excursion or purchasing a new laptop. Saver Plus participants in Newcastle have been using their matched savings, of up to $500, to help pay for educational costs including school uniforms, textbooks, excursions, laptops, tuition costs, instrument purchases, dance classes, sports fees and equipment. People may be eligible to join Saver Plus if they or their partner: - have a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card; - are at least 18 years or over; - have some regular income from work; - are a parent or guardian of a child at school this year OR are

attending or returning to vocational education themselves.

TREASURER NEEDED FOR THE CANTEEN

The Glendore Public School Canteen is calling for help! We are in genuine need of a Canteen Treasurer. The ideal volunteer would have one or two hours free per week, have some knowledge in PAYG and basic bookkeeping skills. You would need to provide a statement of income and expenditure each month to the P&C Treasurer and President and would need to come into school to do banking as required.

The P&C are an inclusive group who are always looking for more hands on deck and Idea’s. We love offering fun activities like the Father’s/Mother’s Day Stall, Colour Runs, Easter Raffles, Movie nights and much more. All of which raise valuable funds that go back into the school for our children! Please get involved! If you can help with the Canteen Treasurer position please email [email protected]

YEARS 5 & 6 RETURN F ROM CANBERRA

What a busy, fun week Stage 3 have had! They had a fantastic time on our Canberra Excursion, visiting many iconic Canberra attractions, consolidating and learning lots along the way. They particularly loved our night at Questacon where we explored and enjoyed the many great hands-on activities. Thank you so much to our parents and caregivers for supporting our students to experience this wonderful activity.

My particular thanks to our Excursion Organiser, Mrs Santleben, Mrs Boyce (Exec), Mr Booth (Exec), Mrs Rigley (Medication), Mrs Pirillo, Miss Burrow and Mr Bull (Learning Support) for sacrificing their personal time and family time to provide such an authentic learning experience.

At Parliament House, the students and staff were lucky enough to witness a vote on a bill, spotting many politicians, including new Prime Minister Scott Morrison and meeting our local Federal Member, Sharon Claydon. Other attractions included: The Royal Australian Mint, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum, Museum of Australian Democracy, Electoral Education Centre, Indonesian Embassy, CSIRO, The Australian War Memorial and the list goes on.

In the next column are some quick report from each of our three bus groups.

STUDENT BANKING COMP ETIT ION

There are two weeks of Student Banking left for this term. Our top two classes in the Student Banking Competition are 3/4F and 1P in 1st place, 1F in 2nd place and KM in 3rd place.

There will be no student banking on the last day of Term.

INDIVIDUAL ACT COACH REPORTS

Bus 1: Stage 3 had an awesome time in ACT/Canberra this week. We had an great time visiting places like Questacon, The Royal Australian Mint, Parliament House, as well as many other great places. We loved learning about Science, Technology, History, Geography and watching Mrs Boyce go down the Giant Drop at Questacon. The long bus rides weren’t so boring with Mrs Santleben and Mrs Boyce entertaining us with their amazing singing skills with karaoke, along with Mr Bull’s fantastic dance moves. They don’t call us Bus 1 for nothing. Molly and Nyah - Bus 1

Bus 2: Here are a few highlights from Bus 2 -

“I liked Parliament House because I got to carry a Mace and got to act as the Serjeant-At-Arms”- Mayar

“I enjoyed Questacon the most because we had a lot of fun things to interact with, like playing air hockey with a robot” - Bailey

“I enjoyed the National Museum because I discovered new things like seeing the size of Phar Lap’s heart” - Destiney

“I really liked the War memorial because I learnt lots about the war and different items that they used” – Cooper

“I enjoyed the earthquake room because it felt like we were really in an earthquake but we knew we were safe” – Aaliyah

“My favourite experience was at Parliament House because we experienced parliament in action and learnt how it runs” - Georgia

Bus 3: After Mr Booth and Mrs Pirillo realised we were going to Canberra and not Dubbo, we headed straight to the mint and spent all our money buying more money We had a great time discovering new facts and information at the CSIRO. Tuesday was a full day. We had a great time using the interactive displays at the museum of democracy and dressed up as politicians. We voted apple as our favourite fruit at the Electoral Education Centre. Wednesday we saw our Prime Minister and we were really great at debating and much better -behaved than the real ministers. We went wild at Questacon and conquered our fear of heights on the big drop. On Thursday, we investigated where a few could end up if we pursue our sport at the AIS and formed the Glendore school band at the Indonesian embassy. We have realised Mrs Pirillo isn’t the best at finding exits, Mr Booth tries to floss but shouldn’t, and we can all be very quiet in the gymnasium when we try. From the Bus 3 Crew.

GLENDORE PS ~ ENROLLING KIN DER 2019 NOW

Do you know of anyone with a child who lives in the Glendore Public School enrolment area who could commence Kindergarten next year? We have included our Zone Map again in the next column. Please note the satellite image. Please note that while the school locator tool at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder/index is inaccurate. It will incorrectly attribute new parts of Sanctuary Estate and Hidden Waters Estate to Minmi PS. All of Sanctuary, Hidden Waters, Nikkinbah Ridge; all of Kingfisher Drive, Waterside Drive and Discovery are in Glendore’s Zone. The new Sanctuary North and Sanctuary Views (developing now) are in Glendore’s Enrolment Zone. Always visit Glendore Public School’s website, its administration centre or that of Minmi PS to see live “Near Maps”, which are current as of mid-June, 2018, unlike Google Maps.

The Outlook and its future expansion is zoned for Minmi. Half of Maryland is in Glendore’s enrolment zone. A “Near View” aerial map is included below to clarify the areas.

NEW LEARNING PROGRES SIONS & SYLLABUS DOC UMENTS Staff will be looking at the new Literacy and Numeracy Progressions over the next five months, prior to their staggered implementation in 2019.

This is alongside 2019 implementation of the newly-revised Science and Technology K-6 syllabus (to better align with the new 7-8 Technology and 7-10 Science syllabi, and the new K-10 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Syllabus shortly after.
