Save the date

Our School Book Parade will be on Tuesday 3rd September at 2:20pm. Students are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character / book.

Education Week – Open Day The theme for 2019 Education Week is Every student, every voice. It is a celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public education system gives students the skills they need in order to have and express a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens. This year we will be holding our annual Education Week Open Day on Wednesday 7th August. This will include a short assembly followed by a parent session in the library about how you can help your child in maths. This will be run by our two Instructional Leaders, Mrs Milena Petrunic and Mrs Leonie Wood. At 10am parents / carers will be able to visit their child’s classroom. This is a chance to have a look at your child’s work and see them in action in the classroom. From

10:50am there will be a picnic lunch (weather depending). Please feel free to bring along a picnic blanket and some food to share. Kindergarten 2020 enrolling now It is that time of year again when we are accepting Kindergarten 2020 enrolments.I highly encourage you to enrol your child this term as our Kindergarten Transition program starts in Term 4. The transition program is integral in your child having a successful start to schooling. If you know someone in the area that is looking to enrol their child please encourage them to do this prior to the 28th September. Please note that as of Term 4 the Department of Education is bringing in a new enrolment policy that may change the guidelines of accepting students who are out of our local catchment area. If you are unsure of which school is local to you please go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder

K-2 Gymnastics We have been very fortunate once again to receive a small amount of funding through the Federal Governments Sporting Schools program. This term the money is enabling all K-2 students to participate in a gymnastics program that started this week. The program will be run by qualified instructors from Be Skilled Be Fit. Swim Scheme This week a note went home to all students in Years 2 – 6 about the Department of Education’s Swim Scheme program. The School Swimming Scheme is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. The scheme is conducted over ten days. Each daily lesson is 45 minutes. Students who have not reached a satisfactory standard of water safety and survival skills, and are unable to swim 25 metres confidently unaided in deep water, are eligible to participate in the School Swimming Scheme. The Scheme focuses on students who are either non swimmers or beginning swimmers in Years 2 and 3, but students in Years 4 – 6 who are still beginner swimmers are able to attend. Instruction this year will take place each day at Merrylands Swimming Pool for two weeks. If you did not receive a note please either see your child’s class teacher or the lovely ladies in the office.

Lost Property

Unfortunately our lost property pile is growing on a daily basis. I know you share my frustration in seeing piles of new clothing that children have misplaced. If your child has lost an item of

clothing then please come up to the veranda outside the school office to collect it. Any unlabelled items not taken within two weeks will be put into our second hand clothing pile.

Slime for sale

Two of our Year 6 students have been working extra hard in making slime in order to sell to students. The money raised is going towards helping Year 6 to pay for end of year events. Please note that all slime sold is non-toxic and does not have the chemical borax in it.

PBL

The PBL team has been working hard to promote the school rules of being safe, respectful and a learner. Just as important are the core values that we aspire all our students to uphold. This term the PBL team and teachers will be working with students to understand the importance of these core values: INTEGRITY: Being consistently honest and trustworthy. EXCELLENCE: Striving for the highest personal achievement in all aspects of schooling and individual and community action, work and life-long learning. RESPECT: Having regard for yourself and others, lawful and just authority and diversity

within Australian society and accepting the right of others to hold different or opposing views. RESPONSIBILITY: Being accountable for your individual and community's actions towards yourself, others and the environment. COOPERATION: Working together to achieve common goals, providing support to others and engaging in peaceful resolution of conflict. PARTICIPATION: Being a proactive and productive individual and group member, having pride in and contributing to the social and economic wealth of the community and the nation. CARE: Concern for the wellbeing of yourself and others, demonstrating empathy and acting with compassion. FAIRNESS: Being committed to the principles of social justice and opposing prejudice, dishonesty and injustice. DEMOCRACY: Accepting and promoting the rights, freedoms and responsibilities of being an Australian citizen. The Government recognises the importance of the core values to the community. These values represent the aspirations and beliefs of the Australian community as a whole, including its concern for equity, excellence and the promotion of a caring, civil and just society. They are common to a range of secular and religious world-views and are found in most cultures.

Book Fair

We are delighted to announce that Book Fair will be returning to Granville South Public School.

Students and parents are welcome to visit in the library and make purchases on the 2nd, 5th and 6th of August. Purchasing times will be 8:30-8:55am and lunch time at 11:00-11:40pm. We would love to see you all!

Cash and EFTPOS payments will be available.

Sport Update We have already started Term 3 with some awesome sporting achievements. Winter season is underway with all teams trying their bests and developing their skills in their chosen sport. A reminder to parents, in order to continue playing this term, a payment of $25 is required. If you have already paid for both terms please disregard this. A reminder, all coaches, players and parents must be following the code of conduct at all times. It is a privilege to be representing our school at these events and students must be displaying respect and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches have a copy for anyone that needs to cite the code of conduct at the games.

Good luck to our students attending ZONE Athletics Carnival on the 8th August. We wish you luck.

Colour Run We’re holding our annual colour run this year as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on Wednesday 28th August. This is a sponsorship based fundraiser, and we’re looking to raise $10,000 for our Year six students Keep your eyes peeled for the sponsorship forms which were sent home with your child last week. Once you have the form, jump online at schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Once you do this and raise at least $1 online, you will be entered into the $30,000 Ultimate Family Experience! Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school! The school colour run is a healthy fundraiser that we hope you’ll get behind. The event sends the right message to students about having fun while being healthy, all while helping the school raise funds. We’re looking for all students to participate and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to come down on the day. If you have any questions about the colour run please contact the school. Thanks for supporting the school and we hope to see you at the event!

Around the School

Kindergarten reflected on being at school for 100 days with our ‘100 Days of Learning’ celebration which took place last Thursday. Students dressed up and completed literacy, numeracy and craft activities that related to the number 100.

Excellent writing from Tiyana.
