PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO PASTORS PONDERINGS

Dear Parishioners, The Trajectory of the Lenten Sunday Readings of Cy-cle B is one of increasingly pointing out God’s mercy towards us. Last Sunday, we remembered an angry Jesus, cleansing the temple of its merchants. This Sunday, though we’re reminded in the First Reading that “early and often” God sent prophets to the people of Israel to warn them of their transgressions and their consequences, the Gospel Reading itself is one of mercy. Jesus tells Nicodemus: “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that it might be saved through him.” Jesus reiterates the sad truth that people often prefer darkness to light so that their evil actions may remain hidden. But the mes-sage is fundamentally of compassion, that God does understand. That message of God’s emerging under-standing of us, our failings, and the best way to bring us back, continues in the Readings next Sunday. For now, let us focus just focus on both Jesus’ insight, that we seem to prefer darkness to light, and then his promise that he did not come here to condemn us, but to bring us back. These words have recently played out in our communi-ty. Our region’s homelessness situation has perhaps moved from our grounds and even largely from our neighborhood. But it remains with us in other forms: There’s a street at the other end of town filled with peo-ple reduced to living in their RVs. As a group as super-ficially annoying as any group people experiencing poverty living in boxes or sleeping under tarps, the City recently tried to get rid of them. How? To expel them openly would seem harsh. So they tried to change the parking regulations on the street in question to make it illegal to park there for more than three hours and tried to bury the matter on the city council’s “consent calen-dar” where items already decided are found. Well, a number of us stopped the Council from doing so, successfully postponing final decision on changing the parking regulation on the street by six weeks – about 40 days. Can a solution be found for the 20 or so RVs parked on that street in 40 days? We will see, and Fullerton’s interfaith community will be working with the City to do so. However, in any case, the situa-tion of those RV dwellers will not go unnoticed. Their lives won’t be destroyed or otherwise put into great turmoil by a simple _and hidden_ change _in a parking regula-tion_. What will happen now will play out in the open for all to see. And so we’re all invited to redouble our efforts and respond in a way that shows the same mercy that God has shown us. -- Fr. Dennis

Queridos feligreses, La trayectoria de las lecturas cuaresmales dominicales del ciclo B es una que señala siempre más claramente la miseri-cordia de Dios hacia nosotros. Cierto, el domingo pasado, recordamos a un Jesús enojado, limpiando el templo echan-do a los merchantes adentro. Este domingo, aunque la Pri-mera Lectura nos recuerda que Dios “exhortó continuamente por profetas” al pueblo de Israel para hacerlos conscientes de sus transgresiones y las consecuencias de ellas, el Evan-gelio de hoy habla de la misericordia de Dios. Jesús le dice a Nicodemo: "Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que se salvara por él". Jesús reitera la triste verdad de que las personas a menudo prefieren la os-curidad a la luz para que sus malas acciones permanezcan ocultas. Bueno, algunos de nosotros lo descubrimos y pusimos fre-nos a esta propuesta escondida, y él ayuntamiento decidió a retomar el tema en seis semanas o más o menos 40 días. ¿Se puede encontrar una solución para los aproximadamen-te 20 vehículos recreativos estacionados en esa calle en 40 días? Veremos, y la comunidad interreligiosa de Fullerton trabajará con la Ciudad para lograrla. UN ACTO DE COMUNION ESPIRITUAL

Today’s reading from the second book of Chronicles contains a sort of “mini-history” of Israel. It highlights God’s mercies in choosing Cyrus the Persian to be an instrument of deliverance when the people were in captivity in Babylon. Despite their sinfulness and the deserved punishment they were undergoing, God’s mercy was lavished on the people in the form of a mirac-ulous act of liberation. The Letter to the Ephesians, in much more theological terms, gives a similar account of a God “who brought us to life with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” The author stresses that it was when we were “dead in our transgressions” that God saved us, an act of pure grace. He emphasizes that it is not our own efforts that freed us from sin (“this is not from you”); ra-ther, “it is the gift of God.” This, of course, is the heart of the entire Pauline corpus, that salvation comes to us by faith in God’s mercy, revealed in the death of Jesus. Lent, a Season of the Word Each year on the First Sunday of Lent we hear one of the Gospel accounts of the temptation of Jesus. In Luke’s ac-count, the devil cites the scriptures repeatedly, urging Jesus to interpret them in a false, self-serving way—if God sends angels to protect those whom God loves (as it says in Psalm 91), then prove it! But Jesus resists this insidious temptation by turning to scripture passages that tell of right relationship with God—living by God’s word, trusting in God, and wor-shiping God alone. Jesus himself listened to the inspired word of God and let it shape and form him. Through the liturgy, we do the same. The readings we hear at Mass can teach us, but that is not their primary function. Rather, the scriptures are meant to reveal the Lord to us, to let us experience his presence, and to form us in our Christian identity. Christ’s presence is re-alized by his spoken word, “since it is he himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 7). La oración colecta Esta oración se recita después que el sacerdote dice: “Oremos”. Está precedida por un momento de silencio en el cual la asamblea, en silencio, presenta sus peticiones a Dios. El sacerdote que preside la celebración, las “colecta”, de ahí el nombre de esta oración y, siguiendo una tradición antiquísima de la Iglesia: “Se dirige regularmente a Dios Padre por Cristo en el Espíritu Santo” (Instrucción General para el Uso del Misal Romano, 54). Esta misma oración es la que constituye a la asamblea como una comunidad orante, pues no sólo la invita a orar, sino a ser consciente de la presencia de Dios. El Amén que concluye la oración reafirma lo dicho por el sacerdote, por ello debe ser con-tundente. La razón de esta oración que “recoge” la in-tención del pueblo, explica la postura orante del sacerdote: de pie y con las manos extendidas.
