Inwoners in Dennestraat is ontstoke oor ’nvermeende onwettige varkslagting wat so-wat ’n week terug almal in die woonbuurt ophol gejaag het.

Maar wat belastingbetalers nog meer dwars indie krop steek, is die feit dat nog die polisie, nogdie metropolisie, nog die DBV gereageer het opklagtes van die gemeenskap nie.

Volgens Peter Sutter van die Brackenfell-be-lastingbetalersvereniging, het bure hom verledeSaterdag kort ná 12:00 in kennis gestel oor driearbeiders wat by Dennestraat 7 besig wasom ’n groot vark se keel af te sny.

land geword het,” sê hy.Die Stad Kaapstad kon nie verduidelik hoe-

kom die Stad se metropolisie nie op dié dag gere-ageer het op die klagtes nie, maar het wel beves-tig dat die gesondheidsdepartement twee keerdaarna by die huis was.

“Ongelukkig was niemand by die huis nie endie beamptes kon nie toegang kry tot die perseelnie. Geen gesondheidsoortredings is egter ge-identifiseer van waar die beamptes gestaan hetnie,” sê raadslid Lungiswa James, burgemees-terskomiteelid vir gesondheidsdienste.

’n Egpaar van Kuilsrivier het Vrydag 9Maart hul 69ste huweliksherdenking ge-vier.

Die “Kuilsrivier-konfytkoning”, Jan Fou-rie (91), en sy eggenoot, Lulu Fourie (87), isnog net so gelukkig soos die dag toe hulle me-

kaar 70 jaar gelede by ’n partytjie ontmoethet.

Jan, ’n veteraan van die Tweede Wêreld-oorlog, is bekend in die gemeenskap vir sysmullekker tuisgemaakte konfyt. “Ek het diekonfytmakery maar net as ’n stokperdjie be-gin toe ek afgetree het, maar nou is almal sogaande daaroor dat ek sommer al ’n titelhet,” sê Jan.

Lulu was ’n bloemis in Wynberg en Jan ’ningenieur by Pollsmoor toe hulle mekaarontmoet het.

“Toe ek nog ’n jong man was het ek altydvir die Here gevra om vir my die regte vroute gee. Hy het my gebede verhoor en vir Luluoor my pad gestuur,” sê Jan.

Hulle is ’n jaar later getroud en Lulu hethul eerste seun alleen groot gemaak terwylJan in ’n ander land weermagdiens verrighet. “Ek het my seun vir die eerste keer ont-moet toe hy drie jaar oud was,” sê Jan.

Volgens Lulu was Jan ná hul eerste driekinders baie gretig om nog ’n seun of ’n twee-ling te hê. “Ek was sewe maande swanger toeons by die dokter uitvind dat ek tweeling-dogters verwag,” sê Lulu.

“Die Here het ons rerig geseën met diewonderlikste kinders,” sê Jan.

Jan en Lulu het altesaam ses kinders, 14kleinkinders en 10 agter-kleinkinders. “Onsis ’n vreeslike liefdevolle familie en almal isbaie lief vir Ouma en Oupa,” sê Annie Eras-mus, Jan en Lulu se oudste dogter.

Die enigste raad omtrent ’n gelukkige hu-welik wat dié twee kan gee, is om altyd joulewensmaat met liefde en geduld te hanteer.

Egpaar vier samesyn van 69 j.

TheSkills and InformationCentreofKalk-fontein in Kuils River recently opened itsdoors to the community.

The purpose of the new centre is to providethe Kalkfontein community with a placewhere they can do training in computer litera-cy, office administration and even aerobics.

“Wewant touse this centrenot only for com-munity development but also for local busi-nesses to use for their office administration,”says Jackson Ntlekiso, chairperson of theKuils River Youth Development Forum(KYDF).

The centre is still in the early stages of de-

velopment but will be equipped with comput-ers, fax machines, printers, photocopy ma-chines, telephones and internet connection.

According to Ntlekiso, they hope to use thecentre as a means to develop office adminis-tration skills and use it to generate money forthe centre.

The centre is run by the KYDF in partner-ship with other organisations and forums.

“This building is still not finished and weneed help and assistance in order to reach ourgoals. Casidra donated a number of computersand a photocopy machine to the centre but westill need to paint the walls, replace the win-dows and fix the bathrooms,” says Ntlekiso.

The first training sessions for this year’sYouth Dance Challenge kicked off thisweek.

The event, which is being held for thethird year, is organised by DanceCraft Stu-dio (previously known as Fred Astaire Ty-gervalley) in conjunction with media part-ner TygerBurger.

Owner of DanceCraft Studio Marina Mi-lanovic says the choice to sever ties with theFred Astaire franchise affords them greaterfreedom to be involved in social dancingprojects such as the Youth Dance Challenge,Humira Live and Dance for Life Campaignand the Artscape School Arts Festival.

She adds that apart from the name changeeverything elseremains thesame.

High schoollearners from 23schools in fourareas will com-pete in the com-petition thisyear.

Schools fromthe northernsuburbs taking part are Sarepta, SilverSands and Western Cape Sport School, TableView High, Abbotts College, BloubergrantHigh, CBC St John’s Private School, Dur-banville High School, Chesterhouse, CurroPrivate, DF Malan, Settlers, Parow, North-link, Brackenfell, Monument Park, Edge-mead High School and Tygerberg.

City bowl schools participating are SeaPoint High, Cape Town High, Harold Cressy,Gardens Commercial and Jan van Riebeeck.

Thanks to the increased number ofschools this year, the competition will takeon a different format.

“The main change is that we will run thefirst three competitions separately for eachof the four areas. Each area will have a quar-ter-final, semi-final and final competition.The Ultimate Final event will then see thebest couples in each of the areas battle it outon the dancefloor at the same time,” Mi-lanovic explained.

She added the couples will this year betrained in dancing the box rumba, mamboand quick step.

Three schools have offered Dancecraft theuse of their halls for training. Schools fromthe city bowl will be trained at GardensCommercial High, Kuils River schools willtrain at the Western Cape Sport School inKuilsRiver, and schools fromMilnertonandBlouberg will train at Bloubergrant High.

Die druiwepluk en saamkuier is ’n lekkermanier om die jaar se uitstappies af te skop.’n Groot groep ATKV-lede het Saterdagog-gend vroeg byeengekom op Christie Myburgse plaas, Groenvlei, om te deel in die jaarlik-se gesinsdruiwepluk en kuier.

Vanjaar is daar ’n goeie oes deur elke lidgepluk. Die kinders het met groot geesdrifdeelgeneem en gehelp om die mandjies vin-nig vol te kry.

Na afloop van die oes is daar lekker saam-gekuier deur die lede.

Volgens Hennie Rootman, organiseerdervan die funksie, was dit die eerste van 2012se gesinsaktiwiteite wat fokus op die klub sebetrokkenheid by die gemeenskap.

Dit bou op tot die uitgebreide boekeprojek

in samewerking met LAPA-Uitgewers, waarAfrikaanse boeke aan verskeie skole en bi-blioteke in die omgewing geskenk word.

Altin van der Merwe (15) van dieHoërskool Brackenfell het dié rarekolskoot op die sesde putjie van dieKuilsrivier-gholfbaan geslaan.

“Ek het die Dinsdag (6 Maart) náskool nege putjies gaan speel toe ekdie kolskoot geslaan het. Ek het be-sluit om die aggressiewe lyn oor diebome te vat reguit na die setperktoe.

“Die bal het mooi suiwer getreken my eerste gedagte was dat dit netkort sou wees. Die putjie speel 302meter lank en ek was verbaas toe ekmy bal in die gat sien.

“Toe ek na my bal begin soek het,was daar ’n sekuriteitswag netlangs die setperk en ’n werker vandie baan wat vir my gesê het my balis in die gat. Die putjie loop redelik

skerp af, so ’n mens kan nie die set-perk van die bof af sien nie.

“Dit was een van daai dae dat al-les mooi geloop het. Ek het 30 houeop daai nege putjies gespeel,” hetAltin trots vertel van sy prestasie.

Ice hockey is much more than just guyssmashing each other into the boards.

Women also smash each other into theboards.

This statement is, of course made tongue-in-cheek, since it really is a complex sportwith tactics and skills intertwining fluidlywith force and determination.

The South African Women’s Ice HockeyTeam held their final practise session atGrandWest’s Ice Station recently before theyjetted off to compete in the World Ice HockeyChampionships in Korea.

Four of the women are from the northernsuburbs: Dalene Rhode (Ravensmead),Nicola Roche (Table View), SamanthaJansen (Bothasig) and Simone van Wyk(Bellville).

This week, 20 of South African’s finest fe-male ice hockey players will be taking partin the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s WorldChampionship Division II Group B.

They’ll be going head to head againstsome of the world’s top ice hockey teamsfrom Belgium, Korea, Iceland, Poland andSpain.

Their manager, Wendy Horn, elaborates:“They play round robin and the one withthe most points get promoted to the next di-vision and the one ending at the bottom isrelegated. Last year we didn’t win a game,but one team pulled out, so no one was rele-gated. We had a very young team, but thisyear we have more experience.”

To take skaters to the next level muchwork has also been done on various “plays”,zone coverage and systems to get them readyfor the big days ahead.

Dalene (17) was the youngest memberlast year and has been playing ice hock-ey since she was just eight years old.

According to Horn this sport isundoubtedly growing.

“There were about 30 new

ladies in Gauteng when last they only had10!”

Smaller sports in the country struggle tofind sponsors, but if everyone who has thetalent gets to the respective ice-rinks andjoins the burgeoning “masses” then thiswill also become a thing of the past.

“You got to be tough – personality wiseand physically. Other important attributesinclude fitness, skating skills and hand-eyeco-ordination.

“Get down to the ice rink, especially theyounger ones, and practise!” she exclaims.

Universiteit Wes-Kaapland se aanspraakop die titel in die topafdeling het egter iet-wat van ’n knou gekry toe sy kragmetingteen WP-klub onbeslis geëindig het. On-danks knap boulwerk deur Nathan Swartz(5/47) en Aviwe Mgijima (3/36) moes UWKreik na ’n groterige wentelling van 245 lo-pies. Dale Campbell (103*) en sy makkershet moedig probeer, maar kon net 169/8haal. Akkurate draaiboulwerk deur LouisDelport (5/69) het Bellville (204) ’n oorwin-ning met 18 lopies oor Victoria (126) besorg.Vroeër het stewige bydraes deur C. Russel(47*) en Stefan Joubert (40) die Bellvillieteop koers gehou.

Ryan Milne (99) het uitstekend walgegooivir Edgemead teen Tygerberg-klub, maarEdgemead se 202 lopies was nie genoeg om’nnederlaagaf teweernie.Tygerberg (98/4)moes uiteindelik net 97 lopies vir ’n oorwin-ning aanteken – wat Jancan Adams (38*) semanne met gemak reggekry het.

Durbanville, wat ’n eerstebeurt-voor-sprong van 109 lopies teen Primrose gehadhet, het die besoekers Saterdag vir 161 lo-pies uitgehaal – danksy Morné Heyneke(4/22) en Mark de Stadtler (4/44) – sodat dieDurbies die verlangde 53 lopies vir ’n oor-winning vermag het met agt paaltjiesstaande. Milnerton het egter ’n donker dagop die veld van die Strandfontein-klub be-leef. Ten spyte van ’n goeie veelsydige ver-toning deur Robin van Harte (4/52 en 49) enRichard Holman, is Milnerton (118) met 211lopies deur Strandfontein (262/9, gesl.) ver-slaan.
