The mastercard foundation scholars program is one of KNUST’s single biggest partnerships in our recent history.

The Program’s theory of change and vision to raise transformative leaders from mainly economically disadvantaged backgrounds bodes well with KNUST’s vision of providing concessionary opportunity for higher education to students from schools classified by the Ghana Education Service as Less Endowed who

ANNUAL SCHOLARS DIRECTORY, 2014-2015 11

would though have the requisite passes but would not survive the competetion for entry into programmes of KNUST.

The sheer numbers of applications received for the past two years since the Program began draws our attention as an institution to the shouting need to seek more partnerships with corporate institutions and foundations to meet the genuine requests for assistance created by social and economic inequities.

Our Scholars have demonstrated that there is a strong positive correlation between adequate student and administrative support and excellent academic performance; often for the student with a sense of purpose.

The African continent today faces a challenge of a people losing their humanity to the quest for quick fixes for everything. The value of compassion is rare. Even rarer is the quintessential sense of ethics and selfless dedication to dare the status quo. This process of change must first begin with self; a transformed individual will stand the inevitable test of degeneration into decadence.

This is the bedrock the Scholars Program at KNUST seeks to lay for its Scholars.

KNUST is grateful to the MasterCard Foundation for this opportunity to lead the charge to raise this critical mass of global leaders.

Congratulations to all Scholars!

Alumni Network Graduates of the Scholars Program will be connected through an alumni network that offers information, resources, and opportunities to consult with other graduates.

ScholarsStudents selected for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program are provided with opportunities to realize their full potential. Through Foundation partners, they receive holistic financial, academic, and emotional support as they transition from secondary to university education and into the workforce. Scholars will build core competencies such as critical thinking, problem solving, and working across diverse groups to ensure their success in the global economy.

Partner institutions will identify and select young men and women from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated the following attributes.

Academic Talent Scholars value learning and have the drive to complete their education.

Commitment to giving Back Scholars have a demonstrated commitment to improving their communities.

Potential to lead Scholars will become role models, mentors, and problem solvers.

The Program will serve an estimated 15,000 young people at the secondary and university levels. It has a particular focus on Africa, which has the world’s youngest population structure. The continent is experiencing unprecedented economic growth; yet, it faces the lowest secondary and university education enrolment rates in comparison with the rest of the world.

KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (KNUST)

historical backgroundThe Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology grew out of the Kumasi College of Technology which was established by a Government Ordinance on 6th October, 1951 The College was officially opened on 22nd January, 1952 with 200 Teacher Training students transferred from Achimota College in Accra at the coast, to form the nucleus of this new College 250 kilometers up country in the forest belt.

In October, 1952, the School of Engineering and the Department of Commerce were established and the first students were admitted. From 1952 to 1955, the School of Engineering prepared students for professional qualifications only. In 1955, the School embarked on courses leading to the University of London Bachelor of Engineering External Degree Examinations.A Pharmacy Department was established in January, 1953, with the transfer of the former School of Pharmacy from Korle-Bu Hospital, Accra, to the College.

The Department ran a two-year comprehensive course in Pharmacy leading to the award of the Pharmacy Board Certificate.

A Department of Agriculture was opened in the same year to provide a number of ad hoc courses of varying duration, from a few terms to three years, for the Ministry of Agriculture. A Department of General Studies was also instituted to prepare students for the Higher School Certificate Examinations (Advance level) in both Science and Arts subjects and to give instruction in such subjects as were requested by the other departments to make successful candidates eligible for degree courses they offer.

Once established, the College began to grow and in 1957, the School of Architecture, Town Planning and Building was inaugurated and its first students were admitted in January, 1958, for professional courses in Architecture, Town Planning and Building Technology. As the College expanded, it was decided to make the Kumasi College of Technology a purely science and technology institution. In pursuit of this policy, the Teacher Training College, with the exception of the Art School (considered as running Technological programs), was transferred in January, 1958, to the Winneba Training College (whose nucleus has become part of the present day University of Education Winneba).

In 1959, the Commerce Department was transferred to Achimota to form the nucleus of the present School of Administration of the University of Ghana, Legon.

Accession to University Status – The birth of KNUSTIn December, 1960, the Government of Ghana appointed a University Commission to advise it on the future development of University Education in Ghana, in connection with the proposal to transform both the University College of Ghana and the Kumasi College of Technology into two independent Universities in Ghana.

AnnuAl SCHOlARS DIRECTORY, 2014-2015 15

Following the report of the commission which came out early 1961, the Kumasi College of Technology was thus transformed into a full-fledged University and 1961 and re-named Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (after the President of the 1st Republic of Ghana) by an Act of Parliament on 22nd August, 1961. It was officially inaugurated on Wednesday, 20th November 1961,

The University’s name was changed to University of Science and Technology after the military coup d’état of 24th February, 1966 which overthrew Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. However, by another act of Parliament, Act 559 of 1998, the University has reverted to her original name of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, (KNUST) Kumasi.

I grew up in a community where poverty, illiteracy and corruption hit almost everybody. Since the earlier generations did not put an end to such problems, it has now become a culture. I never wanted to be like that, so I asked myself how to lead a decent life and the ultimate answer has always been ‘through education.’ Therefore, I do not take the opportunity of reaching the tertiary level for granted because I happen to be the first from my family to reach this level.

I am regarded as a symbol of hope to my society that one day the impossible will become a reality. Therefore, I have a responsibility to fulfill the dreams of my community, Gambia and Africa at large.

Sitting my final high school exam last year and after that attending many leadership conferences and workshops, made me realize the definition of a community. I owe my community a lot, so for that, bettering the status of the people living in my community rang a bell in my mind that; doing it was all the best I could.

One of what I value is being the true likeness of myself that is; words, actions and thoughts. The change that I want in Africa starts with the change in the mentality and attitude that we have towards Africa.

Highlights ofScholarsExperience

AnnuAl SCHOlARS DIRECTORY, 2014-2015 73

From the very beginning till date, mcf has helped me unleash my potential, though not fully yet. One of my major achievements is that I have established

an excellent method of relating to patients as a medical student and a would-be medical doctor, a skill lacking in some Cameroonian doctors. This I learned during my 4 week internship at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana.

Africa and the world need us, and we can’t fail them. There are many students who face much severe circumstances than I, so it’s always my priority during my return to my country to sensitize students, through conferences, interviews with our national TV and radio television, personal talks, and important informational sessions at the US Embassy, of the availability of scholarships, to help them pursue their dreams, as well as write to the Ministers of Education to plea that the role of guidance counselors be reinforced in schools.

I have mobilized students to get bicycles which could take them around campus, a method I believe helps them to do what they find passion in, regardless of the negative remarks of their peers.

As a scholar, i receive not only a comprehensive financial support, quality education, and relevant social support but most importantly a whole blend of

international exposures that prepares me towards fulfilling my responsibility as a global citizen.

The MCF experience humbles me with the opportunity to be engaged in a number of international interviews, participate in leadership conferences in and outside my home country. It has offered wonderful travelling experiences to the USA and transforming interactions and teamwork on projects with other scholars from across the world.

This maze of affiliations has presented me the right framework, resources, and prospects to be boldly positioned for transformational impact to our world.Truly, I am excited about the MCF call to exceed limit and to transform, to resurrect our continent, and to outlive the menace of human destruction for this generation and the next.

“Education is not preparation for life. Education is life itself.”

I believe in holistic education; to learn from every opportunity in order to meet the challenges of living as well as academics. When I observe awesome structures designed and constructed by civil engineers, I am filled with the desire to be part of this great profile system of creativity and ingenuity.

Every summer, I volunteer with a non-governmental organization called Volunteer Partnerships for West Africa (VPWA) to teach kids in the rural parts of Ghana how to read as well as use the computer to type. I am currently the general secretary for the Civil Engineering Students’ Association (CESA).

“To whom much is given, much more is expected.”

This opportunity at KNUST will yield significant progress for the African Continent.

I believe!

My stay to this community that has always reminded me of my commitment to lead change in any way I can.

I visited the community with two friends. We committed to staying in both communities for 3 days to appreciate how life in the community is like and think of how best we can help.

I realized a general low academic performance during my stay and interaction with community stakeholders. The Assin North Municipal’s report on academic performance also revealed a similar phenomenon. This gave me a speculative cause of the problem, since I have had the privilege of attending both a rural and urban schools. The huge disparity in academic performance between the two, as I had hypothesized, is how the latter encourages its students to read.

After studying to confirm my conjecture, I initiated the “Help Me Read” Project.

The project seeks to provide educational materials, particularly reading materials, to basic schools in rural communities in the Assin North Municipality. A team is also dispatched into target communities to teach and encourage students to read within a period not less than a week.

In May 2015, the project was first piloted in Assin Asempaneye, another village in the Municipality. With our own drafted story books, my classmates and I supported the students of the Assin Asempaneye R/C primary in basic reading skills through various activities such as reading games, classroom learning etc. The results were above our expectations! We discovered a lot of smart kids who could easily understand what was being taught but their command over the English Language had being the reason to their academic progress.

The project will be officially launched in February 2016 and we hope to widen the scope to reach out to more schools in more communities.

Our journey remains forward.

The series of seminars organized by the Scholars Program at

KNUST rekindled a latent passion to change self, community and country.

In December 2014, the Scholars were given the opportunity to visit deprived communities to report on them. My endeavor took me into two communities; Pewodee and Assin Dompim, all in the Assin North Municipality. The Pewodee community is a very deprived one with no electricity, no public facility (toilet, clinic etc.) and it is difficult getting to the nearest town with such facilities due to the terrible nature of the access road.
