Reading Comprehension & Summary Making

Read the following passage, then answer the questions below.

For many people who live in cities, parks are an important part of the landscape. They provide a place for people to relax and play sports, as well as a refuge from theoften harsh environment of a city. What people often overlook is that parks alsoprovide considerable environmental benefits.

One benefit of parks is that plants absorb carbon dioxide—a key pollutant—andemit oxygen, which humans need to breathe. Parks also make cities cooler. Scientistshave long noted that building materials such as metal, concrete, and asphalt absorbmuch more of the sun’s heat and release it much more quickly than organic surfaceslike trees and grass. Because city landscapes contain so much of these buildingmaterials, cities are usually warmer than surrounding rural areas.

Unfortunately, many cities cannot easily create more parks because most land isalready being used for buildings, roads, parking lots, and other essential parts of theurban environment. However, cities could benefit from many of the positive effects ofparks by encouraging citizens to create another advantageous type of green space:rooftop gardens. Some rooftop gardens are very complex and require complicatedengineering, but others are simple container gardens that anyone can create with theinvestment of a few hundred dollars and a few hours of work.

Rooftop gardens provide many of the same benefits as other urban park andgarden spaces, but without taking up the much-needed land. Like parks, rooftopgardens help to replace carbon dioxide in the air with nourishing oxygen. They alsohelp to lessen the Urban Heat Island Effect, which can save people money. In thesummer, rooftop gardens prevent buildings from absorbing heat from the sun, whichcan significantly reduce cooling bills. In the winter, gardens help hold in the heat thatmaterials like brick and concrete radiate so quickly, leading to savings on heating bills.Rooftop vegetable and herb gardens can also provide fresh food for city dwellers, saving them money and making their diets healthier. Rooftop gardens are not onlysomething everyone can enjoy, they are also a smart environmental investment.

Reading Comprehension& Summary Making

“Wake up!” Do you hear these words often? If so, maybe you are not getting enough sleep. There are two kinds of sleep in mammals and birds. One kind of sleep is Rapid Eye

Movement sleep, which we call REM sleep. The other kind of sleep is Non–Rapid EyeMovement sleep, which we call NREM or non–REM sleep.During REM sleep, people and animals are paralyzed. Scientists think people enter a state inwhich they cannot move so they will not hurt themselves while they are dreaming. The National Sleep Foundation in the United States says that 7–9 hours of sleep daily is bestfor an adult. Seven to nine hours of sleep is good for memory, alertness, problem–solving, and health. Less than six hours of sleep affects the ability to think. Getting too much sleepmay not be good for people either. Too much sleep is linked to sickness and depression.

Babies need a lot more sleep than adults. A newborn infant needs up to 18 hours ofsleep each day. Five–year–olds need 11–13 hours of sleep each day. Teenagers need 9–10hours of sleep each day. Pregnant women need more sleep than other adults. Many peoplethink that elderly people need less sleep than younger adults, but that is not true. Most adultsdo well with 7–9 hours of sleep.

Scientists are not sure of all the reasons for sleep. They know that sleep helps the bodyheal and grow. Sleep helps the immune system – which helps people fight disease. Sleephelps the infant brain grow. It seems that REM sleep is especially important for babies’ braingrowth. It also seems that sleep is a time for processing memories.

Sleep patterns differ substantially from culture to culture. Cultures with artificial lighthave different sleep patterns from cultures without artificial light (like electric lamps.) Incultures that use artificial light, people usually go to sleep later at night, and they sleepthrough the night. In other cultures, people often sleep for two periods. They go to sleepshortly after the sun goes down. They sleep deeply for several hours. Then, they tend to wakeup for several hours. Afterward, they go to sleep again for several more hours. In hunter–gatherer groups, people sleep off and on throughout the day and night.

VI – Reading Comprehension &Summary Making (40 Marks)

Read the following passage carefully, then answer the questions below: ( 30 m.)

It was one of those terribly hot days in Baltimore. We always had those for about a

month between July and August. That day in particular was hotter than I could remember it

being. The weatherman on the radio said the temperature would reach 104°!

Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also scorching in

our apartment. This was 1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner till ten

years later. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find some place cooler. I

suggested the drug store, because I wanted to get a soda or malt. But he reminded me that

the drug store would not let you sit there all day. My brother instead suggested we could see

a movie. It was a brilliant plan.

Movie theaters were one of the few places you could sit for long and, most important,

sit in air conditioning. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through both movies of

a double feature. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again after that. If you

wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager at

our theater, Mr. Bellow, did not mind if you did. That particular day, my brother and I sat

through both movies twice, trying to escape the heat. We sat and watched The Music Man

followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. We’d already seen the second movie once

before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr. Bellow loved anything with

John Wayne in it. Watching it again was better than going outside, and at least The Music

Man was new to us. We left the theater around 8 PM, just before the evening shows began.

But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it

wave of 1962.

II- Reading Comprehension ( 100 Marks )

-Read the following passage, then answer the questions below:Electronic books, or e-books, are a relatively new development, and are far from

realizing their vast potential for changing the way people read. An e-book is a book-lengthpublication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, and produced on, publishedthrough, and readable on computers or other electronic devices.

So now you know what an e-book is. But you still may be wondering why they putprinted books to shame. E-books are superior to printed books because they save space. Theaverage e-reader can store thousands of digital books, providing a veritable library at yourfingertips. It is easy to hold and can fit in a pocketbook or briefcase easily. Perhaps the onlydrawback to the space-saving aspect of an e-reader is that it requires you to find new thingsto put on your shelves. In addition, E- books make it easier to share this information withfamily members and co-workers. Moreover, they are environmentally friendly. Since e-books use no trees, they represent a significant amount of preservation in terms of theenvironment and its resources. They provide helpful reading tips and tools that printed booksdo not. The typical e-book allows its user to customize letter size, font, and line spacing. Italso allows highlighting and electronic bookmarking. Finally, eBooks are more easilyupdated and upgraded. Books on many subjects can become dated very quickly. eBooks canbe easily and quickly kept up to date.

While e-books have some distinct advantages, they also have some drawbacks. Whenreading on paper, light reflects off the page and into your eyes naturally, however, withcomputer screens, the device projects light into your eyes, causing headaches and possiblelong term damage to your eyesight. E-books are just another file on a hard drive, and theyoften depend on the Internet to transfer from one location to another. A virus may invadeyour computer or you might accidentally damage your e-reader or hard drive. Without abackup of your files, you could lose your entire book collection in one fell swoop. As withother media that has moved to digital distribution, e-books are often pirated.

Writers work hard to create their art, and they deserve to be fairly compensated for theireffort. The prevalence of e-books increases the chance that their work will be stolen online orthat they won't earn what they deserve. E-Book readers are special devices or programs on acomputer that allow the user to access the book electronically. There is absolutely no paperinvolved. If there is a power outage and the batteries die the user will not be able to accessthe book.
