UDC utilizes a variety of basic and special
method non-destructive examination (NDE)
techniques to determine material integrity and
to perform condition assessments of boiler
components and auxiliary boiler equipment.
All Field Services Representatives receive NDE
training and are certified in accordance with
ASNT SNT-TC-1A and ANSI/ASNT CP-189.

United Dynamics AT Corporation offers
Nondestructive Examination, (NDE)
techniques which are essential for the safety, reliability, and improved availability for allboilers.
UDC Field Service NDE Specialists are alltrained and certified for the equipment andmaterials used to properly perform NDEinspections, utilizing procedures written inaccordance with nationally recognized codesand standards.
All of UDC Field Service Representatives are
trained and certified in the basic NDEmethods, Visual, Magnetic Particle, LiquidPenetrant, Ultrasonic Thickness as well asother specialty NDE techniques required forboiler component assessments.
All UDC Field Service Representatives aretrained and certified in the proper set-up,calibration, and operational techniquesrequired when using an A-scan display to
perform ultrasonic thickness examinationsand piping FAC inspections.
Video Probe inspections are commonly used toview the internals of boiler components. Headerligament cracking, (photo above), and tubestress corrosion cracking are but a few of themany problems which can be detected.Field replications, (above left), are an essentialportion of a component assessment. Creepcracking, (right), can be detected at a micro-
scopic level, enabling component replacementplanning well in advance of the need.
Oxide thickness testing is another specializedUltrasonic Testing, (UT), method used to calcu-late the remaining useful life of boiler tubingcomponents. By measuring the thickness of theinternal oxide scale and the tube wall thickness,
calculations can be performed to accuratelydetermine the future time for replacement, enabling replacement planning well in advance.
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing, (PAUT), is oneof the latest developments being utilized in thepower generation industry today. Weld inspec-tion, defect detection and sizing are just a fewof the applications of this new technology.
Benefits of phased array technology include itsability to use multiple elements with a singletransducer assembly, shortening the timerequired for examinations, thus reducing cost, and maximizing the probability of detection ofdiscontinuities.
The small footprint of the transducer and itsability to sweep the beam without moving theprobe lends aid to inspection of componentswhere the access for mechanical scanning islimited.
The NDE technician is the most important
aspect of employing any type of NDE inspectionand is critical with the application of phasedarray inspection. This new technology requiresa well trained and proven skill level for theinspection.
Each UDC NDE Field Specialists are trained, tested, and certified to perform the technologyutilized for any given NDE inspection servicesolution offered.
Just one more reason clients demanding thehighest quality available in NDE inspectionservices choose UDC!
