The small bus stop in my village was busywith people and overloaded buses. On theground were even more things to load.Touts were shouting the names wheretheir buses were going.

“Đi về thành phố! Đi về thành phố! Đi vềphía Tây!” Tôi nghe tiếng gọi từ chiếc xebuýt tôi cần đi.

“City! City! Going west!” I heard a toutshouting. That was the bus I needed tocatch.

The city bus was almost full, but morepeople were still pushing to get on. Somepacked their luggage under the bus.Others put theirs on the racks inside.

New passengers clutched their tickets asthey looked for somewhere to sit in thecrowded bus. Women with young childrenmade them comfortable for the longjourney.

I squeezed in next to a window. Theperson sitting next to me was holdingtightly to a green plastic bag. He wore oldsandals, a worn out coat, and he lookednervous.

I looked outside the bus and realised thatI was leaving my village, the place where Ihad grown up. I was going to the big city.

The loading was completed and allpassengers were seated. Hawkers stillpushed their way into the bus to sell theirgoods to the passengers. Everyone wasshouting the names of what was availablefor sale. The words sounded funny to me.

A few passengers bought drinks, othersbought small snacks and began to chew.Those who did not have any money, likeme, just watched.

These activities were interrupted by thehooting of the bus, a sign that we wereready to leave. The tout yelled at thehawkers to get out.

Hawkers pushed each other to make theirway out of the bus. Some gave backchange to the travellers. Others made lastminute attempts to sell more items.

As the bus left the bus stop, I stared out ofthe window. I wondered if I would ever goback to my village again.

As the journey progressed, the inside ofthe bus got very hot. I closed my eyeshoping to sleep.

But my mind drifted back home. Will mymother be safe? Will my rabbits fetch anymoney? Will my brother remember towater my tree seedlings?

On the way, I memorised the name of theplace where my uncle lived in the big city. Iwas still mumbling it when I fell asleep.

Nine hours later, I woke up with loudbanging and calling for passengers goingback to my village. I grabbed my small bagand jumped out of the bus.

The return bus was filling up quickly. Soonit would make its way back east. The mostimportant thing for me now, was to startlooking for my uncle’s house.
