  • Hokkaido Dog

    PHOTO / ALISTER BUCKINGHAM

The Hokkaido Dog, one of the native Japanese breeds, has lived closely with the indigenous people of Hokkaido, the Ainu, for generations.

Called the Ainu Dog until 1937, the iconic breed was eventually designated as a National Protected Species, and the name was changed

to Hokkaido Dog by the Ministry of Education.

The exact origins are unknown, but its ancestors are believed to be the Matagi (hunting) dogs, brought from the Tohoku region by the ancient Japanese during the Jomon period, approximately 16,500 - 3,000 years ago.

Many of the native Japanese dogs that existed within the island of Honshu were mixed with non-native breeds during the Yayoi period, but the geographical separation from mainland Japan allowed the Hokkaido Dog to more easily remain near-purebred, similar to the Okinawa breed known as the Ryukyu Dog.

The Hokkaido Dog has played a huge role in the Ainu peoples lives as loyal and hardworking hunting assistants, often serving as the protectors of their owners and families from threats such as Hokkaido wolves. They were called Seta by the Ainu people, and treated as beloved family members who helped each other get through the cold, harsh winter.

Despite using primitive hunting tools like handmade bows and pikes, the Ainu people hunted fierce brown bears and fleet-footed Ezo deer, where the Hokkaid.Dogs endurance and agility were of great benefit.

The Hokkaido Dog is a medium-sized breedslightly larger than the Shiba Dogusually weighing around 20kg for males and 15kg for females. Their barrel-chested bodies and solid bones make them perfect for hunting in the rugged mountains, and their thick double coats were ideally suited for the colder Hokkaido climates.

Unlike the white-hued Hokkaido dog featured in the television commercial of a particular Japanese mobile phone carrier, 70% of them have red or brown hair, whereas only 20% have white coats.

Although they seem to have a reputation for being quick-tempered and disobedient, they can be nave, playful, and submissive.

My family dog is a Hokkaido dog, and can be somewhat moody, but stays healthy. She is protective, gets along well with kids, and has become an important member of the family.

Nowadays, it is very rare for the Hokkaido Dog to be a hunting companion, and they are usually only seen in competitions at dog shows, or as house pets. The number of Hokkaido dogs has decreased drastically, and there are reportedly a mere 2,000 pure bred animals remaining in Japan.

During the spring, the annual dog show is held in Kutchan, hosting approximately 100 Hokkaido Dogs that travel there from all over Japan. A fantastic event for dog lovers to get to meet the gorgeous and increasingly rare Hokkaido native breed and their precious little puppies.

Its not a competition, but it is one of the most competitive events in snowsports.

Interski is a gathering of the most elite skiers, boarders, nordic skiers and telemarkers from over 36 nations to share ideas on technique, teaching methods and coaching models. The purpose of this

is to evolve snowsports at every level of the sport from the first time ski lesson experience to the development and training of world cup athletes. It is almost certain that if you have ever had a lesson, received a tip from a friend, or tried to emulate a pro, that this technique was discussed and tested at an Interski congress at some point. Each country sends their top demonstrators, athletes and professionals from each discipline. So when I say its competitive, each country is there to prove to the world that they are leading the charge in the evolution of the snowsports industry.

Interski is held in a different location every four years. The most recent was held in September, 2015 in the resort of Cerro Castor, Ushuaia, Argentina. Also known as the end of the world for being the southernmost point of land on the planet, Argentina made history for being the first country to host the Interski congress in the Southern Hemisphere.

During the day, each country led on-snow workshops to present their latest ideas on technique and teaching methodology. Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Korea and Canada were among the standout countries with regards to their technical precision and demonstrations. These countries displayed an incredibly high level of ski performance and the energy created through turning was inspirational to observe. There were also some very interesting and controversial ideas on technique. As per usual, some countries were very aligned on what they

believed to be efficient technique while other countries were polar opposites. An example of this could be the up and forward or extension style of turn transition being taught in some of the European countries compared to the compact flex to release style of turn transition on display by some of the Australasian and North American countries.

The afternoon keynote lectures allowed countries to bring forward some of their latest research, technology, philosophies and statistics for the world to discuss. A few examples of some of the keynote lectures included: the latest research on Neurokinetics and its application to developing snowsports technique in Canada; Italy presented their latest philosophy on teaching children; San Marino presented new technology that allows instructors to communicate with students while skiing; Spain presented their revolution of carving with focus on knee injury prevention and Finland presented their latest studies on skill acquisition and motivation in snowports. Australia presented new downloadable APP software that we have been developing for instructors which provides over 400 progression and consolidation exercises for specific issues that arise when teaching skiing. This includes technical descriptions and video explanations for instructors to draw from once they have assessed a students skills on the hill.

It is now the job of each national team from around the world to analyzes the information learned from other countries at Interski. As a member of the Australian National Team, I will work with the other team members and the Australian Technical Committee to determine what will be most beneficial to evolve the Australian Professional Snowsports Instructor Organization (APSI) and improve the training of Australian snowsports instructors. These new concepts will be implemented through instructor training courses and national instructor exams to ultimately enhance the quality of lessons and enjoyment of skiing in Australia and around the world.

All-in-all, Interski was an inspiring experience and is continuing to evolve the snowsports industry even after 65 years of Interski Congresses. The next Interski Congress will be held in Pomporova, Bulgaria in 2019. For more information on Interski and to see some of the world class skiing/riding on display, visit youtube and type in Interski 2015.

SKI INJURIES & RETURNING TO THE HILLWITH BEVAN COLLESS FROM NISEKO PHYSIO

One of the most common questions we get is: What types of injuries are the most common, so I thought Id outline a list of the injuries we see in a descending

order of frequency. And from the patients who are consulting us for these injuries the most common question is: Can I ski/board again on my holiday? So I added a score on how likely that they can return to skiing in the short term.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the main stabilizing ligaments inside the knee. It is known as an all-or-nothing rupture, partial tears are very rare.

Only very advanced skiers with a top of the line brace can ski again on their holiday.

    ACL Ruptures

    210

The medial co-lateral ligament (MCL) is a ligament on this inside of the knee that is often injured in falls involving a twist in the knee. It does not require an operation and is treated with bracing.

For low-grade tears, confident skiers can return to skiing within a few days.

    MCL Tears

    610

A very common injury with middle aged male skiers. Falling over the tips of the skis is often the cause.

Fortunately it is the gastrocnemius that tears, and provided knees are kept bent, most can return to skiing in 3 days.

    Calf Muscle Strains

    810

Skiers thumb is a tear to the inside ligament of the thumb. It is commonly injured during a fall when the thumb is driven into the snow.

Most people can continue skiing with an appropriate brace.

These can happen in a range of bones in the wrist, and at greatest risk are to beginner snowboarders falling on an out-stretched hand. If the wrist is very painful after a fall its best to assume there is a fracture as soft tissue injuries are quite rare.

If a fracture is confirmed on x-ray, a subsequent fall is likely to exacerbate the injury.
