“Eskom lied to us” – Earthlife AfricaThere is a fine line between economic development of a country and the manage-ment and protection of the environment in proximity to super critical entities such as coal-fired power stations.

Earthlife Africa drew the line on Monday when it accused Eskom and the World Bank of bailing out on material conditions under which the Bank lent 3.75 billion dollars to Eskom to build the Medupi power station.

Two of the conditions being that Medupi would install Flu-gas Desulfurization (FGD) – a mechanism that controls emissions - and that Eskom would meet South Africa’s air quality emissions standards and legis-lation. Compliance with these conditions would ensure a much cleaner power station and a cleaner environment for the people of Lephalale.

“Eskom has over the past three months been seeking to exempt itself from South African air quality regulations for most of its fleet of coal-fired power stations and is de-laying FGD at Medupi for several years. The primary reason Eskom gives is that obeying South Africa’s environmental regulations will be too costly,” the statement added.

Tristen Taylor, Earthlife Africa Project Coordinator, believes that Eskom is seeking ways to negate their promises to the local community. “Neither The World Bank nor Eskom seem to be particularly concerned about the health impacts of Medupi being exempted from air quality standards or from FGD being so delayed that the likelihood of it ever being installed enters the realm of miracles. This violates the contract the Bank and Eskom made with the people of Lephalale: they promised to prevent dan-gerous and possibly lethal pollution, but now prefer excessive profits instead. In ef-fect, The World Bank and Eskom lied to us all.”

In reaction Eskom confirmed on Wednesday that it has applied for the post-ponement of and exemption from the Min-imum Emissions Standards for its coal and liquid fuel-fired power stations, stating how-ever that it remains committed to deliver power to South Africans in an environmen-tally responsible manner. “Eskom’s plans to retrofit Medupi Power Station with FGD six years after each unit has been commis-sioned remain unchanged and do not differ from the original environmental approval.

“The delay in the retrofitting of the FGD referred to by Earthlife Africa is aligned with the delay in the commissioning of the generating units at Medupi. Since the FGD will only be retrofitted after the National Emission Standards come into place in April 2015, Eskom has to apply for a post-ponement of the compliance time frame for the national sulphur dioxide emissions stan-dards for Medupi Power Station.”

When it comes to compliance with the emission standards the parastatal plans to “retrofit the highest emitting stations emis-sion reduction technology first. For this reason Eskom has to apply for a postpone-ment of the emission standard compliance time frames in some cases, and an exemp-tion from the emission standard in other cases when it will not be possible to retrofit the power stations before they are decom-missioned. Eskom’s postponement and exemption application will follow the pro-cesses and procedures that are provided for in the relevant legislation.”

Residents of Mokopane can now have pre-paid water meters installed at their homes. Justice Mukweuho told delegates at last week’s busi-ness chamber meeting that these metres have already been installed in RDP extensions 14 and 19.

Mukweuho said people can top up their water tokens at selected outlets and recharge their metres by simply touching the token to it.

The metres are calibrated to the municipal rates system, so the first free litres will remain free and the usage-sliding scale will apply just as it does with normally metered water.

“But you don’t waste any time or money rectifying incorrect water bills,” Mukweuho explained.

He added that the metres are a great water saving tool. No water metres were ever installed in Extension 14.

Prior to the installation of pre-paid metres there, consumption for the area was about 11 mega litres per month, but since installing the metres, consumption has been reduced to less than three mega litres per month.

One of the advantages these metres hold for homeowners is that it cuts off once the money loaded runs out. A burst water pipe can thus only cause so much financial damage. Metres can also be locked when homeowners go away on holiday.

The cost of having a pre-paid water meter installed is about R2600 and it comes with a one-year guarantee.

‘n Port a cath is verlede week by hom ingeplant wat amper soos ‘n permanente drip, chemoterapie toedien.

Pre-paid water now in Mokopane

Justice Mukweuho and Imanuel Mutsila demonstrated the new pre-paid water meters now available to Mokopane residents.

Vosloo is aangekla nadat ‘n voortvlugtige veedief in 2012 tydens ‘n polisie operasie ge-wond is in ‘n skietery.

Spoorsnyer pleit onskuldigTydens ‘n vorige hofverskyning is gelas

To change your results in life and in busi-ness, you need to change the way you look at yourself and life in general. This was the message from motivational speaker, John Broome, when he addressed delegates at Mokopane Business Chamber’s monthly members meeting at The Honeyball last Thursday.

Broome related how the subconscious image we have of ourselves determines the way we do business. He illustrated his point by citing the number of lotto winners world-wide, who end up back where they were financially in less than three years after winning.

“But if you take away all Richard Bran-son’s money and dump him in the middle of war-torn Afghanistan with only the clothes on his back, he will be a billionaire within five years. It is simply because he sees him-self as wealthy and thinks on a scale most of us cannot even imagine,” Broome said.

Broome told delegates he records a va-riety of CD’s which conveys subliminal mes-sages which change the way people think about life and themselves on a subconscious level. After his presentation people had the opportunity to buy CD’s.

‘Fix your business mind,’ says expert

Boikarabelo Coal Mine is stepping up its construction activities over the next two months. Stage one of the large-scale open pit mine is planned to produce six million tons of coal per year over 30 years while providing much-needed employment and development in the region. It is envisaged that initial construction will take around two years to complete.

The mine is situated 15km north of Steenbokpan in Limpopo.

The next construction phases to be under-taken include earth works to enable the establishment of roads, accommodation, offices and the railway lines. Other key activities include the installation of water and power infrastructure as well as setting up site security. Basic offices and initial roads were established in February this year while on-going environmental monitoring has been in place for quite some time.

Physical infrastructure is only one aspect of the mine development; other important components are human resources and community involvement. ‘Boikarabelo’ means to be responsible and Ledjadja, the BEE owner and operator, intends to live up to this name as well as developing a strong relationship with the community in which it will operate.

The first round of community meetings were successfully held in March 2013, while the second round of meetings will take place in the 3rd quarter of 2013. This will see the establishment of the Boikarabelo Executive Community, a body which will facilitate feed-back to the community through nominated representatives.

Interested parties should watch the local papers for progress and upcoming meet-ings. Boikarabelo has taken part in several Lephalale Development Forum meetings and has held meetings with the Lephalale Local Municipality and the municipal manager, to advise them of plans and give feedback on commitments in terms of the Mining Charter.

With plans to employ approximately 700 people when fully operational, Human Resources Operational Readiness Offices were opened in town. Over 12,000 local resumes have been collected in order to conduct a

Boikarabelo Mine construction update

skills study and establish a skills database. The company has started trainee sponsor-ships for six learners and has awarded five bursaries to university students as well as having started a local skills programme.

Supporting local businesses isalso key, and to this end an SMME database has been developed with over 90 local compa-nies registering their interest. This database will be used to encourage contractors to use local companies and develop skills.

The Waterberg coalfield contains 40% of South African’s remaining coal resources. South Africa is expected to consume 269 million tonnes of coal per annum by 2018 to meet its growing energy requirements. With supplies from coal fields in Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal declining, the coal from this region will greatly assist South Africa in meeting its energy and development targets.

For more information about the project and the company developing the mine please visit: www.resgen.com.au

The new Boikarabelo Mine logo was designed by two local learners who scooped first prize for their drawings and were granted scholarships as prizes. This competition was made possible by assistance from the Department of Education and the Lephalale Mayor’s office.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mogalakwena celebrated Heritage Day with the community of Ndebele - Mate-beleng village in ward 12. Entertainment for the day included traditional dancers, a soccer challenge, a chess challenge and the youth addressing the commu-nity on a number of themes including: “honour your past, own your future” and “how to build one nation with one future through embracing our diversity.”

Being appreciated by others is a great feeling. It means that you have done something right and being recognised for it. Johannes Matlou is the proud store manager of Boxer in Ellisras and has been involved with his community and shoppers since his store first opened its doors five years ago.

Johannes and his team have become their community champions and have developed long lasting re-lationships with their shoppers. Helping their community is high on their list of priorities and they were recently pleas-antly surprised by some of their thankful shop-pers.

Around 20 gogo’s (gran-nies) from the Ga-Seleka com-munity arrived at Boxer Ellisras and showed their apprecia-tion by singing a song called

In Lephalale was daar tot ‘n verskeidenheid konstruksievoertuie! Menige uitrustings

ANA’s sal wys hoe leerders vaar

Veral Brahmane. So laai ek een middag 'n vrag stoet Brahmane.

Ek is al amper deur Pottiesdorp toe hoor ek 'n sirene hier agter my.

Dit was so ‘n jong mannetjie gewees.

'n Hospitaal sien my nie so maklik nie.

so lekker fris tak van 'n kameeldoring wat so ent weg staan.
