Dit is Kerstyd, ‘n tyd wanneer ons onthou van ons bevryding, ‘n tyd van oorbegin op ‘n skoon bladsy, ‘n tyd vir stilstaan en besin oor alles wat ons het om voor dankbaar te wees.

Ek het my kinders hierdie jaar gevra om ly-sies te maak van al die speelgoed wat hulle het, in stede daarvan om lysies te maak van wat hulle wil hê vir Kersfees. ‘Net ingeval Kersvader dalk vir hulle iets wil gee wat hulle reeds het.’

Dít het die outjies gedwing om deur hul kaste, laaie en rakkies te gaan en te besin oor hoe baie hulle het en het die Kersfees wenslysies wat hulle later vir my gebring het aansienlik verkort vergeleke met vorige jare. Al wat dit gekos het was om hulle dolle vaart na nuuter en beter ‘n bietjie te rem en hulle te laat besef wat hulle reeds het.

Ons almal is partykeer so besig om agter allerhande goed aan te hardloop: nuwe

besigheidsgeleenthede, eiendomme, mo-tors, die nuutste en beste tegnologie, status en loopbaan mylpale, dat ons nooit tyd maak om dit wat ons reeds het en tot ons beskik-king is te geniet nie - die kosbaarste hiervan - mekaar.

Ons het dus besluit om hierdie bylae te fokus op ‘n paar dinge wat ‘n mens eintlik meer gereeld behoort te doen, maar waarvoor ons nooit tyd kry of maak nie.

Dit is ons by Noordelike Nuus se hoop dat elkeen van ons lesers, hul vriende en families hierdie Kersgety in liefde en vrede sal deur-bring en tyd sal hê om minstens ‘n paar van ons vakansievoorstelle op die proef te stel.

So lank as ek wat kan onthou was daar altyd Kerstyd soetkoekies in my ouma se huis. Om die waarheid te sê, ek het gedink mens noem dit Kersfees koekies.

My ma het ook elke jaar ‘n klomp van hierdie heerlike, dog eenvoudige, koekies gebak. Sy het hulle effe dunner uitgerol as Ouma en die koekies by ons huis was gevolglik ‘n bietjie bruiner gebak en meer bros.

Ons het gewoonlik net voor Kersnaweek ons jaarlikse pelgrimstog Johannesburg toe aangepak. Want sien, Ouma het in Johannesburg gebly en Kersfees is elke jaar by haar huis gevier. Dit was maar net so.

Die oorblywende een of twee koekblikke van Ma se baksel is dan saamgeneem en het saam met Ouma s’n in die groot glas seekoei op geëin-dig. Hiérdie koekie houer het ‘n glasdeksel gehad wat geen kind op aarde kon oplig sonder om dit soos ‘n kerkklok deur die huis te laat weergalm nie.

Om die waarheid te sê, kinders mag nie aan dié houer geraak het nie. Teetyd is daar ‘n bordjie koekies op die koffietafel in die voorhuis neergesit en ons kinders het dan sommer daar op die mat by die tafeltjie gesit en koekies inryg. Die Raatse was nog altyd ‘n klomp koffie pense, en niks op hierdie aarde gaan so lekker saam met koffie soos die twee of drie soetkoekies wat Ma ons saam met ons koffie toegelaat het nie.

Soos alle goeie oumas het my Ouma darem altyd gekyk dat ek ‘n ekstra paar koekies inkry, al sou dit glo my tande laat vrot en maak dat ek nie later my kos eet nie.

Bak koekiesVir my was hierdie koekies elke jaar die

grootste Kersgeskenk. Ek kan hulle nou nog proe en ruik as ek net aan Kersfees in Ouma se huis dink.

Maar die engele het Ouma lankal kom haal en Ma sê sy het haar deel gedoen. My liewe vrou bak elke jaar emmers vol koekies vir die Kers-gety, maar sit haar voet neer as dit by Ouma se soetkoekies kom. Dis glo “nét suiker”.

Gelukkig het my ou Skoonsus, een van Ouma se laaste Kerstye saam met ons, die resep by haar gekry. So elke nou en dan, dan verras sy ons met ‘n blik van Ouma se soetkoekies oor Kersfees.

Ek het haar gebel en die resep gekry om met ons lesers te deel:

Ouma se Soetkoekies10 koppies koekmeel

4 koppies suiker500 g margarien of sagte botter

6 eiers10 teelepels bakpoeier

knippie sout½ koppie lou water

Voorverhit oond tot 180 ° C. Sif alle droë bestanddele saam.

Klits botter en suiker vir ongeveer 10 minute tot room en voeg eier een vir een by,

klits goed. Voeg droë bestanddele by die suiker, margarien en eier mengsel. As deeg te styf is voeg 'n ¼ - ½ koppie lou water by en meng deur. Laat deeg vir ongeveer 1 uur staan.

Rol uit op meel-bestrooide oppervlakte en druk vormpies uit. Plaas in gesmeerde bakplate.

Bak vir 10 minute of tot ligbruin.

Geseënde Kersfees


Hier is ‘n vinnige, basiese resep wat jy kan kan aanpas om jou koekblikke vol te maak met ‘n klomp verskillende smaakvolle koekies wat die kinders en grootmense sal laat glimlag. Met dank aan www.wateetonsvanaand.co.za en Martha de Lange (gaan kuier gerus vir nog baie smullekker resepte).

Basiese koekieresep met 6 variasiesBasiese deeg:

250 g botter of sagte margerine150 g strooisuiker (180 ml)

1 ekstra groot eier 10 ml vanilla essence

450 g koekmeel (750 ml)

Voorverhit jou oond tot 160 ° C. Room die botter en strooisuiker saam totdat dit lig en

romerig is. Voeg die eier en vanilla by en meng goed deur. Sif die meel by vorm ‘n stywe deeg (nog meel kan bygevoeg word as die deeg te

sag voel).

VANILLA KOEKIES (30) Maak die basiese deeg. Roll deeg uit en druk

vormpies soos verlang. Plaas op ‘n bakplaat wat bespuit of gesmeer is (of op bakpapier) vir 15-20

minute tot goud in kleur.

SQUIGGLY HEARTS (30) Voorverhit jou oond tot 160 ° C. Roll deeg uit en druk hartjie vormpies. Plaas op ‘n bakplaat wat bespuit of gesmeer is (of op bakpapier) vir 15-20 minute tot goud in kleur. Terwyl die koekies

afkoel – kan melksjokolade en wit sjokolade

Bak koekiesgesmelt word in die mikrogolf vir 2 minute. Drup die sjokolade oor die hartjie vorm koekies. Los

sjokolade om hard te word.

SUURLEMOEN VINGERS (40) Voorverhit jou oond tot 180 ° C. Volg die basiese koekie deeg stappe, maar rasper die skil van 2 suurlemoene in saam met die botter en suiker

mengsel. Meng die deeg en deel in die helfte en rol uit in 2 reghoekie (omtrent 30cm x 20cm). Plaas elke reghoek op ‘n bakplaat en gebruik ‘n skerp mes om die deeg in 10cm x 2 cm ‘vingers’ te sny. Plaas in die yskas vir 30 minute voordat

Meng 140 g gesifte verskiersuiker met ge-noeg suurlemoensap om dit gemaklik te smeer. Smeer die versiekersuiker-mengsel oor die een helfte van die afgekoelde koekies en plaas opme-

kaar.Laat versiersuiker hard word.

ROSYNTJIE KOEKIES (30)Voeg 100g rosyntjies (of enige

ander gedroogde bessie) by die bas-iese koekie deeg resep wanneer jy die koekmeel inmeng. Vorm ‘n rol, maak toe met plastiek (cling wrap) en verkoel of vries. Om die koekies

te maak, sny in 5mm snytjies en bak teen 180°C vir 8 tot 10 minute.

CHOCOLATE CHIP (30)

Maak die basiese deeg. Plaas 100 g sjokolade

stukkies (choc chips) by die basiese deeg wan-neer jy die koekmeel inmeng. Vorm ‘n rol, maak toe met plastiek (cling wrap) en verkoel of vries. Om die koekies te maak, sny in 5mm snytjies

en bak teen 180°C vir 8 tot 10 minute.

NEUTKOEKIES (20)*Berei die basiese koekie deeg

voor, maar plaas 10 ml amandel ekstrak (almond essence) in plaas van vanilla. Vorm die deeg in ‘n

rol van 5cm en rol in fyngemaakte amandels. Maak toe met plastiek (cling wrap) en verkoel of vries. Om die koekies te maak, sny in

5mm snytjies en bak teen 180°C vir 10 tot 12 minute.

MEUSLIKOEKIES (20)*Maak die basiese deeg. Plaas

100 g van enige muesli (sommer ontbytpap mengsel) by die basiese deeg wan-

neer jy die koekmeel inmeng. Vorm ‘n rol, maak toe met plastiek (cling wrap) en verkoel of vries. Om die koekies te maak, sny in 5mm snytjies

en bak teen 180°C vir 8 tot 10 minute.

With government taxing all the fun out of the fine products of our large breweries in South Africa, more and more people are discover-ing the joys of brewing their own beer.

According to Brewcraft, a company that specialises in the supply of home brewing equipment and ingredients, homemade beers often taste better than most commercial brews on offer.

Depending on the method of beer brew-ing, you can spend an enjoyable hour or so a day making a batch of beer. There’s nothing quite like deciding on what sort of style you’re going to make, then buying your ingredients in an easy to make kit, and returning home to make a great brew.

With a bit of practice, you shouldn’t have any trouble giving some imported and bou-tique beers a real run for their money, not only in regards to taste, but how terrific it will look as well.

There are many myths about home beer brewing, and like most myths, they’re mostly not true at all. It is, for instance, not true that homebrew is stronger than normal beer. You can make homebrew as strong or as weak as you like - it all depends on how much sugar or malt you add. Two readings from a hydrom-eter (a low-cost necessity for brewing) as well as a simple calculation will give you a fairly accurate measure of the alcohol content.

So making refreshing light beer is just as easy as making regular-strength or extra-strength beer.

Make your own BeerIt is also not true that homebrews give

you killer hangovers. Dehydration and vi-tamin B deficiency are the main causes of hangovers. Yeast contains vitamin B and alcohol draws it out of the body, yet home-brew is bottle-conditioned and contains yeast sediment, so as you drink homebrew, you replenish vitamin B. Most commercial beer is filtered, which eradicates the vita-min B. As home brewing relies on bottle conditioning no preservatives are neces-sary, unlike most commercial beers, which are thus more likely to lead to a hangover on a drink for drink basis.

So stop worrying about old-wives tales and get brewing. To begin with, you need to get some brewing gear.

There is a huge range of very affordable good-quality brewing equipment available. Next, you need to select a specific type of beer to make and then get the ingredients in kit form.

Fundamentally, you need barley, hops, yeast and water. Who would have thought that just four ingredients could combine to produce such a fantastic beverage as beer. Sugar is extracted from the barley, hops are added for bitterness, then yeast goes to work and converts much of the sugars into alcohol.

All the beginner really needs to have is a beer kit, a fermenter, and some basic brewing tools. You can order this in a single box called the Copper tun Starter Brewery Kit. Follow the instructions and you might just be in time to

enjoy some of your own beer before you have to return to work in January. What a lovely Christmas present your own beer would make to yourself!

The year 2003 marked the birth of one of the best FET Colleges in Limpopo and in the country as a whole. It was when two colleges, namely Potgietersrus Technical College and Lebowakgomo Commercial College, merged to see the formation of the Waterberg FET College in 2003.

The process of merging the two into one began in 2002. This was done by the Department of Education to increase the size of learner numbers and to ensure efficient use of scarce resources. This merging dates back to 2003 and was officially declared by the MEC for Education as a national requirement for Further Education and Training which resulted with the College as one of the 50 FET Colleges in the Country. Mr SP Mailula was the first appointed principal of the College. In 2004 the College only had three training sites and one Central Office. The College launched its VPN (virtual private network) which allowed the Central Office to link with its campuses in 2005. At that time, the College had enrolled 1595 learners and seeing the need for our students to be informed about the College affairs, a student semester newspaper was introduced the same year. The slogan “OUR DEEDS SPEAK” and the logo which were developed in 2003 were subsequently revised in 2006, to “Together Ensuring Suc-cess” with the following vision, mission and values.

The College had three campuses and two training sites. In 2008 the College launched its first website. The College entered into a partnership with USSA which helped to strengthen the institutional capacity in Student Support Services programmes in the year 2009. When the country welcomed visitors that came to our shores to witness the biggest soccer event in the world, Waterberg also joined in making sure that as a nation we are behind our national team. In 2012 the College participated in the Chamber of Business competitions where the College received an accolade of being the neatest business development in Mokopane and the College also scooped an award on Provincial level (Limpopo Province) for outstanding achievement in the category: Productivity improvement in the public sector during the Province Productivity Awards.

COLLEgE PASS RAtE The Department of Higher Education and Training presented the 2012 National Examinations Provisional Report, on Friday May 2013 at the Tshwane South FET College. It was reported that Waterberg FET College had the highest overall retention rate of 87% as opposed to the provincial average of 72%. The College also managed to obtain the highest certification rate of 55% as compared to the provincial average of 37%. Despite the fact that the College is ranked fourth in the province in terms of National Certificate Vocational enrolments, but the College managed to produce the highest number of level 4 graduates.


TEN YEARS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCEAT WATERbERg FET COLLEgE

The National Certificate Vocational (NCV) offers programmes of study in a variety of vocational fields. The programmes are intended to directly respond to the priority skills demands of the South African economy. The National Certificate Vocational is offered at levels 2, 3 and 4 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and is designed to provide both theory and practical experience in a particular vocational field. Water-berg FET College is the more consistent performer across all three levels. During the 2013 graduation ceremony, the College awarded twelve students with the CEO awards, for doing well in their respective academic achievements. This is done to encourage better performance. Ms MoyoPhumzile managed to scoop herself once again the best overall student of the year award. This success attests to the College’s vision which is “The Leader in the provision of quality learning and marketable skills”.

NEw COLLEgE CAMPUS IN thAbAzIMbI The Minister of Higher Education in his budget speech in April 2012 mentioned the expansion of Colleges. Waterberg FET College was requested to open a New Campus in Thabazimbi.

COLLEgE PLACEMENtSWaterberg FET College is proud to have taken part in producing seamless leaders that are determined to make a difference in their lives and of those in their immediate vicinity. Such are Mr Moses Selekela a Food Preparations & Culinary Arts graduate and Mr Daniel Masenya a Tourism graduate. These graduates hail from the dusty streets of Seshego and Bakenberg, townships bedevilled by poverty.They didn’t want to be just a number but wanted to stand out from the crowd.Through their hard work and guidance from the dedicated Waterberg FET College lectures, both students will be receiving on the job training in their respective career paths. Where Mr Moses Seleka will be working for the Ritz Carlton Naples in Florida,USA.

CENtRAL OffICE bUILdINg Waterberg FET College’s new central office is nearing completion, the

building will be handed over to the College before the end of 2013. “Everything is going well as per plan and we are looking forward to occupying our new home” said Mrs F Pienaar, the Council’s secretariat. The new offices will provide a congenial atmosphere for more than 53 staff members, and comprises of store rooms, strong rooms, staff rooms, kitchenette, showers, waiting rooms for guests, boardrooms etc.

thREE gOLd MEdALS fOR wAtERbERg fEt COLLEgEWaterberg FET College takes pride in two of their students who collected three gold medals in the 2013 National Track and Field championships which were held at the Lucas “Masterpiece” Moripe Stadium, Attredgeville on the 05th of May 2013. Two boys namely Kekana TM and Mphlahlele TS came in first place in 3 000m, 1 500m and long jump. The College had sent ten athletes to form part of the Limpopo FET Colleges’ team that would represent the province at the event. This is after the College came second in the Provincial Track and Field championships, held at Peter Mokababa stadium on the 15th of March 2013. The College encourages its students to take part in sports ac-tivities because it understands that through participation in sports activities, students learn teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing, the rewards of hard work, self-discipline, build self-confidence, and develop skills to handle competitive situations. These are qualities that students need to become responsible adults and productive citizens.

MR ANd MISS LIMPOPO 2013 On the 17th of August 2013, Waterberg FET College took part in the 2013 Limpopo Provincial FET’S Cultural Day. The event was hosted by Letaba FET College, Giyani Campus. Beauty Pageant and Drama were the core activities of the day, Waterberg FET College managed to get position one in the male pageant and our females came in position two and three consecutively. In the Drama competition the College came in position three. Waterberg has maintained its status in that during the 2012 Provincial Competitions, the Mr Limpopo FET was also from the College.

Waar is die dae toe mens nog die eerste week in Januarie gesit en naels kou het terwyl jy hoop en bid jou vakansiefoto’s kom darem mooi uit. Baie van ons jonger lesers besef nie eens dat daar sulke dae was nie - dae toe mens rolletjies film agter in kameras ‘gelaai’ het en dan 12, 24 of 36 foto’s op een rolletjie film gekry het. As jy lekker baie vakansiefoto’s ge-neem het, het die karevaan, woonstel of chalet se yskasdeurtjie gewoonlik ‘n klomp films in-gehad. As die film te warm geword het, het jou foto’s met ‘n pienk skynsel gedruk.

Fotografie was ‘n duur stokperdjie.Maar deesdae het byna almal kameras of dit

nou ‘n drie-megapixel outjie in klein Sumarie se pay-as-you-go foontjie is of die 12 megapixel in Ma se Galaxy Note. Dan is daar die 18-mega-

En gaan kyk maar deur die ou foto albums. Daai was mooi foto’s.

Hoewel die toerusting en medium vir fotografie goedkoper en meer toeganklik geraak het, bly die basies reëls nog altyd die-selfde. Ons wil ons lesers dus aanraai om hierdie vakansie ‘n bietjie meer tyd te neem en die volgende sewe reëls toe te pas wanneer hulle vakansiefoto’s neem - of dit nou met jou ou Blackber-ry, jou dogter se iPhone of daai nuwe Nikon is waarvoor jy die ekstra verband moes aangaan:

Die eerste en belangrikste taak is om jou met die kamera tot jou beskik-king te vereenselwig. Lees die eienaars-handleiding as jy dit nog nie wegge-gooi het nie. Speel so bietjie met jou kamera en kyk wat kan jy alles stel en maak seker jy weet hoe die verstellings jou foto’s beïnvloed. As jou kamera vir

jou niks meer as ‘n mik-en-druk moet wees nie, maak seker jy stel hom op sy Auto of Programme funksie. As jy bietjie meer beheer wil toepas, sorg dat jy weet watter knoppie doen wat.

Om jou komposisie interessant te hou, deel jou beeld horisontaal en vertikaal in derdes - asof jy kringetjies en kruisies wil speel. Plaas die detail of voorwerp/e waarop jy aandag wil ves-tig dan op een of meer van die punte waar die lyne kruis. Afhangend van wat jy wil beklemtoon - plaas die horison op die boonste of onderste derdelyn. ‘n Mens sal by-voorbeeld die horison op die onderste lyn plaas as jy ‘n sonsonder-gang met dramatiese kleure en wolkpatrone wil afneem, maar op die boonste derdelyn as jy ‘n landskapfoto neem waar die klein dorpie in die vallei doer onder jou fokuspunt is.

Pasop vir ‘n kamera wat skud. Deesdae het selfs foonkameras lens stabiliseerders ingebou wat mens toelaat om in effe swakker lig foto’s te neem. Dit bly egter raadsaam om na die sluiter-spoed op te let. Nuwe sin as die lig te min is vir ‘n vinnige sluiterspoed wat die beeld mooi sal vries, gebruik ‘n driepoot of sit jou kamera op iets stewigs neer en neem die foto met die tydvertrag-ingsfunksie. (Dis nou daai verstelling wat jou die sluiterknoppie laat druk en dan gee die kamera jou so 10 sekondes voordat hy die foto neem.)

Hou jou agtergrond skoon. Daar is niks so steurend soos ‘n mooi foto van jou oudste dogter wat op die strand lê en boek lees met ‘n bleek, maer, harige jafel in ‘n rooi Speedo in die agter-grond nie.

Probeer die foto uit ‘n ander hoek neem of wag dat Meneer Sannieshof uit die pad beweeg.


vaT ‘n foTo’Tjie, Pa!

Hou die lig agter jou. Dit is waar dat van die beste foto’s partykeer die lig direk van voor of skuins voor het, maar dit is of vloekskote of foto’s deur professionele fotograwe wat hul kameras en lense se vermoëns ken. Vir die res van ons is dit die heel veiligste om so te probeer neem dat die son of ligbron van agter die fotograaf af kom. Dit beteken nou nie jy moet almal in die son in laat kyk wanneer jy hulle afneem nie, jy kan die son skuins laat kom of hulle in die skaduwee laat staan, maar wees bedag daarop dat die son nie by jou lens inskyn nie. Pasop ook wanneer jy binne huis foto’s neem met oop vensters of deure in die agtergrond. Die skerp lig wat deur die venster kom is gewoonlik genoeg om alles anders in die foto te donker te laat lyk. As dit nie anders kan nie dwing die kamera om te flits - dit sal die lig van binne af uitbalanseer.

Staan nader met daai flits as jy in die aand

of binne-huis foto’s neem. Ingeboude flitse is regtig beperk wanneer dit by reikafstand kom. ‘n Mens kan nie sommer verder as twee meter van jou voorwerp af staan en verwag jou Nokia moet die toneel soos Loftus se spreiligte ophelder nie.

Hê jou kamera ten alle tye by jou. Dit is seker die belangrikste reël van almal.

Die duurste toe-rusting en mees uitgebreide fotografiekennis in die wêreld is niks werd as jy nie jou kamera by jou het wanneer ‘n fotogeleentheid hom voordoen nie. Dit is waarskynlik die grootste aantrekkingskrag van vandag se super duper sel-foonkameras.

En dan, ter afsluiting, nie ‘n reël nie, maar ‘n versoek. Stuur jou beste vakansiefoto’s met kort byskriffies vir ons by [email protected] sodat ons dit met ons lesers kan deel en ons mekaar inspireer tot beter foto’s en lekkerder vakansies.

and a Merry ChristmasNothing revives the human spirit like an early morning stroll in the Bushveld - especially if it has rained the previous night. And this being the rainy season, chances are you will have a few such mornings this Christmas holiday.

Yes, you may have to get out of bed bright and early to beat the Bushveld heat, but the rich greens of the Bushveld foliage, the fresh smells of wet earth and grass and the merry song of birds will make it all worthwhile.

Not only will your spirit be revived, your body will also benefit. If you do it enough mornings over the festive season, you may actually be able to counter the familiar New Years’ Tightness of Pants Syndrome. A common ailmant plaguing most South Africans no matter where they spend their Christmas holidays.

If that's not enough for you, here are ten more reasons to go for a walk:

Walking only 150 minutes per week and losing just 7% of your body weight can reduce your risk of diabetes by 58%. In one study, mortality rates among retired men who walked less than one mile per day were nearly twice that among those who walked more than two miles per day.

Women in the Nurse’s Health Study (72,488 female nurses) who walked three hours or more per week reduced their risk of a heart attack or other coronary event by 35% compared with women who did not walk.

In a study on walking and cognitive function, researchers found that people who walked the equivalent of an easy pace at least 1.5 hours per week had significantly better cognitive function and less cognitive decline than people who walked less than 40 minutes per week.

Research shows that postmenopausal women who walk approximately one mile each day have higher whole-body bone density than women who walk shorter distances, and walking is also effective in slowing the rate of bone loss from the legs.

Walking for 30 minutes, three to five times per week for 12 weeks re-duced symptoms of depression as measured with a standard depression questionnaire by 47%.

Women who performed the equivalent of one hour and 15 minutes to two and a half hours per week of brisk walking had an 18% decreased risk of breast cancer compared with inactive women. Many studies have also shown that exercise such as walking can prevent colon cancer, and even if an individual develops colon cancer, the benefits of exercise appear to con-tinue both by increasing quality of life and reducing mortality.

Walking just three times a week for 30 minutes can significantly in-crease cardiorespiratory fitness.

A study of sedentary people showed that short bouts of brisk walking (three 10-minute walks per day) resulted in similar improvements in fitness and were at least as effective in decreasing body fatness as long bouts (one 30-minute walk per day). Research shows that walking improves fitness and physical function and prevents physical disability in older persons.

So put on some comfortable shoes and hit the road. You won’t regret it.
