Parking woes at Jellie Park could be solved with offers of discounts and free gear if you leave the car at home.
The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board have hatched a plan to entice people into cycling, walking or taking the bus to the Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre by introducing “community/cyclist currency”.
This would mean those
who used public transport, walked or cycled to the facility would be eligible for free use of equipment or discounted rates.
City council staff are investigating the option,
and will include the idea in public consultation for the management plan that starts Saturday.
Once consultation is complete the final decision will be made by city councillors.
Parking issues have plagued the popular aquatic and rec-reation centre prompting the board to “think outside of the box”, said deputy chairman Da-vid Cartwright.
Mr Cartwright (right) thought if the idea could gain some trac-
tion then car parking problems could be more manageable.
If it works, he said it could be initiated city-wide.
“Obviously there are some car parking issues here and around the city, so if we can find a way to fix that and help people get active I think we should seri-ously consider it,” he said.
“There will be some people who are against it and some for it, but let’s have the conversa-tion and see what comes of it,” Mr Cartwright said.
Plan to get people riding to Jellie Park

Community boards in the north-west have eaten their way through just under $3500 of ratepayer-funded finger food in the past year.
The food which ranged from club sandwiches, hot food items, fruit, filled croissants, sushi and wraps was consumed at board meetings over a year.
The Fendalton-Waimairi and Shirley-Papanui Community Boards spent the least amount compared to other boards around the city.
The Fendalton-Waimairi Com-munity Board spent $1154 over the period of November 2014–Novem-ber 2015.
On average it spent $48 per meet-ing.
Shirley-Papanui was second, spending on average $97 per meeting
totalling $2340 over its 24 meetings.Figures released to the Nor’West
News under the Official Information Act showed more than $19,000 was spent by the eight community boards from November 2014 to
November 2015.City councillor
and Shirley-Papanui Community Board member Pauline Cotter said board meetings typically start with a seminar at 3pm flowing into a meeting at
4pm which can sometime run past 7.30pm.
She said the food was vital to keep board members fueled.
“We can’t have people fainting for lack of energy,” she said.
City councillor Jamie Gough was not surprised his board spent the least on food.
“A lot of the other boards have more controversial issues and their meetings run later, however we are a very tight knit board and can get out quicker,” he said.

MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER
My first job for 2016 is to wish everyone a happy and safe new year in the hope that some of the work that has been done to reduce fires has had an ef-fect. So far this year and even through the Christmas period this has been the case.
While there have been a few minor incidents involving grass, rubbish bins and fences the holi-day period has been remarkable for the lack of significant fires, or for that matter, other types of incident. So well done Christ-church and long may it last.
As usual however, our in-trepid crews have been involved in a number of animal rescues including ducklings, a cat, a dog down a cliff in Lyttelton, a swan and even a drowned horse in Akaroa Harbour.
This sort of work obviously involves the ‘feel good’ factor of helping and caring for dis-tressed wildlife but there is no better organisation to deal with such situations. We have decent
empathetic people who have great problem-solving skills and a good array of tools at their disposal. They don’t mind using them.
Just after Christmas we had the latest version of a long-time fire danger when the wall of a house in Waltham caught fire from the heat of a paint strip-ping gun. We probably see this about once every couple of years. Generally it seems to involve bird or rodent nest ma-terial inside the wall and can be quite disastrous. Care, a charged hose and an available phone are all recommended.

Michael Gorman – Christchurch City Missioner
Many people find Christmas very stressful. Some are reminded of happier times in the past when things were better for them. Many are lonely and isolated. For some stress comes from not being able to provide for their families because of illness, poverty or a lack of ability. It seems reason-able to question if it is worth celebrating Christmas at all.
For those who have faith in the Christmas story, or who have family that they can celebrate with it is well worth the effort. At the City Mis-sion we work hard to enable more people to enjoy this time of year and to have a happy Christmas without getting into debt or feeling bad because they cannot enjoy the festive season the way most of us do.
Recently there has been discussion about not just about
how we should celebrate Christmas but should we cel-ebrate Christmas at all. Some say that doing so discriminates against those who do not share our belief and that it is offen-sive. They suggest that we no longer say Merry Christmas and we should just wish each other a happy holiday. I trea-sure Christmas and the wonder-ful story of God becoming one of us. I think this is well worth celebrating.
This year I was invited to celebrate a Buddhist festival and I felt very privileged to be included. When I celebrate Christmas I too want to honour people of other beliefs or of
no belief. I want to share with them something that I hold special. I’m not asking them to believe what I believe but I want to share something that is important to me. I want them to celebrate with me, spend time with me, eat food with me and know me. Christmas is a part of my belief system and a part of my culture. I do not deny others their celebrations, culture and festivals and I am honoured if they include me in them. I do believe in the power of words and I know that they have the power to offend but when I say Merry Christmas this is a gift, an invitation to understand my belief. How can that be offensive?
Have your sayLooking back at Christmas last year, is it worth still celebrating? Does it drive more people into despair because of stress? Is it better to say “happy holidays” or are people being too PC? Email [email protected] with your thoughts.
Is Christmas still worth celebrating?

Elmwood Normal School pupils will have a safer journey across a busy road on their way to school thanks to a successful campaign by a Merivale resident.
Rachel Castles asked the Fendalton-Waimairi Commu-nity Board to lower the speed limit on Rossall St to 40km/h to improve safety for pupils cross-ing the road.
The board had already looked at a lower speed limit on Rossall St, near Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.
Ms Castles said it would be easy to extend it to the nearby primary school.
The board agreed and extend-ed the lower speed limit zone.
Ms Castles said Rossall St has
a heavy traffic flow and a more “holistic view” should be sup-ported as it would benefit other schools also in the area.
Board deputy chairman David Cartwright said it was a simple fix.
“We made some minor adjust-ments and now it is safer for both schools,” he said.
It will cost $69,000 to install the variable speed signs for the surrounding
roads of Rangi Ruru.Consultation for the project,
showed some residents wanted the speed limit reduced to in-clude Heaton St, Rhodes St and Hewitts Rd.
INCLUDED: A lower speed zone on Rossall St will make it safer for Elmwood Normal School pupils to get to class.

GRANT FOR GARDEN GROUPThe Shirley-Papanui Commu-nity Board has granted $5200 to the Packe St Community Garden Group to employ a part- time co-ordinator for the com-munity garden. Board member Pauline Cotter submitted an urgent report requesting that the board consider an application for funding from the discretion-ary response fund.
WASTEWATER REPAIRSQuake-damaged wastewater repairs between 12 to 38 Waiwetu St, Fendalton, are planned to be finished by the end of February. SCIRT said it is on schedule to finish repairing the wastewater laterals on the main. Due to the location and size of the pipe, there will be a full road closure in place along Waiwetu St during working hours of 7am-6pm Monday to Friday.

Hocus-pocus: Jazz musician turns into Badjelly the Witch
You are just beginning your rehearsals now and it is only three weeks until the show. What is the schedule like for the next few weeks?
It is a pretty short rehearsal period. One of the shortest for a show this big. We are going full with the theatre and we have a whole lot going on the stage. We started yesterday and the team is great.
What made you decide Badjelly would be a role you would like to play? Would this be one of the most interesting roles you have committed to?
I have never done a kids show. Badjelly is like a legend – Spike Milligan. Our director wants us to keep the essence of the char-acters. We are going to make Badjelly quirky as well. My costume is probably not what you would expect. But I won’t ruin the surprise.
What is your favourite line from the show and why?
Definitely I would have to say “stinky-poo”. I have to say that multiple times and I think that’s the one kids will enjoy the most as well.
The book is quite short, will there be any twists or anything different audiences can look forward to?
It keeps the essence of the story. Obviously Badjelly trying to find little boys and girls to make into yummy soup. The show is a musical and everyone has got a song. This was so each character can have its own story within the story.
For an example we want you to see what Mudwiggle the Worm would be like if he had his own story. It should be more than just Badjelly trying to steal kids. We will jam a whole lot of fun into 55min as well as keep in sync with the original story. Hamish Oliver has done arrangements of music and Geoff Davidson has written the music for us. We have adapted the words to our own original music. I love the music.
What are your performance goals for 2016?
This first half of the year is busy. I am in another production with Magnitude Productions – Rock of Ages. It is the New Zealand premier of the show so that is super exciting. We have the most amazing cast. Without sounding cliche it is going to be a hilariously “rocking” show. It is just 80s madness. I am playing the role of Justice who is a pow-erful woman. She is the madam of the “strip club”. Bit different from Badjelly. It is the whole girl falls in love with the boy. So I have those rehearsals on as well. I am going from Badjelly in the day to Rock of Ages rehearsals in the night. It is quite full on.
When you do have any spare time, what do you enjoy doing most?
I enjoy just hanging out with my friends to be honest. Being in the music circle my friends are often performing a lot. On a Sunday afternoon I often just like going to the Brewery and listening to my friends sing. I enjoy the sunshine while I am
not in the theatre. What made you decide mu-
sic was the career for you?I actually did classical and
opera through high school. My grandad is Doug Kelly and he is quite a well-known jazz band arranger. He is 93 and still here going strong. Inti tally in high school I did a lot of classical training but when I got accepted into jazz school and my voice just found its place singing jazz. I progressed into teaching.
What made you decide mu-sic was the career for you?
I actually did classical and opera through Burnside High School. My grandad is Doug Kelly and he is quite a well-known jazz band arranger. He is 93 and still here going strong. Inti tally in high school I did a lot of classical training but when I got accepted into CPIT [Christ-church Polytechnic Institue of Technology] jazz school and my voice just found its place singing jazz. I progressed into teaching.
Was your family ever inter-ested in music?
My love for music has defi-nitely come from my grandad. Pretty much everyone in my family can play an instrument – I am just the one that does it as a job.
In December the Garden City Big Band put on a tribute for my grandad and Doug Caldwell who is a jazz pianist in his late 80s. They both used to run the Radio City Band. It was pretty much a sell-out. It shows the respect not only from the jazz community but the music commu-nity. I also did a surprise tribute for my grandad in 2010 as part of a jazz and music festival. He was quite taken back.
You released a jazzy
CD of a range of popular songs in 2013 and I hear you have an album coming out this year. Will it be original songs?
Basically I am calling it the 12 pianist project. I am planning on using a different pianist ev-ery month. I planned on finding as many pianists in Christchurch and doing a different track with them. Christchurch does have some of the most amazing jazz pianists. I am hoping to have that done by early 2017.
What are your songs about?I write songs about what
inspires me from my own life and about my relationships with people. That doesn’t necessar-ily mean a sappy love-song. I may write in personal jokes from friends. I feel like it is a success if I have connected with someone.
You have done a lot from reading your performance CV, what is the most significant performance you have done?
It was definitely the 2010 tribute for my grandad but I have to do a bit of name-dropping. We used to sing backing vocals for L.A Mitchell – she is a
singer song-writer renowned in New Zealand. She worked with musicians such as Dave Dobbyn, but we were lucky enough to open for Stevie Wonder. We got to meet Stevie and I have no words to describe that.
You have had a few high-lights in you career. Did you grow up in Christchurch?
Yes, I was born and bred in Christchurch. I went to Cots-well Primary School, Cobham Intermediate and Burnside High School.
Now it is the first time in my life I feel like I have established myself. I want to help keep the jazz music alive in Christchurch. I am feeling satisfied with where I am now. Never know I may have a child one day.
Are you married and all that?
Just single, independent woman. I feel like because of that I have been able to do a lot more. But because I have established myself I feel like that is the step over the next 10 years.
Children better watch out because Badjelly the Witch is coming to town later this month. Georgia O’Connor-Harding speaks to Kate Taylor about her role as the wicked witch, her well-known grandfather, and the time she sang with Stevie Wonder
STINKY POO: Badjelly is soaring into town this summer.

Fire crews battled a blaze that tore through the old archives building at Christchurch Boys’ High School on Friday morning. Fire Service southern communications shift manager Riwai Grace said the building was a single storey 10m by 5m brick storage shed and because it was earth-quake damaged, firefighters did not enter. He said the fire was well involved when crews from Christchurch Central, Harewood and Sockburn arrived around 1am. The fire is being treated as suspicious and police and fire investigations are under way. PHOTOS: ANDREW KING

tasty bitesAdd grapes to your mealThere’s something to be said for having a routine: Meatless Monday, Wednesday leftovers, Friday pizza night. A routine helps keep planning and shopping on track so there’s less stress at dinnertime. But keeping to a routine doesn’t mean meals have to be boring. Go global to shake things up!PASTA WITH GRAPES AND CHICKEN SAUSAGE – Serves 6
INGREDIENTS 170g spicy Italian chicken sau-sage, casings removed 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 large red onion, thinly sliced 3 cloves garlic, minced ¾ cup low sodium chicken broth ½ cup non-fat half and half ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 cups red California grapes, halved ½ tsp each salt and freshly ground black pepper 340g dry pappardelle or fettuc-cine ¼ cup chopped Italian parsley
METHOD Set a large pot of water on high heat. At the same time, brown the sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat, break-ing it up with a spoon. Once cooked, remove to a plate. Add the olive oil to the empty skillet, then the onion and cook until softened, about eight minutes. Add the garlic and cook one minute more. Stir in the broth and simmer until reduced by
about half, about five minutes. Add the half-and-half, and bring to a simmer. Stir in the Parme-san and return the sausage to the pan. Add the grapes and parsley and turn off the heat. Season with salt and pepper.
Add the pasta and salt to taste to the boiling water. Cook until al dente; drain and transfer to the skillet. Pour the drained pasta into the skillet, toss and serve.

Q A&Do you have some ideas forusing up ham?Include in salads andtoasted sandwiches, andadd to fritters, risotto, friedrice and omelettes. Try
Ham and Egg Charlotte, which can be assembled inadvance: Roughly chop 4hard-boiled eggs and layerin a casserole dish with 250gchopped ham, 300ml whitesauce and 3/4 cup butteredbreadcrumbs, in that order.Slice a tomato on top andsprinkle with a fewmorebuttered breadcrumbs, thenbake in amoderately hotoven for 30minutes. Servewith a green vegetable.
How do I use leaf gelatine?Soak the leaves in coldwater for 5minutes, thensqueeze them and drop intohot (not boiling) liquidthat’s part of the recipe, stirring until dissolved.Note that different grades
have slightly differentsetting powers (ie goldgrade will set slightlymorethan silver), but as ageneral rule, 1 sheet of leafgelatine is equal to 1teaspoon granulatedgelatine andwill set 250ml(1 cup) liquid to a soft jelly. Each can be substituted forthe other by exact weight.

At his Montreal Street studio Lovebite, internationally renowned dental technician Richard Greenlees creates beautiful bespoke dentures with small
nuances in the fabrication, colour and shape and even slight imperfections to create a uniquely individual smile.
There is no need for dentures to look false. Richard takes a great deal of satisfaction in making bespoke dentures that look one hundred percent real and natural, personally guiding his patients through the transformation process, to craft a smile that reflects their individuality and personality, and recreates their natural pre-denture smile.
Not only do Lovebite teeth look real, the whole structure and shape of the patient’s face is transformed with Richard’s top-of-the-line dentures – something he calls his signature ‘denture lift’. “With appropriate facial support, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, the lips are reformed, and beauty is restored,” he says. It is the interior architecture of a Lovebite denture that helps to create a more youthful appearance by recovering the face and skeletal shape that can be lost after years of wearing dentures.
As the smile is transformed, so is the patient’s confidence, and the way they feel about themselves.
Richard’s vast experience includes 15 years running his own clinic in the prestigious Harley Street, London, where he treated people from all walks of life, from barrow boys to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians.
His techniques are recognised as world-leading amongst his international peers and he is regularly asked to lecture and run courses worldwide.
Miles Cone (DMD, MS, FACP, CDT), a prosthodontist from Oregon, USA, said in November 2015: “Richard Greenlees’ craftsmanship is as stunning as it is unique. There is liberation in the calculated imperfection, indeed an asperity that reflects a purely human element”.
In addition to dentures, Richard also carries out crown and bridge, veneer and implant work, in conjunction with like-minded dental surgeons who complement his creative and aesthetic work.
“Teeth are as different as fingerprints and vary greatly depending on a person’s age, sex and race. Dentures from Lovebite reflect this, and are as unique and individual as the people they are made for,” says Richard.
There is nothing more satisfying for Richard, than to see his patients leave the Lovebite studio with their self-confidence and identity restored, as well as their smile.

Are you one of the 70 per cent with EXCESS CANDIDA
Heart burn, Indigestion, Feeling tired often, Low energy, Gas, Bloating, Irregular bowels, Constipation or diarrhoea,

A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. It is estimated around 70% of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin.
It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is normally kept under control by the good gut bacteria or

probiotics that feed on this yeast. However using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid, and medications are some of the common factors that can upset this delicate balance and allow the candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall over time causing inflammation and leaky gut syndrome where toxins and only partly digested proteins can enter the bloodstream often leading to food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma. The immune system becomes weak and colds, influenza and chronic infections occur often. The candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. In the bloodstream it travels around the body to places where the environment is suitable for it to inhabit. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic micro-organism or virus that’s form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in Cancer and other chronic health conditions. However it is the bodies weakened immune system and
toxic environment that is the real cause of disease.
Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. To cleanse candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months. However when this is achieved a great burden will have
been removed from your body resulting in more optimal health. The Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy can provide you with a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the excess candida and it’s fungus from the body and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Campus Principal Gary Taylor said, “Having operated out of an earthquake-damaged building in Manchester St for some time
now, we are delighted to have found the perfect building and location.”
The new building, on the south side of Hagley Park, was recently vacated by Deloittes, and will be fully furnished and equipped by the time of the first courses starting on the second of February.
“Education is the key to getting a good job now,” says Taylor, “and we can boast outstanding outcomes from our programmes. By way of example, 88 per cent of our web development and software engineering graduates from our four nation-wide campuses get great jobs in their respective fields.”
Vision College is also well known for its counselling degree, as well as the highly successful Early Childhood teaching programmes, among others.
Taylor says, “I know one of the key features that attracts students to us is the
smaller class sizes and personal level of tuition. We are very much a tutor-lead provider with a lot of one-on-one tuition given. There are a lot of students that like that environment ahead of large lecture theatre style.”
A separately branded component of the operation is Trainme, which will also relocate to the new building.
Trainme offers free foundation level programmes to those aged 16 to 19. The two courses on offer for a February start are the well named the #Ultimate Career Taster and Security forces training.
The #Ultimate is designed for those who don’t want to go back to school and would like to get credits towards NCEA and experience a range of career options, including getting their driver’s licence. The Security course is very popular with those wanting a career in uniform such as the military, police or security industry, being a very physically challenging course.

To the manor born68 Fisher Ave, Beckenham $849,0005 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 1 toilet | 2 living rooms | 1 office/study | 2 car-garage | Listing #: BE192455
Grand and gracious, and located in the highly sought after Fisher Avenue. This has been a treasured home for my clients and their
family, but it is now time to pass the ownership of such a beautiful home to a new owner.
Step onto the verandah and into the entrance to be greeted with an old-world elegance of wood panelling and leadlight windows. With five double bedrooms and a study, there is room for all to be comfortably housed. There are two spacious bathrooms and a large modern kitchen, with open plan dining room leading into a formal lounge.
My clients have had the EQC work completed, and there is still scope for you to add your touch to this home. A lovely big backyard will be ideal for the children to play in, and there is room to park a caravan or boat as well.
This is truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the original homes in Fisher Ave, so don’t hesitate to call now.
To arrange a private viewing of this property, call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) now on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.
