The ONE ASIA project started in Auroville, India, in 2010 with the aim of presenting Asia’s cultural richness and profound spirituality to the world.

The culture of the East expresses its spiritual depth and wideness based on an Inherent Oneness. Most of its traditional arts are rooted in this spiritual fountainhead. Unity in diversity will not be manifested through the imposition of external rules but has to be discovered within. The awareness of the One in the many is the undercurrent of Asian culture and is the secret of its long lasting beauty. While the modern world celebrates human diversity, very often human unity is seen only in the context of uniformity.

Cultural exchanges among Asian countries will create a large spiritual and cultural milieu in Asia which will stimulate the cultures of these very countries. Unfortunately, this is a time of cultural distraction and a ‘lost-identity’ syndrome since many nations are solely focusing on political and economical growth. Rejuvenation of traditional culture will counterbalance this extreme situation.

On his birthday on 15th August, in 1947, Sri Aurobindo’s ‘Five Dreams’ were broadcast via All India Radio. In one of these, he said that unity in Asia will contribute to the unity of the world. Other forerunners from the 20th century have also tried to bring unity in times of disorder.

Since 2010, a number of musicians, dancers, poets, visual artists, tea ceremony masters, martial artists, Sufi & Zen practitioners and flower-arrangement artists from different Asian countries have participated in the ONE ASIA project.

We aspire to bring together more of these artistes practicing traditional culture in order to co-create, with their input, a new and conscious diversity. We hope to share our findings with a world of increasing chaos that awaits a strong foundation for a brighter, truer future for humanity.

Since my first visit in Taiwan I got a strong impression that Taiwan is a place like a treasure island in many aspects. Since then I have become a frequent visitor to Taiwan and my stays only proved that my first impression about Taiwan was correct.

The island is densely covered by tropical vegetation and surrounded by beautiful sea. It contains high mountains, hills, lakes, rivers and hot springs. One can find beautiful sceneries in every moment they stay in Taiwan. My first remark for Taiwan’s treasure is its richness in natural landscape.

On top of this, cultural richness in Taiwan is something truly remarkable which can be proudly presented to the world. Many tangible and intangible treasures from the past are fondly maintained by cultured people in Taiwan. Art lovers and cultural connoisseur are knowledgeable and they try to integrate these cultural heritages into their daily life.

For example, tea ceremony, calligraphy & paintings, Gu-qin & Pipa music, incense ceremony, Taichi-chuan are the very part of the daily life in Taiwan. All of these are art-form to enrich the daily life and the ways of self-discipline since the ancient time. Literati’s spirit [文人精神] is still alive in Taiwan.

I believe that those who work hard to pursue their goals and to achieve perfection are the real treasure in the society.

DIRECTOR’SNOTE

At the same time this island consists of well developed modern cities. From the viewpoint of a foreigner, existing infrastructure and economic stability account for the happy daily life here. I also see that it is a positive sign in the society that citizens are well involved in improving democratic governance. I met many elder people who do not indulge themselves in retirement; they are still enjoying their work.

In Asian countries we have gone through the influence of modernism in 20th century and now we are facing a new paradigm of history. It seems to me that Taiwan directs an ideal way of living because of the well conserved nature, integrated culture and lively citizens.

Art – in its essence – is a uniting force and unending aspiration towards higher ideals in life. Through this spirit we can go beyond and unite the differences. At the same time, we can equally celebrate the diversities of all unique beings through the deep understanding of inherent oneness.

We wish to be a platform of self-discovery and self-transformation. We invite you to join our cultural exchange in order to establish an inspiring creative relationship among Asian countries. Let us co-create a brighter future and proudly present it to the world.

I would like to express my gratitude to all the generous gift and heartfelt support to all the beautiful friends in Taiwan.

[Jyoti]

‘ko kona lam’ is a multimedia dance performance brought to you by dancer/drawing artist grace gitadelila. her work originates from a deeply lived and researched South Indian ephemeral drawn syllabus, which is kolam, kolam is daily practiced at the crack of dawn by Tamil women. Its ephemeral visual language of chalk/ rice powder dot and line drawings give form to a rich vocabulary of movements, gestures, intentions and prayers. ko~ sounding the aspiration to acquire knowledge of the unknown kona~from the highest peak, from the Divine Lam~descends to Earth… Saraswati[大辯才天] and her Swan, birds, bees, flowers, and rivers gesture and construct angular space in the dance whilst a tapestry of living ‘ko kona lam’ is woven together. grace choreographed the work to a flute play of Sung Pil Yang from korea, also attending the ONE ASIA festival!

grace gitadelila grew up in South India and learning from Tamil women all about their ephemeral visual language the kolam. Little did she know that one day the kolam would ask her to make it her life journey to speak in kolam tongue with body and gestures drawn on to Earth’s surface. her training in various disciplines of dance and drawing help her now to create new found integral connections between the two~Dance and Drawing~.

Tamil [

Saraswati(大辯才天,音譯:薩拉斯瓦蒂)會和她的

與‘ko kona lam’。

The Lines of Continuity: “Continuing the explorations of letter forms, strokes & energy of these lines, his journey of calligraphy continues with new dimensions emerging in the works. Connections between cultures underlying in various ritualistic and mystic traditions of the written word, that represent the hidden unity amongst diverse practices has been his area of interest. The ritualistic, cultural and phonetic significance in diverse Indian traditions have inspired him immensely; As the new technologies take us further away from these ancient practices that have survived millennia, his connection to these forms get stronger and he strives to go further on this path, trying to imbibe the energies that help you grow within yourself; Through Calligraphy practice, he experiences the unknown force that binds us all cultures together. he follows these invisible lines of continuity that connects these traditions to take these traditions further through the path of the written word.”

vISUAL art Art is the uniting force. Living art is vibrant and long-lasting.

The artists are seeking the secret of beauty and bring this to the visible form.

In fact their creative journey itself is a piece of art. We have invited a master of Indian miniature painting and calligraphers for this event. Their common stand point is that art is dedicated to the One in the Many, the Spirit which is prevailing in all beings.

We aim to pave a road for the art and people to reconnect with its own source once again.

Qamar Dagar was born to a family of renowned classical musicians of India while she was always drawn towards visual arts.

Amir Abdullah khan is her spiritual and calligraphy guide inspired her to follow her ambition. After her graduation in sociology from University of Delhi that helped her to be sensitive to the aspects of other cultures. She travelled to Europe as an accompanying musician with her family. by speaking Urdu language at home, also Sanskrit language and hindi/braj-bhasha [sung in the music compositions] she was fascinated by the richness of those Indian languages.

progressively these very languages [hindi/Urdu] became the focal point of her work. Amir Abdullah khan was a great master of traditional calligraphy, writing verses of the holy Quran. Qamar developed an interest in exploring two scripts, which is rather unusual. he encouraged her to follow her heart and enhance her skill. Since the early nineties she has worked on hindi and Urdu scripts in which alphabets/ letters are used as art material to give visual interpretation to a chosen theme.

passionate about calligraphy and letterforms— especially the Indian Devanagari script. he explores abstracting letterforms until type crosses over into the realm of illustrations. he is currently working at the intersection of design and art through commissioned art and commercial calligraphy projects, alongside mainstream graphic design projects.

he sees letterforms as imagery. his attempt with every artwork is to explore and express the secret beauty of forms hidden within the alphabet.

he tries to unveil these forms by deconstructing the structure of the alphabet through various materials— conventional and unconventional.

Letters entice him. Speak to him.

To him, the alphabet is a perfect metaphor for unity in diversity. Each alphabet has a unique character in terms of phonetics and forms. Together, they are a beautiful example of coexistence and harmony, where individual alphabets come together to form a language, and therefore a culture.

poosapati parameshwar Raju is legendary in contemporary Indian art. born in 1961, parameshwar hails from vizianagaram city. he has been practicing for the last thirty years. He is influenced by the works of his great grandfather Sri Appala Raju who sculpted figures of stone and metal for the temple for worship, who also specialized in fresco and created a new medium for sculpture and relief [it is a flat form sculpture] work with tamarind seed paste and cloth. This ambient environment has nurtured a strong passion for history, traditional customs, rituals and folklore and their preservation in him. This sensibility infiltrates his images wherein he brings up traditional subjective forms that he revisits with an entirely contemporary approach of simplification that modern audience is able to relate to and read from. parameshwar ís celebration of Iconography, is a revelation of a new expression that weave together, memories of viewers from various parts of the country, with a single yarn of the shared tradition. From 2009 onwards the artist traveled within the country to work with traditional paithini weavers, kalamkari [hand drawn cloth painting] Masters and block makers [block print Maker].
