My Life As A Tamil Kid
( M asilan Sundara )
Let me just say, learning how to be a Tamil kid is a privilege which I am blessed with. But there are lots of responsibilities and extra tasks you must face. In this article you will learn about some of them.
Language: Tamil is spoken worldwide but it is an official language in India (of course), Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. The Tamil language dates back to about 10,000 BCE. Tamil is one of the Dravidian languages and is also one of the most ancient languages in the world. Specifically, in India Tamil is spoken in Pondicherri and Tamil Nadu.
Food: Tamil food is mostly based on grains, vegetables and rice. Some delicious examples are idly, thosai, chutney, sambar and bir iyani. Traditionally, in Tamil culture you eat from a banana leaf (since it is good for health). Tamil cooking is both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. There are many spices involved in Tamil food such as curry leaves, mustard seeds, coriander, ginger, garlic, chili, pepper, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, green cardamom, nutmeg, coconut and rosewater. Because these spices are good for your health we use most of them in cooking. Instead of using utensils like spoons, forks and knives, we use clean hands to eat.
Special events: Some special events that we celebrate are pongal vizha, kodai vizha and in the USA the FeTNA Convention. My favorite one out of all of these is FeTNA. It is held each year in different cities in the United States. Last year it was held in Charleston, SC where I live. Both children and adults can participate in all sorts of events like Tamil jeopardy, Tamil speeches, writing Tamil
hard work pays off once you win those trophies! And trust me I've felt that pride 3 times in a row. FeTNA gets increasing number of visitors every year.
Tamil exercises for your body: I know two exercises for your body that you might find useful. One of them is Yoga. Its purpose is to stretch your body and to make your body become more flexible. The other one is breathing exercise. You might think it is just breathing in and out but it has more to it than that. It's when you take a deep breath and let it out in a long chanting Om. If you have asthma you may want to try this because this will increase your lung capacity.
Ancient Tamil songs: Another thing that I learn are ancient Tamil songs that are more than 2,500 years old. These songs are from a collection called Purananooru which means a collection of 400 songs. I know two of them beginning oril neidhal (song number 194) and yathum oorae (song number 192). They are both about 2 minutes long to sing and both are very hard to learn. But if you try you can really do it.
Well, I hope you got a pretty good visual about how it is like to be a Tamil kid and you got to learn about some of those extra tasks I was talking about earlier.
