Section 1- Reading comprehension The Maltese Islands The Maltese Islands are situated in the Mediterranean Sea. They consist of Malta, Gozo and Comino. The Maltese are one of the oldest civilizations in the Mediterranean. The population is around 350.000 and the official languages are Maltese and English, with most of people also fluent in Italian. In spite of the islands small size, they offer a variety of settings, seaside resorts, inland towns and rural locations. In most places, a rich variety of history and culture can be found. Swimmers are well rewarded in the Maltese islands, with good sea quality, bathing areas relatively accessible from most parts and no tides. The Maltese Archipelago is a real paradise for divers. Apart from other positive aspects, one of the most important is that the Maltese Islands are an all-year-round centre for the diver. Even in severe winter, the sea temperature never drops below 13C. The climate and duration of sunshine at that time of year are similar to an average north European summer and this has the advantage that many species of fish move to slightly warmer waters. As they are not disturbed by swimmers during this season, the diver has even better opportunities for observation and photography than in summer. If you want to give it a try, it is not necessary to bring along your own equipment for a short diving visit, as it is possible to hire equipment at reasonable rates. In places which are difficult to go to, it is more comfortable to dive from a boat, especially as there is always somebody available for assistance and control of the divers. Beginners and advanced divers will receive help and assistance from the many schools on the islands, to ensure that their holiday in Malta is trouble-free and enjoyable.
