Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. Whether children are in preschool, elementary, middle or high school, parent/family involvement plays a crucial role in students’ academic success.

Through the Office of Parent Engagement within the Student Support Initiatives Department, the District works to strengthen the home-family-school connection and create new ways to educate parents about how they can help their children achieve.

Parent Involvement AwardThe Florida Department of Education’s Parent Involvement Award, which is sponsored by the Florida PTA and supported through business partnerships, recognizes schools that develop successful programs to promote parent and family involvement. Nominees reflect an innovative practice for recruitment, training, and/or recognition of parents and families at the school level. These efforts may focus on removing barriers, communicating, volunteering, training, mentoring, decision-making and collaborating with the community. The school-level nominee selected as the District winner is eligible to compete for state recognition.

Online Resources for Parent Involvement The District’s website, browardschools.com, includes a variety of resources for parents and families. Parents can access information and resources to help them stay informed about their child’s academic progress, educational digital learning resources, details on how to get involved in their child’s school and much more. This “one-stop shop” has everything a parent needs to get involved and stay involved in their child’s education. Take a look! Visit browardschools.com, and click on the “Parents” tab.

Parents’ Guide to Broward County Public SchoolsThe Parents’ Guide to Broward County Public Schools is a handy booklet that serves as a parent’s roadmap to the District. This guide contains a comprehensive listing of topics of interest for parents, along with contact information for each topic. Detailed information ranges from health immunization requirements to accommodations for military dependent students. Available in four languages (English, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Portuguese), the guide is one more method Broward County Public Schools has developed to foster a strong relationship between parents and schools in an ongoing effort to increase student achievement.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT AWARDElementary Level Winner

READING READINESSIS EVERYBODY’S

BUSINESSVirginia Shuman Young Montessori

Magnet Elementary School

PARENT INVOLVEMENT AWARDSecondary Level Winner

Faced with the challenge of helping struggling students improve their reading skills, Virginia Shuman Young Montessori Magnet Elementary decided to think outside the box. The Reading Readiness is Everybody’s Business program grew from the vision of one very active parent who believed that consistent and targeted individualized coaching in reading would lead to improvements in student literacy. Initially the program focused on recruiting, training and mobilizing parents to work one-on-one with students who need extra help with reading and comprehension. The results were astounding!

Now in its fourth year, the program currently has more than 70 students enrolled and an army of reading volunteers who meet individually with their students twice a week. Building on their success, Virginia Shuman Young has expanded the reading coach model to include students helping other students. Fourth and fifth graders referred by their teachers, assist struggling kindergarten students with their literacy needs. Students serve as role models to the younger students, while improving their own leadership and communication skills. The literacy program has been so successful that a math component has been added.

PARENT 2 PARENTCONNECTION

Awilda M. Pavon, PTA TreasurerApollo Middle School

The Parent 2 Parent Connection at Apollo Middle trains veteran parent volunteers to help inform, educate and provide other parents with the information and tools necessary to equip them to better serve the needs of ALL students. The staff, students, parents and community understand the importance of ensuring that everyone is actively engaged in educating the students in the school. Thanks to the Parent 2 Parent Connection, participation in other school activities has increased substantially. However, what makes this program unique is the recognition that parents must be an integral part of the creation of support mechanisms that serve the needs of the parents.

One stellar example is the fact that this program provides parents with access to information in their native language and takes cultural differences into account in all communication and programming. Collaboration between parents and school leaders, the Parent Teacher Association, School Advisory Council, Title I and Parent Teacher Student Association contributed to the program’s success by ensuring wide representation and inclusivity. At Apollo Middle, the Parent 2 Parent Connection demonstrates that providing parent leaders with the knowledge, skills and confidence to support other parents is a win-win situation.

STEM MUSEUM EXHIBIT NIGHTLiberty Elementary School

Liberty Elementary has implemented an event called “Showcase Nights,” which supports increased parent involvement and student achievement. The primary goal of the program is to provide students with a museum-type forum to showcase their work to parents and community members. This is an evening that fosters parent and student participation in the study of cumulative integrated units. The daily STEM lessons and the Showcase Nights allow students to be accountable for their learning, and responsible for sharing with parents and the community exactly what they have learned.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUMPlantation Elementary School

Plantation Elementary hosts quarterly family literacy events throughout the school year. The primary goal is to facilitate a collaborative teaching and learning experience. The culminating event, “Night at the Museum,” is an opportunity for students to display outcome-based projects showcasing educational efforts through project-based learning. Additionally, this program has been successful in increasing the involvement of parents and community members. The “Night at the Museum” exhibitions work towards the school’s mission of educating responsible citizens and preparing them for college and career readiness.

MULTICULTURAL AWARENESS AND PARENT SUPPORT (MAPS)Tamarac Elementary School

Student success can be best achieved when the school, parents and community work in collaboration. Increasing parent involvement for English Language Learners (ELL) can assist student learning. The Tamarac Elementary Multicultural Awareness and Parent Support (MAPS) program’s goal is to empower parents with resources they need to better assist their children in their learning. In partnership with the English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and school team, MAPS is a cohesive support system that advocates for the needs of ELL students and their families.

From the many outstanding mentor nominations received from schools, outstanding mentors and mentoring programs were selected in the categories of Community-based, School-based, and Ind i v i dua l Men to r ing Programs.

In selecting the Community-based, School-based and Indiv idual Mentors of the Year, the evaluation committee considered such factors as: program planning; program implementation; the length of service; scope and regularity of involvement; uniqueness of approach; impact on students’ behaviors and attitudes; attendance and academic success; and the overall support of the school.

We are pleased to share the extraordinary stories of our mentors and to describe the unique gifts of wisdom, guidance and life experience they share with their students.

YOUTH MENTORING PROGRAMS – SUPPORTED PROGRAMSMentoring is growing, thanks to the support and involvement of schools, organizations, local businesses, corporations and service clubs throughout Broward County. We would like to acknowledge our school-based mentoring programs. These programs were developed by schools to meet the needs of their students. We commend their creativity and diligence in serving our students in Broward County.

Apollo Middle School, Ladies of Style and Elegance: Ladies of Style and Elegance is a mentoring program for at-risk eighth grade ladies. It provides them with workshops and activities designed to teach responsibility, composure, dedication and ambition in order to create imminent professionals.

Banyan Elementary School, Boys to Men and Lady Braves Empowerment: James and Tina Teague mentor students every Wednesday and Thursday. The topics range from self-esteem to friendships and how to conduct themselves as young ladies and gentlemen.

Cross Creek School, Mentoring Through Sports and Young Men Moving Forward: Mr. Lamont with the assistance of the safety team have provided mentorship and guidance through sports, as well as social and emotional team building activities. Their patience, guidance and leadership have proved to be invaluable to the success of the students.

William Dandy Middle School, Adopt-A-Child: Our school-based mentoring activities provide guidance and support to our students to meet attendance goals and improve the academic performance of minority male students, as aligned to the Minority Male Initiative goals. The entire faculty is fully involved in the program and the mentors conduct frequent one-on-one mentoring sessions with their mentees.

Fort Lauderdale High School, Live Free Be Strong: The focus of the “Live Free Be Strong” program is anti-bullying and building tolerance for diverse communities. The school hosted anti-bullying workshops for our local elementary and middle school students, which were run by high school students trained by David Vincent, founder of “Live Free Be Strong.” Mr. Vincent has also donated over $1,000 in scholarship funds to support our Gay/Straight Alliance, and has assisted in producing and publishing an anti-bullying song written by one of our students.

McNicol Middle School, RAISE the Bar: RAISE the Bar is a male development and success initiative exclusive to McNicol Middle. Minority male students have access to learning tools designed to enhance academic and professional excellence. RAISE the Bar is a school-day leadership program with before school and after school academic support components. RAISE the Bar’s curriculum covers various topics including African American history, teen pregnancy prevention and communication skills.

Millennium Middle School, SCORE Mentoring Program: The goal of the SCORE (Students Centered on Reaching Excellence) Mentoring Program is to provide mentorship for students exhibiting signs of “at-risk” behaviors, as determined by Broward County Public Schools. Areas of concentration include attendance, behavior modification, retention, overage and excessive tardiness. Teacher and parent recommendations are also accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Nova Blanche Forman Elementary School, Debate Mentors: Nova Blanche Forman created a “Debate Mentor” Program. This unique program pairs students from Nova High Schools’ renowned Debate Team with an elementary student in need of a positive role model. Seventy-eight percent of the mentees are minority and sixty-five percent face economic challenges. The mentors spend an hour a week fostering the development of student social skills, promoting positive attitude, encouraging positive choices, and increasing student achievement and academic success.

Parks Lakes Elementary School, P.I.N.K.- Positive Influence Nurtures Knowledge: P.I.N.K. is designed to enhance our fourth and fifth grade girls’ self-esteem, academic, social, and emotional development and avoidance of problem/high risk behavior by providing a supportive environment in a small group setting. The girls planted a garden in the City of Lauderdale Lakes, visited seniors, and made the honor roll. We are proud to report that we have 100% parental involvement.

Piper High School, Men of Vision & Excellence (M.O.V.E.): M.O.V.E. focuses on promoting minority male success, closing the achievement gap, jobs, internships, dress for success, peer mentoring and volunteering. Students attend monthly M.O.V.E.MENT themes and seminars.

Plantation High School, RISE UP and E.L.I.T.E. Programs: In alignment with and in support of the vision and mission of

Broward County Public Schools Strategic Plan, Plantation High is working to graduate 100% of our students

“college and career ready” in four years. In an effort to reach this goal, two new programs,

RISE UP and E.L.I.T.E., have been designed and implemented. RISE UP is a preventive, research-based recovery model tailored to the specific academic needs of 11th grade students. E.L.I.T.E. is a minority male success

initiative recognized by the Black Male Task Force.

Silver Lakes Elementary School, Mommies and Daddies on Campus: Teachers and parents serve as mentors to students who exhibit any emotional or social need. Teachers and mentors meet with students at least once a week. Special events throughout the year offer mentor and mentees opportunities to spend special time together playing games, cooking, doing arts and crafts, etc. The program has been active for several years. Many of our mentors have been mentoring the same student for several years.

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY-BASEDMENTORING PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

OUTSTANDING SCHOOL-BASEDMENTORING PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

Tom Schroeder, Principal of Margate Elementary, was contacted by Pastor C. J. Walter of Cokesbury United Methodist Church at the beginning of the school year, about an interest his congregation had in providing additional resources to the community. The congregation wanted to provide mentors and an after-school program to benefit Margate Elementary students. The collaboration between parents, school personnel and mentors created a program that provides resources, books and after-school tutoring free of charge to Margate Elementary students. Every Thursday, from 2:15 - 5:15 p.m., students work with individual mentors who help with homework and promote team spirit, while providing a safe environment for students to have fun, grow and learn.

Activities such as games, reading and outdoor sports are coordinated for students. Additionally, students are provided with snacks before leaving for the day.

The program mentors are proud to wear their bright red “Thumbs-Up Thursday” t-shirts, and constantly express how rewarding the program is for them, as well as the students. “Watching our program grow was like a miracle. A miracle of love from people that have so much to give.”

Since his arrival at Hallandale Magnet High in 2002, professional director, playwright, songwriter, actor, educator and mentor, Mr. John W. Battle III, has developed a highly notable list of achievements. Using out-of-the-box teaching strategies, he continues to influence students through arts and track and field.

In 2011, he created the Students Willing to Advance Toward Graduating Educational Program, better known as “S.W.A.G.” This program is a student-to-student mentoring program for the students in the Hallandale Innovation Zone. S.W.A.G. participants are junior and senior ambassadors who have exemplified high academic achievement, good behavior and leadership. S.W.A.G. members attend workshops on career guidance and college planning. S.W.A.G.’s mission is to silently enhance the overall school climate at Hallandale Magnet High School and Hallandale Innovation Zone.

Mr. Battle holds a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University and a Bachelor of Science with honors in Theatre Education from Florida A & M University. “Winning this award means that my efforts to positively impact the lives of children have not gone unnoticed.”

OUTSTANDING MENTOR OF THE YEAR

DR. GREGORY A. SALTERSCharles R. Drew Elementary School

Drew Men of Class

Dr. Gregory A. Salters is a very involved member of the Charles R. Drew Elementary community. Although his main focus is on male students and the single-gender male classes, he takes the time to positively impact the entire community, and has done so for the last four years.

Dr. Salters understands the importance of culturally competent role models. These role models are able to relate and inspire individuals to be successful. With this insight, he engages our young men and discusses their dreams and aspirations; he then inspires them to work hard to achieve greatness. He uses this same approach when dealing with students, and parents during Parent Teacher Association and School Advisory Council meetings, as well as faculty and staff. He can also be counted on to participate in and serve as a resource for other school activities, such as Read-A-Thons and Career Days. His life experiences serve to strengthen and validate his approach.

Dr. Salters is a proud graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) where he earned his Bachelors degree in Business Administration. In 2013, he earned his Doctorate degree in Adult Education and Human Resource Development from Florida International University.

His life motto is, “If I can help somebody as I pass along the way…my living will not be in vain.”

ROBERT HUNTERSEAGULL ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL

For the past five years, Tuesdays have been legendary for Seagull Alternative High students, thanks to Harlem Globetrotter Hall of Famer, Bobby “Zorro” Hunter who volunteers every week. Bobby is dedicated

to the community and enriching the lives of students.

Wearing many hats on campus, Bobby works hard to engage students. One week, Bobby assisted students in doing a live television broadcast on the importance of dressing for success. He chose this topic because, after five years on campus, he realized many students were failing to follow the school dress code. Bobby’s call for action did not go unnoticed by the students who listen to and respect him.A key ally in promoting student attendance and participation, Bobby’s presence on campus has student’s asking, “Tomorrow’s Tuesday, right? Is Bobby going to be here?” Through his countless efforts he has encouraged students to get involved and has helped to foster in students a desire to compete and win, not just in sports but in academics as well. Bobby is constantly working on behalf of each student, advocating for more scholarships, bringing in guest speakers such as millionaire Tamia Bather of Champion Water and funding field trips.

PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARDSSchools and District departments may nominate their outstanding business and community partners for the Partnership of the Year Award. A selection committee is established that generally consists of members of the Partners In Education Board of Directors and District staff. A set of criteria is established and each application is judged on the criteria and not in relation to each other. Criteria include: level of commitment; demonstrated support for school improvement and student achievement; and effective use of resources that provide meaningful program activities.

The following descriptions of these outstanding Partnerships of the Year allow only a small glimpse into the innovative and generous programs provided to schools and students by our business and community partners. It is apparent that these distinguished partners give not only much needed financial and material resources, but also contribute their expertise, experiences and hands-on assistance.

Our hearty congratulations and thank you to each of the Partnership of the Year Recipients and Nominees.

The mission of Partners In Education, Inc. (PIE) is to strengthen and enhance public education in Broward County Public Schools through the development of business and community partnerships.

For 32 years, PIE has recruited and nurtured business/community partnerships that have donated time, expertise and financial resources to schools. The District’s partners help students understand how academic learning is used in the workplace. They purchase books, school supplies, clothing and food for disadvantaged students and their families. They tutor and mentor students during the school day or serve as penpals to assist with writing skills.

In the 2013/14 school year, District partnerships provided approximately $5 million in added resources to schools, including volunteer time, in-kind and cash contributions.

Since 1999, PIE has been a part of the Parents, Business & Community Partnerships department of the Public Information Office and as of 2013 PIE is now a part of the Performance Management department in the Office of Strategic and Continuous Improvement. However, it continues its 501C3, not-for-profit status with a Board of Directors representing business, government, community and the District.

Griffin Elementary School and Cooper City High School with the City of Cooper CityCooper City donated $100,000 to be shared among the Cooper City Five Schools for new technology to optimize student learning. This donation is aligned with the District’s five- year plan. Representatives from the City also attend school events and sponsors the leadership government program, Ethics Seminars, bestow proclamations to teacher and employee of the year, retirees and student council. They also maintain Pioneer’s field and pay for all the schools to have a Broward Sheriff’s Officer and crossing guards. This totals to more than $600,000. This partnership is not only addressing academics, but also the safety and security of the Cooper City Five Schools.

With the $20,000 donation, each school is now able to purchase additional technology and refresh older computers to keep up with the online resources, computer-based assessments and the latest trends in technology. The donation will narrow the student–computer ratio and students will have more daily hands-on experiences with technology for 21st century learning. This will prepare them to be career and college ready in the competitive global workforce. A

SCHOOL-BASED PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEARDONATION OF CASH OR IN-KIND SUPPORT AWARD

total of 150 student laptops, five carts, five printers, and five teacher laptops will be purchased with the $100,000.

An additional $15,000 was donated to Cooper City High to support a “Feed the Hungry” community service project for the second year in a row, which will be about a $20,000 project at the end of spring. According to an article in DRW Magazine, Celebrating the board’s $100,000 commitment to school technology, School Board Member, Laurie Rich Levinson stated, “The Cooper City Commission’s passion and dedication to schools in the Cooper City School Zone is extraordinary. Partnerships like this are extremely rare and students will reap the benefits of having updated technology to enhance and optimize their learning.”

The City of Cooper City is called “Some Place Special” because the City has a vested interest in the schools and the community. Other municipalities can easily consider direct financial support to their schools for technology improvements and can use the model established at Cooper City. This is the school-city partnership taking it to the next level as they are truly committed to their belief in the importance of educating the youth of their city.

Whispering Pines School with theTown of DavieIn 2013, Whispering Pines partnered with the Town of Davie and developed a community-based instructional program. The goal of the partnership is to provide an on the job training program for special needs students. The landscaping students receive training in plant identification tree planting, propagating and other horticultural practices. This assists students with horticultural classes at school with a real life understanding of transferring skills learned in school to a real life job.

As a result of this partnership, students attended and were recognized by the Town Council for their participation in the Town of Davie receiving the Tree City USA Growth Award. In addition, the

SCHOOL-BASED PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR PROJECT-BASED LEARNING AWARD

Town of Davie won the Outstanding Urban Forestry Program/Large Community award/grant. A pilot paid internship program has been developed for two Whispering Pines students to work 240 hours at $10.11 per hour. These students will rotate through landscaping, custodial and maintenance. The partnership developed the Pilot Internship program with input from public works managers and employees as well as school personnel and can be replicated. The Town of Davie also includes Whispering Pines students in events throughout the school year including Arbor Day holiday and other special events. They have also continued to recognize individual students for their participation in the community-based instructional program as well as other events.

HANDY’s LIFE Program is made up of the Youth FORCE and School Is Cool Programs. The program provides after school tutoring, LIFE skills training, behavioral counseling, community service projects, and enrichment activities to 100 of our at-risk youth each school day from 2:30 - 6 p.m. Each student is given an Educational Life Plan, created by HANDY staff and Lauderdale Lakes Middle faculty and administration, which addresses their core academic and any behavioral modification needs and emergency care assistance, if needed.

The partnership with HANDY has produced many invaluable positive outcomes. Student absenteeism, tardiness, and overall suspensions have decreased by over 70%, while 91% of the students enrolled have decreased risk behaviors. There has been a 90% improvement in school grades and attendance; and 100% of students enrolled have avoided pregnancy and the use of alcohol and drugs. The HANDY staff has also improved the rapport and engagement of parents, directly impacting one of the school’s School Improvement Plan (SIP) goals.

SCHOOL-BASED PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEARDONATION OF TIME AWARD

The partnership is a best practice as it directly addresses the school’s need to create, foster and maintain a healthy school, home and community connection. The LIFE Program is structured to integrate school personnel, parents and community into the execution of activities. The partnership created the activity as a solution to the ongoing challenge of increasing student academic achievement, attendance and positive behaviors. HANDY has since launched the program at two additional sites.

Lauderdale Lakes Middle Principal, Mr. James Griffin, hosts informational sharing sessions with the school’s faculty to keep teachers and staff updated on the specifics and status of the program and it’s students. Lauderdale Lakes Middle faculty and staff increasingly refer new students to the program. Lauderdale Lakes Middle has provided ample onsite office space, storage and meeting space for HANDY staff to conduct student activities and daily operations and includes HANDY in all marketing materials, promoting the partnership publicly.

Autism in FlightPartners: JetBlue Airlines, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport,

The Transportation Security Administration

Summary of Partnership:In May 2014, more than 50 Broward County Public School students with Autism Spectrum Disorder participated in the second Annual Autism In Flight event at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.

With the purpose of simulating the experience of commercial airline travel, this experience was the culmination of a six-week curriculum which prepared students with autism for airport travel. On the day of the event, students and family members packed their bags and met at the airport to simulate ticketing, security clearance, gate procedures and boarding a JetBlue Airliner.

Since the program’s inception, JetBlue Airlines has partnered in this initiative. Their employees spend many volunteer hours ensuring that the day of departure goes smoothly. On departure day, JetBlue pilots, flight attendants and gate agents, developed a realistic flight experience. The students listened to boarding announcements, boarded the JetBlue aircraft, listened to inflight instructions and

experienced simulated takeoff and landing, while enjoying a JetBlue snack.

This was not an easy task, considering the amount of travelers that pass through each day. However, the employees of the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and the Transportation Security Administration worked hard to ensure the day ran smoothly from the time the students arrived to the time they left. They provided free parking, student escorts and training facilities for staff. This event was a tremendous success for our students and families. Many who were anxious about traveling with their children, are now able to travel without anxiety.

Essential to the success of the initiative are the Broward Sheriff’s Office; parents, Timothy Arnwine and Carmen Zaldivar; BCPS Exceptional Student Education Curriculum Supervisor, Gary Grigull; Silver Lakes Elementary Principal, Tammy Gilbert; BCPS School Board Member, Patricia Good; and Broward County Mayor, Barbara Sharief.
