    Sub: Request to consider my candidature for the project work (with joint collaboration

    under you and Prof R. K. Dhir of University of Dundee, Scotland) in the subject of

    ADVANCED CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY

    Sir,

    I R.S.Sravan Kumar a post graduate student in Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi want to work with you on the advance concrete technology. I had attended Prof

    R.K.Dhir seminar on Sustainable Development For Urban Re-Infrastructure and want

    to work on concrete with different type of performance criteria. Prof. Dhir talked of codal

    provision where lower strength concrete can be allowed in marine environment when flyash is used. FLY-Ash improves the durability is a well-established fact, but there are

    certain points that are not clear and might be worthy research topics.

    We must first request Prof. Dhir to share us the information about how the codes

    had quantified this enhancement in durability for fixing the minimum grades of concretein marine environment with and without FLY-Ash. What is the research background for

    this quantification?He also mentioned use of other waste material in concrete to enhance some

    properties of concrete addressing specific applications.

    I request you to write to Prof. Dhir and ask for additional information about theabove topics. Can you also ask him if he can kindly suggest us a research topic where

    Prof. Dhir and yourself can jointly guide my research topic.

    You had asked me to find out about the method for measurement of durability by

    accelerated tests:In our department, we have the following possibilities:

    a) Mercury Intrusion Porosimeter.b) Chloride Ingress tests by automatic tritrator.c) Measurement of corrosion by ACM field machine.

    d) Permeability test

    I wish to work in new applications of these new materials (any or multiple choice

    of Fly Ash, Silica Fume, recycled of Plastics, wood, etc.) where we can get enhanced

    performance, like durability/ light weight/ heat conductivity/sound proof etc. I want too

    either work in the qualification of durability due to fly ash or any of the other topicsaimed towards specific application.

    I am still a first year student and wish to start my work immediately so that we

    can complete the literature survey and procure the additional instruments immediately sothat I can work sincerely.

    Hence I request you to kindly consult Prof. Dhir and plan my thesis and also

    identify the instruments that need to be used. Can we use the water pressure method withrubber membrane that Prof. Dhir explained to measure permeability.
