Eaton ® Transmission Lubricant Maintenance Procedures Proper Lubrication is Important One of the keys to long and effective component life is proper lubrication. If your lubricant is not doing its job, other maintenance procedures will be ineffective in assuring vehicle performance. Vital components will be properly lubricated when the following maintenance procedures are closely followed: Inspect for oil leaks regularly Maintain proper oil level Change oil at the proper drain interval* Use correct lubricant grade and type Purchase an Eaton® approved synthetic lubricant for extended drain intervals For either new or rebuilt components, mineral lubricants must be changed within the first 10,000 kilometres of operation. When a transmission is factory-filled with Eaton ® approved synthetic lubricant, the initial drain interval is unnecessary. Mixing of Oil Types CAUTION: Never mix engine oils & gear oils in the same transmission. Engine oils and gear oils may not be compatible; mixing can cause break- down of the lubricant and affect component performance. When switching between types of lubricants, all areas of each affected component must be thoroughly drained. Aftermarket Additives Additives and friction modifiers must not be introduced. Proper Lubricationis ImportantOne of the keys to long and effectivecomponent life is proper lubrication. Ifyour lubricant is not doing its job, other maintenance procedures will beineffective in assuring vehicleperformance.

Vital components will be properlylubricated when the followingmaintenance procedures are closelyfollowed:

Inspect for oil leaks regularly Maintain proper oil level Change oil at the proper drain

    interval*

    Use correct lubricant gradeand type

Purchase an Eaton approvedsynthetic lubricant forextended drain intervals

For either new or rebuilt components, mineral lubricants must be changedwithin the first 10,000 kilometres ofoperation. When a transmission isfactory-filled with Eaton approvedsynthetic lubricant, the initialdrain interval is unnecessary.

Mixing of Oil TypesCAUTION: Never mix engine oils& gear oils in the sametransmission.

Engine oils and gear oils may not becompatible; mixing can cause break-down of the lubricant and affectcomponent performance. Whenswitching between types of lubricants, all areas of each affected componentmust be thoroughly drained.

Aftermarket AdditivesAdditives and friction modifiersmust not be introduced.

GENERAL SERVICE TRANSMISSION LUBRICANTS HEAVY DUTY ENGINE OIL OR AUTOMOTIVE GEAR OIL**

*Oil analysis is required to determine exact oil change interval which can vary depending on application.

**Not approved for automated transmissions or manual transmissions above 1850 lbs.ft. If oil filter fitted, the filter should be changed at every oil change interval or if visually damaged/rusted.

    Eaton Approved Synthetic Oil

Proper TransmissionLubrication LevelMake sure transmission oil is level withthe bottom of the fill opening. Being ableto reach the oil with your finger does notmean the oil is at the proper level. (Onheavy duty transmissions, one inch(25.4mm) equals about 4.5 litres of oil.)

If the transmission operating angle ismore than 12 degrees, improperlubrication can occur. The operating angleis the transmission mounting angle in thechassis plus the grade (expressed indegrees).Anytime the transmission operating angleof 12 degrees is exceeded for an extendedperiod of time, the transmission must beequipped with an oil pump or cooler kit toensure proper lubrication.

Regular Oil ChangesDrain the transmission while oil is warm.Clean housing around fill plug andremove plug from housing side. Fill thetransmission to the level of the fillopening. The exact amount of oil dependson the transmission inclination andmodel. Do not over-fill. Clean plug beforereinstalling.

    Regular InspectionRecommended transmission lubricationinspection intervals:

    HIGHWAY APPLICATIONS:

Check fluid levels and inspect forleaks every 20,000 kilometres.

    ON-OFF HIGHWAY APPLICATIONS:

Check fluid level and inspect for leaksevery 50 hours.

Operating TemperaturesTransmissions must not be operated attemperatures above 120C.

In all cases, cooler must havesufficient capacity to maintain oiltemperatures below 120C atworst case operating conditions.

Operation at temperatures above 120Ccauses loaded gear tooth temperatures toexceed 170C which will ultimatelydestroy the heat treatment of the gears. While occasional short termtemperatures above 120C may notcause damage, it should be regarded asa warning of inadequate cooling. If theelevated temperature is associated withan unusual operating condition that willrecur, a cooler should be added, or thecapacity of the existing systemincreased. The following conditions in anycombination can cause operatingtemperatures over 120C: Operating consistently at slower

speeds. High ambient temperatures. Restricted air flow around

transmission and cooler. High horsepower.Transmission coolers must be used toreduce operating temperatures when theabove conditions are encountered.

    Oil Cooler ChartTransmission Oil Coolers are:Recommended:With engines of 350 H.P. (265 kW) and above.Required:With engines 399 H.P. (300 kW) and above and GCMs over 40 tonnes.With engines 399 H.P. (300 kW) and above and 1400 lbs. ft (1900 Nm).With engines 450 H.P. (335) and above.With engines 1500 lbs. ft (2030 Nm) and above.
