Sichuan was hit by another great earthquake, though not as massive as the one five years ago, still resulting in a death toll of 200, countless injuries and people turned homeless. Many people feel so sorry about this ill-fated province and are touched to pour in support from all around.

However, not very encouraging response came from Hong Kong people, as one would expect from their usual overwhelming suppor t on prev ious s imi lar occurrence in China. In the Wenchuan ear thquake, major ity of the rescue donation raised around the globe came from Hong Kong, as people were keen to support the needs of their mother country. As China now being the world s second largest economy entity through rapid growth over the past few years, relatively economic dependence on Hong Kong has largely diminished. Moreover, political issues and concerns caused by mainlanders going into Hong Kong have built up tension in the China-Hong Kong relation. So many Hong Kong people star t to question on the genuine need to provide financial support to such a wealthy government of great possession for the aid purpose, while risking much of the donation would end up in personal account through corruption.

I think the fund raising of suppor t aid to Sichuan people should not be blocked off because of politic and corruption in China; all overseas Chinese who are touched by the ruined victims should just act accordingly. Yet we must be selective and responsible in ensuring all donations made must be channeled into aid and rebuilding works in whole. Chinese officials do not have a good reputation in handling disaster fund; so fund raisers must work through scrutinized organisation in handling and delivering all aid resources.

The Ch inese gove r nment shou ld t ake note o f outsiders response to this round of rescue aid fund raising for tackling corruption in official aid organisations so as to ease the mind of those passionate donors.
