Whether this is your familys first expatriation or your family is seasoned in country-hopping, one of the most important considerations when relocating is your chil-drens schooling. Luckily, Shanghai offers a wide and expanding range of high quality

educational options to suit the needs of all families, some of which you may not have en-

countered before. And no matter how experienced you are in moving around the world, it

always helps to have some guidance to direct your early enquiries.

Shanghai Familys annual School Directory, now in its fourth year, provides parents with

an invaluable reference guide to Shanghais schools, covering toddler daycare to post-

    graduate study options.

The directory has been thoughtfully divided into five sections: international schools, lo-

cal schools with international divisions, preschools and kindergartens, further education

and enrichment programs. Our easy-to-use maps covering Puxi and Pudong will help you

navigate the location of international schools and their proximity to popular expatriate

    residential areas.

To give you an overview of Shanghais school system, Jeffry Stubbs, chairman of the

Shanghai International Schools Association, answers some frequently asked questions

about the international schools here, while Kirsty Eccleston looks at what you need to

consider if you are contemplating the local schools option for your child, and Abbie Pu-

marejo finds out how parents can help their children transition to a new school and life.

For many families moving to Shang-hai, this is their first experience with international schooling, and it can seem

a bit alien. Here, Jeffry Stubbs, the Chair-

man of the Shanghai International Schools

    Association (SISA) and Superintendent of

    Shanghai Community International School

(SCIS), answers some of the most frequent-

ly asked questions posed by parents.

    Q. Whats the difference between an inter-

national school and a local school?

International schools in China are licensed

for expatriate children. They are usually

tuition-driven private schools, and are not

required to follow Chinese public school

curriculum. Most are accredited by a repu-

table organization such as WASC, NEASC,

or CIS. Most international schools in China

    are well-resourced, have smaller student-

teacher rat ios , a nd of fer access to el ite

college preparatory programs, such as the

Advanced Placement or IB Diploma Pro-

gramme. They are most often staffed with

foreign-hired teachers, and have English or

another foreign language as the medium

of instruction. Only children with foreign

passports, as well as children from Hong

Kong, Macau or Taiwan may attend inter-

    national schools.

    Q. What does it mean when a school is a

local school with an international stream

    or division?

If a local school has a license for an interna-

    International Schools:Your Questions Answered

tional division, then it may enrol both local

and expatriate children. They usually offer

many of the features of a full international

school, though often it is less expensive

    and less diverse.

    Q. What admissions criteria are usually

    required by international schools?

    Ad m i s s ion s c r ite r i a w i l l v a r y sl i g ht ly,

    w it h o n ly s o m e s c h o o l s re q u i r i n g a n

    exam. Most international schools require

students to prov ide academ ic/conduct

records from previous institutions and an

ability to study in the target language of the

school. Some may also require additional

admission tests to be taken and references

    from previous teachers.

    Q. Is it advisable for families to apply to

    more than one school?

W hile this is really up to the individual

    f a m i l y, m o s t re p u t a b l e i n t e r n a t i o n a l

schools in Shanghai are impacted at cer-

tain grade levels. Applications usually en-

tail a fee to cover the administrative cost,

but families should not equate application

with acceptance. It is advisable to visit a

number of schools and apply to your fa-

vorites. Some schools have waiting lists for

  • 12 | Find more information at www.shfamily.com/education

certain grades and deadlines during the

    year.

    Q. Do I need a valid China visa before I can

    apply to an international school?

No, not at t he p oi nt of appl ic at ion , but

international schools will be required to

demonstrate copies of valid visas and resi-

dent permits for the same city (or proof of

    processing) for all enrolled students.

    Q. Why are the fees so high?

Small class sizes, large and attractive cam-

puses, a large number of international staff

(all of whom get housing, flights and other

benefits as well as a Western salary, and

often tax support), and lots of educational

resources; all of these add to the expense.

Attracting foreign experts to Shanghai gen-

erates keen competition in any field.

    Q. Do international schools offer financial

aid options to assist families with school

    tuition fees?

A s tuition funding drives most interna-

tional schools, few offer extensive financial

assistance options. Some schools will have

small budgets to offer limited financial as-

sistance based on need, and some will offer

    merit-based scholarships. Schools offering

major tuition discounts should be consid-

    ered cautiously.

    Q. When my child finishes high school,

will he/she have qualifications to get him/

her into a Western college or university?

    International schools provide internation-

ally recognized programs which allow a

student to access universities in a wide

    ra n ge of cou nt r ie s . Mo s t i nte r n at ion a l

    s c ho ol s i n S h a n g h a i of fe r t he A P or I B

Diploma, which are the most recognized

    programs worldwide.

    Q. What policies do schools have in place

to protect children against air pollution?

Most international schools have air quality

guidelines that establish how the school

and its personnel will respond when the

outdoor air quality is poor. These guide-

lines will establish how air quality will be

measured and which index will be applied

in determining a response, especially with

regard to planned outdoor activities, re -

cess, PE classes, and after school sports or

activities. Most use the US EPA air quality

index or the Chinese index. SISA schools

have been very collaborative in sharing

their air quality guidelines and efforts to

keep kids safe in this regard.

    Q. Do international schools follow a com-

mon school meals policy to ensure that

    they are nutritious?

In my experience, all schools have good

cafeterias and are trying to provide stu-

    de nt s w it h he a lt hy opt ion s . Mo s t out-

source their cafeteria services, while a few

cater in-house. Some schools consider the

cafeteria to be an important learning space,

and work closely with food providers in

    extending the educational program, espe-

cially as relating to nutrition and health, to

    the cafeteria.

    Q. How safe are the school bus services?

Are they run by the city council or the

    schools themselves?

School buses a re ver y sa fe a nd usua lly

lea sed by i nter nat iona l school s f rom a

licensed bus company. Some schools have

their own buses. Buses usually have an

adult monitor in addition to the driver.

    Q. Does my child have to study Chinese?

In most schools you dont have to study

Mandarin, though studying a second lan-

guage is usually part of the curriculum.

    Many international schools promote Chi-

nese culture and language, but it is only

    compulsory in some schools.

    Q. Do students get to interact with kids

    from other schools through inter-school

    activities like sport, debate, etc?

    Inter-school activities are very important

    a nd a l l i nter nat iona l scho ol s r u n s uch

programs. This is often based on sport, but

there are a huge number of other activities,

    such as environmental, academic, commu-

nity, and service programs. Some schools

    a l s o wo rk w it h l o c a l s c h o o l s to b u i l d

    stronger community relations.

    Q. Do international schools require stu-

dents to be vaccinated against certain

    diseases before joining?

    Vacc i nat ion s a re not re qu i re d to e nte r

China. However, many schools require stu-

dents to have certain vaccinations before

    enrolment. Most common vaccinations

are available at a number of clinics or hos-

    pitals in China.

The local schooling option is a great way to fully immerse your child in Chinese culture and is the best and fastest way to

    improve their Chinese language abilities.

American Melanie Ham, founder of com-

munity group Shanghai Mamas, has a 9-year-

old daughter who has been studying in the

international division of local school Aiju for

four years. She has been very happy and

[has] thrived in the school. Melanie explains

that for her bi-cultural family (her husband is

Chinese), she wanted her children to be cul-

    tural chameleons, completely comfortable

in China and in the USA. Part of achieving

this goal involved immersion into the local

school experience in the early years.

Melanie explains that the school not only

helped her daughter gain strong Math in-

struction and Chinese language but it also

rewarded her with the experience of wear-

ing the hong ling jing (little red scarf), learning

how to sit up straight and speak with rever-

ence and respect to her teachers, and learn-

ing Chinese playground games, such as Go.

Local schooling can be an advantageous

option if you are overseas Chinese, from a

bilingual family or intend to stay in China or

Going LocalOver the last few years, more local schools have opened up international divisions, allowing more expatriated families the opportunity to send their children to study in a more local setting. Kirsty Eccleston takes a look at some things you need to consider if you want to go down this route.

the Asia Pacific region medium to long term.

If this is likely to be a short-term expatriation,

local schools may not be ideal depending on

    your childs Chinese language abilities.

For families with younger children, entry at

pre- or primary school can make for an easier

transition as they are more adaptable and the

immersion environments of local and bi-

lingual schools offer the fastest way for your

    children to learn Mandarin.

If you have older children, your selection of

school may depend on the curriculum your

child is currently studying and whether this

is offered in a local schools international

division. If not, you need to consider whether

or not the school offers internationally rec-

    ognized qualifications, taking into account

whether these are transferable for future

    education opportunities outside of China.

You also need to bear in mind that enrolling

in a local school will require a big adjustment

and time investment due to the language

    and academic demands, culture differences

    and teaching methodologies.

Another reason why families consider the lo-

cal school option is cost. While many families

  • 18 | Find more information at www.shfamily.com/education

Sagas storyWhile local schools may offer a better option for the early years or for students from Chinese

or bilingual backgrounds, older children of non-Chinese backgrounds can also benefit from

local schooling. Saga Ringmar, a 17-year-old Swedish-American, studied at Nanyang Model

High School () in Shanghai from 2011- 2013 and is now finishing high school in Sweden. Here Saga shares her experience with us.

The main reason to go to a local school is for the language. Granted, I was beyond the begin-

ner level, but before starting Nanmo I could barely have a conversation. After starting school, it

was like being born all over again. I was learning as fast as a newborn. In just two years, I could

make jokes and have conversations, and I became part of the crowd. My life WAS Chinese. My

best friends were Chinese, my social life was Chinese, and my schedule was Chinese. If you

want a deep level of integration, a local school is the only way you can live that kind of life. I

loved that life it became a part of my identity.

receive full coverage of tuition fees as part of

their relocation package, that is not the case

for everyone. Some families only receive a

contribution to school fees, while others have

to pay entirely out of their own pocket. Local

schools are the most cost-effective option if

you are funding the education yourself.

Shanghai schools have a strong reputation in

education, having recently been ranked the

top education system in the world (again) in

the OECDs PISA tests (Programme for Inter-

national Student Assessment), scoring top in

Math, Reading and Science. No surprise then,

that Melanie believes local school has given

her daughter very good study habits, time

management skills and a competitive desire

to work hard at academics. Having said that,

    Chinese educational philosophies and teach-

ing practices differ greatly from that in the

West. Teachers tend to use rote learning, and

there is less encouragement for classroom

participation but more emphasis on compe-

tition. Examinations in local schools can be

grueling. If you dont have a native Chinese

speaker in the family, you will probably need

to hire a good tutor to help your child adjust

to and maintain the Mandarin and academic

level required to keep up with the workload.

Melanie agrees. Its also worth noting that lo-

cal schools assess students based on ability

over age, so if your child is not meeting the

expectations of their grade level, they may

be held back a year or two.

While Melanie is often amazed how the teach-

ers can motivate, encourage and instruct

the kids to meet such high levels of achieve-

ment, she is also beginning to question if her

daughter has aged out of the system and feels

it might be time to transfer her to an interna-

tional educational environment in the next

year or two to ensure her daughter doesnt

fall back in English and to better support her

daughters love of writing. As when looking at

any school, it is important to see whats avail-

able in terms of facilities and extra-curricular

programs. For instance, there maybe less em-

phasis on sport and PE, but more focus on the

arts and music. In the end, finding the best fit

for your familys needs should ensure a great

    school experience.

  • 19

There are definitely negatives in local school.

For example, nothing was easy. Language was

a struggle, and even after I made friends, I still

didnt feel 100% comfortable. Speaking became

easier, but my social life couldnt compare with

being in an English-speaking school. School-

work was tough, too. I had to assume the role of a

class idiot during my two years in Nanmo (even

though Im a top student in English-speaking

schools) because its impossible to compete at their pace when the language is so new.

I didnt graduate from Nanmo. This is important because theres no guarantee that the diplo-

ma from my new school will be enough for me to get into universities abroad. Forgetting the

bureaucratic aspect though, universities want students who have a good sense of their own

identity. I learned a lot about myself and how much Im able to cope beyond my comfort zone.

If you are considering a local school, your attitude is key. A local school can be life-changing

if youre determined to become Chinese and to change your views on education, language

and culture. I used to stand in the Metro after school at rush hour, crushed between a group

of school friends, laughing and joking in Chinese. It may sound silly, but this made me so im-

    mensely happy.

    From IGCSEto IB and Beyond

Helping your child adjust to a new school

anywhere can be a challenge. As parents,

we want our children to move easily into

a new situation, with the least amount of

stress and worry possible. A new school

may also mean a new city, new language

and new culture. The international school

community in Shanghai can be welcoming,

but the adjustment period will vary from

child to child. Many factors, including your

    childs age, preferences, school environ-

ment and your own attitudes all contribute

to how seamlessly your child will adjust to

    their new school.

Realistic expectationsAccording to Community Center Shanghai

(CCS) counselor Andrea Smallen, One of the

hardest parts of transitioning to a new school

or environment is finding a space where we

feel like we belong. Often with a move, we do

not know what to expect, which makes the

    transition that much harder.

A+ Moving to one of the world's largest cities is a wonderful adventure for kids, but it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Abbie Pumarejo shares some helpful ways to make the grade when adjusting to a new school, new friends, and a new life in Shanghai.

    Open communication, explaining the need

    for t he move a nd i nvolv i n g t he ch i ld i n

the school selection process all help give

a sense of security. If possible, visit several

schools with your children. Do research

online and take your childs opinions into

    consideration before deciding.

When choosing a school, allowing your

    ch i ld to be pa r t of t he process w i l l help

them feel more in control of their new en-

vironment and the decisions around it. It

is, after all, where they will be spending the

majority of their time. If they feel they are

able to exercise some control over this, it

will help them feel more secure and better

able to adjust, rather than it being forced on

    them, advises Andrea.

Give it timeAlthough we may want everything to be A-Ok

from the very beginning, there are bound to

be moments when the transition is anything

    Adjustment

but smooth. Giving your child time to adapt is

as important as knowing when to step in and

    offer more concrete support.

Firstly, allow some time to adjust, for both

parents and child. It takes time to settle in,

longer for some than for others. However, re-

gardless of age, if you see your child is strug-

gling, show your understanding that making

such a change is hard. Most importantly,

allow for communication, and for your childs

feelings to be heard and validated.

Jessica Hrnell, mother of two daughters,

studying in Grades 4 and 7 at Shanghai Com-

munity International School, shares her fam-

ilys recent moving experience. We spent

time together and talked a lot at home about

everything new that had happened each day.

We found fun places to visit during weekends

    and sampled new foods.

However, like with many other families, there

were also bumps along the way. It was impor-

tant for us as parents to be positive so we tried

to be very patient and tolerant when our girls

had their ups and downs - and we listened.

We reminded our girls how it had been for

kids at their old school when they were new

and how our girls had helped them adjust to

their new school in the Netherlands.

As parents, one of the essential roles we play

is setting the tone for our childrens attitudes

with our own. Andrea suggests, Talk, talk,

and talk. Let your kids know you are available

and that you are there to support them.

By validating your childs feelings about

school, both negative and positive, you help

them through the period of adjustment and

prepare for anticipated difficulties. Being al-

lowed to express feelings is an important step

    in the transitional process.

Can I stay home today? Andrea assures parents, It is not uncommon

    for children to unconsciously internalize

their distress, which can then manifest itself

in a physical way, with complaints of stom-

ach aches, nausea, headaches or digestion

difficulties on school days. Not surprisingly, if

allowed to stay home, the child often shows a

    quick recovery.

These behaviors are seen in both younger

and older children. More seriously, some chil-

dren may begin to display a lack of interest in

    school activities; difficulties with homework;

    increased sibling rivalry; trouble making

    friends; becoming more withdrawn, isolating

themselves, mood swings, or school refusal.

In addition, teenagers may begin to show

signs of rebellion, acting out more than usual,

    or displaying increased aggression towards

    others, themselves and parents.

Zack Beck Gross, a licensed clinical social
