Besides witnessing the School conferring an Honorary Professorship on Prof. Cheng Siwei, the banquet also saw the launch of the book “HKBU MBA China Alumni Interview Series” published by the MBA (China) Alumni Association and the Guangdong Provincial Publishing Group to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the China MBA programme.

The book features interviews with Prof. Albert Chan, Prof. Stephen

Cheung, Prof. Allan Chan (Associate Dean of Business) and successful alumni of the China MBA programme. The editorial committee devoted two months to interviewing the alumni in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dalian and Nanjing.

Mr. Luo Gang, Chairman of the MBA (China) Alumni Association, said: “Though this book may not be considered a masterpiece, the editorial committee gained a great deal of insights from all the interviews because the alumni were eager to share their management philosophies with us. Their perseverance and passion in life impressed us all.”

Prof. Cheng brought the evening to its climax speaking on “The Future of Management Science in China”. “Chinese enterprises should incorporate western management concepts with traditional Chinese culture and transform these concepts into new management practices that fit the Chinese context,” he said. He also suggested that management should serve not only enterprises, but society as well. The address was followed by a question and answer session during which he discussed with the alumni topics such as the outlook for the stock market and the property industry in China.

The School of Business held a media session on December 5 during which Prof. Stephen Cheung,

Dean of Business, and Dr. Peter Lau, Associate Dean of Business, introduced the four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) (BBA) programme. The introduction covered the programme’s broad-based admission mode, its course characteristics, the Young Executives Development Scheme and the admission scholarship scheme.

The four-year programme will incorporate elements of business ethics and corporate social responsibility, in keeping with the School’s vision and mission and the strategic theme of corporate sustainability. “Students will have the option of graduating with a double concentration, while service-learning elements will also be embedded in the programme to help students apply their

business knowledge to contribute to society by helping non-profit organisations in their daily operations and undertaking service trips to mainland cities. In addition, students are required to complete an honours project, which is unique in Hong Kong’s business undergraduate studies,” Prof. Cheung said.

Since 2008, the School has adopted a broad-based admission mode, making it one of the pioneers in Hong Kong in this field. Students are assigned their concentrations only after the first year of study. In 2010’s intake, more than 95 per cent of the students were assigned to either their first or second concentration preference.

Prof. Cheung said: “For the coming cohort of four-year degree students we will strive to be even more flexible to cater to their needs.” Concentration assignments are based on students’ Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examination result, their accumulated grade point average in the first year’s study, their non-academic achievements and their concentration preferences.

The School has also established the Young Executives Development Scheme to nurture all-round business leaders. “The scheme integrates developmental workshops, overseas exchanges, internship programmes, service learning programmes and a student ambassador programme. Last

BBA students triumph in the Corporate Governance Paper Competition Three BBA students beat 28 teams from local universities to clinch the championship at the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS) Corporate Governance Paper Competition in October. They are Ms. Leung Wing-yan and Mr. Wong Kwong-fat (Human Resources Management, year three) and Mr. Lui Yiu-lim (Applied Economics, year three). The winning team was awarded HK$10,000 and will have their winning paper published in CSJ, the monthly journal of the HKICS.

“I think one of the keys to our success is team spirit. We made good use of our different academic backgrounds, did a lot of research and tactically applied what we learnt from the classroom,” said Yiu-lim. “Our paper examined the regulations and characteristics of several listed companies to look for flaws in their corporate governance. Then we made a number of recommendations, including setting up a compliance unit and changing the remuneration structure through cutting down bonuses and other means.”

The competition aimed to raise awareness of the importance of good governance in all areas of every business. Each participating team was required to submit a paper of not more than 5,000 words on the theme “Corporate Governance – Best Practice versus Practicality”. The six finalist teams were invited to present their papers on the day of competition.

HKBU team wins Bronze in the IIBD Case CompetitionA team of four students from our School won the Bronze medal in the Wing Lung Bank International Institute for Business Development (IIBD) Case Competition in November. The students are Ms. Kathryn Hung (BBA Marketing, year three), Mr. Jonathan Cheong (BCom Marketing, year three), Mr. Keith Har (BCom Marketing, year three) and Mr. Frankie Lee (BBA Finance, year two). The panel of judges commended the team for producing a comprehensive analysis of the case they were assigned. Jonathan also brought home the Best Presenter award.

“We had really strong rivals, so we were really surprised that we won the bronze medal,” Kathryn said. “Much of the credit goes to Ms. Susanna Chui, Mr. Lam Sui-wah, Dr. Henry Fock and many other teachers from the School who coached us for the past six months and taught us essential skills and strategies for our success.”

“I was really taken aback about winning the Best Presenter award because some of the other competitors are native English speakers and I wasn’t particularly confident when presenting in English, which is my second language,” Jonathan said. “I need to thank all the teachers for their efforts in guiding me through the many aspects of a good presentation.”

The competition was hosted by the IIBD and the Chinese Businesses Case Research Centre of our School. A total of 33 teams from 15 countries entered the competition on the theme “Value Creation through Branding”. The five finalist teams were

from HKBU, Ateneo de Manila University from the Philippines (the silver medallists), Windesheim University of Applied Sciences from the Netherlands, University of Prince Edward Island from Canada (the gold medallists) and Baylor University from the US.

BCom HRM student wins first prize in the Personnel Management Club Scholarship Competition

Mr. Nathaniel Wong, a year-three student in the Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources Management (BCom HRM) programme, won the first prize in the Personnel Management Club (PMC) Scholarship Competition in January. He won a HK$4,000 scholarship and also a year-long student membership of the PMC.

Nathaniel said that the competition had broadened his experience in a competitive setting and helped him strike a good balance between management theories and practical issues. “I found it most difficult to analyse the work cultures and practices in Hong Kong and mainland China, as currently not much research is available in this area,” Nathaniel added. “I need to thank Prof. Randy Chiu and Dr. Felix Yip who guided me all the way through, and especially Mr. Lam Sui-wah who shared with me loads of insights and prepared me well for the presentation.”

The competition is organised annually by the Hong Kong Management Association. It is open to full-time, final-year undergraduates majoring in HRM at local universities. This year’s competitors were required to submit an essay on “The Gateway to Corporate Success: How to Achieve Synergy with Hong Kong and Mainland HR Capital under Different Work Cultures and Practices” and to make a presentation in English to a panel of judges comprising professors from the participating universities and members of the PMC.

BCom Marketing kicks off the Young Marketers for Social Enterprise project The Department of Marketing held a kick-off ceremony for the Young Marketers for Social Enterprise (YMSE) project on the Shek Mun Campus on September 28. Ms. Marianna Tsang, President of the HKBU Century Club, and Mr. Joey Wan, Marketing Director of the Peter F. Drucker Academy, were invited as the guests of honour to share insights with the students. Prof. Siu Wai-sum, Director of the Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing (BCom Marketing) programme, said “The YMSE project aims to provide BCom Marketing students with an opportunity to acquire real-life, hands-on business experience and engage in activities that revolve around an organisation’s marketing function.”

“The HKBU Century Club, an alumni association of the University, has granted the project HK$30,000 in sponsorship which will be used to assist student participants in the form of traveling allowances. Not only will the students earn practical experience from their host organisations, they will also earn three credit units in completing the project. More importantly, the project gives participants a chance to serve our community and to be inspired by the passion of social entrepreneurs,” added Prof. Siu.

The “mindXchange” student forum On November 23, more than 60 students participated in the “mindXchange” student forum. Launched by the School in 2010, “mindXchange” is an initiative that promotes students’ active participation and the free exchange of ideas on timely topics related to sustainability, corporate social responsibility and business ethics.

During the two-hour forum, two panels composed of undergraduate and graduate students from different programmes argued for and against the motion that “NGOs/NPOs are the main drivers of CSR advancement today.” Members of the audience also participated in the exchange of ideas and posed thought-provoking questions to the panelists.

The fate of the panelists ultimately lay in the hands of the audience, as the winning team was determined by an audience vote. The panel which argued for the motion won and was presented a cash prize of HK$4,000, while the other panel received a HK$2,000 consolation prize.

The “A-team” returns for BBA students The School has partnered with AIESEC, the world’s largest youth-run organisation active in over 107 countries and territories, and recruited five interns—also known as the “A-team”—as teaching assistants to provide students in the Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) (BBA) programme with opportunities to enhance their communication skills in English through tutorials, workshops and interaction with native speakers. The team, composed of Ms. Nadiyka Pyzik, Mr. Artem Milkov, Ms. Tiffany Leung, Mr. Ti Tran and Ms. Carisse Eusebio, hosts a series of innovative activities—Chit Chat Circles, “mindXchange” student forums, résumé and cover letter workshops, and job interview workshops—that aim to help BBA students hone their public speaking and writing skills in English.

The team has also initiated the Career Development in English certification programme. Students who have completed a designated number of activities will receive a certificate which they can add to their CV.

Our School is launching two new taught postgraduate programmes in the 2012/13 academic year: a Master of Science in Business Management (MScBM) and a Master of Accountancy (MAcc).

The MScBM programme will be offered both full-time and part-time. It is designed to serve the needs of fresh graduates who aspire to a business career and also those of potential business leaders early in their careers, imparting master-level knowledge and assisting them in acquiring skills needed in business and general management. The programme integrates a broad spectrum of courses with a series of “live-learning” activities, from seminars and workshops to corporate visits and international exchanges.

The MAcc programme, also offered both full-time and part-time, is designed for non-accounting graduates who intend to pursue an accounting career. It will also benefit those currently working in non-accounting fields who wish to receive a thorough education in the principles and practice of

accounting. It will focus on substantive and operational knowledge, as well as the skills and competencies of accounting practitioners. The first part of the programme will be a conversion programme accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

These and all our other taught postgraduate programmes are now open for applications. For more details, please visit www.hkbu.edu.hk/buspg.
