It’s the Lilyfontein Tomato Trot’s 21st birthday on Febru-ary 6 next year and as we celebrate this milestone, we say goodbye to TFM, our naming sponsor for seven years. We

would like to thank TFM as with their help we have man-aged to grow the event from 507 participants to over 2500 in 2015.

Hayden McLaren, Director at TFM explains: “After seven years of happy association with the Tomato Trot, we have unfortunately decided not to sponsor next year’s event. TFM has enjoyed enormous coverage and publicity during our years of sponsorship as a result of the excellent media cover-age leading up to the event each year. The school always ensured that as a sponsor we were well catered for and kept up-to-date with every detail”.

While this is a sad parting, it does open up an exciting opportunity for companies looking to associate themselves with this well known, popular running and cycling event.

The Tomato Trot 15km run/walk is renowned as a fantastic

warm-up race for the Discovery Surfers Challenge with par-ticipants in running and cycling events enjoying challenging yet scenic routes through tomato and cattle farms in the Brakfontein area of East London.

It involves a whole day of activities at Lilyfontein School including a beer tent and food and entertainment for the kids. It is truly considered a family event. While the number of participants was over 2500 in 2015, the overall attendance would have been in excess of 5000 people as families take the day out to enjoy the beautiful country surroundings.

If your company has an interest in improving the health of our community or promoting the East London area or has any products or services for fitness fanatics, then perhaps this is your opportunity.

The event incorporates a 15km run/walk and 5km fun run sanctioned by Border Athletics and 55km, 35km, 15km & 8km cycle routes sanctioned by Cycling SA.

If you would be interested in receiving a sponsorship proposal, please do not hesitate to contact Caroline Kruger on 043 737 4258 or [email protected]

For Stirling High School surfer Luke Malherbe, travelling to California for the World Junior Surf Champs late last month was a dream come true.

The blonde-headed youngster over seven days, competing against the best in the U16 division, ended 21st overall out of 110 competitors while the South African team placed seventh out of 36 countries.

“The first few days the weather was good but then the waves got bad due to strong off-shore winds,’’ said Luke.

He added: “Representing South Africa meant so much to me. Understandably the standard was very high and would like to thank my school and sponsors for their brilliant support.’’

Luke said he could not notice how clean the beaches were which were always full of people.

“There were also palm trees everywhere as well as so many pelicans which were not frightened of us. I especially liked the restaurants and just loved the hamburgers and milkshakes they served,’’ he added.

Of the many nationalities, he said the Costa Ricans and Brits proved very friendly but the Americans came across as rather arrogant.

Next up for Luke was the Buccaneers Surf Classic followed by the Border Closed event.

Luke said he couldn’t wait.

Taryn Emslie of Hudson Primary is one very talented young lady.

Taryn, in Grade 7, who has earned her Border colours at U13 level in hockey, tennis and squash this year said she didn’t think it was possible.

“I only started playing squash last year after tagging along to watch my dad (Peter) play. One day he said I should try the game and I did, never thinking I would make Border.’’

The hockey inter-provincial was staged in Pietermaritzburg while the tennis and squash events were held in Bloemfontein with Taryn saying she had fun at all three.

“We didn’t do too well at hockey but the squash team did well to finish fourth. The nice thing about being good at sport is one gets to meet a lot of new people and make new friends,’’ she said.

Asked where she inherited her talent from, Taryn said her dad.“My dad is an all-rounder while my mom (Sandra) was a good

swimmer but is more academically inclined.’’Taryn recently participated in recent in-door hockey trials

where she made the regional A team which travels to a tourna-ment in Durban in December.

In addition, she was included in the Border water polo squad but was forced to withdraw due to the in-door hockey trials.

Asked about her studies, Taryn admitted she didn’t have much time but her dad has insisted on her finding a balance.

Keep at it Taryn.

There were cheers all round when the Caltex-sponsored Border Sevens team excelled at a recent inter-provincial. The boys finished fifth out of 16 teams, losing only one game to Western Province and won the Plate trophy. The top five placements were Valke, Lions, Bull Bulls ,WP, Border and Boland. There’s hope some of the Border team will make the SA side. The team carried the Border flag high and proved to the larger regions that Border, as small as it is, is a force to be reckoned with. The Border team under head coach Antonie Barnard was Sikolise Nanto (George Randall Primary), Silamlele Zweni (Dale), Mbasa Nkonki (Cambridge), Joshua van Vreden (Selborne), Theuns Jansen van Rensburg (Selbone), Matthew Tonkin (Selborne), Lwanga Bongco (George Randall Primary), Sihlalo Benge (QNJ), Chad Greatz (Selborne), Bamanye Mahela (QNJ), Sandisile Mtebele (QNJ), Matthew Pitchard (Hudson).

When it comes to music, Daniel Brodie is a pianist of note with a promising future.

His talent is such that Stirling High School headmaster Charles Forster remarked: “He’s a fabulous pianist who has brought so much pride to the school.’’

Daniel, in Grade 9, started playing the piano aged 8 when at Stirling Pri-mary. He also plays the flute and started to learn the clarinet this year but admits the piano is his favourite.

One would assume he comes from a musical family but says Daniel: That’s the strange thing, no family members are into music so my talent is quiet astonishing.’’

A classical pianist, Daniel’s recitals date back to the 1600’s to the 1930’s and he prefers to play from memory. Now that’s also astonishing.

“Is it difficult to play the piano?’’ I ask.Replied Daniel: “With enough discipline anyone can learn to play. You

just have to set your mind to doing it.’’He’s currently in Grade 9 and on leaving school Daniel wants to study

music and go on to have a performing career or lecturing.Among his many achievements winning trophies at the East London

Music Eisteddfod for the most outstanding pianist 2014 and most prom-ising pianist 2015.

He won third place in the Grahamstown National Music festival this year. Also this year was selected to participate in the Atterbury National Piano Competition.

He has also attended numerous master classes in piano with profes-sors around the country which include Catherine Foxcroft and Albie van Schalkwyk and Dr Liezl Maret-Jacobs.

This is what Beaconhurst Primary’s sports co-ordinator Jackie van Rensburg had to say about their annual Kingfisher Festival held

recently. We had 20 schools that entered teams in the

hockey, netball and rugby competitions. A big thank you to all the pupils and coaches who joined us on the day to make this festival the big-gest in East London.

A special thank you to all our loyal sponsors for making it possible for us to give every player and coach a T-shirt, goodie bag, snack and water bottle.

To the coaches, without all your hard work and commitment, this day would not have been pos-sible.

Thank you to the Pro Coaches for providing the referees and umpires. You helped us to make it a memorable day for every player. The Beaconhurst team has been phenomenal in organising and preparing this event.

Please diarise August 6, 2016 for our next fun filled Kingfisher Festival.

Two Kingsridge Primary School tennis players Sinazo Guwa and Simanye Wakashe, both in Grade 7, are off to Dirban this month to represent the Eastern Cape at

the U13 inter-provincial in Pretoria. It’s the first time both will be playing provincial tennis

and the pair are terribly excited.“I started tennis in Grade 1 and I really love the game.

I think my return volley is the best part of my game and I train every day under coach David Kempele except for Friday’s,’’ Sinazo said.

Her favourite tennis player? Li Na.Simanye has been playing for nine years and took to

tennis after watching her uncle (Kempele) coaching other youngsters.

“Being confident and also consistent is what makes a good player,’’ she said.

Simanye, who also does athletics and whose favourite player is Serena Williams, backs her forehand said she hoped the East cape team will do well in Pretoria.

Coach Kempele said the fact the two would be going to high school next year would be good for Kingsridge.

“We are taking away a strong squad of four boys and four girls and with Sinazo and Simanye seeded one and two respectively we should do well,’’ he said.

Phillip Nel who captains Stirling High School’s U15A cricket team and who has made the Border Schools’ team would not shirk his duties if named captain of the Border

outfit.“The captain of the Border team will be named soon and I

think I may stand a chance,’’ he said.Phillip, now in Grade 0, started playing the game nine years

ago while at Stirling Primary and has developed into an all-rounder.

The highlight for him so far was the 115 not out scored against St Stithians when in Grade 7 batting number three while last year he scored two half centuries against Dale Col-lege.

Phillip believes a captain must be a good leader with the ability to communicate well.

“As a player one has to be dedicated and to go further put-ting in that extra hard work is important,’’ he said.

He has been part of the school’s first team cricket squad since Grade 8 and also turns out for the U16A hockey team as a left link.

Four Hudson Park High School stu-dents have made the Border U19 cricket team and will attend the inter-

provincial in Durban.from December 11-15.Of the four, who all play for the school

first team, Jamie-Lee Marais and Thando Chithi are all-rounders, Zenande Kaulela is a fast bowler and Caelin Hall a leg-spinner.

Jamie-Lee and Caelin have both made the Border team before and like the others, are looking forward to visiting Durban

Zenande, in Grade 11, said she loves her sport and began playing cricket when in Grade 8.

“I can’t tell you how many wickets I’ve taken as I don’t count them but I love ev-erything about the game,’’ she said.

Caelin also started playing cricket in Grade 8 and as far as she can remember, has taken 13 wickets.

She added: “My hero is AB de Villiers while my favourite bowler is JP Dyminy.’’

Thando said she began playing street cricket age six or seven and carried on playing while at Crewe Primary. This is the third year she has represented Border.

He best bowling figures were 5/6 play-ing against West Bank while her favourite cricketer is Virat Koli of India.

“I also play football and hockey and have also represented Border at both,’’ she said modestly.

Jamie-Lee has scored a massive 215 runs in just four games being not out in all four. She was finally given out playing against Cambridge High after suffering a knee

injury.“As vice-captain of the Border side I

think the team should do well. All of us would like to thank our new Hudson team coach Tim Niemand who has helped us a lot as well as the co-ordinator of girls’ cricket, Miss De’Ath.

Any funny incidents on the cricket field?’’ I ask.

Caelin spoke up first saying: “I remem-ber the time two tail-end batters collided while running and both dropped their bats.

Jamie-Lee said she remembers bowling a girl on her collarbone in the nets who promptly gave up the game while all four remembered a girl ripping her track pants while bending down fielding a ball.

Go girls.

Beaconhurst High School’s Tiffany Scott has reason to brag. Not only does she participate in eight different sports, she

has earned her Border colours in triathle, biathle, biathlon, swimming, athletics and cross-country while also playing netball and water polo.

Said Tiffany: “I’m the only swimmer in my family as my two older brothers were heavily into their rugby. Of all the sports biathle is my favourite.’’

Tiffany is also a long distance athlete who trains under the watchful eye of Sammy Saunders and she is also a member of the Aquanova Swimming Club where her coach is Lyn Shone.

Speaking on swimming, Tiffany said participating in galas was nice in that although it was an individual sport the support of the team played an important role.

Tiffany has attended the SA Biathle, Biathlon and Triathle Champi-onships and last year represented the Eastern Cape swim team.

“I do two hour swimming training sessions every week Monday to Friday and at times only reach home after 8pm where I still have to eat and study but it’s worth it.

“The nice thing is my mom (Nita) and dad (Dion) are very support-ive and travel to all my tournaments,’’ she said.

On leaving school, Tiffany said she would like to study to become a teacher and also coach.

He’s big and strong and turned out at flank for the Border Country Districts team at this year’s Craven Week in Stel-lenbosch.

Meet Khanysile Salaze, a Grade 11 student at Stutterheim High School who believes rugby brings out character in a person.

“When one’s body and mind is tired one has to dig deep to win, especially when the going gets tough,’’ he says.

Turning out for his school’s first team at lock, Khanysile speaks his mind on what makes a good player in this position.

“A lock must be aggressive and be able to fight for the ball. Also in the scrums he plays a key role in helping the scrum go

forward.’’He started playing rugby when seven years old and turned out

at wing at U9 level, lock at U11 and eighthman for the U13 team.“Our toughest inter-schools game last year was against Win-

terberg who we beat in the last minute. This year against them I got kneed in the jaw and could not eat for two days. but our first team only lost two games out of eight or nine.

“Unfortunately at Craven Week I suffered a ankle injury against Griquas CD and had to leave the field but that’s the game,’’ he pointed out.

He adds he would like to further his rugby career and play for a union via an agent on leaving school. If that doesn’t happen he says he will join the military.
