GRAVITY WALLSA gravity wall is a retaining wall that does not use soilreinforcement. It has height limitations specific to eachproduct. A gravity wall relies on the weight and setbackof the block to resist the soil forces being exerted onthe wall.

www.acheson-glover.comAcheson & Glover

32 33

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF RETAINING WALLS - GRAVITY AND ENGINEERED.

These are segmental retaining walls taller than gravitywalls that can be designed several ways. Geosyntheticreinforcement is often used, however, in conjunction with Acheson & Glover two other options are available.

GEOSYNTHETIC-REINFORCED RETAINING WALL

A geosynthetic-reinforced wall needs to be designed by aqualified engineer. With reinforced retaining walls thereare (theoretically) no height limitations, and they are usedin taller applications. It requires more work area behindthe structure. The block of soil is stabilized by introducingreinforcement layers into the soil mass behind the facingunits. The larger the stabilized soil mass, the more soil canbe retained or held back. The geosynthetic reinforcementin the soil extends past the theoretical failure plane andserves to create a large rectangular mass of block andreinforced soil, restraining the retained soil.

The AnchorplexTM retaining wall system offers a uniquesolution to problematic wall construction sites. It is aretaining wall built with Anchor products and selfcompacting structural backfill specified by a qualifiedprofessional, backed up with all of the calculationsrequired to meet the needs of the most challenging sites.

In combination with an Anchor block, the structuralbackfill attaches itself to the wall facing effectivelyincreasing the depth and increasing the mass of thefacing. The structural backfill acts as the requireddrainage zone.

Using this system of structural backfill eliminates theneed to construct a stabilised earth zone behind the wallfacing. This method of construction also requiressubstantially less excavation than is necessary with grid-reinforced wall systems. Because of these efficiencies andthe ease of design, AnchorplexTM walls have becomeextremely popular with contractors and designersworldwide. DIRECT ANCHORAGE SYSTEM

Direct Anchorage is a system whereby an anchor is firstsecured into the ground and then connected togalvanised beams installed within the horizontal core ofthe Landmark retaining wall blocks. Landmark blockshave been specifically designed to accommodate this typeof construction.

Each galvanised steel beam spans two adjacent anchors, transferring the load from the segmental retaining wallunits to the anchors.

GRAVITY WALLINSTALLATION GUIDE

A GRAVITY WALL IS A RETAINING WALL THATDOES NOT USE SOIL REINFORCEMENT.

Full installation guidelines are availableupon request from Acheson & Glover.

BASIC INSTALLATION

SETTING OUT THE WALL AND EXCAVATIONSEE DIAGRAMS 1, 2 & 3

• Stake out a string line in the required position for the frontface of the wall.

• Cut a face slope into the soil 600mm back from this line, down to the finished ground level required along the frontof the wall. This will leave enough room for the drainagefill that must be installed behind the back of the wall.

• Once the face slope has been cut, reposition the stakes andstring lines in the correct position for the front of the wall.

• Dig out a level trench 300mm deep. The edge of the trenchwill be 150mm in front and 450mm behind the stake andstring lines (making the trench width 600mm in total).

• Remove the stakes and string lines. Use a hand tamper orvibrating plate compactor to firmly compact the soil in thebase of the trench before proceeding to the next step.

LEVELLING PAD (FOOTING)SEE DIAGRAM 4

• An aggregate levelling pad is made of a good compactablebase material - MOT Type 1, 20-40mm Aggregate with fines,Crusher Run or similar.

• The pad must be a minimum of 150mm deep (aftercompaction) and must fill the full width of the excavationtrench.

• Using either a hand tamper or vibrating plate compactor, fully compact the aggregate, making sure it is level front-to-back and side-to-side.

• If the ground levels along the wall length slope by morethan 150mm, the levelling pad must be stepped up tomatch the slope of the ground.

BASE COURSESEE DIAGRAM 5

• The most important step in the construction process.

• Select and mix blocks from a minimum of three packs tohelp achieve a balanced colour blend.

• Begin laying blocks at the lowest elevation of the wall.

• The base course blocks must be fully bedded and liecompletely flat on the levelling pad.

• Screed out a thin layer of course grit sand on top of thelevelling pad.

• Lay the first block, levelling it front to back and side to side, using the screeded sand to fully bed the block.

• Use a string line along the back of the blocks (not the front)to align the units, or evenly align the back of the units toform smooth and consistent curves.

• Place the blocks side by side, just touching each other at thefront. Make sure the blocks are fully bedded on the sandscreed. Level the blocks in both directions with a spirit level.

• Carefully replace the soil to the front and back of the blocksand lightly compact the soil using a hand compactor, ensuring that the blocks alignment and levels do notchange.

• Completely fill all the block cores and all the voids betweenblocks with drainage aggregate.

DRAINAGE DESIGNSEE DIAGRAM 6

• Good drainage is critical to ensuring the long termperformance of any segmental retaining wall.

• ‘Pea Gravel’, ‘15-20mm Clean’ or ‘No Fines Aggregate’should always be used for the drainage fill.

• Water collected from the drainage fill behind the wall mustbe directed away from the wall either into an existingdrainage network where permissable or, a safe area awayfrom and lower than the wall.

• For walls longer than 15 metres, install drainage weep holesno more than 15 metres apart. Remove 50mm off the frontof two adjacent blocks to provide sufficient space for thedrain pipe to exit through the face to form the weep hole.

• The perforated drainage pipe should be positioned as lowas possible behind the wall and should be placed in themiddle point of the 300mm drainage zone.

NEXT COURSE CONSTRUCTION SEE DIAGRAM 7

• Clean any debris off the top of the blocks. Blocks must beclean and free from debris to ensure perfect alignment.

• Always select and mix blocks from a minimum of threepacks to help achieve a balanced colour blend.

• Place the second course of blocks on top of the base courseby placing each block centrally over the joint of the blocksbelow (running bond).

• Pull each unit forward until the locator is securely in contactwith the units below.

• Once all the blocks in the second course are in position, backfill between the soil slope and the blocks with drainageaggregate.

• The drainage aggregate must extend at least 300mm backfrom the rear of the wall to the soil slope to ensure properdrainage takes place.

• Completely fill all the block cores and all the voids betweenblocks with drainage aggregate.

REMAINING COURSES SEE DIAGRAM 8

• Continue to install each course of blocks and drainage fill inthe same way.

• Note that drainage fill must be placed for each coursebefore the next one is started. Do not install more than onecourse of blocks without the drainage fill. Unless thispractice is followed, the drainage fill will not completely fillall the voids in the blocks and wall movement or settlementmay then occur at a later date.

FINAL COURSE SEE DIAGRAM 9

• When using Regal Stone, the blocks in the last courseshould be installed upside down.

• Once the wall has been checked and no further changes oradjustments are required, the top course (and thesubsequent cap course) must be bonded in place using therecommended adhesive.

FINISH LEVELS AND SURFACE DRAINAGE SEE DIAGRAM 10

• To ensure proper water drainage away from the wall, use100mm of soil with low permeability. This will minimizewater seeping into the soil and drainage aggregate behindthe wall.

ENGINEERED WALLINSTALLATION GUIDE

SEGMENTAL RETAINING WALLSTALLER THAN GRAVITY WALLS.

SETING OUT THE WALL &EXCAVATION - SEE DIAGRAM 1

• Mark out the wall placement. Verify thelocations with the client and engineer ifrequired or appropriate.

• Mark out the location of the excavationtrench so that, when dug, the wall blockswill run centrally down the middle of thetrench with equal spacing between thefront and back of the blocks to the frontand back of the trench.

• For engineered walls make the excavation600mm from front to back, and 350mmdeep, unless design assistance has specifiedthis differently.

• Firmly compact the soil in the base of thetrench, using a vibrating plate compactorbefore installing the levelling pad.

LEVELLING PAD (FOOTING)SEE DIAGRAM 2

• An aggregate levelling pad is made of agood compactible base material - e.g. MOTType 1, 20-40mm Aggregate with fines,Crusher Run or similar.

• The pad must be 150mm deep (aftercompaction) and must extend the full widthof the excavation trench.

• Fully compact the aggregate, using avibrating plate compactor, making sure it islevel front-to-back and side-to-side.

• If the ground levels along the wall lengthslope by more than 200mm, the levellingpad must be stepped up to match the slopeof the ground.

BASE COURSESEE DIAGRAM 3

• The most important step in the constructionprocess.

• Always randomly select and mix blocksfrom a minimum of three packs to helpachieve a balanced colour blend.

• Begin laying blocks at the lowest elevationof the wall.

• The base course blocks must be fullybedded and lie completely flat on thelevelling pad.

• Lay the first block, levelling it front to backand side to side.

• Place the blocks side by side, flush againsteach other, making sure the blocks are infull contact with the levelling pad. Ensureblocks are level in both directions with aspirit level.

• Use a string line along the back of theblocks to align the wall units, or evenlyalign the back of the units (not the front) toform smooth and consistent curves.

• If the wall site is on an incline, do not slopethe blocks; step them up so they remainconsistently level.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEXTCOURSE - SEE DIAGRAMS 4 AND 5

• Always randomly choose and mix blocksfrom a minimum of three packs to helpachieve a balanced colour blend.

• Clean any debris off the top of the blocks.

• Place the second course of blocks on top ofthe base course. Maintain running bond byplacing the units in a staggered relationshipto the course beneath.

• Push the block forward towards the frontof the wall to ensure the locator cam orrear lip is tightly located against the blockbelow.

• Backfill with drainage aggregate directlybehind the block, adding 200mm at a time.

• The drainage aggregate should be 15-20mm clean or ‘no fines’ aggregate andshould extend at least 300mm back fromthe rear of the wall.

• Fill all voids between each wall unit withdrainage aggregate. Block cores must alsobe fully filled.

DRAINAGE DESIGN SEE DIAGRAMS 6 AND 7

• Each project is unique. The ground levels onthe site will determine at what level toinstall the perforated drainage pipe, butgenerally the drainage pipe is positioned aslow as possible behind the wall so waterdrains down, out and away from the wallinto a storm drain, or to an area lower thanthe wall.

• The perforated drainage pipe should beplaced in the middle point of the 300mmdrainage zone.

• You may need to place and backfill severalcourses to achieve the proper drainagelevel. For best results, consider covering theperforated drainage pipe with a geotextilesock to act as a filter.

COMPACTION SEE DIAGRAM 8

• Shovel suitable compactible backfillmaterial behind the drainage aggregateand compact the fill (not he drainageaggregate) with a hand-operatedcompactor.

• Make sure the aggregate is level with orslightly below the top of the base course.

• Place soil in front of the base course andfully compact. The base course must beburied.

• Continue to fill and compact the backfill aseach course is constructed.

• Self propelled compaction equipmentshould not be used within 1.2 metres of thewall units.

REINFORCEMENT FOR WALLS ABOVE 1000MM HIGH

• Geosynthetic reinforcement is generallyrequired for walls taller than 1000mm.

• For walls taller than 1000mm a suitablyqualified engineer must be consulted fordesign assistance. Contact Acheson &Glover for names and contact details ofengineers in your area.

FINISH LEVELS AND SURFACE DRAINAGE• Protect the wall with a finished ground

level at the top and bottom.

• To ensure proper water drainage awayfrom the wall, use a minimum of 200mm ofsoil with low permeability. This willminimize water seeping into the soil anddrainage aggregate behind the wall.

SITE CLEANING ANDRESTORATION• Brush off the wall and clean up any debris

from the construction process.

• Following these best practices forconstruction will ensure the successfulconstruction of an Anchor Vertica® Wall.

CORNER DETAILS

EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY THROUGHFUNCTIONAL DESIGN FLEXIBILITY.

INSIDE CORNERS

BASE COURSE

To create an inside 90° corner, begin by placing a block atthe corner. Then lay a second block perpendicular to the firstand continue laying out the rest of the base course workingfrom the corner out.

NEXT COURSE

On the second course, place all blocks in a running bondalong one side of the corner. Once the second course of onewall is established, begin the second course of the adjacentwall. Several blocks away from the corner, position full blocksin a running bond. Continue the running bond back towardsthe corner, until the gap becomes less than a full unit. A splitunit* will then be required to maintain running bond awayfrom the corner. Measure the length of the unit required andsplit to fit.

Block placement in the corner must alternate in direction witheach succeeding course. The locating cam of the block beingoverlaid within the corner should be removed manually usinga hammer and chisel, and these units should be bonded inplace using a concrete adhesive.

*Cutting or splitting blocks - Use a hydraulic or mechanical splitter,or split manually by using a hammer and chisel to score the blockon all sides. A circular masonry saw may also be used.

INSIDE CORNERS - REINFORCEMENT

FIRST COURSE WITH REINFORCEMENT

To install reinforcement on an inside 90° corner, begin bychecking the wall plan to determine reinforcement lengthsand elevations. Cut reinforcement to the lengths shown in thewall plan, paying attention to the reinforcement strengthdirection.

Next, determine the proper placement of the reinforcementby dividing the proposed height of the wall by four. Thisrepresents the distance that reinforcement must extendbeyond the front of the adjoining wall. Measure this distancefrom the front of the adjoining wall and begin the gridplacement here.

Example: If overall wall height is 1.2 metres, thereinforcement extension would be 300mm.

Make sure the grid is placed 25mm back from the face of theblock below and runs along the back of the adjoining wall.

Place the next section of reinforcement on the adjoiningwall. The reinforcement must not overlap and should lie flushwith previously placed sections. Once reinforcement is inplace, the next course of blocks can be installed.

SECOND COURSE WITH GEOGRID

The first section of grid on this course is placed using thesame formula that determines placement in front of theadjoining wall. Alternate the reinforcement extension to theprevious reinforced course on each course wherereinforcement is required.

Place the next section of reinforcement on the adjoiningwall. The reinforcement must not overlap and should lie flushwith previously placed sections. Once reinforcement is inplace, the next course of block can be installed.

OUTSIDE CORNERS

BASE COURSE

To build an outside 90° corner, begin by placing a corner basecourse working from the corner block outwards.

SECOND COURSE

Lay a corner block perpendicular to the one below and fix theblock in place with concrete adhesive. Two or three blocks awayfrom the corner lay full blocks, maintaining running bond with thecourse below. Lay blocks back towards the corner block, leavingspace for the final split units required to complete the course.

Use split units immediately adjacent to the corner block tocomplete the course. Continue to alternate the corner unitorientation with each course and always use a concrete adhesiveon all corner blocks and split units. Use split units* as necessary tomaintain running bond.

*Cutting or splitting blocks - Use a hydraulic or mechanical splitter, orsplit manually by using a hammer and chisel to score the block on allsides. A circular masonry saw may also be used.

OUTSIDE CORNERS - REINFORCEMENT

FIRST COURSE WITH REINFORCEMENT

Begin by checking the wall plans from the engineer todetermine reinforcement lengths and elevations. At eachreinforced course, lay a section of reinforcement near the cornerwall, ensuring that it is placed 25mm back from the wall face inone direction, whilst running along the back, but not overlappingthe adjacent wall. Ensuring no grid overlap occurs, continue thegrid reinforcement along both legs of the wall, to thereinforcement lengths specified. At this stage, there will still beseveral blocks which are not in contact with any reinforcement.Grid must not be directly overlaid, so this reinforcement must beincorporated at the next block level up. Lay the next course ofblocks and before backfilling, mark the portion of the wallwithout reinforcement. This is important, because once the backfillis in place this cannot be seen.

Back fill and compact behind the course of blocks. Cut anadditional length of grid to correspond to the marked section ofblocks. This grid should be cut to the length shown in thedrawings and laid so that it is placed 25mm back from the wallface, whilst running along the back, but not overlapping theadjacent wall.

Repeat this procedure at each reinforced layer within the wall, alternating the alignment of the additional layer of reinforcementat each elevation.

INSIDE CURVES

MINIMUM RADIUS

When building an inside curve, the minimum radius allowed(when measured to the front face of the block) for an AnchorVertica® wall is 2.08 metres. Check the wall plan to ensurethe radius of the base courses of any inside curves are greaterthan 2.08 metres.

BASE COURSE

Begin by driving a stake into the ground at the desired centreof the curve. Attach a string and rotate it in a circle aroundthe stake to mark the radius in the levelling pad (footing orbase). Align each block face with the radius curve and ensurelevel placement from side to side and front to back.

ADDITIONAL COURSES

On each course, the back of the locating cam of each blockmust be in contact with the units below to ensure structuralstability. The setback of the block will cause the radius of eachcourse to gradually increase and eventually affect the runningbond of the wall. To maintain proper running bond, use splitunits* as needed. Once a split unit is cut to size, bond in placewith a concrete adhesive.

*Cutting or splitting blocks - Use a hydraulic or mechanical splitter,or split manually by using a hammer and chisel to score the blockon all sides. A circular masonry saw may also be used.

INSIDE CURVES - REINFORCEMENT

Retaining walls are designed assuming 100% coverageof the reinforcement.

When building a curve the reinforcement will have gaps. Toensure 100% coverage, additional lengths of reinforcementare used to fill those gaps on the next course of blocks. Neveroverlap the grid on one course to avoid slippage.

FIRST COURSE WITH REINFORCEMENT

Cut reinforcement to the lengths specified in the wallplan. Lay segments of reinforcement within 25mm of the faceof the wall, making sure that the strength direction of eachsection is perpendicular to the wall face. Place the next courseof blocks, marking the backs of blocks to identify the middleof un-reinforced areas. Backfill and compact.

NEXT COURSE

On the next course, centre subsequent sections of thereinforcement on the marked blocks to ensure fullreinforcement coverage. This step is important because whenthis course is backfilled, it is impossible to locate theunreinforced areas. Repeat this procedure throughout theconstruction of the radius curve when reinforcement isrequired.

OUTSIDE CURVES

MINIMUM RADIUS

The radius of the top course of an Anchor wall will always beless than the radius of the base course because of the batterof the wall.

For Anchor walls built with outside curves the minimumradius of the top course of blocks must not be less than aradius of 1.82 metres.

The table below shows the minimum allowed radius of thebase course for various wall heights. For each wall height, provided that the actual base course radius is greater than theminimum shown, the radius of the top course will always begreater than the allowed minimum of 1.82 metres.

Example: A 1.60 metre wall is being built with an outsidecurve. The radius of the base course is 2.15 metres. Theminimum allowed radius of a base course for a 1.60m highwall is 2.02 metres, so the curve can ‘just’ be built successfully.

ADDITIONAL COURSES

On each course, the back of the locating cam of each blockmust be in contact with the units below to ensure structuralstability. The setback of the block will cause the radius of eachcourse to gradually decrease and eventually affect therunning bond of the wall. To maintain proper running bond, use split units* as needed. OUTSIDE CURVES - REINFORCEMENTRetaining walls are designed assuming 100% coverage of

the reinforcement. When building a curve the reinforcementwill have gaps. To ensure 100% coverage, additional lengths ofreinforcement are used to fill those gaps on the next course ofblocks. Do not overlap the grid on one course to avoid slippage.

FIRST COURSE WITH REINFORCEMENT

Cut reinforcement to the lengths specified in the wall plan.Lay sections of the reinforcement within 25mm of the face ofthe wall with the strength direction perpendicular to the wallface. Avoid overlapping the reinforcement by separating eachsection.

NEXT COURSE

Place the next course of blocks, marking the backs of blocks toidentify unreinforced areas. This step is important becausewhen this course is backfilled, it is impossible to locate the un-reinforced areas.

Use the marked blocks as a guide, placing subsequentsections of reinforcement to overlap the gaps left on theprevious course. This will ensure total reinforcement coverage.

Repeat this procedure throughout the construction of theradius curve whenever reinforcement is required.

‘Green’ Facts for A&GConcrete segmental retaining wall units are rated ‘A+’under the Green Guide. Acheson & Glover have aninternal environmental management system.

A&G recognise that the activities of the organisation couldpotentially have a significant impact on the environment. In order to minimise this impact, we take a proactive ratherthan reactive stance on environmental issues. In recognition ofthese efforts, we have won a number of environmental awards.

ISO 14001CERTIFICATIONBS EN ISO 14001 is a comprehensive tool thatprovides all industry with a way of controllingenvironmental impacts. A&G were awardedcertification for a multi-site management system(across 8 NI manufacturing sites and 3 quarries)that documents environmental impactsincluding: Energy Waste, Production Waste andCarbon Emissions.

OHSAS 18001CERTIFICATIONOHSAS 18001:2007 is an internationaloccupational health and safety managementsystem that provides a framework to controlhealth and safety risks and improve the healthand safety of employees.

A&G was awarded certification because of thehigh standards of safety awareness across all ofits operations.

Design professionals can trust that A&G willalways apply best practice in terms of health and safety.

THE GREENORGANISATIONA&G have been awarded Bronze membershipstatus within The Green Organisation, one of the country's leading environment groups.Membership is restricted to companies, councilsand communities that can demonstrate theeffective measures that have been introducedfor environmental benefit and A&G wasawarded the distinction of Bronze membershipstatus as a result of its actively adoptingmeasures that will continue to improve theirenvironmental performance for generations to come.

As the retaining walls are all mortarlesssystems, caps should be applied using aconcrete adhesive, eliminating the needfor mortar and the associated risk ofmortar stains.

General WearClean using a stiff brush, mild detergentand water from a low pressure hose.

Remedial WorkAny type of remedial work should be testedon a small area which is not easily seen sothat it can be assessed before carrying outwork on a large area.

Remedial cleaning procedures may affectthe final appearance of the masonry. Foryour safety, make sure you use gloves, goggles, safety helmet etc.

Power WashingUsing a power hose is not recommended asit may damage the surface of the product.

GraffitiIt’s best to take preventative measures ifgraffiti is likely to occur. Anti-graffitisystems are available. These consist of aprotective sacrificial coating on the masonrywhich acts as a barrier against the adhesionof the graffiti.

EfflorescenceEfflorescence (also known as ‘white bloom’)is the milky white staining that sometimesappears early on in all quality products witha high cement content.

A temporary condition which is purelycosmetic and requires no treatment, it ishard to predict how long it may last due tovarying factors such as climate conditions, location and aspect (in some cases it cantake around a year to disappear).

We hope this does not detract from yourenjoyment of our products and would liketo stress that Acheson & Glover cannot beheld responsible for this naturalphenomenon.

The best course of action is to let naturetake its course.
