Relentless testingDifferent test criteria are being applied de-pending on the application. They all include a „relentless“ test procedure. Only products that possess all required properties without any fault can pass the EPHY-MESS quality test. Quality Assurance

Routine testingOur quality assurance monitors compliance with legal requirements (standards) and technical specifications. At EPHY-MESS each ar-ticle undergoes tests to control e.g. dimension, tension, pressure, tightness, functionality, insulation and dielectric strength at the final inspection section of the quality department.

In addition in the course of its compliance with standards, each sen-sor has to fulfill an optical inspection as well as in some cases ad-ditionally mechanical testing. The system-optimized, automated and computer-based processes as well as high quality test and meas-urement equipment ensure accurate measurements and traceable documentation.

EPHY-MESS keeps fit rolling stock

Particularly the sensors in high-speed trains must work with absolute reliability under diverse operating conditions. EPHY-MESS temperature sensors, speed sensors and oil level gauges meet these requirements and have proven themselves in world-renowned international train projects.

Forces created by shocks require that the sen-sor elements possess a special internal struc-ture to ensure the continuous capture of reliable measuring values. Over the years EPHY-MESS has gained valuable experience and a thorough knowledge of this technologically demanding field.

The modular concept - developed especially for rolling stock - enables quick and cost-effective integration of various sensors in a sensor sys-tem. Beside temperature sensors, speed sen-sors can also be integrated in the EPHY-MESS sensor concept. Single modules can be mount-ed to one completely assembled multi-arm har-ness.

Large wind power plants and difficult to reach offshore facilities require the highest reliability and safety for all components under increas-ingly critical operating conditions. Reliable continuous temperature control plays an es-sential role. Standard mounted coil head sen-sors as well as bearing and slot resistance thermometers are used to monitor temperature in generators or gearboxes and drives. We are constantly collecting and expanding our com-prehensive temperature monitoring knowledge for various wind plant concepts. Due to the

In general

PTC and NTC thermistors and silicon-based sensors (KTY type 83-1xx and 84-1xx) are the proven choice for thermal monitoring of electrical machines and motor protection. Motor pro-tection thermistors are particularly suitable for monitoring certain threshold temperatures. A reliable protection against overheating can be realized using these types of thermistors to-gether with a matching trigger device. In many cases silicon sensors and NTC enable low-cost selective temperature measurement with sufficient accuracy.

All sensors are assembled by EPHY-MESS primarily for installation in the winding or slot of electric machines. However, they are also suitable for other temperature measurement and monitoring tasks.

PTC thermistors

A positive temperature coefficient thermistor (PTC) is a semiconductor of endowed, polycrystalline barium titanate ceramic, whose electrical resistance rapidly increases when a certain temperature is exceeded. PTC thermistors available by EPHY-MESS are mainly motor protection thermistors ac-cording to DIN EN 44081 - 82 and already comply with the successor standard DIN VDE 0898-1-40. They are set in the winding of electrical motors, generators and transformers. The typical characteris-tic curve of motor protection thermistors is displayed in the diagram on the right page.

As shown in the characteristic curve illustration, the resistance value of the PTC thermistor rises steeply after reaching its reference temperature. To classify the sensor, a certain point is defined in the steep range of the characteristic curve, the so-called nominal response temperature (NRT).

It refers to the temperature value at which the downstream switching device responds within the tolerance range. When selecting the PTC to be used, its NRT incl. tolerance must be selected in such a way that it corresponds to the maximum permissible operating temperature of the motor.

PTC thermistors with different NRT can also be connected in series in one measuring circuit. This means that different temperature ranges of a machine can be monitored with only one measuring circuit. As soon as a PTC exceeds the maximum temperature specified by its NRT, the in-line trip device switches the machine off. Furthermore, it is also possible to use two different NRT if e.g. a combination of pre-warning and shutdown should be implemented on one motor. However, in this case two measuring circuits are also required.

1 0 .T H E R M I S T O R SN T CNTC thermistors are mainly used to monitor resistance changes over a wide temperature range. Because of the flexibility in their design NTC ther-mistors can be put to use in a wide range of environments with demanding design requirements. Miniature thermistors can be used in monitoring points only 1.5 mm wide.

NTC thermistors

The NTC thermistor is a temperature dependent semiconductor resistor according to DIN EN 44070 respectively IEC 60593, whose resistance value decreases with increasing temperature - contrary to PTC thermistors. The negative temperature coefficient (NTC) is about -2 to -6% per kelvin and thus about ten times larger than for metals. NTC thermistors are therefore well suited for temperature measurements.

They consist of manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc oxide and are admixed with other oxides for chemical stabilisation. These are processed into a powder mass and, after the addition of a binding agent, sintered at temperatures of approx. 1000°C - 1400°C. The polycrystalline semiconductors are then pinned and aged by means of special ageing processes to stabilize the resistance values.

NTC are available as miniaturized, glass-encapsulated or enamelled designs.

The characteristic curve of a thermistor is showing a non-linear behaviour compared to platinum sensors (as Pt100) due to the temperature dependency of the resistance. For correct measure-ment one has to consider the tolerance in the base resistance value as well as the tolerance in the curve slope (so-called B-value).

The change of resistance in operation can occur by temperature change in the environment (exter-nal heating) or by self-heating due to excessive measuring current. While monitoring of a specified temperature is firmly specified by nominal response temperature NAT of PTC thermistors, the switching temperature of a NTC can be defined and set at the device.

1 1 .S I L I C O N S E N S O R SK T Y S E M I C O N D U C T O R SKTY silicon sensors are devices with a semiconductor layer. They possess, similar to PTC thermistors, a positive temperature coefficient but in contrast they show an approximate linear characteristic. While handling or processing KTY sensors it is necessary to note that these components are sensitive to static electricity and their long-term behaviour can be damaged by ESD. Appropriate precautions (ESD protection) should be taken.

Silizium Sensoren KTY

Silicon sensors of the KTY series are diode-like semiconductors. Their operation temperature range extends from -55°... +175°C (KTY83 series), resp. from -40°C ... +300°C (KTY84 series), which is sufficient for most industrial measurement purposes. Like PTC thermistors, they have a positive temperature coefficient, but in contrast to these, they show an approximately linear characteristic curve. Their resistance behavior is comparable to that of a measuring resistor with a high temperature coefficient uch as a Pt1000.

The application area includes temperature measurement and limit monitoring. The tolerance range at reference temperature is between 3% and 5% accuracy depending on construction, much larger than a Pt100 resistance thermometer. But the accuracy is completely sufficient for many applications, such as motor protection of small electric machines, because in this case the sensors operate closely to their nominal temperature (for KTY84-1xx) and these applications usually do not depend on one degree more or less. Therefore KTY sensors are widely used in industry as a common alternative to classic Chip-Pt100 resistors.

The sensors assembled by EPHY-MESS are based on the KTY83-1xx and KTY84-1xx series. Other KTY types (e.g. KTY81-1xx) are also available on request. Since 2015 both series have been discontinued by the manufacturer, EPHY-MESS can guarantee a longer-term supply security - especially for the spare parts business - thanks to sustainable purchasing planning based on many years of market experience and the previous ordering behaviour. For this purpose the basic sensors are stored in a special storage atmosphere to prevent premature aging.

Customized configurations of PTC, NTC and KTY basic sensors

PTC thermistors are ceramic resistors, which show a high conductivity at low temperature, whereas they have low conductivity at high temperature, so they have a positive temperature coefficient (PTC). They provide an alternative to metallic resistors (e.g. Pt100) and silicon sensors for measuring temperatures, but are not linear with the temperature. There is a material-dependent critical temperature, at which a dramatic change occurs in the resistance value (exponential function). The change in resistance can be used as a switch and enables the motor protector.

NTC thermistors, usually made of semiconductor materials, conduct the electric current at high temperatures better than at low ones. They have a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) and are usually chosen when the optimum switching function has yet to be set.

KTY silicon sensors are inexpensive to produce by wafer processing, but face the disad-vantage of being relatively imprecise in the application of linear temperature measurement. They must be linearized by calibration methods requiring electronic support.

As with Pt100 sensors EPHY-MESS provides PTC, NTC thermistors and KTY silicon sen-sors in many different designs and assemblies. The range includes versions with a simple base sensor connected to cable and insulation by heat-shrinkable tubes, as well as ceramic or metal sleeves. There are also offered with different heads as screw-in thermometers.

Assembled with shrinking tube, metal sleeve or ceramic sleeve they mainly operate in lower temperature ranges from -40°C to +200°C. As basic resistors KTY sensors, PTC and NTC thermistors are installed. But also thermocouples, Pt100, Pt500 or Pt1000 measuring resistors can be used as measuring elements.

Cable thermometer with metal sleeve (MH). In this design, he basis resis-tors KTY, PTC, NTC are connected to the supply line by soldering (hard / soft soldering). In this case, the two soldering joints are insulated against each other and the measuring resistor is insulated against the sleeve. The sensor is then assembled with heat conductive paste in a metallic protection sleeve made of brass or stainless steel. The sensor is fixed connected to the supply line by press squeeze, roll squeeze or casting and offers high mechanical strength.

In this thermometer the basis re-sistors KTY, PTC, NTC are connected to the supply line by soldering (hard / soft soldering). The solder joints are insulated from each other by shrinking tube. The basic resistor is casted with a part of the supply line (strain-relieved) in a ceramic sleeve. By encapsulating the sensor in a ceramic sleeve, internal components are fixed and increased mechanical and electrical protection as well as fast response time is achieved. They are often used in areas of tight space, at the end face of machine housings or are installed in e. g. switching cabinets for monitoring surface temperatures. Customized configurations

Slot thermometers offered by EPHY-MESS are used in the slot of the stator winding of electric machines.

In this product, a PTC, NTC or KTY sensor is used instead of a bifilar wound platinum wire. Their low net weight and small dimensions allow very fast response times. In addi-tion, high nominal values can also be achieved concurrent with the smallest dimensions. Alternatively, Pt100, Pt500, Pt1000 resistors or thermocouples can be used as measur- ing elements.

Almost every thermometer version (except NTC) is also deliverable in certified versions according to IECEx and ATEX or according to TR-, UL/CSA regulations. Generally these thermometers can be also used for all measurements on surfaces or in measuring locations difficult to access.

This temperature sensor consists of a PTC, NTC or KTY resistor with a permanently connected supply line. Feasibility studies and prototype assembly are coordi-nated: with high-quality testing methods in re-search laboratories customer-specific designs and applications are developed and qualified by first article inspections (e. g. compressive strength and vibration testing, tensile testing as well as temperature and climate tests). Op-timizations are carried out by e.g. applying low-polluting materials in accordance with RoHS and REACH.
