for its colourful and quirky col-

in the accomplished irreverence

Take this pink swimsuit with car-

WU’S THE BOSS

Jason Wu’s second outing for

Boss is a confdent assertion of the

brand’s new direction. There is

something for every occasion in the

current womenswear collection.

Need a razor-sharp shirtdress for

daytime? Check. Want a diapha-

nous lilac gown for a formal event?

Double check. Of course, no Boss

collection would be complete with-

out at least one black suit and Wu

does not disappoint with a fawless

SPLIT PERSONALITY

Escada’s spring/summer 2015

collection explores contrast. While

half of the pieces are inspired by all

things bright and bold, the other

ofers a softer, more feminine vi-

sion. Vibrant purples, oranges and

lime greens are combined with

delicate pastels, nudes and mono-

chromes. Accessories follow the

same pattern, and colour-pop san-

dals really stand out when paired

with a neutral handbag. rf

BIG ON STYLE

El Corte Inglés Castellana is one

of the largest department stores in

Europe. Located in the central

business district of Madrid, the

22-storey building is a beacon for

fashion lovers. Bringing together

top brands such as Loewe, Dior,

Céline and Salvatore Ferragamo,

this is a retail experience like no

other. For those looking for more

than just fashion, the store also

houses top luxury watch brands,

high jewellery, cosmetics and

gourmet products. Perhaps one

of the most enticing concepts is

the private area where clients can

peruse items and consider pur-

chases. There are also interpreters,

who speak a range of languages

including Chinese and Russian,

on hand to assist travellers with

any queries. El Corte Inglés’s ship-

ping service can send purchases

ROCK ’N’ RETRO

Since Hedi Slimane’s appoint-

ment as creative director of Saint

Laurent in 2012, the label has be-

come one of the most directional

in men’s fashion. This season’s

collection features the rock- and

retro-inspired menswear which is

becoming the brand’s signature.

At the label’s spring/summer 2015

show in Paris, delightfully dishev-

elled, long-haired models gave an

SWIM TO SHORE

Silkana swimwear was founded

in Spain in 2009 when a group of

fashion designers created a col-

lection of bikinis and one-piece

swimsuits inspired by their trav-

els in Spain, South America and

Indonesia. In order to live in

sunny conditions all year round,

the team moves around the globe,

collecting fabrics and collabo-

rating with small select tailors.

The colourful creations refect

the cultures and surroundings

discovered on these travels, and

pieces can be purchased as sepa-

rates or mixed and matched to

create individual ensembles. Silk-

ana blends romantic retro styling,

outstanding quality and timeless

appeal for swimwear that looks

great whether you’re in or out of

Madrid Fashion Week has a sense of quirky rebellion

quirky rebellion, that both Paris

and London have enjoyed, take

hold on the catwalks.

Elena Rial’s debut collection

created an immediate buzz thanks

to her use of diferent technical me-

diums, used to reference the Story

of the Vivian Girls by American

writer and artist Henry Darger.

Rial’s models emerged wearing

pieces that artfully fused history

and modernity; national costume

was juxtaposed with print and

texture, referencing Darger’s sta-

tus as an outsider artist. ‘I like his

non-technical way of making art-

work,’ Rial explained.

The result was short dress-

es dotted with cultural motifs,

scarves adorned with patriotic

stars and stripes, and pleated tu-

nics in a heavy wool felt that evoked

heritage uniforms. ‘I tried to make

the collection have a particular

focus on details and texture,’ said

Rial. ‘That’s why I developed the

diferent prints and I embroidered

pieces. I took a lot of care in the se-

lection of materials.’

David Delfn was working as a

painter when he designed his frst

clothing collection and his back-

ground in the mixed mediums

of paper, canvas and wood eased

his transition between the two.

Delfn has shown at both Madrid

and New York fashion weeks and

his work frequently references en-

during historical artefacts, such

as handwritten text. This season,

grey-blue cotton skirts and suits

printed with letters and symbols,

in red, yellow, black and white,

evoke footprints of the past in a

thoroughly modern way.

Another designer who is part

of this fashion-as-art movement

is Eva Soto Conde. Conde, a fne

arts graduate, is renowned for her

signature architectural designs and

distinctive, vivid colour palettes.

For spring/summer 2015, Conde

presented show-stopping sculpted

dresses in saturated tones of scar-

let, crimson and canary yellow

– so architecturally rich that they

looked as though they had emerged

from a 3D printer.

All of these diverse designers

share a common desire to docu-

ment a concept using a variety of

diferent mediums, rather than

a single method – an approach

that’s more commonly found in

the art world. Enrique Yáñez is a

Above (from top): Espacio de las Artes, El Corte Inglés; Destructive Geometry by Enrique Yáñez

Madrid-based designer whose use

of mixed medium on canvas dis-

plays his reluctance to commit to

a specifc technique. ‘I feel a con-

stant pull towards new ideas, pro-

cesses and compositions; to physi-

cal colour strengths, techniques

and materials,’ Yáñez explains.

As a result, his works Geometry

Destructive and Man Drinking

Cofee are exploratory pieces that

refrain from making any grandiose

conclusions and, instead, are con-

tent to just be.

While Yáñez represents the

more abstract end of the scale, art

and fashion are increasingly fnd-

ing common ground on the high

street. El Corte Inglés, the Span-

ish department store, now has a

dedicated art gallery in its fag-

ship store. Espacio de las Artes is

invested in providing a platform to

document the creative process, in

addition to selling art itself. Watch

and jewellery retailer Rabat has

also broadened its remit to include

jewellery of a much more direc-

tional quality. Coloured quartz

collections that refect the style of

visionary jewellers like Tom Binns

are one example.

Madrid’s fashion industry cur-

rently has a creative contingent

sending a fresh ripple of invention

through its heart; breaking down

the walls of convention to reveal a

city that now has fashion down to

a fne art

CAFÉ SOCIETYMadrid’s charming and original cafés ofer

much more than just a great cup of cofee,

as Isabella Redmond Styles discovers

Madrid is renowned for its tapas

spots and late-night bars but the

city’s cafés are among some of the

best in Europe. Warm and wel-

coming, they are the perfect place

to relax, people-watch and soak up

the capital’s vibrant atmosphere.

After a day spent sightseeing,

there are few better ways to un-

wind than with a visit to café and

bookshop La Fugitiva, where visi-

tors are encouraged to browse the

store’s impressive collection of lit-

erature as they eat and drink. The

popularity of local favourite Delic

is due to its eclectic menu, exten-

sive opening hours and supply of

great cofee and cocktails.

Those who love organic food

will appreciate the concept be-

hind the chic and colourful Mama

Campo, which combines an or-

ganic grocery store with a café

and restaurant. In the Salamanca

district, French patisserie Fonty

ofers mouth-watering pastries

and savoury dishes – perfect pick-

me-ups at any time of day.

SHOP | 49

D E L I C

Delic is open from 11am to 2am,

Tuesday to Sunday, and is loved

as much for its great food and

drink as its generous trading

hours. The cafè has been a gour-

met institution in Madrid since

1998 and customers love to stop

by for a plate of bruschetta, or a

pizza topped with mozzarella, so-

brasada sausage from Huelva and

quince. The menu also includes

tacos, empanadas and an abun-

dance of cakes, from courgette

to chocolate and hazelnut. After

dark, the café transforms into the

perfect cocktail spot where gin

and tonics are something of a sig-

nature drink, thanks to Delic’s ex-

tensive collection of internation-

ally sourced gins.

Fonty is an eclectic mix of infuenc-

es. Drawing inspiration for its name

from the French town of Fontaine-

bleu, the patisserie is based in one

of Madrid’s smartest neighbour-

hoods. Its interior references both

America’s East Coast and a typical

Parisian café. Founder and owner

Marie Valdez is an authority when

it comes to French patisserie and

viennoiserie, and the café’s sweet

treats, inspired by Valdez’s travels

around Europe, America and Asia,

are a highlight. There’s also great

cofee and plenty of lunchtime op-

tions such as freshly made ricotta

and spinach quiches, sandwiches

and salads. At the weekend, it’s a

popular brunch spot, serving up

eggs Benedict and pancakes, with a

side of well-made cocktails.

38: The Art Of Fashion

globalblue.com

78
