novos trabalhos originais, submetidos a periódicos internacionais, abordando as áreas
Todas as áreas
época do último grande movimento do Lineamento Pernambuco.
Palavras-chave: sismicidade intraplaca, mecanismos focais, Lineamento
Pernambuco, esforços intraplaca

ABSTRACT
This thesis presents and discusses the results of the various seismic areas in the State
of Pernambuco, with the aim of having a vision of regional seismicity and its causes. To the
papers published in journals were added two new original works submitted to international
journals, dealing with seismic areas located in the counties of São Caetano, Cupira, and
Agrestina. All seismic areas mentioned in this thesis are located on the Pernambuco
Lineament and its surroundings (both in branches or single faults within 40 km of it). The
Pernambuco Lineament is a Neoproterozoic shear zone of continental-scale that deformed
the Borborema Province, and presents as branches, shear zones with NE-SW direction.
The new submitted papers are from the analysis of data collected by three local
networks of stations that operated in the following areas: network SO07 (seismicity in the
district of Santa Luzia - São Caetano, 2007), network BM10 (data from seismic areas of
Serra Verde ( Cupira) and Barra do Chata (Agrestina), in 2010), network SO10 (seismicity
near the urban center of São Caetano in 2010). These data were used for determining the
hypocenters and focal mechanisms in order to discuss the relationship between the
seismicity and geological features of the area. The new mechanisms obtained, as well as the
previously published allowed the determination of the direction of the average stress in the
region.
The direction of stress in the region involving the various seismic areas, now or
previously studied, is quite stable and approximate EW direction (SHmax). The correlation
between seismicity and geological features is observed on the lineament and north of it. In
the south (Cupira and Agrestina), in seismic areas nearby shear zones NE-SW, there is no
correlation and seismogenic EW normal faults are active and its motion is compatible with
regional stresses. It is probable that these active faults are more recent than the
Neoproterozoic, probably of the Cretaceous period, when the last great movement of the
Pernambuco Lineament occurred.
Keywords: intraplate seismicity, focal mechanisms, Pernambuco Lineament,
intraplate stresses

CAPÍTULO 1- INTRODUÇÃO
1.1—Sismicidade do Nordeste
no país (p. ex.
do Norte e leste do Ceará), no noroeste do Ceará, no entorno do Lineamento Pernambuco
e no Recôncavo Baiano (Figura. 1.1).
maiores tremores na região Nordeste do Brasil ocorreram na província Borborema.
A sismicidade no Nordeste possui duas características importantes: I) longa
Essas

2013).
(1987 e 2004), Belo Jardim (2004) e São Caetano (2006, 2007 e 2010) (Ferreira &
atingido a magnitude 4.0 mR (escala regional brasileira, Assumpção, 1983) e intensidade
A atividade
(Ferreira et al., 1998, 2008), Belo Jardim 2004 (Lopes et al., 2010) e São Caetano 2007 e

dia 18/04/2010, atingiu a magnitude 2.8 mR e intensidade IV MM, assustou moradores

Todas as
hipocentros bem determinados e mecanismos focais com plano de falha bem definidos;
NE do LPe (Lima Neto et al., 2013).

A Província
deforma a Província Borborema (Figura 1.4).

as estações digitais (Figura 2.1) utilizaram o registrador SMART24(R).

2008; Takeya et al., 1989; do Nascimento et al., 2004; França et al., 2004).

A seta grossa (∆x) indica a relocação para o evento i e j.

O algoritmo
A solução resultante
normalmente é encontrado no arquivo do logfile.

Neste
a solução hipocentral e a solução do mecanismo focal (Reasenberg, 1992).

22
Figura 2.8- Sistemática do problema inverso.

a zona ativa é extensa.

(Meissner, 1986; Fossen, 2012).

Abstract
Seismogenic fault reactivation of continental-scale structures has been observed in
a few intraplate areas, but its cause is still a matter of debate. The objective of the present
study is to analyze two seismic swarms that occurred along the EW-trending Pernambuco
ductile shear zone and in a NE-trending branch, in 2007 and 2010 in São Catano
county,Northeastern Brazil. We studied both epicentral areas using a nine- and a seven
station network during 180 and 54 days, respectively. The results indicate that the 2007
swarm correspond to a right-lateral, strike-slip fault with a normal component of slip
(strike 74°, dip 60°, and rake -145°) and the 2010 swarm corresponds to a normal fault
(strike 265°, dip 79°, and rake -91°). The former reactivated a NE-trending branch,
whereas the latter reactivated the main E-W-trending mylonitic belt of the Pernambuco
shear zone. These results are consistent with seismogenic reactivation of this major
structure, generated by the present-day EW-trending compression and NS-trending
extension, as observed by previous studies. This shear zone was reactivated as rift faults
in the Cretaceous during the South America-Africa breakup. However, our study
confirms that the basement fabric such as continental-scale ductile shear zones, show
evidence of crustal weakness outside areas of previous rifting, and it reveals the potential
for large earthquakes along dormant rift segments associated with major basement shear
belts.

3.1 - Introduction
Faults associated with present-day and ancient rifts correspond to a significant part
of the world intraplate seismicity (Johnston, 1996; Rao et al,. 2002; Stanford et al,. 2002,
2006; Fisher and Horálek, 2003; Seht et al,. 2008). There is mounting evidence that faults
related to rifts have been repeatedly reactivated through time (Ziegler 1992; Holdsworth
et al., 1997). In ancient rifts, present-day seismicity has been related to faults, which in a
few cases reactivate preexisting basement fabric. The system of Cenozoic European rifts
has been described as a source of seismic activity (Ziegler, 1992; Fisher and Horálek,
2003; Klinge et al., 2003; Seht et al., 2008). The Bootheel rift in New Madrid is another
classic case of basement faults that have been repeatedly reactivated and generated
seismicity throughout time (Bisrat et al., 2012). However, a better analysis of additional
cases is still pending to assess if the driving mechanism of these classic examples are
repeated elsewhere.
In Intraplate South America, Sykes (1978) was probably the first to draw attention
to the possible relationship between intraplate seismicity and major lineaments, both in
the continent and ocean, including rifted areas. Another important study was made by
Talwani (1999) that showed the correlation between geometry faults with earthquakes in
intraplate areas. One case of fault reactivation, the Pernambuco shear zone (PSZ), has
drawn attention in recent years. This shear zone occurs in the Borborema Province,
northeastern Brazil, which is one of the most seismically active intraplate areas in South
America. The Pernambuco ductile shear zone (Figure 3.1) is more than 700 km long and
it has been recognized as a seismically active area since the XIX century (Ferreira et al.,
1998, 2008; Lopes et al., 2010). The Pernambuco shear zone was first formed as a
Brasiliano (750-540 Ma) ductile structure. However, it was reactivated as rift faults in the
Cretaceous during the breakup between Africa and South America (Matos, 1992). This
shear zone forms the northern rift border of the Cretaceous Jatobá Basin and the main rift
boundary between the Paraíba and the Pernambuco basins (Lima Filho et al., 2006).
The correlation between seismicity and the Pernambuco shear zones (PSZ) and
related faults has been presented recently (Ferreira et al., 2008; Lopes et al., 2010).
However, two recent cases of earthquake swarms can help better understand the
reactivation mechanism of the PSZ with possible applications to other major structures
such as continental shear zones and related basins in intraplate settings.

The objective of this study is to investigate two new seismic areas near the town of
São Caetano in the Pernambuco shear zone (PSZ). We show detailed hypocentral
location, focal mechanisms, and the correlation between seismicity and tectonic
structures. Our study may improve the understanding of fault reactivation in the
Pernambuco Shear Zone, and may have implications in the study of the role of major
lineaments in intraplate seismicity.
3.2 - Seismo-tectonic setting
The Borborema Province (BP), located in the northeastern part of the South
American Continent, is an intraplate area 900 km long and 600 km wide, which is limited
in the West by the Parnaíba Basin and in the South by the São Francisco Craton (Figure
3.1). The BP encompasses Archean, Paleoproterozoic, and Neoproterozoic terranes,
which were formed or reworked during the Brasiliano orogenic cycle at 750-540 Ma
(Almeida et al., 2000; Brito Neves et al., 2000). The BP is deformed by a system of
ductile shear zones, which mark the boundary between most of these terranes. The
coastal zone encompasses several Cretaceous basins formed during the breakup between
South America and Africa (Matos, 1992; De Castro et al., 2012).
The understanding of the seismicity in the BP has improved in the last 20 years
due to the numerous studies of seismic swarms by local networks. The good exposure of
Precambrian granitic/gneissic rocks in this province, with low attenuation of the seismic
waves, allows very clear recordings of P and S arrivals (Ferreira et al., 1998). Seismicity
is concentrated along the continental margin as far as 250-300 km inland, such as along
the border of the Potiguar Basin, on the northwestern part of Borborema Province, and
along the Pernambuco shear zone. Seismicity occurs in the upper brittle crust at depths
between 1-12 km (Assumpção, 1992; Ferreira et al., 1998, 2008; Bezerra et al., 2007;
Lopes et al., 2010). The largest known event recorde in Northeast Brazil had magnitude
5.2 mb and VII MM. In Northeasthern of Brazil the seismic activity occurs usually as
swarms, which can last ten years or more, in a few cases with more than 1,000 events per
month (Assumpção, 1992, 1993; Ferreira et al., 1998). Seismically defined faults are up
to 40 km long in cases of natural seismicity (Bezerra et al., 2007) and 2.6 km long in the
case of induced seismicity (do Nascimento et al., 2004). These faults both reactivate
shear zones (Ferreira et al., 2008; Lopes et al., 2010; Bezerra et al., 2011) or cut across

preexisting fabric (Ferreira et al., 1998; Bezerra et al., 2011). The overall stress field
derived from focal mechanisms is mainly characterized by EW-trending compression and
NS-trending extension (Ferreira et al., 1998; Lopes et al., 2010).
Figure 3. 1- The study areas of Santa Luzia and São Caetano are in the rectangle that is indicated by the blue arrow. The map show large geological features of Borborema Province (Almeida et al., 2000, Brito Neves et al,. 2000), and sedimentary basins (PnB – Parnaíba Basin, PoB- Potiguar Basin, PbB- Paraíba Basin, PeB –Pernambuco Basin, JaB- Jatobá Basin). Red circles are epicenters of earthquakes from Brazilian Seismic Bulletin catalogue from 1720 to 2010.
The Pernambuco Lineament (Figure 3.1) is a ductile shear zone ~700 km long that
forms part of a system of major shear belts in the BP (Davison et al., 1995). It continues
in Africa as the Adamoua shear zone, forming a structure more than 1,000 km long
(Trompette, 1994; De Castro et al., 2012). Seismicity related to the Pernambuco shear
zone has been known about since the XIX century. The most important events occurred
in 1967 (3.7 mR and V MM), 1984 (3.8 mR and V-VI MM, Ferreira et al., 1998), and
2002 (3.8 mR and IV-V MM, Ferreira et al., 2008), where mR is the Brazilian regional

3.3 - Methods
3.3.1. Data acquisition
An event of magnitude 4.0 mR occurred on May 20, 2006 near the village of Santa
Luzia, São Caetano county, west of Caruaru city, in the state of Pernambuco (Figure 3.2).
The activity persisted after that first event and on February 01, 2007 a local six-station
network was deployed in the epicentral area. The stations were composed of three S13J
(Z, NS, EW) sensors with 1 Hz frequency and SMART24® recorder. After an event of
3.7 mR on March 20, 2007, three additional stations were installed with three-component
broadband KS2000 sensors with flat response from 120 s to 50 Hz and SMART24®
recorders. This network operated until July 31, 2007 using two modes: (1) continuous
recording with a sampling rate of 100 samples/second and one-hour files; and (2) event
recording with a sampling rate of 500 samples/second and one-minute files.
To study the seismic activity in the area of Santa Luzia was installed a local
network of stations in 2007 whose results are presented in this paper. The activity
persisted with less frequency after the 2007 campaign, but a new seismic area was
detected near the town of São Caetano (Figure 3.2). On March 11, 2010, a 2.7 mR event
was recorded by a seismographic network, used for monitoring the local and regional
seismicity, with the nearest station localized 45 km west of the epicenter, in São Caetano
county, near the town. In that new area a local network was deployed and operated from
September 15 to December 23, 2010. The new network was composed of seven short-
period three-component L4C3 sensors using a Reftek130 recorder. The network acquired
data at a sampling rate of 250 samples/second. The epicenters determined in both
campaigns, station locations, Santa Luzia village, São Caetano, and Caruaru counties are
shown in Figure 3.2. The daily activities during both swarms are shown in Figure 3.3.
The magnitude range of the events is from 0.5 to 3.7 mR.

3.3.2. Hypocentral determination
We used SAC (Tapley and Tull, 1991) to determine P and S arrival times and
polarities. The P-wave velocity (VP) and the ratio between P and S (k = VP/VS) were
determined using a half-space model, also used in previous studies in the region. In
addition, hypocenters were determined using HYPO71 (Lee and Lahr, 1975), which has
been successfully used in the region by previous studies (Ferreira et al., 1987, 1995, 1998
e 2008; Takeya et al. 1989). The Wadati diagram for both areas presented indicates that
the ratio between the velocities of P and S (VP/VS) waves were 1.688 ± 0.004 for the 2007
epicentral area and 1.689 ± 0.005 for the 2010 epicentral area. We used the composite
Wadati diagram (Kisslinger and Engdahl, 1973) with the 2007 (98 events) and 2010 (27
events) data (Figure 3.4) to verify the consistency of the readings and to determine the
VP/VS ratio due to the proximity between the two epicentral areas. The determined VP / VS
ratio was = 1.69. We carried out a search between VP=5.0 km/s and VP=6.4 km/s to
obtain the velocity value and we found the best value on VP = 5.90 km/s. These values of
VP/VS and VP presented the lowest mean squared horizontal and vertical errors during
hypocenter determinations using the program HYPO71.
The epicenters of the 2007 and 2010 series, using HYPO71, and the system of
shear zones in the area are presented in Figure 3.2. We also applied a double-difference
algorithm with the hypoDD code (Waldhauser and Ellswort, 2000; Waldhauser, 2001) to
relocate the best events, that will be defined in section 4, and determine the focal
mechanism. This algorithm requires that the distance between two events is much less
than the distance between these events and a recording station. The results with hypoDD
were used in the focal mechanism determination.

3.3.3. Focal mechanism
We used FPFIT (Reasemberg and Oppenheimer, 1985) to determine the focal
mechanisms from the 2007 and 2010 seismic sequences. The FPFIT program performs
a grid search to find the solution that minimizes a weighted sum of discrepancies in the
polarities, considering both the estimated variance of the data and the theoretical P-
wave radiation amplitude. The focal mechanism solutions determined in this study took
into consideration the hypocentral distribution (dip and strike) along the fault plane
obtained with FPFIT. We used only high-quality P-wave polarities.

3.4 - Results
The epicenters, firstly determined with HYPO71, are shown in Figure 3.2. The
2007 earthquakes occurred over an NE-trending branch of Pernambuco Lineament,
whereas the 2010 epicenters occurred along the main E-W-trending Pernambuco
Lineament.
We selected 14 events (Santa Luzia cluster) from 214 events of the 2007 dataset to
determine the focal mechanism, with the arrival-time residuals (rms) ≤ 0.01s, vertical
error (erz) ≤ 0.1 km, horizontal error (erh) ≤0.1 km, the largest azimuthal separation in
degrees between stations (gap) ≤ 180º, and the number of P and S readings (NO) ≥ 10.
We selected 13 events (São Caetano cluster) from the 27 events of the 2010 dataset with
rms ≤ 0.02 s, erh ≤ 0.2 km, erz ≤ 0.2 km, gap ≤ 180º and NO ≥ 08.
The selected hypocenters were relocated using hypoDD before using the FPFIT.
We performed a visual P-wave cross-correlation for the clusters of 2007 and 2010, as
shown in Figure 3.5 (JO station of 2007 and PS station of 2010), to get more accurate
relative arrival times. Similar waveforms at a common station, for example, JO for 2007
cluster, as shown in Figure 3.5a, indicate that the focal mechanisms are virtually
identical. The same is valid for the 2010 cluster (Figure 3.5b). The relocated hypocenters
and focal mechanisms for the Santa Luzia (2007) and São Caetano (2010) clusters are
presented in Figure 3.6a and 7a, respectively.

Figure 3. 5- The waveform correlation of P wave from earthquakes selected for focal mechanism in Santa Luzia (2007) recorded at station JO and São Caetano (2010) recorded at station PS.
The focal mechanisms were obtained using FPFIT. The solution for the 2007
dataset is the following: strike of 64°±15°, dip of 51°±15°, and rake of -142°±15°. The
2010 dataset presented the following results: strike of 261° ±12°, dip of 77°±6°, and rake
of -96°±11°. It is important to note that the FPFIT solution is the best statistical result.
However, this solution should be adopted with a critical analysis (Reasemberg and
Oppenheimer, 1985). Strike and dip can be determined assuming that all earthquakes are
in the same plane. The values obtained for strike and dip of the best fitting plane to
hypocenters were s=74° and d=60° (2007), and s=265° and d=79° (2010). The
projections of hypocenters over vertical planes parallel and normal to the strike direction

are shown in Figure 3.6 (2007) and Figure 3.7 (2010). Stations with alternating polarities,
which indicate proximity to one of the nodal planes, were used to aid rake determination.
The mechanisms are shown in Figure 3.6c and 7c, for the 2007 and 2010 clusters,
respectively.

3.5 - Discussion
The seismic activity in 2007 occurred along a fault ~ 4 km long (Figure 3.2) with a
depth ranging between 2 and 8 km in a NE-trending branch of the Pernambuco shear
zone. The geological map (CPRM, 2008) shows that this shear zone had a transcurrent
left-lateral slip during the Brasiliano. It exhibits steeply dipping mylonitic foliation
toward the SE, which coincides with the focal mechanism solution. The present
seismicity, however, shows right-lateral movement. The events of the 2010 cluster are
located in the main EW-trending Pernambuco shear zone and occurred close to the urban
center of São Caetano. The main shear zone presented dextral strike-slip kinematics
during the Brasiliano(CPRM, 2008). The focal mechanism of São Caetano indicates,
however, that this fault reactivation had a normal movement. It is clear that old shear
zones are not necessarily reactivated with the same past kinematics because the
movement depends on the present day state of stress that can be different from a past one.
The length of the faults of Santa Luzia and São Caetano clusters were,
respectively, 4 and 2.5 km in accordance with the maximum observed magnitudes (4.0
mR and 2.7 mR). All reactivated segments of the Pernambuco Lineament were larger than
those observed in Caruaru 1991 (2 km, Ferreira et al., 1998), Belo Jardim in 2004 (2 km,
Lopes et al,. 2010) and São Caetano in 2010 (2.5 km, this paper). Although the
Pernambuco Lineament has a large extension (nearly 700 km) only small segments have
been reactivated until now.
The seismogenic faults presented in this study are similar to the ones presented by
previous studies along the same shear zone. The 2007 seismicity described in the present
study is similar to the one that occurred in 2002 in the city of Caruaru, 20 km to the east
of São Caetano (Ferreira et al., 2008). These faults occurred along NE-trending branches
of the Pernambuco shear zone. In addition, the 2010 seismicity of São Caetano is similar
to the one described in the city of Caruaru in 1991 (Ferreira et al,. 1998, 2008) and near
Belo Jardim (Lopes et al., 2010), both along the EW-trending belt of the Pernambuco
shear zone. In all cases, the mylonitic fabric of the basement has been the structure that
controlled seismicity.

45
Northeastern Brazil concentrates most studies that include local seismic networks
which generated good hypocenters and focal mechanism determinations. This is
necessary to discuss the correlation between seismicity and geological features. There are
few cases in Brazil of clear correlation, between seismicity and large lineaments such as
shear zones. The correlation of intraplate seismicity with geological features, such as the
Pernambuco Lineament, is not the rule, but the exception (Bezerra et al., 2011).
Ferreira et al. (1998, 2008), Lopes et al. (2010), and this work showed that some
small segments of the Pernambuco Lineament have been reactivated. Other examples
exhibit similar patterns. The seismicity of the Colorado Lineament (Herrman et al., 1981;
Brill and Nuttli, 1983) suggests that earthquakes are associated with certain segments of
the major structure, each of which has a different level of seismicity (Brill and Nuttli,
1983). In India there are also examples of correlation between seismicity and lineaments,
but again confined only to some segments of the major structure (Kayal and De, 1991).
Schulte and Mooney (2005) showed the importance of rifts formed during the separation
of the continents to intraplate seismicity, such as in the New Madrid area. In the
Borborema Province the best known case of rift related with seismicity is Potiguar Basin
(Figure 3.1). However, the seismicity in this case, does not occur within the rift, but in
the shallower parts of the horst (Ferreira et al., 1998). This phenomenon has also been
observed, elsewhere in other areas, such as in the intraplate part of the United States
(Dewey, 1988). Our study indicates that although the Pernambuco Lineament had active
participation in the formation of the Jatobá Basin (Figure 3.1), this basin and related rift
faults exhibit aseismic behavior. It follows that the Pernambuco Lineament and its NE-
trending branches are not optimally oriented for brittle reactivation under the present-day
stress field. It would imply that these faults are very weak or that they have been
reactivated in the presence of high-fluid pressure (Sibson, 1990).
3.6 - Conclusions
The correlation between seismicity and geological features mapped in intraplate
South America is still a matter of debate. The seismic activity studied in this paper (Santa
Luzia, 2007 and São Caetano, 2010) are good examples of clear correlation between
geological features and earthquakes. The focal mechanisms of Santa Luzia and São
Caetano seismic areas, although having different kinematics, are both consistent with the

46
pattern of stress estimated for this region, which is characterized by EW-trending
compressional and NS-trending extension.
Magnitudes have been higher and the length of active segments longer in the NE-
trending branches rather than over the Pernambuco Lineament itself. Until now only
magnitudes below 3.2 mR have occurred over the main EW-trending lineament.
The segment of the Pernambuco Lineament associated with the limit of the Jatobá
Basin and the interior of the basin have, at the moment, aseismic behavior. The
Pernambuco Lineament and its NE-trending branches are not optimally oriented for fault
reactivation under the present-day stress field. It indicates that faults along the
Pernambuco Lineament are very weak or that they were reactivated in the presence of
elevated fluid pressures.

Abstract
The Pernambuco Lineament is an E-W-trending, 700-km long shear belt located in the
central part of the Borborema Province, Brazil. Seismic swarms have been monitored
since 1991 and they exhibit a clear correlation with the main shear belt and its NE-
trending branches, which have been interpreted as the brittle reactivation of this
structure. A new sequence of small earthquakes occurred in April 2010 in the southern
block of the lineament and away from the main belt. We analyze this new sequence of
events and its implications for the present-day stress field and the Pernambuco
Lineament and its vicinities reactivation. We monitored the seismicity using a ten station
network during 154 days. Our results indicate that seismicity concentrates in three
clusters, two of which are normal faults: the first presents strike 96º, dip 51º, and rake -
65º and the second shows strike 253º, dip 64º and rake -120º. These faults have no
correlation with the Pernambuco Lineament, neither its NE-trending branches.
These faults are 2.2 km and 1.5 km long and 2.0-3.0 km and 3.0- 3.5 km deep,
respectively. The inversion of focal mechanisms from our investigation and previous
studies indicate a E-W-trending compression and N-S-trending extension, which affects
both the northern and southern blocks of the PeL. In south block although there are
shear zones identical to those of the north block these are not reactivated and south
block seismogenic faults may be associated with structures formed in the Cretaceous
although not visible in the field.

4.1. Introduction
Brazil is located in the eastern part of intraplate South America and it has been
characterized by earthquakes up to 6.2 magnitude and VII MM of maximum intensity
(Berrocal et al., 1984, Ferreira et al., 1998; Barros et al., 2009). Among the main
seismic areas of the country is Borborema Province, in northeastern Brazil. Over the
past forty years the seismic activity in this region has been characterized by events that
reach magnitudes of up to 5.2 mb and intensity VII MMl (Berrocal et al., 1984;
Assumpção, 1992.1993; Ferreira et al., 1998), which generally occur as swarms of
earthquakes that can last more than 10 years, with some cases with over 1,000 events
per day. This characteristic of seismic activity, coupled to the existence of large
numbers of outcrops of Precambrian basement, allows for the study of seismic activity
with local networks and portable seismographic stations that can obtain clear records of
P and S waves (Ferreira et al., 1998).
One of the most active areas in the Borborema Province is related to the
Pernambuco Lineament and its NE-trending branches. The Pernambuco Lineament is a
ductile Brasiliano (740-540 Ma) shear zone more than 700 km long (Figure 4.1)
(Davison, et al., 1995). This shear zone and many others in the region were reactivated
in a brittle mode in the Cretaceous during the breakup between South America and
Africa (Matos, 1992; De Castro et al., 2008, 2012). It follows that several seismic
swarms have been reported along this shear zone and its NE-trending branches area
since the nineteenth century. In recent years, seismic swarms have occurred in Caruaru
(Ferreira et al., 1998, 2008), Belo Jardim (Lopes et al., 2010) and São Caetano counties
(Lima Neto et al., 2013).

The sedimentary basins in the figure: PaB - Parnaíba, PbB – Paraíba, PeB – Pernambuco, and JaB – Jatobá (Almeida et al. 2000 and Brito Neves et al. 2000). Red circles are epicenters of earthquakes from Brazilian Seismic Bulletin catalogue from 1720 to 2010.
These studies showed that the seismic activity in each of the epicentral areas
was related to the Pernambuco Lineament or its NE-trending branches. These
examples have been reported as a classical case of brittle reactivation of preexisting
fabric, which have behaved as weakness zones (Bezerra et al., 2011). However, in
2010 new sequences of events occurred in the southern block of the Pernambuco
lineament and away from the main E-W-trending mylonitic belt and its NE-trending
branches. These new sequences of earthquakes do not behave in the same
reactivation pattern described by previous studies and indicate that the interplay
between seismicity and preexisting structures in the area is more complex that
previously indicated.
The present study is the first to be performed with a local network of
seismographic stations in areas located to the south of the Pernambuco Lineament. The
first felt earthquake of the new sequences of events occurred on April, 18, 2010 with
magnitude 2.8 mR (Brazilian regional scale, Assumpção, 1983) and intensity VI MMI.

This event caused panic in the Belém de Maria town and in the village of Lajes de São
José (Cupira county, Figure 4.2). This study shows the results of the campaign carried
out from April, 21, 2010 to August, 10, 2010. Our study confirmed the existence of three
seismic areas, being the main area located in Cupira county and the others seismic
areas in the counties of Agrestina and Lagoa dos Gatos.
The objective of this study is to investigate those new seismic areas to the south
of the Pernambuco Lineament.
We show detailed hypocentral location, focal mechanisms, and the regional
stress pattern. Our study indicate that the new seismic swarms cut across preexisting
fabric, but follow the same stress pattern observed in the previous studies. We also
show the complexity associated with intraplate seismicity and the importance of the
stress field determination.

The maximum errors for both datasets are rms ≤ 0.03s, erz ≤ 0.3 km, and 0.3 ≤ erh km. The cluster located south of Lagoa dos Gatos was not used because hypocenter errors are larger due to the arrangement of the distribution of the stations, but are shown in the figure for spatial visualization of these earthquakes in the region.

4.2. Seismo-tectonic setting
The Borborema Province (BP), located in the northeastern part of the South
American Continent, is an intraplate area 900 km long and 600 km wide, which is limited
to the west by the Parnaíba Basin, to the east by coastal basins, and to the South by
the São Francisco Craton (Figure 4.1). The BP encompases Archean, Paleoproterozoic,
and Neoproterozoic terranes, which were formed or reworked during the Brasiliano
orogenic cycle at 750-540 Ma (Almeida et al., 2000; Brito Neves et al., 2000). The BP is
deformed by a system of ductile shear zones, which mark the boundary between most
of these terranes. The coastal zone encompasses several Cretaceous basins formed
during the breakup between South America and Africa (Matos, 1992; De Castro et al.,
2012).
The main geological features of BP in the south are the Patos (PaL) and
Pernambuco (PeL) lineaments (Figure 4.1), which were formed during the Brasiliano
oregenic cicle. Both lineaments have approximate EW direction.
The Cretaceous sedimentary basins along the continental margin and inside de
BP were formed due to the brittle reactivation of the major ductile lineaments during the
Pangea breakup (De Castro et al., 2008, 2012). Three major sedimentary basins were
formed along the PeL: the Jatobá basin and the limit between the Paraíba and
Pernambuco basins (Figure 4.1) (Matos, 1992; Lima Filho et al., 2006).
The PeL and its ramifications are among the most seismic areas of BP (Ferreira
et al. 1998, 2008, Lopes et al., 2010, Bezerra et al., 2011, Lima Neto et al., 2013),
whereas the PaL is considered practically aseismic. The seismicity associated with the
PeL and its vicinity has been known since the early nineteenth century (Ferreira and
Assumpção, 1983) being the most active area located between 100 and 180 km west of
Atlantic the coast (Figure 4.1). In 1967 a sequence of earthquakes, whose main event
reached magnitude 3.8 mR and intensity V MM, caused panic and flight of the

population of Caruaru (Ferreira and Assumpção, 1983). The event of greater magnitude
(4.0 mR) occurred in São Caetano in 2006 (Lima Neto et al., 2013) and reached the
intensity VI MM.
4.3. Methods
4.3.1. Data Acquisition
The data acquisition was initiated on April, 21, 2010 when we deployed a
network with six seismographic stations. Four stations more were installed after two
weeks. This local seismographic network operated until September, 22, 2010 with ten
stations belonging to PegBr (Pool of Geophysical Equipments of Brazil) and were
provided with short-period seismometers three-component L4C3 model. All stations
used Reftek130 recorder and rate sample of 250 samples per second. The epicenters
recorded in the study area, the station locations, and the location of headquarters of the
Belém de Maria, Cupira, Agrestina and Lagoa dos Gatos counties are shown in Figure
4.2. The daily activity during deployment is shown in Figure 4.3.
4.3.2. Hypocentral determination
We used the software SAC - Seismic Analysis Code - (Tapley & Tull, 1991) to
determine P and S arrival times and polarity. A half-space model was assumed as in
other previous studies in the Borborema Province, due to the fact that the stations were
deployed directly over granitic/gneissic outcrops (Ferreira et al., 1987, 1995, 1998,
2008; Takeya et al. 1989). In addition, hypocenters were determined using HYPO71
(Lee & Lahr, 1975).
We need to determine the velocity model for the region before the hypocentral
determination. We used the Wadati diagram (Kissslinger & Engdahl, 1973) in Figure 4.4
to verify the consistency of the readings and the VP/VS ratio for 31 events (totaled 151

59
data - P and S readings) selected that was well recorded by the network. The
determined VP/VS ratio was 1.71. We carried out a search between VP = 5.0 km/s and
VP=6.4 km/s to obtain the best velocity value and we found VP = 6.0 km/s. These values
of VP/VS and VP presented the lowest mean squared horizontal and vertical errors
during hypocenters determination using the program HYPO71.

The epicenters of events recorded in this campaign, and the Gravatá-Açu and
Jurema shear zones in the area are presented in Figure 4.2. We also applied the
double-difference algorithm with the HYPOODD code (Waldhauser and Ellswort 2000;
Waldhauser, 2001) to relocate the best events and find the fault planes.

Figure 4. 4 - The compound Wadati diagram for the earthquakes determined using 31 events and 151 data (squares). The best fit (solid line) corresponds to the ratio VP / VS of 1.710 (± 0.005).
4.3.3. Focal Mechanism
We use the FPFIT program (Reasember and Oppenheimer, 1985) to determine
the focal mechanism. We used only high-quality P-wave polarities to obtain the solution
of the composite focal mechanisms. The FPFIT performs a grid search to find the
solution that minimizes a weighted sum of discrepancies in the polarities, considering
both the estimated variance of the data and the theoretical P-wave radiation amplitude.
The focal mechanism solutions determined in this study took into consideration the
hypocentral distribution (dip and strike) along the fault plane obtained with FPFIT.
Tese de Doutorado – PPGG –UFRN Lima Neto, H.C.
61
For Agrestina area, in which there was little data, we used, in addition, the
program FOCMEC (Snoke, 2003) , wich uses, besides the P wave, S wave and the
ratio of amplitudes between different phases (Kisslinger, 1980; Kisslinger et al., 1982).
4.3.4. Stress tensor
We used the code gridfix of Michael (1984, 1987) for the inversion of focal
mechanisms. This method assumes that the slip direction of the earthquake rupture is
given by the ambient shear stress in the fault plane, which is usually thought to be a
valid assumption. The mismatch between slip and shear directions in the fault plane can
be due to either a non-uniform stress field or errors in the fault-plane solution. The
inversion was carried out by minimizing the difference between the observed rake
direction and the calculated (theoretical) rake direction. A grid-search method was used
to find the directions of the three principal stresses (S1, S2 and S3) and the shape factor
φ= (S2–S3)/ (S1–S3), where S1 = SHmax and S3 = Shmin.
4.4 – Results
4.4.1 – Determination of hypocenters
The results of HYPO71 show that seismic activity was concentrated in three
clusters (Figure 4.2): (1) the main cluster (Serra Verde-SV) is located near Serra Verde
village, belonging in the Cupira county, near the LJ station; (2) the second cluster (Barra
do Chata - BC) is located near Barra do Chata village in the Agrestina county, between
stations CR and UB; (3) and the third cluster (Lagoa dos Gatos - LG) is located to the
south of Lagoa dos Gatos town, near the SC station. It was not possible to have a good
distribution of stations in the LG cluster area due to heavy rains and a flood that
destroyed the roads. Therefore, the errors in hypocentral determination of the LG
cluster were very lot.

62
4.4.2 - Focal mechanisms
To obtain the composite focal mechanisms of Serra Verde and Barra do Chata
epicentral areas, we selected fifteen events from the SV area and eight events from the
BC area. These events in both areas had arrival-time residuals (rms) ≤ 0.02s, vertical
error (erz) ≤ 0.2 km, horizontal error (erh) ≤ 0.2 km, the largest azimuthal separation in
degrees between stations (gap) ≤ 180º, and the number of P and S readings (NO) ≥ 08.
The selected hypocenters were relocated using HypoDD before the use of
FPFIT. We performed a visual P-wave cross-correlation for the SV and BC clusters, as
shown in Figure 4.5 (LJ station for events of SV cluster and UB station for events of BC
cluster), to obtain more accurate relative arrival times. Similar waveforms at a common
station indicate that the focal mechanisms are virtually identical, as shown in Figure 4.5.
The relocated hypocenters and focal mechanisms for the Serra Verde and Agrestina
clusters are presented in Figure 4.6(a) and Figure 4.7(a), respectively.
The free FPFIT solution for the SV dataset is the following: strike of 105° ± 14º,
dip of 60° ± 16°, and rake of -58°± 13º. The BC dataset presented the following results:
strike of 230º ± 28º, dip of 65º ± 15º, and rake of -125º ± 17º. It is important to note that
the FPFIT solutions are the best statistical results. However, these solutions should be
adopted with a critical analysis (Reasemberg and Oppenheimer, 1985). Strike and dip
can be determined assuming that all earthquakes are in the same plane. The
projections of hypocenters over vertical planes parallel and normal to the strike direction
are shown in Figure 4.6 (Serra Verde) and Figure 4.7 (Barra do Chata). The values
obtained for strike and dip of the best fitting plane to hypocenters were s=96° and d=51°
for Serra Verde fault, and s=253° and d=64° for Barra do Chata fault. The stations with
alternating polarities, which indicates proximity to one of the nodal planes, were used to
determine fault rake.

64
The focal mechanisms are show in Figure 4.6(c) and Figure 4.7(c), for the faults
of Serra Verde and Barra do Chata. The focal mechanism proposed for the Serra Verde
seismogenic fault has the approximate EW azimuth, dipping to south, with normal
movement. The focal mechanism proposed for the Barra do Chata seismogenic fault
has the azimuth approximate EW, dipping to north, with normal movement. It was not
possible to get a reliable focal mechanism for LG cluster because of the errors in
hypocenter determination and poor distribution of stations.
4.4.3 - Regional Stress
In this work we show the updated stress field in the Pernambuco Lineament area
and its neighborhood with the inversion of seven focal mechanisms (Table 1 and Figure
4.8). In all studied cases the focal mechanisms had know fault plane determined by the
hypocentral distribution. As the earthquakes in the region are less than 9 km deep and
the study area is approximately a square of 55 x 55 km, the crustal stresses are
restricted to vertical and horizontal directions. Estimates of the direction of stresses in
the Borborema Province were presented earlier by Ferreira et al. (1998) and Lopes et
al. (2010).The latter studied the same area, which is the focus of this paper.
Figure 4.9 shows the best fit to the seven observed rakes and the values of
azimuth/plunge of S1 and S3 and Table 2 presents their related misfit parameters. The
focal mechanisms were fitted with an rms error of 2 º- and the directions of the
maximum and minimum stresses, both of which were found to be horizontal (S1 =
SHmax and S3 = Shmin). They indicate a strike-slip regime with a nearly E-W deviatoric
compression and a nearly N-S deviatoric extension. The best-fitting shape factor φ for
the PeL area was 0.6, which implies that the E-W compression (S1–S2) is slightly
stronger that the N-S extension (S2–S3).

To estimate the uncertainties of the stress tensor we made a grid search using a
few tens of resamples of the mechanism parameters (strike, dip and rake) for the seven
focal mechanisms selected. These multiple resamples were obtained by random choice
from the original group of the focal mechanisms parameters in 10º, and also by
changing the nodal plane and rake for the mechanisms. In Table 2 the column ‘range’
shows the maximum deviations in the S1 (and S3) orientations. The error in the form
factor was obtained in a similar way.
The first estimate of the direction of the regime's stress in the area of NE Brazil
was carried out by Ferreira et al. (1998). In the Pernambuco Lineament area Lopes et
al. (2010) made an estimate of the direction of the main stress in the area of
Pernambuco Lineament. We made an update of the regime's stresses for the PeL area
with the focal mechanism determined by Ferreira et al. (1998, 2008), Lopes et al. (2010)
and with the new focal mechanisms found in the areas of Santa Luzia (2007) and São
Caetano (2010) presented by Lima Neto et al. (2013), and the focal mechanisms of
Serra Verde and Agrestina presented in this study (Figures 4.6 and 7).

4.5. Discussion
The seismic activity in the locality of Serra Verde village, in the Cupira county,
showed the existence of a seimogenic zone that have approximately 2.0 km long with a
depth ranging between 1.5 and 3.0 km. This area is located near the extremity of the
Gravatá-Açú shear zone. The Serra Verde seismogenic fault strikes E-W and presents
normal movement. This fault does not coincide in strike and location with the ductile
Gravatá-Açu shear zone (CPRM & DNPM, 2001). Therefore, our study indicates that
the two normal faults identified are not the brittle reactivation of ductile shear zones.
However, the Serra Verde fault, as shown in Figure 4.6a, coincides with an E-W-
trending topographic negative anomaly. Likewise, Figure 4.7a indicates that an E-W-
trending topographic anomalies of a nearby river coincide with the Barra do Chata
seismogenic fault strike. We suggest that both seismogenic faults could be the
reactivation of preexisting faults of possible Cretaceous age.
In the Lagoa dos Gatos cluster was not possible to obtain the focal mechanism,
but we can say that these recorded events are spatially in a region where there are no
faults mapped, so this is another area where it is not possible to correlate the seismicity
with mapped faults as shown also in Figure 4.2.
The focal mechanisms for the clusters of Serra Verde and Barra do Chata are
consistent with the scheme of stress in the region with N-S extension and E-W
compression as shown by Ferreira et al. (1998), Lopes et al. (2010), and this study.
The Pernambuco Lineament and its NE-trending branches , on the north of the
lineament, have been considered as a special case, where earthquakes are clearly
related with structures observed on the surface, such as shown in other studies as
Caruaru (1991, Ferreira et al. 1998), Caruaru (2002, Ferreira et al. 2008), Belo Jardim
(2004, Lopes et al. 2010), Santa Luzia (2007, Lima Neto et al .2013) and São Caetano

branches were reactivated and are exceptions in terms of seismic activity when
compared to other major lineaments and shear zones in Brazil (Bezerra et al. 2011).
However, this study shows that the idea of correlation between seismicity and
geological features is not valid for the southern block of Pernambuco Lineament. Both
the Serra Verde and Barra do Chata seismogenic faults do not clearly correlate with
ductile shear zones (Figure 4.2).
The result of inversion of seven focal mechanisms shows a compression nearly
E-W and an extension nearly N-S (Figure 4.9). The principal directions of stress are in
accordance with average estimates of Ferreira et al. (1998) and Lopes et al. (2010), and
the results presented in this work provides more details on the regional stress pattern.
The SHmax direction obtained in our study shows good agreement with theoretical
models of stresses in the South America plate, as in Coblentz and Richardson (1996).
By the other hand, in the region, all mechanisms are normal or strike-slip with normal
component, which suggest that we have a strong extensional stress component.
Assumpção (1992) and Ferreira et al., (1998) discussed the effect of the continental
margin over the stresses in the Borborema Province. As Ferreira et al. (1998) proposed,
sediment loading at the continental shelf and continental rise coupled with subsidence
of the cooling oceanic lithosphere can generate large stresses (e.g. Cloetingh et al.
1984; Stein et al. 1989), producing extensional stresses normal to the coast in
peripheral bulge a few hundred kilometers inland. The Pernambuco and Paraíba basins
are in the eastern end of Pernambuco Lineament (Figure 4.1), and also occur offshore.
The relative effect of them is minimize the compressional E-W stress, wich justify the
focal mechanism in region.
From the point of view of seismicity we have three situations in the Southern of
Borborema Province: 1) the strong correlation between seismicity and the Pernambuco
Lineament, and its NE-trending branches in the north of lineament, 2) the lack of

72
correlation between of earthquakes and geological features mapped to south of
Pernambuco Lineament; 3) the behavior almost aseismic of the Patos Lineament.
No simple model can explain the intraplate seismic activity in general, unless the
existence of zones of weakness in the crust (Sykes, 1978). Under this view, the strong
correlation observed can be explained by considering the Pernambuco Lineament and
its NE-trending branches to north as zones of weakness. The next question is why to
south of the Pernambuco Lineament, the shear zones, with the same NE-SW direction,
under the same stress pattern are not reactivated. A possible explanation is that there
are southern zones of weakness younger and therefore more easily reactivated or that
the faults we describe in the present study are new. It follows that faults in intraplate
Brazil do not commonly use foliation planes as shear fractures, but have a range of
orientations to the local foliations. This may explains the range of seismogenic faults,
some of them not related to preexisting shear zones (Kirkpatrick et al., 2013)
4.6. Conclusions
The seismogenic faults of Serra Verde (SV) and Barra do Chata (BC) are small
and shallow. They present an active zone of 2.2 km and 1.5 km lenght, respectively,
and depth ranged from 2.0 to 3.0 km for SV and 3.0 to 3.5 km for BC, and both
seismogenic faults have fault plane in the approximate E-W-trending strikes with normal
movement. These faults are not the results of reactivation of the Precambrian ductile
shear zones, as observed in the main shear belt and its NE-trending branches in the
northern block of the PeL. However, we do not rule out the possibility that these faults
are the reactivation of preexisting Cretaceous faults, which have not been recognized in
the field. The stress field obtained with the inversion of focal mechanisms of focal
earthquakes from our investigation and previous studies indicate a general E-W-

movimento normal.
