Introduction A wearable, gestural interface that

augments the physical world around us with thedigital information.

Integrates the digital information into thephysical world and its objects, making the entireworld your computer.

Developed by Pranav Mistry, a PhDstudent in the Fluid Interfaces Group at the MITMedia Lab.

    Bridges the gapbetween

    the tangible and theintangible world.

It is a technologywhich aims at causingcomputers and othermachines to adapt to

    human needs.

    The current prototypecosts around $350.

    Genesis

The first gesture interface device wascreated by attaching some strings and

pulleys to the rollers of a scroll mouse.

Another exploration wasaimed at helping thedesigners and architects toimagine and draw objects in

    3- dimensions.

    The device was a pen

    that could draw in 3-dimensions.

Human mind is interested indynamic information, rather than

    in computing.

The next phase was to go theother way round, to paint thereal world with the digitalinformation

The key idea behind it was tofree the pixels from the confines

    of digital devices.

    Thus evolved the Head-Mounted Projector.

q Smart PhoneoAn internet enabled smart phone is

necessary to process the data.o As the smart phone is the open source, aprogram to process the data need to bedeveloped.o The software searches the web andinterprets the hand gestures.

q Color Markerso They are at the tips of the users

Fingers & help the camera torecognize the hand gestures.o The movements and arrangementsofthese markers are interpreted andthey act as instructions for the

    projectedapplication interfaces.

    Applications

    Getting Information About products.

    v Playing with paper

Why only computers, we canplay with papers.

We can take a part of adocument putting

over another paper and we canevenmodify the paper and print it.So the work flow is moreintuitive.

In a more dynamic way you canpinch the information on the

    paper to your system.

v Third EyeMultiple viewers can seedifferent things on a same

    display screen at the sametime.

A public sign board candisplay information in different

    languages at the same time.

We need not have the splitscreen in games now.

A public display can showsecret messages or patterns.

In the same movie theatre, people can see different end ofa suspense movie.

    Portable

Support multi touch and multi userinteraction

    Cost effective

    Limitations

Requires high speed internet whichis costly for general use.

    Post processing can occur however.

    There exists hardware limitations

    of the devices.

    Future

EnhancementsTo get rid of color markers.

To incorporate camera and projector inside mobilecomputing devices.

Whenever we place pendant- style wearable device ontable, it should allow us to use the table as a multi-touchuser interface.

Applying this technology in various interest like gaming ,

    education systems etc.,

    To have 3-dimensional gesture tracking.

To make sixth sense work as a fifth sense for the disabled

    person.

ConclusionImagination is the only limit for such technologies.

It is a sense that would give seamless and easy accessto the Meta information.

We can have our digital world with us wherever we goand we can start using any surface around us as aninterface.

Actually ,the hardware is not that hard to

manufacture. The open source software is going to bemade available.

So the technology can reach masses than staying to

    laboratories or environments.
