Origin of Name ~Saito~

Character “藤” were came from Fujiwara(藤原) clan they had very strong political power in Heian era. Since they were so strong, there were many Fujiwara people, so they made difference by added place name or job name to their name. But they wanted to show their origin was Fujiwara clan so they kept “藤” character in their name.

“斉” character came from the job called “斎宮頭(Saigugashira)”, which is work at dormitory fot vestal virgin princess serving at Ise Jingu Shrine, and their duty is taking care of those princess.

Origin of Name ~Saito~ Ⅱ

“SAI” the Character of “a variant form of a letter” is often called in Japan.”a varian form of a letter” is born form old era when there were not have the world processor and computer, even the printing,so people always made a misspell and misunderstood. For example there is one line missed or more and have not dot or more like this picture. So there are lots of spell like “斉藤”“斎藤”“齋藤”“齊藤”.

Origin of Name ~Otani~

This is the most mysterious name in our five name.   One possible hypothesis is their ancestors were some kind of

merchant and they made their name by putting “Ya 屋(shop)” after their merchandise or place name. In Meiji era, when they had to register their name, they took out change Character “屋” or change to “谷.” In Toyama, most of them took it out but in Akita and Osaka, they chose to change the character.

However, in that case, the pronounce should be “Ya”, not “Tani”, so maybe it made because they lived around the end(尾) of valley(谷).

Origin of Name ~Shima~

Long time ago, when most people didn’t have their family name, they decide their own last name themselves and usually they named after their living area. That is why there are so many name contain “Yama” or “Ta”.

In that case, “Shima” is maybe the name for people who live on the island or close to ocean. We can see many “Shima” live in Okinawa and this can be a confirmation for above hypothesis.

Tips: Japan is surrounded by ocean but there are much less name that contain “Umi” than “Yama” or “Ta.” That can be explained by same hypothesis because no one can live on the ocean!

Japanese Old Cardinal Direction

“Inui” means the direction of North-West, made by mixing “Inu” and “I (Inoshishi)” in Japanese old cardinal direction. There are many “Inui” in Hyogo prefecture since Hyogo is North-west of Kyoto, Japanese old capital.

Origin of Name ~Chin~

“Chin” is very unique name in Japan. Character 珍 or 陳 came from China and 沈 came from Korea.

For example,沈 壽官(Chin Jukan) is a member of famous ceramic artist clan “Chin” in Kagoshima and their ancestors were kidnapped from Korea during Toyotomi era.

These evidence are not contradicting the map.
