10 History

As a young man in Montreal, Fleuri Perron heard Bishop Grandin speak of Western Canadian settlements like St. Albert. At the age of 17, Perron first moved west to Egg Lake, 10 miles north of St. Albert, and then finally settled in St. Albert in 1896. For the next 30 years, Perron would have a significant impact on the community.

Once established in St. Albert, Perron bought several local businesses, including the Windsor Hotel, which he renovated extensively; the general store located on main street (now known as Perron Street); and at the turn of the century, he opened the Perron Brickyard, employing 20 local men and operating until 1932.

After working as a businessman and entrepreneur, Perron began his career in politics in 1904 by serving on the first St. Albert Town Council. He was elected as the second mayor of St. Albert in 1908 and served three terms. Additionally, Perron was the first Vice-President of the St. Albert Board of Trade, and the first President of the Alberta

French Canadian Association.

During this time, Perron continued finding new business opportunities. In 1912, he purchased the 30-foot St. The-resa paddle wheeler to give boat tours of the Sturgeon River and Big Lake area to local residents. The boat later moved to Lac St. Anne when the local water levels dropped too low.

Perron’s life and the city’s were drasti-cally changed when the Perron General Store was destroyed by fire in 1919. The fire was particularly devastating as the general store had served as a trading post for northern residents as far away as Athabasca, and as a casual meet-ing place for local residents. Following the fire, Perron opened a butcher shop across the street and rented another store in the mid 1920s on the site of his original General Store.

Although Perron left St. Albert for several years during an economic downturn in the 1920s, he eventually

As a young man in Montreal, Fleuri Perron heard Bishop Grandin speak of the Western Canadian Settlements. At the age of 17, Perron moved out west to Egg Lake, a settlement 10 miles north of St. Albert. Eventually, in 1896, Perron settled in St. Albert, where he would play a signicant role for the next 30 years.

The same year that he moved to St. Albert, Perron bought the Windsor Hotel and announced his plans to refurbish itextensively. In 1898, Perron and Cheri Hebert purchased the general store that sat on the main street (now known as Perron Street) just north of the river. At the turn of the century, Perron opened the Perron Brickyard, which employed 20 St. Albert men and remained in business until 1932.

In 1904, Perron began his political career as he served on the rst Town Council of St. Albert. He was elected the second mayor

of St. Albert, and served three terms beginning in 1908. Additionally, Perron was the rst Vice-President of the St. Albert Board of Trade, and the rst President of the Alberta French Canadian Association.

Perron also branched out into more unusual business ventures. In 1912, he purchased the 30-foot St. Theresa paddle wheeler to give boat tours of the Sturgeon River and Big Lake area to the local residents. The St. Theresa later moved to Lac St. Anne, when the St. Albert area water levels dipped too low.

In 1919, the Perron General Store, that Perron had owned independently since 1908, was destroyed by a re. This re was particularly devastating as the general store had served as a trading post for northern residents as far away as Athabasca, and a casual meeting place for local residents. Following this destruction, Perron opened a butcher shop across the street. Later on, in the mid 1920s, he rented a store from another St. Albert resident, on the site of his original General Store.

Although Perron had left the town for several years during the economic downturn during the 1920s, he eventually returned to live out his remaining years in St. Albert. Following his death in August of 1931, his son Eugene Perron continued the family tradition, and purchased the general store business that Fleuri Perron had been running for the last years of his life.

returned to live out his remaining days. Following his death in August 1931, his son Eugene Perron continued the family tradition and purchased the general store business that his father ran for the last years of his life.

The downtown district of St. Albert experienced a period of great expansion at the beginning of the 20th century. By 1908, the downtown area featured two banks and hotels, several retail and service outlets, as well as a blacksmith, drugstore, and butcher shop. In the following years, the Dawson Block was completed and housed a bakery, bank, millinery shop, a drug store, and many other businesses.

St. Albert’s main street was renamed Perron Street in 1967 to recognize the impact and influence that Fleuri Perron had on the local business community and St. Albert as a whole.

Today, the Perron District is the heart of St. Albert, featuring historical buildings, colorful festivals, the St. Albert Farmers’ Market, as well as numerous shopping, dining, and cultural attractions.
