Christmas in Vietnam is a grand party, especially

in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and the Vietnamese

Christmas celebrations here are like any other city in

the western world. The Christians in Vietnam attend

a Midnight mass on Christmas Eve and return home

to a sumptuous Christmas dinner. The Christmas

dinner usually consists of chicken soup while

wealthier people eat turkey and Christmas pudding.

On Christmas Eve, Vietnamese people in Hanoi and

Ho Chi Minh City, especially young people, like to

go into the city centre, where there is a Catholic

Cathedral. The streets are crowded with people on

Christmas Eve and in the city centre cars are not

allowed for the night.

People celebrate by throwing confetti, taking

pictures and enjoying the Christmas decorations

In Vietnam, Christmas was celebrated joyously with people

thronging city roads right from Christmas Eve, which is often more

important than Christmas Day!

hristmas is one of the four most important festivals of the Vietnamese year.

Traditional Vietnamese religions are Buddhism and the Chinese philosophies of Taoism

the Vietnamese are a fun-loving, sociable people and the various Vietnam festivals and events

are actually occasions for them to a gala time, all together. Christmas in Vietnam is a grand party.

Vietnam used to be part of the French Empire and

there are still French influences in the Christmas

traditions. Many Catholic churches have a big

nativity crib scene or ‘creche’ with nearly life size

statues of Mary, Joesph, baby Jesus, the shepherds

and animals. In some areas of Ho Chi Minh City,

usually in Catholic parishes, people have big crib

scenes in front of their houses and decorate the

whole street, turning it into a Christmas area! These

are popular for people to visit and look at the scenes.

Also like in France, the special Christmas Eve meal

is called ‘reveillon’ and has a ‘bûche de Noël’ (a

chocolate cake in the shape of a log) for desert.

Vietnamese people like to give presents of food and

at Christmas a bûche de Noël is a popular gift. Other

Christmas presents are not very common, although

some young people like to exchange Christmas

cards.

The Yuletide spirit of giving and sharing has been

embraced with an earnest by the Vietnamese.

Generous as they are, the Vietnamese give out

gifts and presents in plenty during the Christmas

celebrations in Vietnam. However, the children

are more keen to have their stockings and shoes

stuffed in with goodies from Santa’s bulging sack.

The European customs of Santa Claus and the

Christmas tree were popular and children would

leave their shoes out on Christmas Eve.

located to the west of Sanlitun bar street in the

northeast of Beijing. Yashow is surrounded by

the bars, restaurants and cafes of the Sanlitun

area, the hotest eating and drinking area for

tourists in the city.

Beijing Garden ofWorld’s Flowersspend a day with a loved one or your family. Beijing Garden of World’s Flowers is the largest botanical garden within the capital’s Fourth Ring Road. It covers an area of more than 40 hectares and has been awarded top marks as a tourist attraction.

There are 15 large greenhouses where you can enjoy a range of exotic flowers, plants and herbs in varying landscapes. The site offers a combination of sight-seeing, science, shopping and dining.There are outdoor gardens here too, such as the Japanese Garden, Dutch Garden and Austrian Garden. At the indoor gardens, you can enjoy a range of gardens, including traditional Chinese landscapes that feature reconstructions of temples and palaces that still stand today in various provinces of the Middle Kingdom.

You can also view a desert landscape with various cacti; there is also a hall of tropical plants where you can see banana trees and palm trees. And, there is a stunning selection of bonsai trees and gorgeous array of flowers.

Korean Treats to warm the winter season

Bungeo-ppang or ingeo-ppang, also known

as hwanggeum Ingeo-ppang (goldfish-shaped

bread), is made from wheat rice flour and

glutinous and is filled with red bean paste.

Bungeo-ppang carts can be seen all over the

streets of Seoul in winter and fill the crisp cold

air with a heavenly sweet aroma.

hoppang is a sign that winter has arrived in

Korea. Although there is no historical reason as to

why hoppang is a favorite winter snack, it rarely

appears among street fare during other seasons.

kneading the bread or putting the dough in the

Topokki is one of the most famous dishes in Korea. It has a very distinctive spicy, yet sweet flavor. Though garaetteok (long, white rice cakes) is traditionally served on New Year’s Day, it can be enjoyed year round in tteokbokki. In this famous dish, tteok (rice cake) is mixed with eomuk (fish cake), boiled fish paste and various fried items, and then is marinated with red pepper paste. The entire concoction is mixed together as it’s heated and served with a hot cup of broth (the water the eomuk was boiled in). Though it’s definitely a snack (or a light meal!) that you’ll find throughout the four seasons, the popularity of topokki skyrockets in the winter since it warms the body, fills the stomach, and seems to fight off the winter blues. Since it’s a dish that is enjoyed by people of all ages, you’ll find tteokbokki vendors on many busy street corners in Seoul, and especially in the Myeongdong and Jongno areas.

f you are in Japan during New Year, you can join the crowds doing hatsumode, the year’s first visit to a shrine or temple.

Hatsumode festivities are held at practically every shrine and temple across Japan.

At popular shrines and temples you can experience a festive atmosphere with food stands and many people lining up for a prayer at the main hall, purchasing lucky charms for a fortunate new year and disposing their lucky charms of the past year. Most atmospheric is a visit to a temple around midnight on New Year’s eve, when the temple’s bell is rung repeatedly.

Some of the most popular shrines and temples, such as Tokyo’s Meiji Shrine, Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha, Osaka’s Sumiyoshi Taisha and Kamakura’s Tsuruoka Hachimangu each attract more than a million visitors over the first few days of the new year. Expect to line up for more than an hour at the more popular hatsumode sites in order to reach the offering hall for a prayer.

Homes and entrance gates are decorated with ornaments made of pine, bamboo and plum trees, clothes and houses are cleaned.

On New Year’s eve, toshikoshi soba (buckwheat noodles), symbolizing longevity, are served. A more recent custom is watching the music show “kohaku uta gassen”, a highly popular television program featuring many of Japan’s most famous J-pop and enka singers in spectacular performances.

ground which is heated with hot rocks placed in

it. It’s filled up with baskets of

food, covered and then allowed

to cook underground. By the time

pork, chicken, kumara, pumpkin,

potatoes and stuffing. It’s been said

that there is nothing to compare

In December, Piazza Navona, Rome’s

famous Baroque square, is transformed into

a huge Christmas market. You’ll find stands

selling all kinds of Christmas sweets, toys,

nativity figures, decorations, and gifts. There’s

a merry-go-round and Babbo Natale, Father

Christmas, makes an appearance to delight

the kids. A large nativity scene is erected in

the square later in December too.
