The bustling city of Hong Kong was just a collection of fishing villages when claimed by Britain in 1842 following the First Opium War with China. This failed attempt by the Ching Dynasty to stop the British trading in opium led to Hong Kong being ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Nanking that year. The Kowloon Peninsula was handed over in 1860 and a 99-year lease on the New Territories, comprising the area north of Kowloon up to the Shenzhen River plus 235 outlying islands, was granted in 1898.

Under the unique principle of ‘One Country, Two Systems’, Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty on 1 July 1997 as a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. This arrangement allows Hong Kong to enjoy a high degree of autonomy, retaining its capitalist system, independent judiciary and rule of law, free trade and freedom of speech.

Hong Kong’s magnificent harbour has been the key to its development as a trading port and entrepôt for China, progressing through an industrial era to become a leading financial and services centre in Asia. The unique blend of eastern and western influences, matched by diverse attractions and stunning countryside, has also made Hong Kong Asia’s prime tourist destination.

Siu mei is a popular Cantonese food and specialty in Hong Kong. Often accompany with plain white rice or noodles, siu mei is served as one of the all times favourites and simple daily meal of Hong Kong people. Regardless at siu mei shops, restaurant or siu mei fast food stalls, variety of gravy dripping aromatic roasted siu mei that went through the roasting process of over 200 °C, is lined up in the transparent glass window, beckons all meat-lovers and barbecue enthusiasts for salivate feast! The most popular choice for siu mei is the sweet fragrantly roasted goose/duck(siu ngo/siu ngaap), sweet tenderly barbecued pork(cha siu), crispy roast pork(siu yuk) and suckling pig(siu yu jiu) ... The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most charming and colourful annual events that celebrates, among other things, harvest time with the biggest and brightest moon of the year.

The festival also commemorates a 14th Century uprising against the Mongols. In a cunning plan, the rebels wrote the call to revolt on pieces of paper and embedded them in cakes that they smuggled to compatriots.

Today, during the festival, people eat special sweet cakes known as “Moon Cakes” made of ground lotus and sesame seed paste, egg-yolk and other ingredients. Along with the cakes, shops sell colourful Chinese paper lanterns in the shapes of animals, and more recently, in the shapes of aeroplanes and space ships.

On this family occasion, parents allow children to stay up late and take them to high vantage points such as The Peak to light their lanterns and watch the huge autumn moon rise while eating their moon cakes. Public parks are ablaze with many thousands of lanterns of all colours, sizes and shapes.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival (2, 4-8 July) is a feast for the eyes, ears and senses that combines exhilarating competitions, traditional customs, colourful entertainment and a BeerFest to keep you lubricated! The excitement is intense as super-fit teams of men and women paddle furiously in international races staged in Victoria Harbour off the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.

Standing in the centre of the museum and greeting guests as they enter, is a full-sized replica of the bow of Admiral Zheng He’s treasure ship (Bao Chuan). Marvel and leam more about Admiral Zheng He’s voyages from China to the ‘Westem Ocean’ and his mighty fleet during the 15” century. An introduction to his voyages from China to the ‘Westem Ocean’ during the 15”‘ century is told through a short animated video in a modem open style theatre.

Be awed by the Jewel of Muscat, a replica of a 9th Century Arab dhow and learn about its reconstruction

and its historic voyage from Oman to Singapore.

A gift from the Sultanate of Oman to the Government and People of the Republic of Singapore, the Jewel of Muscat

is housed permanently at the Maritime Experiential Museum & Aquarium.

It is 18 meters long and 6 meters wide, built using 9th century Arab shipbuilding methods without using nails or

screws, but sewn together with coconut fibers. The

马斯喀特之宝(The Jewel of Muscat), 为一艘9世纪盛行的仿古阿拉伯帆船。并从阿曼制造，再远渡重洋、扬帆

远航到新加坡。

马斯喀特之宝为阿曼苏丹国赠予新加坡政府和人民的礼物。并将会永久性地收藏于海事博物馆及水族馆内展览。

以9世纪阿拉伯造船技术建造的马斯喀特之宝，长18米，宽6米，而且只用椰子纤维缝合，完全不用一钉一螺。

船只的主帆是经人工用亚麻编织而成的，而船上其他的帆则采用棕榈叶制成。

当这艘阿拉伯帆船建好之后，便耗时68天时间，3580海里航程，从阿曼苏丹国启航到达新加坡。

Namiseom Island was formed as a result of the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam. It is a half moon shaped (462,809m) isle, and on it is the grave of General Nami, who led a great victory against the rebels in the 13th year of the 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo (reign 1455 ~ 1468). Namiseom Island is 63 km away from Seoul in the direction of Chuncheon, and is famous for its beautiful tree lined roads. The island is 30 minutes away from Chuncheon and an hour away from suburbs of Seoul. Since it is not far from Seoul, many couples and families come to visit.

A special feature of Namiseom Island is that there are no telephone poles. This is because all electric wires were built underground to keep the natural feeling of the landscape. The complex is 553,560 square yards with chestnut trees and poplar trees around the isle. In the middle of the isle, there is a grass field about 316,320 square yards. It is composed of education and training facilities, camping sites, swimming pools and water-sports facilities for motorboats and water skiing. There is also a theme park with merry-go-rounds, a shooting range, roller skating rink, and there are lodging facilities such as resort villas and bungalows.

大三巴牌坊是天主之母教堂（即圣保禄教堂）正面前壁的遗址。

圣保禄教堂附属于圣保禄学院。该学院于1594年成立，1762年结束，

是远东地区第一所西式大学。1835年一场大火烧毁了圣保禄学院及其附属

的教堂，仅剩下教堂的正面前壁、大部分地基以及教堂前的石阶。自此，

这便成为世界闻名的圣保禄教堂遗址。本地人因教堂前壁形似中国传统

牌坊，将之称为大三巴牌坊。这座中西合璧的石壁在全世界的天主教教堂

中是独一无二的。

The Ruins of St. Paul’s refer to the facade of what was originally the Church of Mater Dei built in 1602-1640, destroyed by fire in 1835, and the ruins of St. Paul’s College, which stood adjacent to the Church. As a whole, the old Church of Mater Dei, St. Paul’s College and Mount Fortress were all Jesuit constructions and formed what can be perceived as the Macau’s “acropolis”. Close by, the archaeological remains of the old College of St. Paul stand witness to what was the first western-style university in the Far East, with an elaborate academic programme. Nowadays, the facade of the Ruins of St. Paul’s functions symbolically as an altar to the city.

涌出二池，储满清净香水。又见虚空中有九龙吐水、浴太子身。天人们奏着美妙动听的音乐，空中散下五色缤纷

的香花来供养太子，一时十方大地六种震动，一切众生俱感受到前所未有的欢乐。大型动态群雕“九龙灌浴”

就是再现了佛祖诞生的这一场景。

灵山梵宫：气势恢宏的建筑与宝相庄严的灵山大佛比邻而立，瑰丽璀璨的艺术和独特深厚的佛教文化交相辉映。

Located at the picturesque shore of Lake Tai, Wuxi. Lingshan is a cultural- rich grand scenic area themed on Zen Buddhism. The scenic area is consisting of Lingshan Grand Budhha, Baby Buddha Bathing Nine Dragon Square, Brahma Palace, the Great Screen Wall of Lingshan, Xiangfu Monastery and so on.

Lingshan Grand Budhha: Standing in the southern foot of little Lingshan, the giant Buddha statue is 88 m tall with measured from the lotus seat, which is 17 m taller than the Buddha on Leshan, and equivalent to the height of a thirty-storey building. As the up-to-date highest giant Buddha, the Grand Buddha eyes down from the mountain showing the Buddha’s features of mercy. Regardless near or far away, visitors seems in his concern-filled eyes.

Baby Buddha Bathing Nine Dragon Square:According to the Sutra of the Buddha’s Deeds in His Reincarnations, during the birth of Gautama Shakyamuni, the Four Heavenly Kings had appeared and congratulated Gautama’s mother Queen Maha Maya with hand her over the baby. The just born baby Gautama alleged to possess superhuman powers and abilities, was then stood without anybody helps and takes seven steps in each of the four compass directions, and at each step a lotus springs up, and proclaimed “I alone am the World-Honored One!” Then the Queen and her son were showered with perfumed blossoms, and two streams of sparkling water poured from nine naga(dragons) floating in the sky to bathe them. The Baby Buddha Bathing Nine Dragon Square is featured on the miracles of Gautama’s birth.

位于实蒙古自然保护区，距离古晋约24公里的实蒙古野生动物保护中心(Se-

menggoh Wildlife Centre)于1975年设立，并收留走失与失去母兽照料的幼

崽或是在森林内受伤、遭遇偷猎与非法饲养的野生动物。该保护中心总共收

留了将近1000种濒危的哺乳类、鸟类与爬行类动物，并在保护大自然上取得

了巨大的贡献。值得一提的是，那里红毛猩猩(orang utan)复育计划，既协

助红毛猩猩恢复求生本能的计划，才是致使这所保护中心闻名遐迩的关键。

然而另一方面，该保护区的计划由于执行得非常成功，红毛猩猩的数量越来

越多，以至该中心无法再容纳更多的红毛猩猩与其它的野生动物，而需要把

复育计划迁移至位于库巴国家公园(Kubah National Park)的马塘野生动物保

护中心(Matang Wildlife Centre)进行。

The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established in 1975 to care for wild animals which have either been found injured in the forest, orphaned, or were previously kept as illegal pets. The centre is situated within the boundaries of the Semenggoh Nature Reserve, approximately 24 km from Kuching.

The Centre has been a resounding success, caring for almost 1,000 endangered mammals, birds and reptiles from dozens of different species. However it is the orang utan rehabilitation programme that has made the Centre famous. In one respect, Semenggoh has been too successful – so many orang utan have been successfully reintroduced into the surrounding forest reserve that the forest’s carrying capacity has been reached, and rehabilitation activities have been transferred to the Matang Wildlife Centre, part of Kubah National Park.

(Kupo Terkan)，更是当地部落首领所居住的长屋，且是砂拉越最为古老的历史性

建筑物。那里的独特传统建筑风格不但得以保存，且仅距离古晋一个小时半的车

程。长屋的屋顶是由西米棕榈叶(sago palm leaves)编织而成，并可耐六年，而地

板则由一条条的竹筒系成，需每年更换一次。也因为这样，每当期限一到，比达

友人长屋就得进行整修。如今，现代式的长屋的屋顶都已铺上锌板。长屋的基柱

也改作婆罗洲盛产的钻石木(berlian wood)。其实比达友族使用钻石木有着很久远

的历史，钻石木是一种超高性能的硬木，即使时间推移，钻石木钻坚硬依然，且

耐久耐腐超过上百年。

Annah Rais Longhouse比达友人长屋Annah Rais Longhouse which is located in Padawan Small District, is another place of interest where visitors could witness the traditional way of life of the Bidayuh. The settlement, which has three rows of longhouses known as Kupo Sebak, Kupo Terkan and Kupo Sijo, is located nearby Sungai Annah. Kupo Terkan is especially built for the Tribal Leaders. The settlement is the oldest in Sarawak as it has existed more than 200 years ago. The traditional architectural design of the Bidayuh longhouses has continued to be preserved. This settlement is less than one and a half hours away from Kuching City. The roofs of the longhouses are made from dried sago palm leaves which can last for six years while the floorings are bamboo, with a life span of one year. As these natural products are not long-lasting, maintenance works have to be conducted after the stipulated life span. Nowadays, zinc roofs are used for repairs at times. The main pillars which formed the basic structure of the house are made from berlian wood that grow in abundance in the island of Borneo. The Bidayuh has used theberlian wood for a long time and the latter has withstood the passage of time, remaining strong until today and can expect to last for hundreds of years more.
