IntroductionSTATEMENT started as a beautiful quarterly publication for the iPad, embracing new digital formats and also the substance that new approaches have brought. The autonomy of the magazine allows me to provide a portal for the expression of personal views of fashion in China and around the world, which is crucial distinct from magazines under fashion-celebrity nexus. As described on the cover, this is an indie-fashion-magazine-from-China. By “indie”, we mean that it stands at the other side of celebrity culture. By “indie”,we mean that it always brings the attitude,or say, a statement made.

Founder My name is Yue Yuan. I spent my child-hood in Amoy, China, a large coastal city in southern China. This year while I’m living in Chicago, United States, I started ‘Statement’, because I wonder how the fashion statement I make could possibly inspire other people and their journey.

Editor’s letterA Tokyo Fashion Statement

March, 2013, spring time, I was preparing for the first issue of Statement. So when my cousin Wanling Lu invited me to Tokyo where she studies fashion design in Bunka Fashion College, I didn’t have to think twice. Tokyo-our style dream-is the place where people make the strongest personal statements. In this very first issue, I’m so glad to share a se-ries of photographs taken by my cousin and my friend Judy that document my far-and-wide wanderings in the fart east - Japan, the country I was visiting for the first time. Gets delightfully lost in translation with me!

STYLE-STATEMENT

IT’S ALL

MODERNIn modern fashion, the kimono has been invading the women’s clothing line, thus marrying the traditional and cultural with to-day’s minimalist approach.Staying in line with the year’s fascination with bold and bright prints, the kimono inspired cover ups or cardigans are splashed in vivid colors and pat-terns making them a style-statement that can uplift just about any look.If you’re in a mood to stylize your wardrobe with an inclusion of different ex-otic ethnic features, a kimono inspired blouse or sheer light-weight jacket will be a stunning addition. Below are some mod-ern kimono inspired fashion. May these be of help and inspi-ration for those seeking to blend traditional elements with the contemporary.

WHAT’S NEXT? (left bottom)Although trends such as color blocking or floral prints may float by on the surface current, un-derneath there is a deeper tide that pushes us to futuristic darkness. For S/S 2014, fashion designers including Stella McCartney,Celine and Giambattista Valli, have applied their very defined modern take on geometric shapes, ar-chitectural lines, and structures.

RUNWAY SHOW AT LARGE (right top)Drawing inspiration from the greatest structure, such as Egyptian pyramids, which is complex but at the same time very simple in geometry, Gareth Pugh’s collection creates bold, minimal-istic and unique pieces for modern women. The looks have been given a futuristic aes-thetic thanks to the modern materials and, of course, the contemporary silhouettes and tailor-ing.

Retro Geometry

Creatively making use of geometric pat-tern with repeated an-gular shapes, this re-invented kimono oc-cupies an interesting space between cas-ual and formal, vin-tage and modern.

Imagine a geisha wears leather, or knitwear. Isn’s that interesting? By us-ing these contemporary textures on traditional Japanese dress, designers put a modern spin on the history.

NEW COLORAccording to Pantoneview.com, the most popular color on the street of Tokyo this season is blue. “The preferred blue is often a cobalt blue or ultramarine - bright and vivid shades that very much this year's colors.” The look on the right page showcases a hint of Japanese-inspired style with classic cross-over top which contrasts against the newly popular bright blue perfectly. Posing as a warrior princess, she portrays a quirky, strong yet feminine spirit of an oriental royal soldier.

The Great Gatsby Style Flowing sleeves and exotically beautiful floral patterns, this amaz-ing 1920s Japanese style “flapper” has a theatrical appeal that are fit for those who like to make a statement.Interestingly, the outfits contrast beautifully with the historical indoor surroundings they are captured in.

“THE PIECES I WORE IN KYOTO WERE EXQUISITE-EACH ITS OWN WORK OF ART,” SAYS YUE. LAYERED, RICHLY EMBROIDERED VINTAGE KIMONO,WORN WITH FLORAL-PEARL HEADDRESS, SETS AN EPIC,TURN-OF-LAST-CENTURY MOOD.

Yue Yuan, 22, founder of Statement, just took the trip of our style dreams- to Japan with her dresses and camera. From Tokyo to Kyoto, she documented whole thing for Statement: every out-fit,every travel-fashion-shoot.

ravel is travel. Fashion is fashion. Why can’t we mix and match them up?

Who hasn’t dreamed of that scene from Sex and the City, when Carrie lands in Paris and steps out of the car looking incredi-

bly chic and in place. Or how the cast of four ar-rives in Abu Dhabi looking as though they just stepped out of Vogue while still maintaining suffi-cient respect to the customs of the country?

When life’s big moments happen, it’s awfully nice to be dressed for them. Travel means big to me, always been, always will. I’m so glad I was dressed up for it and used my camera to cap-ture those exotic fashion moments. The self-made fashion shoot - that document the sweet afternoons in either a parisan-style park or an-cient rock-strewn pathways, dressing my sweep-ing skirts or floral minis, just render the journey unforgettable.

estination this time is gorgeous Japan. This place was picture-perfect:the way the haze lingered in the morning, the cherry blossoms, the colors, the people. It was all magnificent. But forget the scenery, I was there to get a travel-fashion-shoot. So,what my thinking for this style journey?

ADD A LITTLE DRAMA TO YOUR LUGGAGE - AND YOUR JOURNEY.

Some extreme looks will appear best in photographs. Also, try the local traditional boutique - Japanese Kimono,India colorful patterns or Italian embroidered - during the trip. Nowadays we all strive to be pragmatists, but what fun is fashion if there is no room to dream? Ex-treme looks cases >next page

Put on the extreme one-piece, stand in front of the palace, and bam! A Travel-fashion-shoot is made.

Jane Birkin’s basket is my only handbag throughout. I use this to cre-ate an identi-ty,and to bal-ance those ex-treme clothes. To look extreme, fur is

definitely a choice.

Red throughout + long slip dress. Cam-era just loves them.

MY INSPIRATION

Black leather. The relective black emphasizes the intensity of your gaze.

Kimono inspires fash-ion,especially when the destination is Ja-pan.

TRAVEL LOG LIVING IN JAPAN

Typical Japanese Lifestyle My sister lives in Japan, and this is her apartment in Osaka. It’s enjoyable to live in a typical japanese apartment rather than a ho-tel, and to evolve in their everyday living.

Industry AgeFall’s ankle-length classics-softened to create a feminine silhouette-strike on an old-fashioned note, but the matching coat with generous lapels, falling shoulder seams and exag-gerated sleeves is strikingly modern. This is a mix of con-temporary and classic style, the same as the character of Osaka-a city both an-cient and modern.Dolce&Gabbana black

“My mother bought this dress from a Turkey merchant when she was young and modelled for my farther in it.When I was 18, I wore it during my trip to Paris, from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris to Chateau of Versailles. Now I bring it to Japan. We just need a piece of vintage dress like this, that can hold memo-ries from generation to gen-eration.”

A VINTAGE STORYThis elegant Islamic ornament pat-tern dress has the faded glamour of a favorite that’s been worn and worn until it’s washed out and soft-holding the memory of a cozy ram-ble in an old district of the city.

“BLEND IN” A BIT MOREWe love the idea of cultural immersion while traveling. What could be a more fun kind of cultural im-mersion than dressing as the locals do?I’m a Chinese girl,to be honest.

Wear color feminine and young.A new color palette. Electric green, prism pink, sun-light,red and whisper white.

WHERE DREAMS BLOSSOMThe lyrical and elegiac memory of early love in Japa-nese literature inspires the romantic return of opulent, feminine pieces that will continue to tell stories for sea-sons to come.

SYMBOLIC BANGNatural, loose, girly or free-spirited beauty. Audrey Hepburn, Linda Ronstadt or Jane Birkin. No matter which kind of look you de-sire, just lop off the front of your waves, and let a long blunt fringe tenderly framing your face.

In this photo, soft rosebud lips evoke timeless beauty.

SHIBUYA CROSSINGIt would be a shame to come to Tokyo and not take a walk across the famous teen fashion district outside Shibuya Station. After experiencing the "scramble," follow the trendy teens into Shibuya 109, a big shiny mall with more than 100 boutiques, for a look at the latest in disposable fashion.——Time

“IT ALWAYS BRINGS THE ATTITUDE,OR SAY,A STATEMENT MADE.”

STATEMENT MADE

UTILITY and romance might be the polar opposites but when served up on Yue’s look together they work, they really work. Yue wears army green fur-lined rebellion parka, and gauzy silk-and-chiffon petal-strewn dress underneath. Mix a rock ‘n’ roll attitude with soft as silk-chiffon, and bam! Statement made. This is a young girl who’s not satisfied with her innocence and is about to go wild.

DAY OFF CHICPhotographs are diary entries… That’s all they can be. At the same time, they drag the past into the present and also con-tinue into the future. A day’s occurrence evokes both the past and the future. That’s why I want to clearly date my pictures. - Nobuyoshi Araki February 10, 2012

WALKING DOWN TO THE SUBWAY, THE SOUND WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A LOW,ELECTRIC HUM. SHE FEELS THE TRAIN BEFORE SHE SEES IT. SHE LAYS HER SECRETS ON THE TRACKS AND WAITS. IT IS REALLY A FAR AND AWAY ADVENTURE.
