4.3. Presentation of the scientific/artistic goal of the above-mentionedworkandtheresultsachieved,togetherwithadiscussionoftheirpossibleuse.

4.3.1.Topicsofwork

The monograph entitled “The architecture of a place of play. Play as a factor ofintegrationof/intheurbanspace.”,publishedin2019bythePublishingHouseoftheWestPomeranianUniversityofTechnologyinSzczecin,isaresultofmylong-standinginterestinsocialaspectsoflandscapearchitecture,theinfluenceofspaceonhumanbehaviour,especiallythatofchildren,andanexpressionofconvictionthatthebasisofspatialsolutionsshouldbeagoodunderstandingofahumanbeingasanindividualandamemberofcommunity.

The research topic is theplaceofplay in the city space inevolutionary, typologicaland behavioural aspects and its importance both for an individual and for a socialgroup.Myintentionwastoexaminethepossibilitiesofusingtheintegrativepotentialofplayinshapingtheplaceofplayandthepublicspace.Theresearchwasbasedonthedefinitionofplayand itsessence, singlingout theconceptof theplayingspaceand place of play, as well as development of an original behaviour observationmethod leading to thediscoveryofplay-inspiring factors thatcauseplay toemergeandcontinue.

This study examined the relationships between landscape architecture, townplanning, socialandenvironmentalpsychologyandsociology.Inmyeyes, theplaceofplay is a sort of sensitivematrix inwhichwe can notice certain social attitudes. Atraditionalplaygroundwithequipment, designedforaspecificagegroup, maybeanattempt to manipulate a social group, control and influence their behaviour. Thisattemptmayindicatethatplayseenasbysocietyasasourceofchaosandathreattoorder. On theother hand, a placeof play arranged as a space that canbe createdindependently may indicate that the local community has matured to truedemocracy, wherethereisaplaceandreadinessforconsciousjointparticipationofindividuals in the public space. Its certain features and solutions may provokeexclusionfromthegroupandtheformationofaspecificsocialhierarchyonthebasisofphysicalcompetencesorstimulateintegrationatdifferentlevelsinspaceandwithspace. Place of play is by no means a simple set of devices, but a system ofrelationshipsbetween "spaceandbehaviour"havinganumberofpropertieswhichmakeupthearchitectureofaplaceofplay,i.e.specificwayofarrangementofspaceanditsfeaturesaswellasusersandtheirbehaviour.

Contemporarycitiesarefullofplacesofplay,which,althoughdesignedtoentertain,aredevoidofplay-inspiringfactors–theydonotentertainnorintegrate.Thismeansthatnoteveryplaceofplayisoneinitsessence.Manyplacesofplayarenothingbut

Therefore, a key part of the research was the study of the spatial-behaviouralstructure of selected places of play, including the study of the influence of spatialfeaturesofacontemporaryplaygroundonchildren'sbehaviouraimedatexplainingthemechanismsmakingaplaceofplay functionasaplay space. This researchwasstartedandcarriedoutintheUnitedStates,California,aspartofaresearchproject,whichwaspresentedafterforconsultationbyProf.PatsyEubanksOwens(UniversityofCalifornia,Davis).TheinvitationfromherandthecertificateofresearchIcarriedoutinCaliforniahaveprovidedmewiththeconvenienceandsafetywhenobservingusersofplacesofplay(mainlychildren)andcollectingdata.Iconductedthisresearchby my own, original method of observation, a kind of a 10-minute freeze-frame,basedona special form, whichwasa combinationof aquestionnaireanda classicbehaviouralmap.Theformwassodesignedtoallowmecollectingalargeamountofdataonmyownandrecordinginformationonthelocationofuserswithintheplaceofplayandformsof theirbehaviourandeventhedurationofactivity. Icollectedatotalof2212observations,whichIanalysedstatisticallyusingthePearsoncorrelationcoefficientandanalysisofvariance(ANOVA).Iusedthestudiesofspatial-behaviouralstructure to investigate the influence of selected spatial features on the playpotential (playability) of the zones identified in the analysed places of play and toidentifythefactorsmakingplayemergeandcontinueinaplaceofplay.

My research also included typological and evolutionary studies of places of play, which were aimed at explaining the direction of changes in the place of play andchangesintheperceptionofthephenomenonofplayinthepublicspaceofthecity(and the child’s location in the space). They led to the presentation of my owntypologyofplacesofplay, aswellastotheidentificationoftypesofplacesofplayinthe city. I have also attempted to relate the discoveredmechanismsof play in theplace of play to the public space. During my work, I have collected materialconcerning70placesofplay.Mostoftheplaces,asmanyas46,areexampleslocatedabroad(mainlyintheUnitedStates,butalsoinGermany,Denmark,NetherlandsandNorway).Asa result, a comprehensiveandmulti-threadedstudyhasbeencreated,whichshedsnewlightontheissueoftheplaceofplay.

4.3.2.Objectivesandcentralthesis

Thispaperpresentsresearchfocusedontheintegrativevalueoftheplaceofplay, towhich I attach particular importance in the era of ubiquitous commercialization, globalization and standardization and conditionsunderwhich it functions as a playspace. The research is aimed to determine the conditions for the use of theintegrativevalueofplayinshapingboththeplaceofplayandthepublicspaceandtodrawattentiontotheenormoussocialvalueofplacesofplayunderestimatedbythepublic.

Themainobjectivesofmyresearchwere:

1. Identificationoftheelementsofthespatialarrangementandspatialfeaturescalledthe architecture of place of play, which creates conditions for a place of play tofunctionasaplayspace.

2. Ialsodesiredtodeterminethepossibleuseofplayspaceasintentionallycreatedplaceendowedwithintegrativepotentialinshapingthepublicspace(conditionsforaplaceofplaytofunctionasaplayspace).

Thespecificobjectiveswereasfollows:

1. Analysisofplacesofplayinthecityspaceinevolutionaryandtypologicalterms,leadingtotheindicationofdirectionsofitsspatialtransformationsandsociety'sroleinthecontextofbothanindividualandasocialgroup(typologyofplacesofplay).

2. Analysis of places of play from a behavioural point of view, leading to theidentification of play-inspiring factors and mechanisms of the place-of-playfunction(typologyofplay-inspiringfactors).

Forthesepurposes,Ihaveformulatedanumberofauxiliaryquestions, suchas:Whatisplay, theessenceofplay, theplayspaceandtheplaceofplay?Whatdirectionofchange is indicatedby theevolutionof theplaceofplay in thepublic space?Whattypesofplacesofplay canbedistinguished in spaceandwhat is their value in thecontextoftheintegrativepotentialofaplaceofplay?Whatmechanismsandspatialfeatures (play-inspiring factors) create thephenomenonof play in space andmaketheplacesofplayexistasplayspaces?Whatistheintegrativeactionofaplayspace? They ultimately lead to the most important issue: What happens to public spacewhenitbecomesaplayspace?

BasedontheseobjectivesIdevelopedthefollowingthesis:

Identificationofawell-designedplaceofplay(i.e.aplacefunctioningasaplayspace)is possible thanks to the observation of: people playing (forms of play) and thearchitecture of the place of play, which is characterised by the presence of play-

inspiring factors in the form of specific spatial features and solutions. Thearchitectureoftheplaceofplay, understoodintermsofarrangementandfurnishingof space, hasadecisive influenceonwhetheragivenplaceofplaybecomesaplayspace. Play space is a product of the action of play-inspiring factors, i.e. featuresdirectlyrelatedtotheessenceofplay(playascommunicationandcreation),andisakindofspatialphenomenon,whichinvolvesamulti-facetedintegratingrole(inspaceandwithspace).Theessenceofplay is, in thiscontext,a factorof integrationof/inurbanspaceandcanbeconsideredabasisforshapingpublicspace.

4.3.3.Discussionofthemostimportantresearchresults

Theanalysedplacesofplaywereconsideredintermsof:

– evolution and typology – leading to the explanation of changes in how thephenomenonofplayisperceivedinthepublicspaceofthecity(andthechild'splace inspace), thedeterminationof thedirectionofchanges inplacesofplayandindicationofitsdifferenttypes,

– behaviour–aimedattheidentificationofplay-inspiringfactorsandmechanismsof place-of-play functioning and the possibility of using the identified play-inspiringfactorsforthefunctioningofthepublicspace.

I.Changesandtypologyofaplaceofplay

I have analysed places of play in terms of evolution and typology on the basis ofhistorical and interpretation studies with the use of source materials (e.g. artmonuments, collections of old toys, memoirs) as well as analyses of old andcontemporary solutions forplacesofplay.Researchhas shown that changes in thevision of play and of a child over the centuries have disintegrated the play space, whichhaslargelylostitsoriginal, integrativeanduniversalnature.Therelatedspatialtransformationsconcerned: separationof theplaceofplay fromthepublic space–formerly, children played in the children's everyday space (public and private),nowadays–theyplayinaseparateplace(aplayground, achild'sroom);segregationoftheplaceofplay–formerly, playwasseenasanactivityinvolvingbothadultsandchildren, takingplace ina family'sor social group’severyday space (common livingspace), nowadays – it is seen as children's realmandoccurs in places intended forthem; specialisation of a place of play – formerly, play took place in a spacecharacterised by universality of a thought-up scenario of play, resulting from thenecessity to adapt and create it jointly (child as a (co-)creator of play and space),nowadays–inaspacewiththefeaturesofaready-madeproduct,whichshouldmeetmoreandmoreneedsandexpectations(childasaconsumerandrecipient).

Currently, a place of play (such as a playground) is not usually a place for jointparticipationand integration, andthepublicspacedoesnot functionasaspace for

playing together. Toachieve theobjectives set forplay, theplaceofplayhasbeeninspected, adjustedand isolated.Today, themost common formofplaceofplay isthecontemporary(commercial)playground, whichprovesthat, intheunderstandinganddesigningaplaceofplay, thereexist:intentionalborderlines–aplacetoplayasastandardsetofdevices;semanticborderlines–aplacetoplayasaplacetocontrolchildren;syntacticborderlines–aplaceofplayasaground.Theinteractionsoftheseborderlines are embodied in a mature form of a contemporary (commercial)McDonald'splaygroundfurnishedwithready-madeequipment, isolatedfrompublicspace, offeringsafe(controlled)activities.Thisembodimentiscontrastedbyaplaceof play contained in the public space, integrated with the city, enabling users tocreateitjointlyandstimulatingexploration–aplacethatfunctionsasaplayspace.

Thepolarisedfunctioningofplacesofplaywasnoticedandconsideredanoutcomeofthechangesdiscussedabove.Thisunderliesintroducingmyowntypologyofplacesof play, which goes far beyond the classical division into traditional, contemporaryand adventure playground. My classification is based on the degree to which theexistingplayequipmentallowstheuserstotransformit.Ineachofthethreecurrentsthat I identified: classic, alternative and mixed, I singled out several types andvarietiesofplacesofplay.Theclassifiedplacesofplaycanbeadditionallyassignedtoone of three types of spaces: play spaces, non-play spaces and quasi-play spaces, which differ in terms of the architectural elements of a place of play and users'behaviour.Thisclassificationresultsfromthreewaysofseeingaplay,determiningaspecificapproachinshapingaplaceofplay.

Themostdesirable is aplaceofplay functioningasaplay space, fully realizing theessenceofplayandcharacterizedbygreatpossibilitiesofshapingthespacebyusersandjointparticipationinitsfunctioning(playiscreationandcommunication).

II.Thearchitectureofaplaceofplayfunctioningasaplayspace

Behaviouralanalysesofplacesofplayallowedtheidentificationofplay-inspiringfactorsand mechanisms of function of play space, and then the identification of desirableelementsofthearchitectureofaplaceofplay.Onthebasisofobservationsandanalysesofcollecteddata, anumberofremarksweremade, including:

– playing in space develops according to a repetitive pattern and requires aspecificarrangementofzones;

– eachplaceofplayhasitsownpathofplay(i.e.arepetitivearrangementofzonesthatchildrenvisit);

– thesizeofplaygroundisimportantforitsintegrationpotential;– the phenomenon of zero-presence zones or defunct play zones results from

specificsolutions(e.g.multiplicationofplayzones);– the type of a playground does not determine its potential, rather its spatial

featuresdo.

The observations enabled me to identify primary and secondary play-inspiringfactors.Theplay-inspiringfactorsofnarration,creationandlimitationturnouttobecrucial for a place of play to function as a play space (as a whole) and to beresponsible for theemergenceandcontinuanceofplay in space.Secondary factorsinclude the cultural factor with supportive effect and the factor of form withconditionaleffect.

Theconsiderationoftheintegratedactionofplay-inspiringfactorsinarchitectureofplaceofplayopensthewaytowardsbuildingaplayspaceandtriggeringintegrationprocesses taking place at three levels: integration behaviours and interactionsbetweentheparticipantsinspace(1stlevelofintegration);interactionbetweentheparticipantsandspace(2ndlevelof integration);creationofconnectionsbetweenaplace of play and the city (3rd level of integration). Each of the indicated levels ofintegrationisbasedontheinteractionofcertainplay-inspiringfactors.

Theuseofplay-inspiringfactorsinrelationtoeachofthethreelevelsofintegrationofaplayspaceallowsforfulluseofitsintegrativephenomenonandisthebasisforindicating the architectural determinants of a place of play functioning as a playspace. The architectural determinants of a place of play, which I have identified inrelationtoeachofthethree levelsof integrationofplayspace, mayformthebasisfor the evaluation of a place of play. The evaluation based on the analysis of thearchitecture of a place of play in relation to each of the three spheres of the playspace integration allows indicating the integration sphere whose function isdisturbed.Theidentificationofadysfunctionalintegrationlevelanditsfeaturesanddysfunctionalelementsshouldbetreatedasabasisfortakingconcretestepstowardschangesinthedevelopmentandshapingtheplaceofplay.Theuseoftheevaluationofaplaceofplay(existinganddesigned)basedontheanalysisoftheirarchitectureinthecontextofthethree integration levelsmayeffectivelychangethecommonwayoftheirshaping, andcontributetothecreationofplacesfunctioningasplayspaces.

III.Publicspacefunctioningasaplayspace

Iattemptedtorelatetheresultsofanalysesofthefunctioningofaplaceofplayasaplayspacetothefunctioningofpublicspaceandthecity.

Usually, we are dealingwith a city inwhich there are strictly designated places ofplay. My field research and public opinion polls among the inhabitants of Szczecinhaveshown, amongotherthingsthat: identifiedplacesarecharacterisedbyasmalldiversity in terms of functional solutions and aesthetics; contrary to stereotypes,

playgroundsarenot consideredby childrenandyoungpeople tobe their favouriteplaces to play, whereas they are often well perceived by adults and indicated byadults as their favourite place; the role of shopping malls as places of play arebecomingincreasinglyimportant, especiallyamongchildrenandadolescents, forthelatter group they are even a favourite place of play; places of play indicated asfavouritearenotusuallythemostvisitedones.Unfortunately,theveryexistenceofplacesofplayinthestructureofthecitydoesnottranslateintotherealizationoftheideaofplayspace.Systematizationofplacesofplay (bythe locationofaplaceandsuch criteria as itsnatureand socio-spatial value) additionally allows tonotice thattheimportanceofplacesofplayfromtheperspectiveofchild'severydaylife, butalsoofallusers(regardlessofage),doesnotnecessarilycoincidewiththemeaningoftheplacesintheurbanspace.

Thephenomenonof integrationofplayismostfullyutilizedintheconceptofacitywithplayinpublicspace(playablecity). Introducingplayintopublicspacesisbasedontwobasicconcepts.Itisdonebymanifestingplayandprovokingtoitorbuildingandinterferingwithspace.Onthebasisoftheanalysedexamples,Iindicatedactionsandspatialmeasuresimportantforshapingpublicspaceasaplayspace.Thisisnotarandom set of solutions, because we find here direct links to the defined play-inspiring factors. Identifying spatial measures related to the essence of play (play-inspiringfactors)andatthesametimepossibletouseinthepublicspaceallowsforitsconsciousdesigningandshapingasaplayspace.

5.1.1.Beforeobtainingmydoctoraldegree

In 1996, I undertook studies at the FacultyofCivil EngineeringandArchitectureof theSzczecin University of Technology, in the field of Architecture and Urban Planning. In2001,IdefendedmyMaster'sthesisentitled:“ExhibitionparkinSzczecin”andgraduatedwith very good merit. Already during my studies, my interests focused on the socialaspects of designing space. What turned out to be of key importance was myparticipation in the national contest "Playground in the city" organized by the"Architektura-Murator” monthly in 2001. The President of Wrocław has awarded myworkandasaresult,Iwasinvitedtoparticipateintheconference:6thNationalSeminar"Backyards2001"organizedbytheMunicipalOfficeinWrocław.Thisconferenceturnedout to crystallizemy interest in landscape architecture and further professional careerplans.

In November 2002, I started doctoral full-time inter-faculty studies at the Academy ofAgricultureinSzczecinandbecameadoctoralstudentattheChairofLandscapeDesignattheFacultyofEnvironmentalManagementandAgriculture.Mydoctoralthesisentitled"Shapingareasofeverydayrecreationinthecontextofhumanrecreationneeds(ontheexampleofSzczecin)”wassupervisedbyProf.Ph.D.hab.Eng.ofarch.AdamM.Szymski,Onthe13thofDecember2006,Idefendedmydoctoralthesisand,bythedecisionoftheArchitectureFacultyCounciloftheWrocławUniversityofTechnology,Iwasgrantedthedoctor’sdegreeinengineering,inthefieldofarchitectureandurbanplanning.

In theperiodprior tomydoctorate (2002-2006), Ipublished8articlesandpresented9papers at national and international conferences, mainly participating in garden artconferences organised every year by the Institute of Landscape Architecture of theCracowUniversity of Technology and subsequent editions of the Forum on LandscapeArchitecture.

I believe that the following events were relevant formy research and development. Iparticipated in an external seminar organized by the Faculty of Architecture of theWrocławUniversity of Technology entitled “The Path ofGreat Landscape Complexes –Cottbus, Bad Muskau, Dessau, Potsdam, Berlin, Germany" in 2004 and in the 7thInternational Summer Academy, Fachhochschule Neubrandenburg (August-September2003),aswellasastudytriptoLvivattheinvitationofProf.HalynaPetryshynfromtheLvivPolytechnic.TheexperienceIgainedfromparticipatingintheexternalseminar,apartfrom their professional value, thereafter turned out to be a valuable model for theorganization of classes for the post-graduate studies of landscape architecturecoordinated by me. My participation in the summer school organized for doctoralstudents by Fachhochschule in Neubrandenburg was helpful for the development ofscientific cooperation with Prof. ing. Thomas Oyen. In the following years, thiscooperation resulted in scientific consultations ofmy doctoral thesis and an invitationfromProf.Oyen toparticipate ina researchprojectbeingdeveloped.Theeffectofmystay in Lviv and my interest in photography was the photo exhibition entitled "LvivGardens" organized in theAmfiladaGallery at the PomeranianCentre for Education inSzczecininDecember2004.

I tried to combinemy academic work with commercial activities, such as cooperatingwith Szczecin's architectural firms. Duringmy doctoral studies, I worked as an interiordesigner, creating fit-outdesigns,andthenasanassistantdesigner,performingdesign,inventoryandcalculationworkrelatedtotheheat lossofbuildings.Mypassionforart, supported by participation in various courses and pieces of training (e.g. "Colour andstainedglass",paintingonglass, workshops"GlassDecoration")alsoenabledmetogiveprivatelessonsindrawingandpainting.

5.1.2.Afterobtainingmydoctoraldegree

After receiving my doctor's degree in engineering, I first worked as an assistantprofessor at the Department of Landscape Design, Faculty of EnvironmentalManagementandAgriculture,AR/ZUT(2007-2017),andthen–attheDepartmentofContemporary Architecture, Theory and Methodology of Design, Faculty of CivilEngineering and Architecture at ZUT in Szczecin (since 2017). My scientific andresearch interests were focused on three main subject areas, still related tolandscape architecture. The topicof integrationand therapeuticpotentialof space in the contextofschool grounds management seemed to me to be worth particular attention anddraftingofaresearchproject.Thetopic"Possibilitiesofusinglandscapeandgardentherapytostrengthentheintegrationandtherapeuticpotentialofaschoolyard"wasentered for theOPUS competition. Although the project did not receive funding, Ipartially conducted it as an individual research topic, cooperating with selectedschools. Themainobjectiveof the researchwas to define thepossibilities of usinglandscapeandgardentherapy inthemanagementofschoolyardandtodefinethekey conditions for its functioning as a therapeutic and integration space. Selectedideasandconceptsof shaping thespacewereanalysed inorder to identify thekeyspatial features for thecreationof integrationspace inaschoolyard [3B],andthenthe possibilities of building such schoolyard on selected examples of school landdevelopmentprojects[4B].

Theintegrationandtherapeuticvaluesofspacewerealsothesubjectsofstudiesonthe development of selected hospital areas [5B]. The aim of the research was toindicate spatial criteria that build therapeutic space (one stimulating recovery) andcriteria that contribute to the perception of the hospital environment as human-friendly. My daughter's disease and the need to treat her abroad were difficultpersonal experiences having a significant impact on my research. ComparativeanalysisofselectedhospitalgardensinPolandandtheUnitedStatesallowedmetoidentifythecriteriaforbuildingtherapeuticspacefromthepointofviewofdifferentgroups of users. space, and thus the threats to the cultural landscape and thedesireddirections ofactivities for its preservation. Research on the integration of architecture andlandscape was the subject of 3 speeches at conferences: International scientificconference entitled “Object, Architecture, Environment”, 26 April 2017, Rumia,S.ARCH2017:SustainableArchitecture,the4thInternationalConferenceS.ARCH,7–9June 2017, Hong Kong and 5th InternationalMultidisciplinary Scientific ConferenceonSocialSciences&Arts,SGEM2018,Albena,24August–2September2018.

I also researched the fieldof landscapeandWesternPomerania, combining itwiththeissueoftherapeuticspace,whichIhavealreadyaddressedpreviously[10C].Theaim of the research was to identify and compare the determinants of therapeuticspaceandpublicspaceinahealthresortandtoanalysetheuseofthedeterminantsof therapeutic space in public space on the example of the health-resort town ofPołczyn Zdrój. The results of the research were presented in a speech at theconference: 5th International Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference on SocialSciences & Arts, SGEM 2018, Albena, 24 August – 2 September 2018. Alsonoteworthy is the topic of opportunities for development of marine and sailingtourismintheseasidebeltofWesternPomerania[8C].Thetopicwasinitiatedaspartoftheresearchprojectentitled"Sustainabledevelopmentofmarinetourismareas:amodelapproach.CasestudiesofselectedBalticSearegions”.Theproject,whichIco-authored togetherwith a researcher from ZUT,was submitted by a consortium ofthree universities (University of Łódź, Maritime Academy of Szczecin and WestPomeranianUniversity of Technology in Szczecin) in theDIANA competition of theNational Research Centre. As part of the previous research and preparatoryworksaimed at the development of the project, the potential of marine tourism in theregionofWesternPomeraniawasdiagnosed, landscapeandcultural aspects in thedevelopmentofmarinetourism(inparticularsailingtourism)wereidentifiedandthehistoricalandspatialconditionsforthelocationandconcentrationofsailingtourismactivityintheareaofselectedtownofDziwnówwereanalysed.

In summary, as a result of research carried out in the field of landscape studies, Ipublished16peer-reviewedpapersanddelivered9papersatscientificconferencesinPolandandabroad.
