PeddiTalk - Summer 2016

I am writing to you from my back porch, where the sun is out and the temperature is perfect. I hope you can all agree that the warm weather is well deserved, as we have lived with the cold for way too long!

First of all, I am happy to report that after a challenging 2015-2016 fiscal year, Peddinghaus wrapped things up with numbers in the black. I guess my decision to pull the E-brake for winter 2015 was the right one; but believe me, as C.E.O., mak-ing those types of decisions are the worst part of my job! Working with gross sales is a lot more fun.

Speaking of sales, as you all know, we had our annual NASCC show in Orlando in April. Just like in the past, everything went fantastically. Our new XDM 630 machine sparked great interest from the North American market; and, of course, our Network-ing Event and Motorcycle Fabshop Tour were greatly appreciated by all of our customers.

Additionally, we received many com-pliments on the promotional video of Lyle and I flying magically on a PeddiBeam from Orlando to Bradley for a plant tour. We could not have pulled it off without your help! Thank you to everyone for your participa-tion. If you would like to see some of the pictures and videos from this year’s show, you can check them out online at www.peddinghaus.com/NASCCphotos or www.peddinghaus.com/NASCCvideos.

Looking ahead, you may be wonder-ing how Peddinghaus is doing in the current economic climate. The good news is, we have a lot to look forward to for 2016-2017.

As mentioned previously, we have officailly launched our new XDM 630 machine. In August we will send the PeddiBot out to make its production debut at Owen Steel in Columbia, SC; and by fall 2016, we will start deliv-ering our new PeddiMatic System. Although the World Market remains soft, the release of new equipment will get our customers excited and open the doors to many new oppor-tunities.

Finally, as the summer quarter reaches full swing, we will be keep-ing overtime hours to a minimum. Please take advantage of this time to enjoy the weather with family, go fishing, see some ball games, and maybe even take a little vacation.

Remember, teamwork is the key to success. Your hard work and dedi-cation is greatly valued, as we truly understand that quality comes from within! I learned from my Grandfa-ther a long time ago, “No matter what - the world keeps turning. The best thing we can do is work hard and stay positive.”

Sincerely,

C.E.O. Anton Peddinghaus

I Never Knew... Weld Shop

• The Weld Shop has moved 3 times since Todd Hartman has worked at Peddinghaus. He claims this is the reason why he no longer has hair!

• Originally, the Weld Shop was located in the maintenance buliding behind our main plant in Bradley.

• Rick Miller interviewed Todd Hartman and proctored his weld test for employment here at Peddinghaus. There were only two welders here at that time

• The weld shop is respon-sible for The Great Wall of Peddinghaus located on the south side of the Cafe park-ing lot.

• Actually, the weld shop helps other Peddinghaus Depart-ments with many different fabrication projects. Check out the hand rails next time you walk down the stairs out-side the PeddiCenter.

• The Weld Shop uses Ped-dinghaus equipment to fabricate their products.

• In production you will see an FDB 2500 plate line, Ring of Fire, and various Peddinghaus Band Saws in operation.

• Every line of Peddinghaus Machinery has at least one part that is made on the FDB and ROF.

• 98% of our weldments are made of mild steel. The remaining 2% consists of stainless steel, aluminum, and alloyed steel.

• Todd Hartman’s first boss was Bob Meltzer. Accord-ing to Todd this might explain a lot..., “There is nothing like an old coffee cup throwing contest”

It’s a Matter of Fact!

Todd HartmanWith over 29 years of work at Peddinghaus Corporation, Todd Hartman has had a few different responsibilities throughout his time here. Todd Hartman was hired at Peddinghaus in April of 1987 as an Assembly shop employee. As of August, 1997, Todd was promoted to Assembly Supervisor. Shortly there after, Todd became the Fab Shop supervisor.

Did you know?• When someone is referring

to MIG welding it means Met-al Inert Gas, and TIG welding is Tungston Inert Gas. These are two different processes.

• All weld shop personnel will eventually be trained on several different processes of welding - anywhere from silver soldiering to MIG weld-ing on different size wire.

• The weld shop has 12 em-polyees all crosstrained to do multiple jobs. (welding, inspection, saws, ROF, FDB, and Fabrication

• Our welders are certified to weld in the flat position. We have specialized machinery to put weldments into flat position.

• Welding out of position is any weld that is performed vertical up, vertical down, horizontal, or overhead.

Cody SmithLimestone Native, Cody Smith is Weld Shop Assistant Foreman. Cody has been with Peddinghaus for a total of 9 years, as he started working for Peddinghaus when he was only sixteen. This was possible through the KACC internship program. Cody is in charge of the fabrication portion of the weld shop, and in Todd’s absence, Cody runs the whole show!

Dru WestDru West is from St. Anne, IL. He has worked with Peddinghaus for 2 years now. As Group Leader, Dru is responsible for the welding portion of our Fab Shop.

Peddinghaus Motorcycle Fab Shop Tour 2016

“It is one thing to throw a once-in-a-lifetime party, quite another to con-tinue to outdo yourselves year-over-year. More notably, Peddinghaus recognizes that the most important element here is not the corpora-tions or machinery but rather the people involved. Thank you Pedding-haus for treating us all like family and the memorable experiences you have made possible. Finally, it must be said that the generosity and humility of the Peddinghaus Corporation during the Fab Shop Tour, Bash and NASCC show knows no equal, Truly a class act!” - Fred Schwalbach, Merrill Iron & Steel

Record Breaking Riders With an excess of 80 tour attend-ees, the 2016 Motorcyle event set an all-time record for the most rid-ers on one Peddinghaus Bike Ride. With a group of that size, Pedding-haus and all the participants had the opportunity to develop relation-ships with many different custom-ers reaching industries all over the world! The United States, Canada, Germany, Austria, Australia, and New Zealand were all represented.

Shop Stops Along the ride, our customers had the opportunity to visit facilities owned and operated by fellow Ped-dinghaus customers. During these visits, tour participants were able to observe different shop production layouts and watch Peddinghaus machinery in action. These shops included SteelFab of North Caro-lina, SteelFab of South Carolina, Peddinghaus Corporation South Carolina, Unlimited Welding, and Dixie Southern Industries.

The Route This year’s annual Motorcycle Fab Shop Tour kicked off in Charlotte, NC and traveled down the East Coast through South Carolina and Georgia before reaching their final destination - The NASCC show in Orlando, FL.

NASCC 2016 - Orlando, FLThe Booth Peddinghaus packed a 5000 sq ft booth with plenty of Pedding-haus power. It took a 5 mem-ber installation team 4 days to complete the move in, but when it was done - the NASCC Orlan-do booth was nothing short of magical. Special thanks to the Marketing Team and Technical Crew for making it a success!

Machines The orange carpet was rolled out to display some of our newest and finest Peddinghaus machines. The XDM 630 Drill/Saw combination machine made its NASCC debut. In addition, we also showcased our Ring of Fire, PeddiRotator, and 410 DGA saw line.

Peddinghaus Networking EventThis year’s Customer Networking Dinner Event was booming with Peddinghaus pride. We filled Wrecker’s Sports bar with 450 of our best customers!

We showed our gratitude to our Customers with food, fun, and lots of entertainment. The night was kicked off with a Magic Show featuring none other than our very

own Anton Peddinghaus and Lyle Menke. Archie Manning made a guest appearance, and Jeff Fox-worthy’s performance blew the audience away.

With some help from DJ Rooney, one of the best in the business, the festivities were concluded by a dance floor packed with guests bustin’ a rug.

Peddinghaus employee receives SC Dept. of Commerce awardAs part of the 25th annual Indus-try Appreciation Week, the South Carolina Department of Commerce announced the Ambassadors for Economic Development in a ceremo-ny held on April 28th at the Gover-nor’s Mansion in Columbia, SC. Rec-ognized for their exceptional efforts to bolster community and economic development activities in South Car-olina, the ambassadors, 1 from each of the 46 counties in South Carolina, were honored at this ceremony. Bob Meltzer, of Peddinghaus, was the Williamsburg County honoree this year. On hand to present the awards to each individual were South Caroli-na Governor Nikki Haley and Secre-tary of Commerce Bobby Witt.

Each year the Department of Com-merce joins local communities to thank local businesses for their vital contributions to South Carolina’s economy during the state’s Industry Appreciation Week. As part of the celebration, the state recognizes individuals throughout SC as Ambas-sadors for Economic Development. These individuals include local lead-ers from the private sector, repre-

senting a variety of businesses committed to advancing their communities.

“In South Carolina, growing our state’s economy and creating jobs truly is a team effort, and the indi-viduals recognized as ambassa-dors are proof of that. These local business leaders from all corners of our state are what really make South Carolina such a special place to live, work, and play,” said Governor Nikki Haley.

“Businesses don’t locate to a state or region, they locate to a community. So, its important to recognize the local leaders in communities across this state that help move SC and its communities forward,” commented Secretary of Commerce, Bobby Witt.

Name That Machine

Bob Meltzer stated, “I was honored to receive this recognition on behalf of everyone here at PCSC that has helped me to achieve it. It was per-sonally gratifying to meet and shake the hand of our SC Governor Nikki Haley. The tour of the SC Governor’s Mansion and grounds is something many never get to see or do. Once again, without a doubt, an honor I will cherish forever as I know how much hard work has went into this over the years.”

Blue Jean Donation

Peddinghaus Employees donated $745 to Harbor House this quarter. This generous donation will go to-wards the help of domestic violence survivors. Harbor House provides shelters, food, education programs, advocacy, counseling, support groups, and legal advocacy for vic-tims of domestic violence.

Peddinghaus Donates for Outdoor Music VenueWhat started as a dream has become a reality for the City

of Kankakee. The popular Merchant Street Music Festival was growing every year. It only lacked one thing – a permanent stage to serve as the focal point for the music “Headliners” performing at the festival.

Well, thanks to donations from Peddinghaus, the Miner Founda-tion, and others, this new music venue is a reality!

Peddinghaus supplied all the fabricated steel for this new stage. All of the structural components (HSS tube and plate) were fabricated in our very own Weld Shop Department. Supplied with design drawing from Ralph Rorem (architect) and Tyson Engi-neering, our guys in the Weld Shop ran with the entire project.

The tubing was processed on our own Ring of Fire machine, and all the plate parts were run on ourPeddinghaus FDB plate pro-cessor in the Weld Shop. How sweet to process all these parts on our ownequipment for a local project!

So next time you are in downtown Kankakee, stop by this new Music venue. With pride, tell your family & friends that Pedding-haus supplied every piece of fabricated steel for this community project. I think you all agree that Peddinghaus employees know how to Rock this Town!

Red Cross Blood DriveThe semi-annual Red Cross Blood Drive was on location at Pedding-haus Bradley, May 18th 2016. This season Peddinghaus had a total of 31 donors. It is reported that every dontation saves up to 3 lives, so Peddinghaus saved up to 93 total lives! The next Blood Drive will be November 2016. Thank you Heroes!

HR Minute Did you know we can split your check into separate accounts? One easy way to establish an emergency fund is to have money deposited directly from payroll into a separate account.

Let’s say your basic monthly expenses are $2000 (house, car, utilities, food, etc). 3 months equals $6000 to have on hand. If you deduct $100 per paycheck you will have $6000 in your emergency fund in 2.3 years! From there you can just keep building.

The key is to stay consistent with your deposits and to not make any withdrawals from that account! I suggest establishing an account at a bank where you have no other accounts. This way, it won’t be so easy to make a quick “transfer”. If $100 is too high, shoot for something lower. Even $25 per check will begin to add up. Think of it as paying yourself first!

If you wish to set up a new separate account and start paying yourself first, stop in with Bank name, Routing number, Account number and amount you will like to deposit each paycheck. I will start deductions in payroll and you will be on your way to-wards some additional peace of mind for you and your family!

Emergency CashHow much should you have in your emergency fund?

A) $500

B) A year’s worth of your salary

C) 3 to 6 months worth of expenses

The correct answer is C! You should have enough cash to cover at least 3 to 6 months of everyday expenses. How-ever, for most of us, the real question is how do I get there?

Geek Speak...Virtual Reality is Here, Affordable, and Fun! Recommended VR Experiences: Games, Movies, AppsSupported Platforms: Most smartphones, Playstation, PCRecommended Websites: https://vr.google.com/cardboard/, http://www.samsung.com/gearvr, http://www.playstation.com/PSVR, https://www.oculus.com/Cost: ~$20 to ~$600

Virtual Reality has come a long way since the first well known introductions of multimodal interactions. Multi-modal human-computer interaction refers to the “interaction with the virtual and physical environment through natural modes of communication”. In the 1950’s, Morton Heilig (Father of Virtual Reality) invented the Sensora-ma, a mechanical device that displayed five short films that was able to display stereoscopic 3-D images in a wide-angle view, supply sound, motion senses, and even had tracks for wind and aromas during specific parts of the film.

Remember BattleZone from Atari? Remember View-Masters and the paper disks?

Right now the water is heating up and we are close to the boiling point of VR technology where soon every game, every movie, and every digital experience can be enjoyed in the virtual space. VR is spanning across multiple industries already from gaming, to movies, to education and training, to medicine, to architectural design.
