About Food Technology Centre, Llangefni, North Wales
Based at Coleg Menai in North Wales, the Food Technology Centre plays a key role in transferring knowledge to the
food industry in Wales and internationally. Working with new startups, SME’s and national companies the Food Technology Centre has dedicated resources which enable food businesses to access technical support, practical solutions, advice and guidance on areas which are key to business growth.
The staff can support your company’s needs, including 3rd party accreditation, NPD, product reformulation, training, pilot production, food safety systems and analytical testing.
With dedicated processing halls for red meat, fish, dairy and prepared foods, the Centre is equipped with an extensive range of modern pilot and industrial scale equipment to undertake all aspects of new product development through to a successful product launch. These facilities allow the client to manufacture products on a pilot scale in order to secure sales from retailers and final consumers before investing heavily in equipment.
The team can support companies to gain EHO approval whilst scaling up product runs that are consistent and safe. Larger, established companies also benefit from these facilities by producing small production runs of new products, minimizing any commercial disruption at their main production site.
With the long term objective of developing food businesses’ processing and manufacturing capacity, we aim to further develop Wales’s and the UK’s reputation for producing and manufacturing innovative food and drink that is of the highest quality.

Arloesi
Egwyddor allweddol gyntaf HELIX yw arloesi, ac ystyrir bod datblygu cynhyrchion newydd yn gonglfaen
llwyddiant y diwydiant bwyd a diod yn y dyfodol, gan sicrhau twf economaidd a chreu swyddi newydd.
Gan adeiladu ar lwyddiant y tair canolfan fwyd yng Nghymru o ran datblygu cynhyrchion newydd ac ailffurfio cynhyrchion, bydd Prosiect HELIX yn cynnig sbardun ar gyfer arloesi pellach drwy ganolbwyntio mwy ar agweddau technegol cynhyrchu bwyd i greu gwerth ychwanegol. Rhagwelir mai un o brif ganlyniadau Prosiect HELIX fydd creu swyddi, yn enwedig yng Nghymru wledig ac yn y Cymoedd, a bydd gwthio ffiniau arloesi bwyd yn allweddol i gyrchu marchnadoedd newydd a chyflawni twf economaidd cynaliadwy a fydd yn gyrru’r galw am weithlu medrus sydd â sgiliau technegol.
Innovation
The first key principle of Project HELIX is innovation, with new product development considered the
cornerstone of future success in the food and drink industry, ensuring economic growth and creating new jobs.
Building on the success of the three food centres in Wales in new product development and product reformulation, Project HELIX will provide the impetus for further innovation by focussing more on the technical aspects of food manufacturing to create added value. Project HELIX will use its considerable network to help companies to find new markets.
The initiative will develop and deliver academic and practical knowledge transfer activity, adding value, supporting businesses and fast-tracking innovative new products from concept, design, development and manufacture right through to the consumer’s shopping basket.
It is anticipated that one of the main outputs of Project HELIX will be job creation, especially in rural Wales and the Valleys, and pushing the boundaries of food innovation will be key to accessing new markets and achieving sustained economic growth that will drive the demand for a technically skilled and capable workforce.

Effeithlonrwydd
Drwy fod yn fwy effeithlon, gall y sector bwyd a diod yng Nghymru leihau costau a chyflawni gwell gwerth
am arian, a thrwy hynny gynyddu proffidioldeb a rhyddhau adnoddau gan hwyluso’r potensial ar gyfer ail-fuddsoddi.
O ganlyniad i’r partneriaethau diwydiannol hynod lwyddiannus a grëwyd gan Arloesi Bwyd Cymru dros y blynyddoedd diweddar, bellach mae cronfa gyfoethog o wybodaeth ar gael i’r diwydiant i’w helpu i broffesiynoli ei brosesau, cynyddu cynhyrchedd a lleihau costau.
Mae gwella effeithlonrwydd hefyd yn fuddiol er mwyn cwrdd â nodau polisi cyhoeddus; er enghraifft rhan o’r agenda effeithlonrwydd yw lleihau gwastraff a thrwy wneud hynny leihau effaith amgylcheddol cynhyrchu bwyd. Bydd hyn yn cynnwys edrych ar becynnu bwyd, lleihau’r gwastraff a grëir wrth gynhyrchu, yn ogystal â chanfod ffyrdd i leihau’r defnydd o danwydd wrth drawsgludo a chynyddu effeithlonrwydd ynni yn ystod y broses gynhyrchu.
Mae gwell effeithlonrwydd hefyd yn hanfodol wrth ymateb i ddefnyddiwr sy’n ymwybodol o iechyd, drwy ddadansoddi cynhwysion y cynhyrchion i ddod o hyd i ffyrdd i leihau’r calorïau a gaiff eu bwyta ym mhob uned o fwyd.
Bydd Prosiect HELIX yn annog dadansoddiad fforensig o bob cam ar y daith fwyd a diod, o lawr y ffatri hyd at silff yr archfarchnad, ac yn canfod ffyrdd o gyflwyno arbedion ar draws rheolyddion proses, dylunio safle, pecynnu a datblygu systemau.
Bydd Prosiect HELIX yn casglu gwybodaeth am effeithlonrwydd bwyd o bedwar ban byd ac yn trosglwyddo’r wybodaeth i gynhyrchwyr a gwneuthurwyr bwyd ar draws Cymru. Drwy ddefnyddio’r ymarfer gorau hwn, bydd gwell effeithlonrwydd yn galluogi’r diwydiant bwyd i fod yn fwy cost effeithiol, yn fwy cynhyrchiol ac yn fwy ymatebol i dueddiadau marchnad newydd a gofynion cwsmeriaid.
Efficiency
By being more efficient, the food and drink sector in Wales can reduce costs and achieve better value for money,
thus increasing profitability and freeing up resources while facilitating the potential for reinvestment.
As a result of the hugely successful industrial partnerships forged by Food Innovation Wales over recent years, there is now a rich knowledge pool available to the industry to help it to professionalise its processes, increase productivity and drive down costs.
The consequences of improving efficiency is also beneficial in meeting public policy goals; for example, a key part of the efficiency agenda is to cut down on waste and in so doing reduce the environmental impact of food production. This will include looking at food packaging, reducing the waste generated in production, as well as finding ways to reduce fuel consumption during transportation and increasing energy efficiency during manufacture.
Greater efficiency also has a critical role in responding to a health-conscious consumer, through the analysis of product ingredients to finding ways to reduce the calorific intake per food unit.
Project HELIX will encourage a forensic analysis of each and every step of the food and drink journey from the factory floor to the supermarket shelf and identify ways of introducing efficiencies across process controls, site design, packaging and systems development.
Project HELIX will gather information on food efficiency from around the world and transfer that knowledge to food producers and manufacturers across Wales. Through employing this best practice, greater efficiency will enable the food industry to become more cost-effective, more productive and more responsive to new market trends and consumer demand.

Mae strategaeth yn rhan mor bwysig o Brosiect HELIX, ac yn ffurfio’r elfen olaf yng nghysyniad yr Helix triphlyg.
Bydd agwedd strategol yn galluogi cynhyrchwyr bwyd yng Nghymru i elwa o ymarfer gorau a phrofiadau gweddill y byd. Drwy drosglwyddo gwybodaeth academaidd a diwydiannol bydd Prosiect HELIX yn trosi hynny i gyd-destun Cymreig.
Rhaid i wybodaeth y diwydiant lywio a ffurfio’r agwedd strategol i ddatblygu sgiliau cynaliadwy mewn meysydd allweddol fel technoleg bwyd er mwyn sbarduno llwyddiant y sector bwyd a diod yng Nghymru.
Drwy ystyried prosesau cynhyrchwyr bwyd byd-eang a chyflawni achrediad trydydd parti, er enghraifft, gallai cwmni bwyd o Gymru agor marchnadoedd newydd iddo’i hun, yn ogystal â dod yn bartner trosglwyddo gwybodaeth i gwmnïau bwyd eraill, ar y rheolyddion technegol sydd eu hangen i gyflawni’r achrediad hwnnw.
Drwy fod yn fwy strategol ceir potensial enfawr y gall y sector bwyd a diod yng Nghymru wella a gwireddu ei dargedau twf uchelgeisiol.
Strategy
Since the establishment of the three Welsh food centres and their collaboration, as Food Innovation Wales, the
benefits of a strategic approach to the growth and success of the industry in Wales is clearer than ever before.
Strategy is such an important part of Project HELIX, and forms the final element of the triple Helix concept.
The strategic approach will enable food producers in Wales to benefit from best practice and experiences from the rest of the world. Project HELIX will translate that through academic and industrial knowledge transfer into a Welsh context.
Industry intelligence must inform and shape the strategic approach and sustainable skills development in key areas such as food technology to drive the success of the food and drink sector in Wales.
By considering the processes of global food manufacturers and achieving third party accreditation, for example, a Welsh food company could open up new markets for itself, as well as becoming a knowledge transfer partner to other food companies, on the technical controls required to gain that accreditation.
By being more strategic there is huge potential for the Welsh food and drink sector to improve and realise its ambitious growth targets.

The delivery of the accredited and bespoke training was exceptional which is reflected in the results achieved by our staff. The skills learnt by our employees has promoted a high level of professional practice and a safer working environment for all employees back in the workplace. We recommended the Food Technology Centre to our Sandycroft site who are now working closely with the centre.
Nicola Curtis, HR Manager 2 Sisters Food Group
We have worked closely with the Food Technology Centre who have helped us with key projects including NPD, product reformulation and technical knowledge transfer. Their flexible approach to business needs has also seen them assist with accreditation and training, all of which has helped our business growth in creating jobs and increasing our turnover.
Richard Jones, Technical Manager South Caernarfon Creameries
We have used the Food Industry Centre for advice on BRC, factory design and a range of complex technical challenges. The depth of expertise at the centre is a crucial resource to the food processing sector in Wales and the private sector experience of its staff means that solutions are always tailored to the needs of the industrial partner.
Huw Thomas, M.D. Puffin Produce
The Food Industry Centre offers flexible programmes which allow access to high quality knowledge and expertise from the university and has given us many opportunities to network with other companies, individuals and government agencies that would not be easily achieved in normal day to day work.

We approached the Centre with a concept idea and were delighted with the support afforded us. A complex product development programme and access to a manufacturing site were managed by the Centre, allowing us to reach market well ahead of schedule.
Dan Ronson, Director Starjump Food Products Ltd.
As the product development work involves a lot of experimenting, the use of the extra equipment means that we do not need to purchase equipment that we might not need if the trial product is not adopted.
Marcus Sherreard Dawn Meats
If it wasn’t for the support provided by the Food Centre Wales, we would not have been able to have started our businesses; the impact has had a substantial impact on us. The support has been fantastic, much better than we ever could have imagined.
Ivan Wilson, Fire & Ice Artisan Sorbet & Ice-Cream
The technical expertise was brilliant, and the flexibility in using the equipment was great. The facilities were excellent. We were able to create a small batch that we could then take to manufacturers to find out whether it was something they would consider selling. We were able to use the FCW to create a pilot product.
