Slide 6 Here it is as they knew it. Slide 7 Pennsylvania Virginia New France Map from 1755 Map from 1755 Slide 8 So here is what they were fighting about. Slide 9 Land was at the Heart of it Slide 10 British Land French Land Spanish Slide 11 Virginias Lieutenant Governor, Robert Dinwiddie Wanted to protect Virginias claims to the Ohio Valley and to open farmland for important Virginia farmers to grow tobacco. Slide 12 1753, Dinwiddie learns the French had built forts on land claimed by Virginia. He was angry. Slide 13 How dare those stupid French dogs? I am really Angry! He looks angry to me. Slide 14 All those stupid French forts on my land! OOOOh! I am getting even angrier! What did I tell you? Slide 15 The really Angry Dinwiddie sends for a hero! Who was that hero you ask. Why none other than the very famous, very rich, very smart, and very handsome da du da duh! George Washington! Slide 16 So in October of 1753Dinwiddie ordered Major George Washington of the Virginia militia to deliver a message to the commander of the French forces in the Ohio Country. Slide 17 Go tell those French persons to get off of our land, said Dinwiddie. Yes sir! said Washington. So off went Washington. Slide 18 Oh Martha dear, I am going to Ohio, dont you want to kiss me goodbye? I am doing the wash honey poo, see you when you get back. Slide 19 The French told him to get lost. 2 months later Slide 20 In the mean time, up in New York and New England, the French were helping their Indian friends try to get rid of English settlers. Slide 21 Things were getting nasty. Slide 22 And in Philadelphia, a bunch of other rich and important colonial dudes were worried about the French taking what they thought was their land! One of those important dudes was this dude Slide 23 He was also rich, famous, smart, and uh, well maybe not handsome. But he had a lot of important friends. And, they wanted Ohio Country too. Slide 24 Finally, the nagging of Ben, George and others helped make the British mad enough at France to go to war to help the colonists kick them out of not only Ohio, but most of Canada too. Slide 25 War Starts Slide 26 At first the British get their butts kicked! The British send more supplies and soldiers on ships. This cost a lot of money! British Butt Being Kicked Slide 27 After a while, thing start to go better for the British and in the end, they won the war. Slide 28 Here is how it ended up, landwise. Louisian a Territor y Slide 29 In the mean time, the cost to fund the war, made England land rich, but cash poor. I have all this blasted land, but I can afford to mow my blooming lawns! Slide 30 So he said: I know! I will tax the blighters ! Slide 31 So England imposed a series of different taxes on the colonies, which made the colonies sick. Slide 32 Not only sick, but angry and in the mood for a revolution! Slide 33 First came the Stamp Act of 1675. The colonists protested. This was a tax on PRINTED material legal documents, newspapers, and such. Who in the Colonies were most effected by this tax? Slide 34 Slide 35 A bunch of rich dudes? Lawyers, Politicians and a newspaper owner perhaps? Most common folk couldnt read. Slide 36 But King George and England were not in the mood to let their prize colonies secede without a fight. Slide 37 Slide 38 So sides were set and they were on the road to war. Slide 39
