What exactly is beer?Evidence of beer production dates back about 5,000 years to the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia (Andrews, 2014).An alcoholic beverage consisting of at least four basic ingredients which include:

Beer originally was crafted as a way to purify dirty water, and to make it consumable.

Various types of beers- Beer can be brewed into many varieties, however some of the most common range from light to dark and are considered lagers, ales, ambers, porters, and stouts. - The primary factor in determining the overall taste (or hoppiness of the beer) is the amount hops added to the mixture and how long they are allowed to remain saturated in the brewing mixture.

Microbrew revolution- As of 2015, there were over 4,000 breweries operating throughout the United States. - Interestingly, this number is nearly equal to the amount of breweries that previously operated in the late 1800s. - In 1977, brewery counts were at an all time low with fewer than 100 total throughout the nation.

Jobs, money, and beerAccording to the Brewers Association, the craft brewing industry contributed $55.7 billion to the U.S. economy in 2014 (Watson, 2014) The industry also provided more than 424,000 jobs, with more than 115,000 jobs directly at breweries and brewpubs, including serving staff at brewpubs (Watson, 2014).

Jobs; hiring competent employeesNo business can be successful unless it employs an efficient employment force.Relationships between employees must be open and communicative. Sam Calagione (2011) of Dog Fish Head Brewing notes in his book titled Brewing Up a Business that this openness is what helps cultivate a sense of community within a company, and trust is the result of this openness. Small microbrewery operations simply cannot afford to hang on to mediocre employees. Their wages are too valuable, when profit margins are razor thin. Calagione (2011) goes on to point out that Ideal coworkers look at their jobs as something to do well because that is the right thing to do and not just because they've been told to do it.

moneyMoney management is crucial in establishing a successful business with small initial profits. Sam Calagione (2011) of Dog Fish Head Brewing notes in his book titled Brewing Up a Business that it might not be initially clear whether you are stronger with the left or right business brain. That's because, as a start-up, you won't have the time, resources, or personnel depth to only pick and choose doing the jobs that you are good at or those you enjoy. You will need to do it all.Calagione (2011) goes on to note that it can be surprising to learn how quickly bringing in a skilled, complementary-brained coworker can pay off. It starts with hoisting the white flag, surrendering to the knowledge that you can't do it allAcknowledging initial financial shortfalls and respecting the dollar can make or break a breweries success.

Finally, beer!Ultimately every microbrewery has one thing in common; to produce good beer!Charles Bamforth (2003) comments in his book titled Beer Tap Into the Art and Science of Brewing that Beer, surely, is a gift of God, one that brings together yeast and vegetation (in the shape of barley and hops) in a drink that has been enjoyed for 8,000 years, a beverage that has soothed fevered brows, nourished the hungry, and coupled friendly and unfriendly alike its even seen men off into battle (p. 3).
