My Dyfi Biosphere Vision

The Dyfi Biosphere VisionA few years ago, a group of people who live in the Dyfi Valley came together and said “We have a vision for this place.” What was their vision?

“We want people to know and respect this special place.They will protect its beauty and wildlife and care for its people, history and language. People will try to live without damaging the planet. They will be able to work in local businesses and provide goods and services for the people who live here. We will call this special place, ‘The Dyfi Biosphere’”

What is your vision for the Dyfi Biosphere?

Ychydig o flynyddoedd yn ôl, ddaeth grwp o bobl sy’n byw yn Nyffryn Dyfi ynghyd a dweud “Mae gennym weledigaeth ar gyfer y lle hwn.” Beth oedd eu gweledigaeth?

“Rydym am i bobl adnabod a pharchu’r lle arbennig hwn.Mi fyddan nhw’n gwarchod ei harddwch a’i fywyd gwyllt a gofalu am ei bobl, ei hanes a’i iaith. Bydd pobl yn ceisio byw heb niweidio’r blaned. What is UNESCO?

UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. UNESCO helps countries to work together. They try to improve the natural environment, peace and justice, culture and fairness for everyone.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation ydy UNESCO (Cyfundrefn Addysgol, Wyddonol a Diwylliannol y Cenhedloedd Unedig yn y Gymraeg!). Mae UNESCO yn helpu gwledydd i gyd-weithio i wella’r amgylchedd naturiol, dros heddwch a chyfiawnder a thegwch i bawb.

Beth ydy Gwarchodfa Fiosffer UNESCO?

Llefydd sydd â chyfoeth o anifeiliaid a phlanhigion (sef yr hyn a elwir yn bioamrywiaeth) ydy Gwarchodfa Fiosffer. Mae’r bobl yn gweithio’n galed i sicrhau bod pob newid yn gynaliadwy o safbwynt yr amgylchedd, a’r bobl.

What is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve?UNESCO Biosphere reserves are places which are rich in animal and plant life (we call this biodiversity). The people who live there work hard to make sure that any changes are good for the environment, and for people.

Are there other UNESCO Biosphere Reserves?There are over 550 Biosphere Reserves in the world, but so far there are only two in Britain. The Dyfi Biosphere is the only one in Wales.

Other Biosphere Reserves include:

• Uluru (Ayers Rock-Mount Olga) in Australia

• Mount Olympus in Greece•‘Kruger to’ Canyons in South Africa

What’s so special about the Dyfi Valley?

The Dyfi Biosphere has some of the most special landscapes and wildlife areas in Europe. People that live here care about and look after this special place.

The coast waters, estuary, dunes, salt marshes, peatlands, native oak woodland and many of the creatures that live in these places are all important to the world.

There are nature reserves, businesses, tourist projects and farms in the area. People try to look after them sustain-ably. Many people try to keep the Welsh culture and language thriving.

Mae tirlun Biosffer Dyfi ymhlith y tirluniau mwyaf arbennig yn Ewrop. Mae hefyd yn un o’r ardaloedd gorau ar gyfer bywyd gwyllt. Mae bobl yn gofalu ac yn gwerthfawrogi yr ardal arbennig yma.

Mae’r dyfroedd arfordirol, yr aber, y twyni tywod, y morfeydd, y mwyndiroedd, y coetir derw cynhenid a llawer o’r creaduriaid sy’n byw yma i gyd yn bwysig i’r byd.

Mae llawer o warchodfeydd natur, busnesau a phrosiectau ar gyfer twristiaid yn ceisio bod yn gynaliadwy. Mae llawer o bobl yn ymdrechu i gadw’r iaith Gymraeg a diwylliant Cymru yn fyw.

Mae Biosffer Dyfi yn le unigryw – does dim man union yr un fath yn unlle ar y blaned. Ond y mae yn gysylltiedig â gweddill y byd. Ac mae’r hyn a wnawn yma yn effeithio’n ehangach ar y byd. Mae’r hyn sy’n digwydd mewn mannau eraill yn y byd hefyd yn effeithio ar Fiosffer Dyfi.

Challenges

Can you think of something that you do which has a negative impact on the planet?

The Dyfi Biosphere is a unique place - there is nowhere else like it on the planet. But it is connected to the rest of the world. Things we do here have a wider global impact, and things that are happening elsewhere in the world also affect the Dyfi Biosphere.

Climate change will cause changes to the kinds of birds and wildlife we see here. It will also cause changes to wildlife habitats, sea levels, and the way we use the land. Our challenge is to conserve these habitats, adapt to these changes and live more sustainably. We need to reduce our environmental footprint and the impacts of climate change. Can you find out a way of living more sustainably?
