The Department of Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences and the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic occupy the entirety of Grier Hall on the MSUM campus. Both undergraduate (pre-professional) and graduate programs are offered. Students finishing their bachelor's degree at Moorhead may choose to apply to the master's degree program here or apply elsewhere.

We would be delighted to have students and their families visit the MSUM campus. Plan to come to Grier Hall to see our facilities and meet some of our faculty. Please call the Office of Admissions at 1-800-593-7246 to set an appointment for a campus tour and visit to our department.

The programs of study offered by this department are designed for students who are interested in the normal and disordered processes of human communication. The title of the undergraduate major, Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences, indicates that the bachelor’s degree is a professional degree. It is designed to qualify students for admission to graduate level study of speech-language pathology or audiology, but is also appropriate for those who will pursue careers in hearing conversation, education of the hearing impaired, and other areas. Individual classes are appropriate as electives for students with majors in speech communication, elementary and secondary education, special education, reading, psychology, sociology, anthropology, or health. This major is offered with a four-year degree guarantee. Contact the Admissions office or the department for details.

Undergraduate students from other countries should inquire about becoming eligible for instate tuition.

Department of Speech/Language/Hearing SciencesCourse Descriptions

SLHS 101 Survey of Speech-Language-Hearing Disorders (3)The study of the basic anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing including basic acoustics. Overview of the processes of speech, language, and hearing, the normal development of speech and language in children, and the major speech, language, and hearing disorders. The role of speech-language pathologists and audiologists will be discussed.

SLHS 402 Neuroanatomy/Physiology of Communication and Swallowing (3)The study of the Central, Peripheral, and Autonomic Nervous Systems. Lab includes probing of human brain specimens to identify the above structures. Neuroanatomy and Physiology of Swallowing, Speech, Language, Hearing, Somatosensory System, and the Primary Sensory and Motor Cortices. Intro to Dysphagia, Aphasia, Dysarthria, Apraxia, Traumatic Brain Injury, and the Neuroanatomy affected by these conditions as they relate to the work of the Speech-Language Pathologist, Speech Scientist, and Audiologist. Prerequisite: SLHS 202

SLHS 171 American Sign Language I (3)An introduction to American Sign Language vocabulary and grammar, including issues of nonverbal communication through pantomime and body movement.

SLHS 172 American Sign Language II (3)Continuation of SLHS 171, including communicating personal and family information, giving directions and descriptions, and asking questions.Prerequisite: SLHS 171 or permission of instructor.

SLHS 421 Speech Science and Instrumentation (3)The study of speech acoustics and physiology, incorporating both voice and articulatory aspects of speech signal production, as well as the instrumentation needed for measurement of speech acoustic signals.Prerequisite: SLHS 201, SLHS 202, SLHS 307

SLHS 201 Linguistic Phonetics (3)The production and perception of sounds of English speech; the use of International Phonetic Alphabet; the application of the principles of phonetic analysis to oral communication.

SLHS 424 Childhood Stuttering (2)A study of the theories of disfluency, fluency development,and stuttering in children. Assessment, prevention, andtreatment of childhood stuttering is included.Prerequisite: SLHS 202

SLHS 202 Anatomy and Physiology of Normal Speech and Hearing (3)The study of the anatomy and basic physiology of the speech and hearing mechanisms and the major underlying scientific concepts.

SLHS 446 Clinical Experience (3)On campus supervised clinical experience in speech/ language pathology or audiology with children or adults. May be repeated.Prerequisite: SLHS 343

Professional Issues and Clinical Practice Management (3)The course will include a survey of professional issues facing today’s professional including such topics as credentialing, ethics, and legal considerations. Service delivery in schools, health care, and private practice will also be addressed.Prerequisite: SLHS 343

Rehabilitation Audiology (4)A survey of principles of audiological and vestibular intervention for children through adults. Special emphasis on amplification technology.Prerequisite: SLHS 271

Topical Seminar in SLHS (1-3)An examination of the literature on a selected topic of current interest.

Research Applications in SLHS (3)The study and application of research principles and methods in speech-language and hearing sciences.Prerequisite: MATH 136

Individual Study (1-3)Selected readings or a guided independent research project in some aspect of communication disorders. May be repeated for up to 6 credits.Prerequisite: Instructor approval

SLHS 321 Articulation and Phonological Disorders (3)The nature, etiology, assessment, and treatment of speech sound differences and disorders in children.Prerequisite: SLHS 101 and SLHS 201

SLHS 322 Language Disorders in Children (3)Nature, etiology, assessment, and treatment of language disorders in children.Prerequisite: SLHS 101 and SLHS 204

SLHS 343 Clinical Procedures (3)Basic defining and recording of communication behavior, development of reporting skills to include lesson plans, report writing and conferring and consulting with clients and professionals. Includes supervised observation of clinical procedures applied to actual clients.Prerequisites: SLHS 321 and SLHS 322

SLHS 347 Augmentative and Alternative Communication and Literacy Acquisition (3)The nature of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and other assistive technologies for persons with special needs across the life span. Includes components of AAC systems and basic assessment and intervention procedures. Additionally includes an overview of typical literacy acquisition.Prerequisite: SLHS 204

Awarded to one Minnesota resident MSUM undergraduate student in the amount of $400.00.

• Faculty Scholarship Awarded to one or two MSUM undergraduate students in the amount of $400.00–$600.00.

• NSSLHA SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to one undergraduate and one graduate student in the amount of $300.00-$500.00.

• Lutes Scholarship Awarded to one first year graduate student in the amount of $1000.00.

• Virgil Black Endowed Scholarship Awarded to one second year graduate student in the amount of $750.00.

• Graduate Assistantship Awarded to 8-10 each of our first and second year graduate students attending the Speech Pathology program in the range of $2700-3700 each

• COMMUNICATIVE D ISORDERS SCHOLARSHIP

This $1000 scholarship is available to students accepted into a graduate level program in SLP and/or Audiology at a college/university in U.S. accredited by ASHA’s Council of Academic Accreditation.

• GENE ANDERSON SERTOMA SCHOLARSHIP

• HEARING IMPAIRED SCHOLARSHIP

This $1000 scholarship is available to students with a minimum 40dB bilateral hearing loss as evidenced by an SRT of 40dB or greater in both ears.

• HONORS APPRENTICE

President’s Honors Scholarship awards are $3,000 annually and renewable for three years.

• MSHA Scholarship Awarded to student Minnesota Speech and Hearing Association members pursuing a graduate degree in SLP, Aud, or Speech Hearing Science. Four $2000 scholarships per year are awarded.

Additional scholarships available

• General MSUM Scholarships Campus based scholarships are available through MSUM from $300 – 1,800. Some scholarships are renewable.

• Transfer Scholarships Awarded to undergraduate transfer students through MSUM. Scholarships range from $300 – 1,000.

• Freshman Minority Scholarship Awarded to students in the top 25% of high school class (must be a minority). Scholarships range from $500 - $2,200 per academic year.

• Upperclass Scholarship Awarded to a currently enrolled MSUM student pursuing their first undergrad degree, who has completed at least 15 MSUM credits by the end of the current fall semester.

• Upperclass Minority Scholarship Awarded to a full time minority student whose minimum GPA is 2.5 by the end of the current fall semester.

• Gates Millennium Scholarship Awarded to thousands of outstanding low-income students. Candidates must have a GPA of 3.3 to apply

• Two Feathers Fund American Indian Scholarship Awarded to an American Indian, any major in the amount of $1,000.

• Homeland Security Undergraduate Scholarships

Awarded to rising Juniors, majoring in physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences in the amount of $1,000 per month for 9 months. Appointments are given for two years with full tuition and fees paid.
