Writing skills

• Subordination: Combining two simple sentences by turning one of them into a subordinate clause

• A subordinate clause—also called a dependent clause—will begin with a subordinate conjunction or a relative pronoun and will contain both a subject and a verb. This combination of words will not form a complete sentence. It will instead make a reader want additional information to finish the thought.

Page 16: Unit Three The Present Designed by Shi Yuan Book Ⅰ The Third Two Periods Writing and Exercise

• Here is a list of subordinate conjunctions:

• after althoughas because beforeeven if even thoughif in order that onceprovided that rather thansince so that thanthat thoughunless until whenwhenever wherewhereas wherever whetherwhile why

Page 17: Unit Three The Present Designed by Shi Yuan Book Ⅰ The Third Two Periods Writing and Exercise

• Here are your relative pronouns:

• that

• Which whichever

• Who whoever whom whosewhosever whomever

• as

Page 18: Unit Three The Present Designed by Shi Yuan Book Ⅰ The Third Two Periods Writing and Exercise

• examples:

• After Amy sneezed all over the tuna salad• After = subordinate conjunction; Amy = subject; sneezed =

verb.

• Once Adam smashed the spider• Once = subordinate conjunction; Adam = subject; smashed =

verb.

• Until Mr. Sanchez has his first cup of coffee• Until = subordinate conjunction; Mr. Sanchez = subject; has =

verb.

• Who ate handfuls of Cheerios with his bare hands• Who = relative pronoun; Who = subject; ate = verb.

Page 19: Unit Three The Present Designed by Shi Yuan Book Ⅰ The Third Two Periods Writing and Exercise

• Remember this important point:

• A subordinate clause cannot stand alone as a sentence because it does not provide a complete thought. The reader is left wondering, "So what happened?" A word group that begins with a capital letter and ends with a period must contain at least one main clause. Otherwise, you will have written a fragment, a major error.

• Example:• After Amy sneezed all over the tuna salad.• So what happened? Did Amy throw it down the garbage

disposal or serve it on toast to her friends? No complete thought = fragment.

Model Writing

• The old lady was very excited on her 80th birthday because she was hoping that her daughter would come to see her. She was sure that even if her daughter could not come for a visit, she would at least send a parcel to her. After all, eighty is a special birthday. So the old lady waited eagerly for the postman. But her daughter did not send a present. Instead, she only sent a printed card along with a cheque. The old lady felt so disappointed, so hurt, and so angry that with trembling fingers she tore up the cheque. Anyone can write a cheque, but only a caring daughter or son will choose a special present for such a rare occasion.

• 范文:

• My First Step in College

• On the very first day in college, I was surprised to find the campus was so large. Believe it or not, I even lost my way to the dormitory when I returned from the dining hall.

• During the first week, I missed my family so much that I telephoned them every day. In my dreams, I often found myself having a good time with my friends back in my hometown. To tell the truth, I couldn’t help crying every time I woke up.

• By and by, I managed to shake off the feeling of being homesick and made a lot of friends. There were only 20 students in my class. New to each other at first, but we became good friends very soon. In fact, we seemed to be living in a big family.

• In college, we had more free time than in the middle school. In the evenings, we were not required to study in the classroom. Instead, we could go everywhere and do whatever we want. I borrowed a number of books from the library and most of them were novels, which I had no chance to read in the middle school. Besides reading books in my spare time, I played table tennis for fun and made enormous progress.

• I will never forget those special days when I took my first step in college.
