User Manual for using ArcMap application
1. Opening WMS services using ArcMap
ArcMap is a graphical user interface application in which there are incorporated
advanced tools for manipulation of shape files and geo – database with an intuitive
interface of the ArcGIS file management application, called ArcCatalog with some of
the functionality of ArcInfo that includes capabilities for data manipulation, editing, and
analysis.
ArcGIS is Esri's geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and
geographic information. It is used for: creating and using maps; compiling geographic
data; analyzing mapped information; sharing and discovering geographic information;
using maps and geographic information in a range of applications; and managing
geographic information in a database. The system provides an infrastructure for making
maps and geographic information available throughout an organization, across a
community, and openly on the Web.
The user adds new WMS (Web Mapping Service) by right click on the WMS button from
the right side menu (catalog), as shown on Figure 1.1. The WMS connection form
opens (Figure 1.2) and the user enters the URL received by buying the service, the
username and password in order to load the service (Figure 1.3). Then he can see the
service (the name of the layer) listed below the created WMS service with the provided
URL (Figure1. 4).
The user can see the wms by drag and drop of the name of layer from the right catalog
list to the map area (Figure 1.5). The layer will be displayed on the left side layers tree
with a checkbox beside the name. The checkbox will be marked as the layer is
displayed on the map. The user may add as many layers on the map as there are
provided / bought from the url of the wms services and then to add or remove them from
the map by marking and deselecting the checkbox beside the layer name accordingly.
For each point of the map, the feature info is available by clicking on the info i button,
and then clicking on the map, which will open a table with feature info for all layers
displayed on the clicked point (Figure 1.6).

2. Opening WMS services using QGIS
QGIS (Quantum GIS) is an application that enables users to create maps with multiple
layers in different projections. This application supports creating and opening raster
layers which consist of set of images and vector layers which are defined by vector data
per feature, which can be point, line or a polygon.
QGIS supports raster images in various image formats (in the case of our application
the images are in png format) as well as geo-referencing of raster images, which means
placing the images on proper location on the map, according to the selected geodetic
reference system.
The user adds new connection for WMS (Web Mapping Service) by right click on the
WMS button from the left side menu. The user selects New Connection and new
window opens for defining new connection for accessing WMS services from it.
Figure 2.1 – Adding WMS connection
Figure 2.2 – Creating WMS connection
The user fills in the Name field with the name he wants to use for the connection, enters
the link got when buying the service in the URL field. The User name is required and the
user enters his username used for logging into the OSSP WEB GIS application when
buying the service. The password field is not required, as the user will be prompted for
the password when he will want to open the service from the connection regardless.
Figure 2. 3 – Filling in the form for creating WMS connection
By clicking the OK button, the new WMS connection is created and it will show in the
WMS connections list (in this case consisting of KIS, rasters, sde, testsde, UCAD) and
the user can see the bought services from each by clicking the plus (+) sign.
Figure 2. 4 – Connections for accessing WMS services
The user accesses the service by right click on the mouse on the proper name from the
list of bought services (e.g. ADMINISTRATIVNI_GRANICI shown on Figure 2.5,
NASELENI_MESTA, shown on Figure 2.6) and then selecting Add Layer option to add
the layer on the map.

Optionally, the user may select more layers from the list of WMS services and then to
click on the Add selected layers option, which will add all selected layers from the list on
the map at once, so he user may see them all together, as shown on Figure 2.7 and
Figure 2.8 below.

Borders)

After the layer is added on the map, the user can select the option to see the feature
info (shown on Figure 2.9) and then by clicking a point on the map a table with Feature
Info for a selected layer from those displayed on the map opens (e.g. for the service
NASELENI_MESTA is shown on Figure 2.10), or for all the layers displayed on the map
(e.g. on Figure 2.11 for the layers NASELENI_MESTA, ADMINISTRATIVNI_GRANICI
and SCDP_GR, and on Figure 2.12 for the layets NASELENI_MESTA,
ADMINISTRATIVNI_GRANICI and LANDCOVER).

To remove a layer from the map, the user selects the layer he wishes to remove from
the left side list of WMS services, and then from the Layer tab on the main menu selects
the option Remove Layer/group. In case the user wants to remove all the layers from
the map, selects the option Hide all layers, and can see them back on the map by
selecting Show all layers from the Layers tab on the main menu. If the user wants to
see only some of the layers on the list, selects them and them selects the option Show
selected layers from the Layers tab.
