Weatherford Sucker Rods
High-strength sucker rods.Weatherford’s arti cial-lift systems offer premium-quality, high-strengthsucker rods with high and ultrahigh load ratings plus corrosion-resistantproperties. Each rod is heat treated and has pin ends machined with APIrolled threads.
Ultrahigh-strength EL ® sucker rods.Designed to provide an ultrahigh-load rating and corrosion fatigueresistance, EL rods are Weatherford’s premium line of high-strengthcoupled sucker rods. Our exclusive induction-case-hardening processgives these rods the ultimate in fatigue resistance.
Ordinary sucker rods tend to fail from fatigue that originates at thesurface, which is under tension. The unique engineering of Weatherford’sEL rods puts them in a class of their own. The compression layer at thesurface of each rod remains under compression, even under normaloperating tensile loads. With the surface thus protected from tensilestresses, the chance of developing fatigue cracks is greatly reduced.
In addition, the stringent quality-control procedures we apply to themanufacture of these rods promote reliable and long-service life.
EL sucker rods are available in 5/8-, 3/4-, 7/8-, 1- and 1 1/8-in. diameters.
All sizes are offered in 25- and 30-ft (7.6- and 9.1-m) lengths.
Applications.Super-high load capacity in mild, sweet (CO 2) and sour (H 2S) corrosiveenvironments when applicable corrosion inhibiting practices are followed.

Quenched and tempered sucker rods.Designed for high-strength and fatigue performance, S88 rods provide anintermediate step between the normalized Grade D and ultrahigh-strengthEL® rods. These rods are manufactured with 3130M nickel-chrome steel;they are quenched and tempered, which results in enhanced toughnessand a ner-grain structure, making them capable of better fatigueresistance. For example, the quenched and tempered rods typicallyhave charpy impact results in the +70 ft-lb range, while normalized andtempered rods are typically in the 20 ft-lb range. This enhanced toughnessprovides the added fatigue resistance needed in extreme applications.
S88 sucker rods are available in 5/8-*, 3/4-, 7/8-, 1- and 1 1/8-in.*diameters. All sizes are available in 25- and 30-ft* (7.6- and 9.1-m*)lengths.
Applications.S88 special service deep, highly loaded wells in mildly corrosiveenvironments, provided satisfactory corrosion inhibiting practices arefollowed.
S87 API D rod is recommended for mild corrosive or inhibited wells;also recommended for CO 2 wells (sweet corrosive environments).Manufactured with 3130 modi ed alloy steel.
S67 API Grade D rod is recommended for heavy-duty pumping innoncorrosive or inhibited wells. This economical, high-yield rod ismanufactured with 1029 modi ed alloy steel.

T66/XD and HD sucker rods.T66/XD rods are extremely dependable and are designed for high-strengthservice. They provide an intermediate step between the Grade D andultrahigh-strength EL ® rod.
These rods are manufactured with 4138M chrome-moly steel, makingthem capable of handling the toughest stresses. The special alloy steelprovides resistance to sul de stress cracking.
The HD sucker rods provide an additional intermediate step betweenthe Grade D and the ultrahigh-strength EL rods. The HD rods aremanufactured with 4332SRX nickel-chrome-moly steel designed for high-
strength service.
The metallurgical makeup of the T66/XD and HD sucker rods is checkedcontinually for quality assurance. Rods are forged, normalized andtempered, and shot blasted; and pins are precision machinedand roll-threaded.
This continuous in-process inspection con rms that only the nest sucker rods bear the Weatherford name.
Applications.Deep, highly loaded wells in mildly corrosive environments, providedsatisfactory corrosion inhibiting practices are followed.

Weatherford Sucker Rods
API grade rods.Weatherford’s API sucker rods are manufactured to API 11B speci cationsand are ISO 9001/API Q1 certi ed in one of the most modern facilities of its type in the industry. These rods feature fully rolled, cold-formed threadsdesigned to provide a precise, smooth, reinforced thread structure notattainable by normal machine-cut threads. Metal is displaced rather thanremoved, and the resultant cold working strengthens the thread root.Weatherford’s rods are cleaned by shot-blasting to remove any scale andoxidation, then liberally coated with rust inhibitors and carefully palletizedin bundles for safe transport and handling.
COROD ® continuous sucker rods.Weatherford manufactures the COROD continuous sucker rod for distinctproduction enhancement and cost-saving advantages in various rod-stringapplications. Unlike conventional sucker rods, which are coupled every25 or 30 ft (7.6 and 9.1 m), continuous sucker rods require couplings onlyat the top and bottom of the rod string, regardless of well depth. With fewer
joints, this solid length of steel is lighter and enhances tubing life becausecontact between the tubing and sucker rod is uniform. It also addressesmany premature tubing wear challenges, especially in directional andhorizontal wells.
Special applications.Special applications, such as highly deviated wells and heavy, high-viscosityoil production, are prime opportunities for the high-strength, high-torquecapabilities of the COROD system. COROD sucker rods are ideally suitedto both reciprocating and rotary pumping applications.

Recommended MaximumWeight Indicator Pull
Tabulated here is the maximum weightindicator pull (load) that can be applied toa stuck sucker-rod string. The ratings arebased on 90 percent of the minimum yieldstrength for a sucker-rod string in “likenew” condition. The maximum pull shouldbe reached with a steady pull andnot ashock load. For a tapered string, calculatethe weight of the sucker rod above thesmallest and lowest section, and add thecalculated weight to the value tabulatedhere for the type and size of the lower section. For a single-taper sucker-rodstring, the values tabulated here are themaximum pull.

Weatherford couplings.Weatherford’s Grade T and Grade SM sucker-rod couplings aremanufactured to strict quality-control standards from high-strengthalloy steel and conform to API Speci cation 11B.
Weatherford’s Hi-T™ couplings are designed to carry the high-torquerequirements of progressing cavity pumping applications and the highloads of deep wells.
The threads of these couplings are cold form-rolled produced bydisplacement of material rather than by removal of material, as in thecut thread. Rolling the thread results in a compressive stress at theroot of the thread, giving maximum strength to the traditional weakpoint of cut-thread couplings.
Weatherford’s sprayed-metal couplings have a corrosion-resistantsurface with a low coef cient of friction that reduces wear on the tubingand the coupling. These couplings are recommended for deviated wells.
Weatherford’s couplings are available in standard OD, oversized andslimhole con gurations in sizes of 5/8 through 1-1/8 in.

PRO/KC ™ sucker rod connection. The PRO/KC connection is truly an innovation in sucker-rod connectiondesign. After extensive laboratory and eld testing and thorough niteelement analysis, the PRO/KC connection repeatedlyoutperformed its standard
API connection counterpart.
The PRO/KC connectionwas designed for areasthat see continuous pinconnection failures. Itprovides the connectionstability you need againsttension, torque, bendingand fatigue.
The design of the PRO/KC connection ensures the safety of sucker-rodconnections during makeup and operation, providing
• equal contact pressure of both pin shoulders;• equal pre-load stretch of both pin necks;• equal contact pressure of both pin noses against center torque button;• pre-load stretch at the coupling center.
All of these advantages result in longer-lasting sucker-rod connections, reducing nonproductive time and sucker-rod replacement in high-fatigue areas.
Flawless 13 1/2-monthperformance.The PRO/KC connection was
eld tested in a progressing cavitypumping (PCP) application for 13-1/2 months. During operationsthe client experienced ve seizureevents, causing failure to severalcomponents. The PRO/KCconnection successfully protectedthe sucker rods during these
ve events.
The four-part PRO/KC connection isdesigned to protect and extend sucker-rodlife better than a three-part design.
The PRO/KC connection is simple indesign yet strong.
Finite element analysis providesevidence that the distribution of stressis accomplished in the PRO/KC design.
