Last Easter 2016, I removed eight orphan Easter Lilies from the Gathering Area and repotted them in a large planter. I placed the planter in my hydrangea and azalea garden and never touched them again. This early spring, when I was crawling around the garden fertilizing my plants, I bumped up against the planter and was surprised to see that the lilies had come back green and healthy. I refreshed their soil, fertilized, and cared for them, till they bloomed this Easter. The plants were tall, strong, and sturdy, and the blooms were Easter lily stunning white! They were a beautiful symbol of the resurrection and the renewal of life. They had been planted in good soil. Every time I saw them they made me smile and warmed my heart. Over the next few weeks, our Gospel lessons will be about God’s words planting something in our hearts. As we know, not all soils are alike. Like the parable of the sower, the parable is really about the soil in which the seed is planted. The seeds represent the teachings of Jesus. The type of soil that the seed is sown into determines the response to the good news of God’s Kingdom. Read the parable of the sower in Matthew, and consider then within your hearts the type of soil the word of God falls onto. As disciples, we are asked to cultivate good soil within our hearts, so we may hear the word of God —“the seeds” — understand it, live it, and then become good sowers of God’s word to others. As one of the writers from Richard Rohr’s meditations wrote, “How is God served by people who fail to germinate? God is delighted in every human whose heart breaks opens and blooms. We are a work in progress individually and collectively. Creation itself is not static but dynamic.”

Blessings, Deacon Jean

A Voice from the Deacon’s Bench

ECW: Learning & Serving Twenty-three attended our May meeting and potluck luncheon. Thanks are extended to all who contributed to the buffet and to Toni DeLuca for her hospitality and the use of her beautiful home. Ruth Ann Grothe reported that the “Support the Girls” Project to help homeless and needy women and girls in Brunswick and New Hanover Counties was a success. Barbara Bartell distributed ditty bags to be filled for the Episcopal Farmworkers in Newton Grove. Ruth Ann Grothe reported that $195 was collected for CPC. Mary Klinedinst moved that we add $105 to this amount, seconded by Susan Sprouse and approved. Father Dave said that he would see that that total was raised to $350. The St. James Day Picnic will be held on Sunday, July 30. Barbara & Dan Bartell and Connie Esposito are to be thanked for volunteering to help with setup and cleanup at the Picnic. Father Davis performed a Service of Installation for the 2017-2018 Officers (President: Susan Dickerson, Vice President: Barbara Freeman, Treasurer: Ruth Ann Grothe, Recording Secretary: Vera Redin, Corresponding Secretary: Edith Edwards). Dawn Kellerman presented a card and gift certificate to Father Dave for his work with ECW and outgoing President Bonnie Dolph was given a card and gift certificate. The next ECW Meeting will be Wednesday, September 13 in Bliss Hall. Enjoy your summer!

SAINT JAMES DAY CELEBRATION

The parish will celebrate our patron Saint’s feast day on Sunday, July 30th. In order that we might gather as a parish family, we will have only one service that weekend at 10 a.m. Mark your calendars and come join in this celebration, as we come together to share in the joy of all those who have blessed us with the great legacy we call St. James the Fisherman. Help recall the movement of those who went before us: starting in 1935 along the banks of Gause Landing, continuing in a nearby one-room building that served as our parish church until 1962, and then moving to our current location where we have continued to grow in size and ministry. Because it will be my final service we will not be holding our parish picnic following it.

Peace - Father Dave+

June 20, 2017 Dear Fisherfolk, By now you may be wondering what is being done to honor Fr. Dave and Pat as they leave St. James the Fisherman. A celebration will be held on St. James Day (July 30) which is a single service (10:00 am) weekend. First, a more formal program will be conducted in the Nave just before the end of the service. This will be followed by a light brunch in Bliss Hall during which we can reminisce on fond memories of Fr. Dave’s years of service. In tribute to his service, a collection is being taken to be dedicated to his favorite outreach projects. If you wish to participate, make your check payable to Rev. David J. Davis and send it or deliver it to Connie Esposito. She will collect them and they will be presented to Fr. Dave as a gift from the parish during the celebration. A gift from the Vestry will also be presented. In order to participate in and share your love and memories of Fr. Dave and Pat, a Memory Album will be available to all parishioners. You may bring brief written expressions of your memories, pictures, or other memorabilia to the office to be included in the album. We look forward to a happy, spirited event and sincerely hope that you will be able to attend. Peace, Cai Raber Senior Warden

Altar Flowers Each week the flowers on the altar add a beautiful touch to our Worship Services. These flowers are provided solely through donations to our Flower Fund by those dedicating them in honor, memory or thanksgiving of someone. Unfortunately we have a large number of weekends where either one or both of the altar vases have not been donated, which is depleting our backup Flower funds. The cost is $35 per vase and the signup chart is located in Bliss Hall.

Choir’s Summer Break Our choir continues their much deserved summer break until September 11th. We will, however, be gifted by their uplifted voices at our St. James Day service (July 24th). Our organist continues to provide us music to sing during the Choir’s summer break, so please uplift your voices in joyous song just a bit louder during the choir’s break. Also, please give some serious thought and prayer to joining our choir; and contact our Music Director, Margaret Smicklas (phone – 253-4573; e-mail - [email protected]).

Farmworkers’ Ministry

On Wednesday June 7th, we delivered all your collected items to the farm workers at Newton Grove. We were greeted by Sylvia who is our Liaison regarding the farm workers. She was very thankful to St. James the Fisherman. The items we donated help in so many ways. Thank you all for helping out again this year.

Pictorial Directory Update Addendum

Each year, new faces join our parish family, and we try to include photos of them in an annual addendum to our pictorial directory. So if you do not appear in our current base 2015 Directory or 2016 Addendum, and would like your photo to be included, we ask that you bring (or e-mail) a fairly recent photo of yourself/selves to the Parish Office, or come in and I’ll take your photo. If sending it via e-mail please send it to me at: [email protected]. If you submit a printed picture it will be returned to you through your parish mailboxes. Our goal is to have the new Directory Addendum out by mid-August, so that everyone can insert it into their 2015 Directory copy, so if sending a photo please do so by August 1st. Also, if you do not have a copy of the 2015 Directory or 2016 Addendum, please let me know and I’ll put a copy in your parish mailbox.

Thank you! Connie Esposito

Vestry Corner Your vestry met on Tuesday, June 6th, and, after opening prayer, approved the May Meeting Minutes and Financial Reports. The vestry then discussed four items of Old Business, as follows.

a. Fr. Dave announced his intent to retire effective August 1st; St. James Day Service will be his final service after 13+ years of service. b. Fr. Dave noted a need, in consideration of his retirement, to increase the Administrative Assistant's hours from 30 to 40 per week. Motion made to increase Connie's hours to 40 hours per week starting immediately made by Bill Grothe, seconded by Sally Manifold, motion passed. c. Bill Grothe noted a desire to try and repair, rather than replace, the front doors. Motion made to have front doors repaired with the amount of $75.00 up to $150.00 made by Sally Manifold, seconded by Anne Neely, motion passed. d. Cai Raber noted that Don Irvin had received an agreement from Bill McClellan to serve as a new Vestry Member.

They then moved on to two items of New Business, as follows:

a. Anne Neely noted that the DOK has a meeting Saturday 10 June 2017, and will work on making a decision at that time on our Communities In Schools (CIS) Partner School Realignment and a Parish Liaison to CIS. b. Anne Neely and Cai Raber noted that the New Members' Gathering will be held June 14th at 4:00 pm starting in Bliss Hall.

Several Vestry Members then made the following general remarks:

a. Bill Grothe noted that he and Fr. Dave worked out back getting rid of yard debris b. Sam Farag is looking into Endowment Fund investments with higher returns c. Deacon Jean said Coat Closet is still getting coats; and that the Orthopaedic closet is getting items as well.

The meeting was then adjourned after a closing prayer, to reconvene on July 11th at 5:30PM. Vestry meetings minutes are posted in Bliss Hall; and these meetings are open to all.

Celebrating Newcomers Into The Parish Family

During our June 11th services we welcomed Debby Boyd, Heather Holbrook, Kenneth Krawcheck, Janet Thompson, and Alice Wargo into our parish. As “a Christian community of loving, caring members who reach out to welcome others through social action ministry and inspirational, sacramental worship,” it was indeed a joy to take this purposeful time to say welcome to these people, who have made a decision to make St. James the Fisherman their community of faith and parish family.

SBIC CORNER Ruth Ann Campbell-Grothe, the St. James Representative on the South Brunswick Interchurch Council (SBIC), attended the monthly meeting held on Monday, June 6, 2017, at Shallotte Presbyterian Church at 8:45 a.m. Tom Horan opened the meeting by announcing that Don and Priscilla Evans had resigned from the SBIC to concentrate their efforts on their church. Ruth Ann Campbell-Grothe presented the slate of officers for election this year. The general council approved Linda Herrick and Paul Carman as Vice President and Treasurer, respectively. The FY 2017-2018 Budget was approved as presented after much discussion. The CROP Hunger Walk will combine with “Praise in the Park” this year. SBIC, GSMA, and the Town of Shallotte will be the three contributors. Eric Wagner has agreed to lead the CROP Hunger Walk portion for the SBIC. He will have a meeting soon. Volunteers will be needed. Tom and Linda Herrick attended a Chamber of Commerce meeting and recommended that the SBIC join the Chamber for another year. After some discussion, it was agreed that we not participate in the Oyster Festival this year due to lack of leadership and use that money to renew our membership with the Chamber of Commerce. We reviewed possible fundraising events for FY 2017-2018:

• October 7, 2017 – Sunset at Sunset (Need a coordinator).

• November 5, 2017 – CROP Hunger Walk/GSMA Praise in the Park (Eric Wagner).

• November 23, 2017 – Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels (Need a coordinator).

• January 13, 2018 – Run for Food (Mary Pritchard).

• April TBD, 2018 – Spring Concert (Gloria Wimmer at Calabash Covenant Presbyterian Church).

• April 28-29, 2018 – Days at the Docks at Holden Beach (Unsure at this time).

The SBIC Food Pantry has served 1,340

The SBIC Food Pantry has served 1,340 children, 2,420 adults, and 1,608 seniors for a total of 5,368 January through May 2017. Mary Pritchard, Food Pantry Coordinator, stated that the SBIC received a grant of $9,000 from the Catherine Kennedy Foundation. She also received a $900 donation from ORCA, and $600 from Days at the Docks. Mitch Hewett, Technology Coordinator, stated that we had received a check for $28.83 from PayPal. Mitch has also updated the Run for Food Website and will be creating a Website for the CROP Hunger Walk soon. Gloria Wimmer, Membership Chairperson, will try to meet with those churches who are not sending representatives to the meetings. Only 10 of the 17 churches were represented at today’s meeting. A Public Relations/Communications Chairperson is needed to publicize SBIC news, activities, and fundraising events through press releases, newsletters, and other publicity. Ruth Ann Campbell-Grothe agreed to prepare the monthly newsletter until such time as a new PR/Communications Chairperson can be found. Please send Ruth Ann photos and information for the newsletter and also for the Beacon. An Emergency Assistance Chairperson is also needed to advocate for the housing and utility needs of South Brunswick residents. Gloria Wimmer requested that we all pray for seniors who live alone and have no family nearby to visit them. Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers to visit some of these people. Mary Pritchard suggested contacting BSRI regarding this issue. The next SBIC General Meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 3, 2017, at Shallotte Presbyterian Church at 8:45 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend the monthly SBIC Meetings. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ruth Ann or Bill Grothe, your St. James Representatives, at 910-575-1247 or at [email protected]. Until next month…
