Chemical residues, strands of fiber, samples as small as 1 mm. wide by 4 mm. long can be analyzed by infra­red without special sample prepara­tion using this micro unit. Attenu­ated total reflectance analysis is ac­complished by internally reflecting a beam of radiation from the contact faces of two materials that are in con­tact with each other. The transfer of energy between the two is roughly proportional to the ratio of the indices of refraction. The refractive index of a material changes at wavelengths at which absorption bands occur thus producing a spectrum similar to a conventional absorption spectrum.
