George Harrison’s “Got my mind set on you” topped the “Billboard

Hot 100”. Syracuse’s football team aided by Deval Glover beat Navy en route to its 11-0-1 record and the de-bate over the spotted owl played out in newspapers across the country. And it was at exactly 10:30 AM, Saturday morning April 30th, 1988 that I paused to double check the location of the published position of South Beach Harbor at (37° 46’ 47.5” NORTH -122° 23’ 16.2 WEST) with my authorized replica Thomas Godfrey autograph model octant, which is kind of like a bronze GPS without batteries. I remember stand-ing there, the antique navigation devise cradled in my hand, saying to myself: “What in the Sam Hill am I doing here joining a yacht club that’s not even… a yacht club? Or am I just experiencing a classic case of joiner’s remorse?” But that’s just the kind of guy I am: thoughtful, analytical, courteous, well dressed, neat in appearance (some might say a slave to fashion) always punctual, bus my own table at the Club, favorite color: blue and yes I do like long walks on the beach and piña coladas. But that’s neither here nor there, because people walking past me going into the meeting were beginning to point and stare.

Little did I know as I entered that noisy assembly hall, with fifty-three different conversations going on at once, that I would meet people who were to become my close personal friends for life. “Hi, I’m Ray Hall” I said, which seemed like a good way to break the ice as I stuck out my hand. A robust fellow grabbed it and said, “Yes, I’m sure you are, but what San Francisco needs is a community sailing

program. If Boston can have one, we should have one also!” and he was gone. That went so well I noncha-lantly approached a group of ladies, “Hi, I’m Ray…” They all looked up at me, optimism shining in their eyes, “Yes, that’s nice, but do you have a corkscrew by any chance?” Mentally I wrote a note-to-self: From now on always, always carry a corkscrew! Disappointed, they hurried off leaving me with a fellow thrusting a clip board at me. “Hi, I’m…” I began. “Sign in,” he said, “name, address, phone number and your Name the Club suggestion.” (Historic Note: With 40 members voting the Captain Raymond Patrick Hall Yacht Club entry only lost by a narrow margin of 39 votes.) The rest of the meeting was just a lot of people talking but those are the highlights of our Club’s first member-ship meeting twenty-five years ago.

Beginnings, endings... celebration, reflection. Even as we celebrate the opening of sailing season

on the bay, the beginning of our club’s 25th year, and the start of the 34th America’s Cup “Summer of Racing,” the time has come for me to leave you. For the past three years I have been in line for a diplomatic posting in the U.S. Foreign Service. I have been offered, and have accepted, a federal appointment as commercial attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My role will be to advocate and develop job-creating business for the United States. I leave for training in Washington, DC, on May 19 and will head across the Pacific at the beginning of July. Your club is in great hands. You have a terrific set of officers, direc-tors, and committee chairs. The board and I have discussed the transition at length and will for-mally take up the board vote for an interim commodore at our May 2 board meeting. There are exceptional nominees under consideration, and the bylaws authorize a board appointment when a vacancy occurs. Outrageous Fortune rarely permits perfect timing for life chang-es, though she has afforded me some treasured time with SBYC. In the mid-1990s when I was building my sailing skills, I sailed Friday Night races with various members, including Pete Hamm on

that Hunter he used to have. When I bought my boat in 2002, joining the club was a first order of busi-ness. SBYC’s youth camp taught my daughter to sail starting in 2007, I joined the board in 2008, and SBYC was a nexus for much of my San Francisco Chronicle and other sailing writing from 2009 to now. It has been an amazing honor to serve as your commodore at this extraordinary time in our history. Ideally, I would have chosen to finish this year with you, to savor every moment of the America’s Cup, and to advance a few more items in my current position with the Governor’s Office of Business. But the decision was now or never. I’ll be happy to field any ques-tions at the Member’s Meeting on May 10, when we’ll toast to our club’s 25th Anniversary!

I invite you to join me at the club on May 18 for a summer kickoff-plus-going-away party. I’m looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible between now and my departure. In the meantime, enjoy your club. It’s a very special place.

Opening Day on the Bay was spectacular this year! We properly celebrated this traditional “Right of

Spring with Remus Fiz and Bloody Mary service enabeled, or was it inhibited? The delightful decorating of Anabel which, once again, won a prize in the boat parade! After that Bob and Martin’s Oyster Festo sold a record number of oysters and clams, a fabulous wine tasting and food pairing sponsored by the Napa Valley Vintners association entertained everyone into the evening. The “ret-ro” band, Fossil, provided music from every era to accompany the festivity. Our May 10th member meeting will mark the 25th Anniversary of the Club formation. Come celebrate with a champagne toast by Commodore Paul Oliva in commemorating flutes engraved specifically for the occasion offered to the members in attendance. Seating will be available to the first 125 to register. Individual Members, or Family Membership immediate family are invited at no charge. The spouse or partner of an individual member may attend for $10. All addi-tional guests will be charged $20.

The weekend of the 11th will begin with a Giants day game on Saturday and the X-Bay Regatta arriving in South Beach Harbor with a Chef John barbecue to celebrate the arrival of the fleet! Live music by “Fossil” will entertain us in the evening. Our Mothers Day brunch is nearly sold out, and promises to be another memorable “Susie Fay” hosted event with a sumptuous “Wellington of Beef & King Salmon” buffet, omelet station and a Flamenco guitarist to add to the ambiance. Two seatings! The Friday Night Series races continue on the 17th and the 31st

with the very popular “FNS” barbe-cue on the deck with “all you can eat” beef, pork ranch style beans and salad sides. We have been serving over 100 Friday racers with excellent response.

On Saturday the 18th, Commodore Paul Oliva is hosting a “South Pacific” themed, “Summer’s a Coming” late night cocktail party with music. Don’t miss this event as the host will be catching a plane “out of town” shortly thereafter. It promises to be a raucous party and a great send off for Paul. Deb Phairas is putting on a “Reislings & Rhones” wine pairing and sharing event on May 30th, heavy on the appetizers. RSVP’s are limited to 30 guests, so select a vino and make your reservations early. See you at the Club!

Have you seen the beautiful brass ship’s clock hanging above the bar? It is a gift to the club from MoMo’s,

our good neighbor across the street, as an expression of their gratitude for us hosting their staff holiday party earlier this year. They made the clock donation on top of the amazing $807 that their servers, bartenders and cooks stuffed into our Junior Sailing tip jars during the party! Big thank you to MoMo’s (and their lively sister establishments Pete’s, Pedro’s and Mission Rock). BEER TAPS After a few months of Anchor Steam on our main beer taps, we have reverted to our old favorite, Full Sail, for a while. Meanwhile on our “guest” tap, there’s been a new Blonde behind the bar – Drake’s Blonde from San Leandro. Plus we had a keg of draft Pacifico in our walk-in cooler for our Cinco de Mayo May 4th party.

OOD REMINDERS • Please be on full alert for non-members coming into the Club – particularly on Giants game days. We’ve had several occasions in the past few weeks when Giants fans came into the club - and, in some cases, even put on tags identifying themselves as BAADS members. Although Curtis and our Floor Captains will also be on the look-out for such ineligible ‘visitors’, the ultimate responsibility for not serving them is entirely on the OOD. Don’t hesitate to challenge anyone who doesn’t appear to be a qualified guest. If they’re wearing a tag that says BAADS, ask if they are a BAADS

member (there’s a list in the OOD manual for you to double check). If they are not a BAADS member, and if they are not a guest of a BAADS member who is in the club, you may not serve them. It’s about protecting our license!

• Floor Captains. Thanks to the great work of Lynda Maybruck, we have a whole new cadre of Floor Captains. As OODs, please make sure to introduce yourselves to a Floor Captain serving on your OOD shift – they are there to work with you to improve the overall SBYC experience for the benefit of our members and their guests. Our South Beach Yacht Club has the greatest group of volunteer bar-tenders – aka our Officers of the Day! We appreciate everything they do every single day we are open. Splice the mainbrace, y’all!

It is all about the people. People step up; we see it all the time, whether it has to do with major events, local and national emer-

gencies or just getting things done. SBYC is fortunate as we have much to do and we have considerable talent in our membership to do it. Martin Fay’s mantra as Commodore was “many hands make light work.” As our club’s size and complexity has grown that idea is as important, or more so, now as it was in 1997, and it is working. “How do we know it is working?” Looking back at the “on the water,” as it was described to me in December, a lot has been achieved. Our SBYC boats are spiffed up and operating well, we have additional skippers, we have additional race committee volunteers, we have

our “old hands” stepping up, we have new boats for Jr. Sailing, we have new cruise-outs and new volunteers there as well. An ambitious race schedule has been organized; cruise outs are going well, and Jr. Sailing is nearly sold out. How does this happen? It is all about the people! Whether you can do a little or can do a lot,

don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call me (925) 285-2897. Together we’ll find a place to add your hands to our “on the water” effort. Jr. Sailing The latest news is that the program is nearly sold out, but the really big news is that we have tak-en delivery of six new RS Teras for use in the program. These boats are specifically designed to get kids sail-ing, they are easy to rig, easy to sail, fun to sail and suited for the average nine-year-old 75lb. beginning sailor. If you’d like to get involved as a Jr. Sailing volunteer later this summer let me know. Big league kudos - to Dan Courter, one of our Anabel skippers, who took on and completed the task of paint-ing Anabel’s doghouse and flying bridge and followed up by doing her bright work. Drop by B dock and take a look, he did a great job!

RACING Friday Night Series got underway with a practice race on 4/19 and race

number one with plenty of wind 4/26. 40+ boats are registered and it appears another competitive and fun series is underway. XBAY Regatta – if you have not signed up you should do so now… this is year two of our competition with CYC, they won last year’s race (barely) and they have the trophy! We need to get it back! Plus we are hosting the winning BBQ!

Did you spot Emmanuel Uren in April’s Lattitude? He was just back from Malta where he was “on the committee boat, preparing to assist in running a match race in Marsamxett Harbour. Two guys go out into the Mediterranean in a Zodiac to set the marks and run the races, even when the seas are capping. I’ve never seen anything like it! I’ve been on GGYC and SBYC’s race committees for several years, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen fewer than five people go out. By the end of my week there, I’d joined the Royal Malta YC!” Hey Emmanuel et al - next trip take the SBYC WaveLength and start a new tradition!

and Celebration on Saturday, June 8th starting at 6 pm. The Club House will be filled with photo’s and videos from our glorious past—the good, the bad, and the wet. Party decorations are nautical blue & white with silver accents. We are organizing food stations which will tie back to our historical 25 year time period. In addition there will be a “local seafood” station reflecting our origins at the Jazz Cup, tasty outdoor food from our ballpark days, and an international table representing the America’s Cup! The X-Bay Challenge Regatta celebrates the appreciation of the Bay as well as friendly competition and camaraderie. This perpetual regatta seeks to celebrate the Bay’s intrinsic beauty, with its islands and bridges, and its challenge of wind and current. South Beach & Corinthian Yacht Clubs set a course that crosses the Bay to allow sailors to enjoy the different conditions unique to the Central & South Bay. We will begin in the Central Bay and finish at South Beach Yacht Club. Drop by to enjoy brunch, socialize, and view a variety of boats, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. We are currently seeking Brunch Boats in the harbor, including guest slips reserved. If you are willing to have members visit your boat please sign up by notifying Lorianna Kastrop at lorianna@kastropgroup.com or by calling 650-299-0303 during the day. If you want to participate, but have no idea what to serve, we can provide suggestions. Nothing fancy. Orange juice or coffee is fine. Donuts or fruit are good. Be creative. Want to make something more elaborate? If you want to be reimbursed for food/bev-erage expenses, let us know that too and we will work out the budget with you. (This would be quite appropriate if you are serving something more expensive, like a meat item, or an alcoholic beverage.) Boat owners near each other may wish to team up and prepare a dish

together. Members who are willing to help prepare or serve food or create beverages are encouraged! This is a members-only event (includes your “significant other” or your children, but please do not in-vite other guests). Club members will be charged a nominal fee to help off-set the costs of the event. No fee for our generous boat hosts. More details will be available once we know how many boats are participating.

Not only is it fun to move from boat to boat sharing yummy food and delicious beverages, but we all get an opportunity to mingle with each other and experience many of the boats in the SBYC fleet! BAADS welcomes three new board members Eli Frank, Stephen Pendas and Kathi Pugh who will all serve until December when a general election will be held. In addition BAADS members Fernanda Castelo and Lisa Gidley were appointed Co-Chairs of the America’s Cup Liaison Committee. The latest news of an Ameri-ca’s Cup team-up with BAADS is an informal sail planned for May 25. BAADS and AC sailors will crew dinghies on the model of the Awareness Regatta held in McCovey Cove two months ago. Seems some AC team members like a break from those high-tech 72’s. The ACEA has also invited BAADS to be part of a demonstration regatta pre-race show during the AC Series.

We frequently have “exceptional” volunteers at the Club. These are members who go over and above the call of duty to support and develop member related activities at SBYC for the membership to enjoy.

Volunteer of the Month, Our outstanding volunteer, Paul Janofsky, is so enthusiastic when asked to help out…and more importantly, even when we don’t ask anything of him. He sees something that needs to be done and he offers to help. Now that’s a great volunteer! A true power boater, Paul fell in love with Anabel a couple of years ago. He takes care of Anabel as if she were his own. Over the past two years Paul

as designed a training curriculum for fresh skip-pers for Anabel and has personally trained 10 new skippers to very high standards. He was adamant that more people know how to properly operate and care for Anabel. More recently Paul has learned about sailing and racing and is now active on race com-mittee…and he can keep an eye on his Anabel! No one at SBYC knows and understands Anabel better than Paul. A huge thank you to the one who is “all things Anabel”…Paul Janofsky.

RED BULL YOUTH TEAM HOME HOSTINGWe have 4 and we need 4 more hosts/host families to fully house the entire Emirates Team New Zealand Red Bull Youth team. These 21-25 year olds just need a bed, shower, and laundry facilities as they will be spending most of their time practicing and racing from August 8th thru Sept 5th. They’ll only be needing breakfast as their other meals will be likely be taken on the go. They will contribute financially towards any expenses like food, supplies, and transportation. It will be up to you how much you want to interact with your family. Please confirm your interest and commitment as soon as possible with Lisa Gidley. Meet our two newest members and now con-tributors to South Beach Yacht Club.

The first is Eric Jacobson. Eric has been boating and fishing in the Bay and Delta for over 40 years. He is the current owner of a Bayliner 39 named Y-Knot located here at South Beach on A dock. He is an avid fisherman and wants to join SBYC to socialize with other boaters and participate in SBYC events due to a recent change in his life. His sponsors have indicated that he is one of the most active boaters on A dock and have attended many events as a guest at SBYC. For the record, Eric is 6 foot 9 inches tall so you cannot miss him! I already named him captain of our “to be formed” volleyball team! Eric was sponsored by Barrie Wheeler, Peter Otten and Tom Rogers. Eric has expressed volunteer interest in our Fishing Der-by’s and Special events and he is a skilled electrical engineer. Our next member is Rob Theis. Rob is a racer of high caliber and has been waiting for a slip at South Beach for over 10 years. He is now a proud owner of a J-Boat 111 located on E-Dock. He has sailed all his life in J-boats, Catamarans and Beneteaus. Rob enjoys SBYC, the members and has many skills to offer the Club. He is a volunteer for the San Mateo Sheriff ’s Search and Rescue Team and is a Certified Marine Diver.

Rob advises for Marine Public Safe-ty programs and can give advice on Rules Governance. His first race for the Club will be the X-Bay Regatta later this month, and we have put great pressure on Rob to bring the Trophy home!

Rob was sponsored by Lisa Gidley, Colm Pelow, Milt Smith and Eugene Hu. Rob is interested in bring his Search, Rescue and Marine Safety Skills to SBYC as well as to Club Gov-ernance and Race Management. Please welcome Eric and Rob to our family here at South Beach Yacht Club - they have much to share! Meanwhile the Membership Com-mittee has been busy screening and interviewing, recommending rule changes, addressing memberships concerns, designing new cards, installing new applications, updating our database, getting out the new membership cards and now the final design of our new (optional) name tags to name just a few. Committee members Jean Ninos, Lynda Maybruck, Elizabeth Little, Denise Campbell-Lyle and Lynn Magnet have been doing a marvelous job! Thank you and “Tips Up”!

L I S A G I D L E YHow different this year is from 2012. Last year was spent testing what worked, or didn’t work as AC club events, extended club hours, and in working with the AC Event Authority and AC Race Management. All-in-all, we had a pretty successful year of AC club events: the ACEA made the Cup available to us, provided “CUP-dates” to keep us informed, had various speakers to educate us about all aspects of the America’s Cup, and the ACRM became part of the SBYC family by spending time just hanging out with us. We even headed down to San Diego to experience one of the first ACWS race weeks. This year brings a different perspective and a different focus. First of all, there isn’t as much ACWS activity this Spring as last and the attention is no longer on what the ACEA/ACRM is doing or planning. We’ve already expe-rienced last year’s rehearsal and expect only small changes in the program this year. What captures our interest now is the individual circumstances and competitive readiness of the AC teams themselves, the arrival of their AC72s at locations around the Bay, and the new program-ming for the venues of the Marina Village, the AC Pavilion at Piers 27-29, and the team bases at Piers 30-32. This year, it’s all about the AC Teams as they tune up for

the Louis Vuitton in July. Who is better prepared? Who presents the best challenge for the Cup? What technological surprises are still in store for us? We hope you’ll enjoy our “Tour of the Teams” events to find out some of the answers! We’ll either be visiting the team bases them-selves and/or hosting AC Team members – both defenders and challengers at various Club events. Also, we’ll be getting a peek at future AC team members as we also invite Red Bull Youth teams to the Club. We’ll be taking advan-tage of every ACEA hospitality/venue program within our reach and means. And finally, we’ll be participating in every Volunteer opportunity made available to us including on the water Course Marshal. We’ll even see some AC merchandise that has our own burgee on it. So, get ready to foil through the AC event season and get up close and personal with some of the most interesting AC Team personalities!

Loïck Peyron is one of the pillars of French sailing: the “Last of the Mohicans” as he likes to say not without humor. Loick’s career began at a young age, he started sailing in his hometown of La Baule bay, and when he reached 18, he entered his first Atlantic Ocean crossing race: the Mini-transatlantic race in 1979, alone on a 6.50 meter boat. More than forty Atlantic Ocean crossings later and with a phenom-enal prize list, Loïck maintains his passion for the sea, those who sail her and the ships, small and big. Whether he is beside an architect or behind the helm, this unmistak-able member of the most brilliant of French sailors is always thirsty for discoveries and challenges. Loïck is a passionate and curious person, meticulous, innovative and endowed with an exceptional talent recognized by his peers, he makes it a point of honor to look for the “best” which makes the “difference”. Loïck has a keen ability to have one foot in the traditional sailing past while simultaneously looking towards the future. From 2006 to 2009, Loïck was the Manager and Skipper of the Gitana Team, enjoying a historic perfor-mance in May 2008, winning for the third time the English Transatlantic race, this mythical transatlantic race between Plymouth and Boston; and this time at the helm of Gitana Team’s IMOCA 60 ‘Gitana Eighty’. In Febru-ary 2010 he was the Co-helmsman of the Alinghi catamaran to defend the

33rd America’s Cup against BMW Oracle. Loïck also raced, under the colors of the Sultanate of Oman in the 2009-2010 Extreme 40 catama-ran circuit as helmsman of Masirah Oman Sail, and also the D35 circuit in Switzerland at helmsman of Okalys-Corum. Loick won the Barcelona Race with Jean-Pierre Dick in Spring 2011 as co-helmsman on the Virbac-Paprec IMOCA Open 60.In 2011, after several months of intensive training and record-break-

ing runs (Record SNSM, Fastnet Race, Round the British Isles) on the maxi-catamaran Banque Populaire V, Loïck and his crew attacked the notorious Trophee Jules Verne record with incredible results, sailing around the world in an impressive 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes 53 seconds. All this while also helming the Energy Team AC45 for the America’s Cup World Series, leading them to victory in the AC World Series in Naples in 2012. Loïck focus now turns to victory of the Cup as helmsman for Sweden’s Artemis Racing. Often referred to as ‘Mr. Multi-hull’ and ‘The Jedi Master’, Loïck is considered the “Man” of the first races: Mini Transat, Route du Rhum (France-Antilles), Quebec St-Malo, Vendée Globe, Tour d’Europe, the “Race”, D35 circuit,the Trophee Clairfontaine, and many more...
