Du Ming Xin: Dance of the Waterweeds from Chinese Mermaid Suite
The water weeds are gentle and aesthetic the colorful clouds chasing the moon are sweet naughty and
unpredictable aren't they?
Wang Jian Zhang: Clouds Chasing the Moon
“Colorful clouds chasing the moon” indicates a picture of the night sky. We can see the color of the
night, which is not black but “colorful”. And there is the glorious moon, crystal clear, like water.
“Chasing” the word gives action to the picture, with some vividness in the twilight. Under the night sky
background, the clouds and the moon chase each other. What a beautiful scene of serenity!
Shostakovich: Concertino for Two Pianos, Op. 94
1953 was something of a watershed year for Dmitri Shostakovich, with the death of Stalin on March 5
and the composition of the great Tenth Symphony in the summer and fall. Stalin's death was more than
merely symbolic; Shostakovich was now relatively free of any impending charges of academic
"formalism" from Soviet authorities. The two-piano Concertino also dates from 1953 -- a ten-minute
work in one continuous movement written for the composer and his 15-year-old son Maxim to perform
together. The opening Adagio projects some of the brooding intensity characteristic of the Tenth
Symphony, along with dramatic contrasts (forceful dotted rhythms followed by meditative chorale
phrases) obviously patterned after the famous slow-movement format of Beethoven's Fourth Concerto.
The lighthearted themes of the Allegretto are juxtaposed and transformed in the skilled way of an
experienced master; the kaleidoscopic shifts of mood, color, and register propel the work to an effective
climax.
Lyrics
Will there really be a morning? Poem by Emily Dickinson
Will there really be a morning?
Is there such a thing as day?
Could I see it from the mountains
If I were as tall as they?
Has it feet like water lilies?
Has it feathers like a bird?
Is it brought from famous countries
Of which I have never heard?
Oh some scholar!
Oh some sailor!
Oh some wise man from the skies!
Please to tell a little pilgrim
Where that place called Morning,
Where that place called Morning lies!
Will there really be a morning?
Is there such a thing as day?
Epitaph for a Young Girl Based on an inscription in the Boston Common

Short was my work
I sweetly rest
God took me home
When he saw best.
I am not lost
I shall arise
When Christ my Lord
Descends the lower skies
Descends the skies.
Waterbird James Purdy
Waterbird, waterbird gently afloat
Know you my yearning for places remote?
Waterbird, waterbird under the sea
Keep you a kingdom for sleepers like me,
Keep you a kingdom for sleepers like me?
Waterbird, waterbird gently afloat
Know you my yearning for places remote?
Waterbird, waterbird under the sea
Keep you a kingdom for sleepers like me,
Keep you a kingdom for sleepers like me?
Waterbird, waterbird, gently afloat
You’ll Never Walk Alone from “Carousel” musical
When you walk through a storm hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

I’ve been walking all these years
on a land that’s not my own
I’ve been speaking all these years
with the music of my home
Here I found comfort
where we each must have a dream
Here I grew tired
where few are as they seem
Except my family
As she’s speaking all I hear
are the questions behind my eyes
Ask of love
learn of courage
work through the painful to find the wise
‘cause I have so much
I have so much left to do
How will I know it really happened without you
You are my family
But she says
[Chorus:]
I’m going home
I’m gonna rest my head in the land where love
was first known
And taken away
But here in my arms
You’ll always stay
Days get longer, night grows short
as I reach to see the signs
Every movie, every song finds a context within
my mind
Why do I seek the sadness of endings
before their time has come?
‘Cause then at the hour I will be tired
I will be numb
I want my family
[Chorus]
Her eyes are calm now
her voice is strong
I feel every bone in her hand
I have lived
you shall live
in this universe He has planned
But know that I’ll try
I will try to slow down the time
‘cause you’re my Tesoro, my cinciallegra
in your name is always mine
You are my family

Volare Literal Translation
Penso che un sogno cosi` non ritorni mai piu` I think that a dream like this will return nevermore
Mi dipingevo le mani e la faccia di blu I was painting my hands and face all in blue
Poi d’improvviso venivo dal vento rapito Then suddenly I was captured by the wind
E incominciavo a volare nel cielo infinito and began to fly up into the infinity of the sky
Volare, oh oh Oh to fly, oh oh
Cantare, oh oh oh Oh to sing, oh oh oh
Nel blu dipinto di blu In the blue painted in blue
Felice di stare lassu` Happy to stay way up high
E volavo, volavo felice piu` in alto del sole And I flew and I flew happily higher than the sun
Ed ancora piu` su` And even higher beyond
Mentre il mondo pian piano spariva lontano laggiu` While the world very slowly vanished far below
Una musica dolce suonava soltanto per me A sweet music way playing only for me
Volare, oh oh Oh to fly, oh oh
Cantare oh, oh oh Oh to sing, oh oh oh
Ma tutti I sogni nell’alba svaniscon perche’ But all dreams vanish with the dawn because
Quando tramonta la luna li porta con se’ When the moon sets it carries them with her
Ma io continuo a sognare negli occhi tuoi belli But I continue to dream in your beautiful eyes
Che sono blu come un cielo trapunto di stelle That are blue like the sky embroidered with stars
Volare, oh oh Oh to fly, oh oh
Cantare oh oh oh Oh to sing, oh oh oh
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu In the blue of the blue of your eyes
Felice di stare quaggiu` Happy to stay right down here
E continuo a volare felice piu` in alto del sole And I continue to happily fly higher than the sun
Ed ancora piu` su` And even higher up
Mentre il mondo pian piano scompare negli occhi tuoi blu
As the world very slowly vanishes in your eyes of
blue
La tua voce e` una musica dolce che suona per me Your voice is sweet music playing for me
Volare, oh oh… Oh to fly, oh oh
Cantare oh, oh Oh to sing, oh oh oh
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu In the blue of the blue of your eyes
Felice di stare quaggiu` Happy to stay right down here
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu In the blue of the blue of your eyes
Felice di stare quaggiu` Happy to stay right down here

What a Wonderful World
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of the people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They’re really saying I love you
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Molihua (茉莉花) Jasmine Flower
"Jasmine" is a famous Chinese folk song. There are several versions circulating in several regions of
China—in particular, the most widely sung in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Since Puccini used this
melody in his opera Turandot, it has become the best known Chinese folk song around the world. We
cherish the flower for its elegance, fragrance, a symbol of love.
